In a meeting not long ago, at the Chamber of Commerce in Carlsbad, I had the pleasure to hear Andria Taylor give a remarkable presentation. Her discourse, "Once Upon a Time... The Power of Storytelling for Your Business," was both delightful and insightful and I knew it needed a wider audience. And so, I convinced Andria to join me in the studio, to share her wisdom in a professional audio format. Her tale was originally released as an episode on our Imagine Podcasting podcast, complete with a transcript and chapter markers for your convenience. In January 2023 Wade Blair gave a presentation at the Carlsbad, CA Chamber of Commerce First Friday Breakfast and asked “Why do people set goals and never take the next steps to properly see them through?” Wade then introduced us all to “The Why Method”. Nikki Tobia was present that day. Months later at another First Friday Breakfast, I found myself facilitating at a networking table with Wade and Nikki Tobia from the “Free Wheelchair Mission.” Wade and Nikki started talking about Wade's previous presentation and they both became animated and passionate about the conversation they were having. I invited them both to come on this podcast to share that enthusiasm. This is a continuation of the conversations with Lisa Pachence, Audrey Holst, and Patty Block. Here are a few things that caught my attention I pulled out of the conversation today: Success is in a “we” and not in an “I.” Trauma-informed leadership. The difference between feedback and validation. Regarding feedback: Don't be nice. Be honest. Our messaging is never done. You never “get it.” It's never right on spot. Our message is meant to evolve. It evolves as we do as humans and business owners. Trust in the feedback can lead to collaboration. We were never taught how to receive feedback. What does collaboration mean? What does it look like? And what about collaborations between more than two people? Let's Get Social! https://www.theluckysoul.com/moneypilot < to find out about Karen's “Money Mindset Pilot Course” Feb. 21st, 2022. Visit more Women in Strong Leadership here https://www.whathasmyattention.com/category/wisl/. Welcome to What Has My Attention. This is John Biethan. Today I had the pleasure of bringing back Karen Berzanski to talk about a “Whole Body Approach to Money Mindset.” As usual with Karen, we had a lot of fun, and she gave me some things to think about and work on - which she will also do for you. If after listening to this episode and you want to bust through your money blocks, she has a money mindset pilot course coming up on Feb. 21st, 2022. So if you're lucky enough to hear this before that date and to find out more, run over to TheLuckySoul.com/moneypilot. And of course, the show notes have all the links to things mentioned in this episode today. And Karen, yes, struggly is a word: The state of being both hideously unattractive, and socially awkward. One who is struggly would have to seriously struggle to fit into a 'normal' social situation. Karen Berzanski is a Certified Life Coach and Pro EFT™ Tapping Coach who helps women bust through their money blocks so they can earn more, expect more, and enjoy more. Karen found Tapping after being hit and run over by a car in 2008. Not only did it help her heal PTSD and chronic physical pain, but it gave her the confidence to move across the country, start her own business and eliminate nearly $13k in debt – without deprivation. She's now committed to helping women and those in marginalized communities re-define their relationship with money, so they can overcome the patriarchal, generational and gender-based programming holding them back from making, being, and enjoying MORE. She is the founder of TheLuckySoul.com, rescue dog-mom to Banjo, and proud Angeleno. Visit WhatHasMyAttention.com Visit Misty LoveYourLifeWithMisty.com Welcome to What Has My Attention. This is John Biethan. In my conversation with Misty Giordano, after talking about Toyota 4Runners and SUVs, I asked Misty “What has your attention?” Her response? Uncertainty and loud noises. Highly sensitive people, which make up about 20% of our population. With a corporate background in HR, she saw that HR professionals were presenting to their employees' fluffy baseline programs and not a more robust well-being strategy wanted and needed by today's workforce. So she created “Love Your Life with Misty” as a consultant for those companies. She is the author of “The Self-Care Survival Guide for Employees.” Misty Giordano is the owner of Love Your Life, LLC, author of The Self-Care Survival Guide for Employees, and creatrix of The How to Human Experience offering speaking engagements, organizational wellbeing consulting and workshops, individual coaching and group programming centered around reconnecting to your human spirit via creating more room for joy and play. While she loves helping everyone, she especially loves being a mentor for women who feel lost in a life they created around what they felt was expected of them, but not what they actually wanted - leaving them feeling burnt out, stressed out, developing mysterious physical illnesses, their mental health suffering and leaving joy, play and fun as a foreign language. Instead of living life, they're managing it day in and day out. Sound like anyone you know? A former HR Manager, Misty has a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Arizona State University and her holistic health coaching certificate from The Institute for Integrative Nutrition, along with the completion of many holistic courses, workshops and intensives along the way. With a self-proclaimed Doctorate in Life, Misty gathers tools and resources that have helped her in years past to heal through life circumstances such as corporate burnout, autoimmune disease and remission, caregiving burnout, divorce and total life transformation to light a path forward for her clients and workshop participants. More than a coach, Misty illuminates an array of options and resources to guide her clients on their next steps in their own healing journey. A never-ending student of life herself, she is always learning, growing, and diving into the next breadcrumbs along her path. Misty proudly lives a digital nomadic lifestyle, and in her spare time, you can find her on any number of exploration adventures with her dog Mugsy in their home city of Chicago, checking out new landscapes, partaking in some kind of experiential travel experience, curled up with a good book or diving into an inspiration-led art project. Misty is also a board member for She's Rising, an organization that provides high school students with a broad perspective of the types of jobs available to them. I first had Shannon Dalton Giordano from Serendipity Social Media on episode 21titled “Your Tone of Voice.” This episode with her was recorded in August 2021 and is titled “Being Brave on Social Media” where Shannon gives humane tips on how to use social media to authentically interact and drive engagement on your social media channels. For this episode when I asked her what she'd like to talk about, she said, “Let's talk a bit about visibility hangovers. I am happy to share what I'm hearing most from clients - how to show up authentically, how to be brave, and how to not feel terrible if you don't receive good engagement (aka visibility hangover).” This is a refreshing approach that I really appreciate, and what makes Shannon a Women in Strong Leadership, and who can show you HOW to create a Social Media Strategy that works! I knew this wasn't the life I wanted. I loved the idea of building things for people. I always have. The engineer in me wanted to use products to make people's lives better. However, I found myself at companies like DoubleClick, Google, DialogTech. All focused on advertising and helping marketers, which wasn't quite hitting my desire to make the lives of people better. I found myself as the VP of Product Management and failing to get pregnant. I was more miserable and overwhelmed than I had ever been before, even when my health was at its worst in my 20s. I knew something had to change. I knew it was time to follow my heart and go after my dream of being a life and leadership coach. During one of the women groups at my company, the speaker we brought in kept mentioning her coach. I took it as a sign that I needed to make the step to get into coaching. And so, I started my journey to becoming a life and leadership coach and changing my life in the process. People now comment on how much more relaxed I am and happy I look. I've found things that I had lost over the years. A renewed connection to the universe and spirit. A renewed appreciation and love of my body. And so much more!” ~ Jamie Martin Contact Jamie Martin Life and Leadership Coach Jamie's website: https://jamiemartincoaching.com/ WHAT has YOUR attention? Dr. Gretchen Schmelzer, PhD has worked hard for twenty-five years to “change the conversation about trauma, growth, and development for individuals, groups and organizations.” As she says on her website, “Healing From Trauma is Possible - Healing is Brave - No One Heals Alone.” Shannon Giordano https://serendipitysocialmedia.com/ thank you for introducing us to each other! I consider this interview and conversation to be one of the most important episodes covered in the series I'm doing here, “Women in Strong Leadership.” Visit the episode notes for the link to Gretchen's website, and there you'll find articles, blogs and videos including the March 2020 interview on CNN's Anderson Cooper titled “How to cope with anxiety and stress linked to coronavirus pandemic.” This episode “could” be considered a bit of an update to that conversation. After listening to this episode, and when you find it useful because I'm sure you will, please share it with others you care about, family, friends, or co-workers. It's important. This episode is time-sensitive and is a PSA for Tomorrow's Women, a non-profit organization headquartered in Santa Fe, New Mexico that empowers young Israeli and Palestinian women to create change in areas of conflict. So if you like what you hear, on Saturday, July 31st, 2021 you'll have the opportunity to hear directly from the 2021 campers, speaking live from their unprecedented camp taking place in the Middle East near Bethlehem. And if you're so moved and want to support this work, please consider making a donation of any size at TomorrowsWomen.org. I'm joined today by the Director of Tomorrow's Women, Tarrie Burnett, and two campers from the 2021 camp who at the camp Saturday, July 31st will be joined by young leaders, sharing stories of peace amidst the recent violence. In this episode, Tarrie mentions my involvement in podcasting the 2006 monologues performed at the beautiful Lensic Theater in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I had recorded 6 episodes from that evening. Towards the end of this interview, and after our goodbyes at about the 32-minute mark, you'll have the opportunity to hear the monologues of several young women leaders from that 2006 camp. At the time I was working with Tanya Taylor Rubinstein and Camille Adair at Project Lifestories, an organization that was brought into the camps to help the girls write and perform their stories as monologues. I'd been podcasting for about a year and took the opportunity to record 6 episodes of the monologues. Saturday, July 31st @ 9 am PDT / 6 pm Jerusalem Time. This virtual event is free and open to the public. Please consider making a donation in support of our fundraising goal of $10,000 for the evening. Proceeds will go directly to the Young Leader program and additional training opportunities for these brave young women. Today Rebecca Le Vine will show you as an employee how to move out of “magical thinking” and into action and learn to love your Mondays. Rebecca and I met at Mary Cravets Watch Us Thrive networking calls which, if you're looking to spend time with quality people, I highly recommend you go to WatchUsThrive.com and sign up to receive notifications. Now most video versions of the podcasts are in the blog at WhatHasMyAttention.com. What needs to be different, better or more? To gain freedom, expression, and reward. Most of us need a plan. Ask yourself, what have I learned from my COVID experience? Ask: What did you learn? What do you want? What are you here to give? And how can you make that happen? This is the 2nd in a series of Women in Strong Leadership. Here we discuss several enhancements that lead with love and lead with love in coaching. It's interesting to me, and there's more on this topic to come, as the ground is fertile here. It has my attention and is important to me and others as the business landscape changes to a more humane business culture with women leading this in strong leadership and coaching often referenced by the work of Brene Brown and Simson Sinek, partners in this revolution. So if you’ve been with me recently, you know I’ve developed a curiosity and work ethic for writing. Well today, I get to have Chris Sheridan on the show. Chris is a writer. A storyteller, and an executive coach. So I was thrilled to have him on the show. If you’d like, come by WhatHasMyAttention.com and lay down a voice message on that little blue button on the bottom right of your screen. And of course, you can follow us anywhere you get your audio. A little about Chris in his own words I started when I was in college. I was in front of the camera and behind the microphone and then realized that where that power was, was actually behind the scenes in terms of the editorial judgment of what stories you're covering and how you're covering them. What angle you're approaching them with, etc. It was more interesting to me than getting my mug on camera. And so I opted to stay behind the scenes and I worked my way doing that. And then, and now, I now have pivoted to a portfolio career where I teach storytelling at Wake Forest University as part of a documentary film program. Today I have the pleasure of having Shannon Dalton Giordano from Serendipity Social Media, Inc. on the podcast. I met Shannon through Eileen Cox from True To Choice who I had met through Mary Cravets and her excellent Watch Us THRIVE online Zoom calls. “I'm a singer and love to sing just for fun, not professionally. So I think about Tone of Voice as how we show up. It's the words we use. It's the way we talk. It's the way we treat people. And I think that certainly from a brand perspective, often brands don't think about their tone of voice enough. I am talking about the written word. So it sounds funny since tone really makes it sound like it's going to be something audible, but yes, the words that you're using on social media, blog posts, advertising, and the ways that you talk to people. How do you want people to view you? Do you want them to see you as warm, inviting, and inclusive? Do you want to be fun? Do you want to be snarky? Do you want to be cutting edge? There are all sorts of ways you can impact your tone of voice so that people understand who you are and how you're trying to show up. It’s about storytelling. I start from, what's the thing that I'm trying to share. And then I try to think about what in my life is meaningful to me? And usually, it bubbles up to some story, whether it's about music or whether it's about a family member or training my dog or whatever it is. Do you use an anecdote to connect with people? I think it does two things. It really gets the point I'm trying to make across, but it also lets them have a little glimpse into my personality and who I am. Working with businesses, writing all of their social media posts, which I still do to some degree, but now, for the most part, I'm doing much more with strategy sessions, trying to help business owners and entrepreneurs figure out their strategy. I think a lot of people keep trying things on social media and not understanding why they don't work. I think it's much more effective to tell stories that are targeted to the pain points of the clients that you want to reach. So then they see themselves in your stories without you even having to say, buy this thing. Sometimes it can just be a really easy, a small switch. Everything you're posting is promotional. Maybe you think you're getting your message across, but it really doesn't make sense and people don't know what you do. So I've been spending a lot more time trying to get under the covers with business owners to figure out what they are doing now and how to put a strategy in place that works. It makes sense for them to read the analytics and insights and understand what's working, and what's not. I think sometimes we all just keep trying to do the same thing without desired results, the definition of insanity, doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different outcome.” ~ Shannon Dalton Giordano Contact Shannon Website: Serendipity Social Media, Inc. The journey of a writer that took him to podcasting. Since I recently started writing I’ve noticed a few things that may be apparent to you, but they certainly weren’t to me. As I’ve said before in previous episodes, writing with intention is a new experience for me. In the middle of the audio edit of this episode, it dawned on me how clearly Kent is as a communicator. I’ve been experiencing a similar “clarity” in my thinking since starting to write with intention. So this insight was the gem I received from the interview with Kent. Also, it’s such a pleasure to be on a remote podcast interview with a fellow podcaster who’s using a good microphone and is wearing headphones (hint hint). Enjoy the gems in this episode! When Kent Sanders from the Daily Writer started podcasting, over time, he sort of had triplets. Kents’ first podcast he created was called “The Artists Suitcase.” Kents’ second podcast was called “Born to Create” which several months later he renamed “Smart Business Writing” because he was getting into ghostwriting and wanted to know and share how to use content and writing to build a business. In November of 2020, he decided to “twist it” just a little bit and called it “The Daily Writer.” He now has the “Daily Writer” community and he’s working on a book with the same name. As Kent says, “Sometimes it takes you a few tries before you land on a concept that really sticks with you and sticks with your audience.” I totally agree from my own experience with a podcast I created in 2014, which is now called Alternative Health Tools. Three names later, it stuck. Kent thinks there’s about 20 to 30% of his writing community are podcasting. Interesting. Kent ends this episode with this advice to writers, “Somebody’s got to write it. Why not you?” Links mentioned in this episode The Podcast Answer Man Podcast! https://www.cliffravenscraft.com/ by Cliff Ravenscraft. What Has My Attention podcast https://www.whathasmyattention.com/17 You're probably wondering what sandtray has to do with podcasting. Simply put, it’s had my attention for a very long time. And since this podcast is about what has my attention, well there you go. But it was being on Kim Shea’s Pivot and Thrive Podcast episode 16 titled “John Biethan and Stephanie Murphy: An Extraordinary Couple Builds Their Future Together” where in the conversation my partner Stephanie talked about Sandtray. Kim gave me permission to use a portion of her episode to drop in here so you could know what Sandtray is and how as an Art Therapist, Stephanie uses it in her practice. Thank you Kim I appreciate it! And a note: There is a difference between Sandplay and Sandtray. “In Sandplay, the therapist does not intervene with the client once the tray is created. Instead, the therapist keeps the focus on the unconscious of the client. By contrast, the humanistic sandtray therapist is actively involved in facilitating an experience of awareness and growth.” ~ Sandtray Therapy institute https://bit.ly/3wfim4C. So Sandtray is a tool that allows a therapist to help their client tell a story. So if you really think about it, the best podcasts you hear are telling stories. That’s why the length of a podcast doesn’t matter. It’s the content and the storytelling that matters. For what follows about Sandtray, I've kept Kim's introduction to Stephanie and myself and then ask Stephanie the question of what is Sandtray. Lastly, I want to again thank Kim Shea and of course Stephanie. And there are three others I want to thank. Dave Herndon who taught me the value of first writing an outline before telling your story. He can be heard on episode 6 titled “Dave Herndon: How to Tell Your Story.” Peggy Lebo, our True Voice Method voice coach at ImaginePodcasting.com who guided me through her method which, has given me more confidence and brought out a voice to better express myself. And writing my solo episodes would have not been possible without the coaching from Kent Sanders at DailyWriterLife.com. I discovered Kents Daily Writer Podcast months ago and jumped into his Daily Writer Coaching program. So what’s Sandtray got to do with podcasting? Storytelling. If you’re doing solo episodes and want to clarify your thoughts, visit Kent’s links and his podcast. We have an upcoming episode with Kent in the upcoming weeks. And I’ve scheduled some time with Barry Berman on the topic of Leadership. Barry’s business is Integritas Consulting https://www.integritasconsult.com/ and we’ll be talking about “integrity.” Until next time, consider what has your attention and is valuable, and let go of the rest. Thanks for listening. You can always get a hold of me at What Has My Attention. You can even leave me a voice message there. There's a little blue button you can tap on to leave feedback or ask a question. If you want to find out more about why we're hired by people that keep putting off starting their podcast because it seems so complicated and expensive, and what they really want is to get their brand and message out there in a bigger way, head over to ImaginePodcasting.com and schedule a free call with me. What Has My Attention podcast https://www.whathasmyattention.com If this is your first time here, welcome. I’m John Biethan your host. This is being recorded on March 12, 2021, and I know things look very much like if we mind our P’s and Q’s we’ll be able to get back to some real unmasked socialization very soon. Probably the most valuable thing I’ve learned over the last many years of podcasting is that over time, podcasting builds long-lasting, trusted relationships that are absolutely worth their weight in gold personally and in business. And during the pandemic, there have been a lot of NEW podcasters who are on the path to discovering just that. But here’s what's got my attention lately and with a very big concerning question. What are the physiological effects and impact of the isolation most of us have experienced in the last year? Here are some things I’ve discovered with everything I’m quoting on here found in the links provided in the episode program notes. Where did “Social Distancing” Come From? The Guardian May 28, 2020, by Steven Poole 'Social distancing': how a 1950s phrase came to dominate 2020 If “social distancing” sounds to you more like snubbing or ghosting a friend, you are right. It was a 1957 collection of work by sociologist Karl Mannheim that first described it as a way to enforce power hierarchies. “The inhibition of free expression can also serve as a means of social distancing,” he wrote. “Thus, the higher ranks can constrain themselves to preserve a certain kind of deportment or dignity.” In doing so, they distance themselves socially from the plebs. From “Social” to “Physical” Futurism.com, The Byte March 20th, 2020 by Victor Tangermann The WHO wants you to ditch the phrase “social distancing” The World Health Organization is officially advocating against the phrase “social distancing” and is from here on // recommending the phrase “physical distancing” instead, according to Reuters. The idea is to clarify that an order to stay at home during the current coronavirus outbreak isn’t about breaking contact with your friends and family - but rather keeping a physical distance to make sure the disease doesn’t spread. Psychological Effects of “Social Distancing” PMC // US National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health August 16, 2020, by Kevin Sikali The dangers of social distancing: How COVID‐19 can reshape our social experience To society, social distancing presents the dangers of increasing social rejection, growing impersonality and individualism, and the loss of a sense of community. It negatively affects learning and growth, and it prevents people from effectively socializing, which is a fundamental human need. Austen Riggs Center / August 10, 2020 / By Katie Lewis, PhD Staying Away: The Psychological Impact of Social Distancing Right now, the physical health and well-being of the country depend on our adherence to the recent and ongoing implementation of social distancing (SD) in communities across the globe // to reduce the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). However, the current scale of SD is unprecedented and may lead to significant and lasting negative psychological effects. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and a recent review of studies about quarantine during infectious disease outbreaks[1], SD can lead to a higher prevalence of: Anxiety, Depression, Anger, Loneliness, Feelings of frustration, and Boredom. Sound familiar? I’ve experienced at least 4 of those conditions now and in this last year. Last March 2020 when all this started social distancing, I realized this: connection and relationship are the vaccines against isolation. So here’s what I’m doing. When I have someone that comes to mind and I’m curious about how they are doing, I pick up the phone and call them. I don’t text or email them. I call them. Maybe we’ll jump on a screen call. Maybe not. Until we get this virus under control, replace “social” with “physical” when you’re talking about it and pick up the phone. If you know anyone with credibility that you think you’d like to hear from about this, let me know, and I’ll see about bringing them on the show so we can talk about it. Go to WhatHasMyAttention.com and leave me a message. And if you want to chime in with an audio comment, you can just click on the little blue button at the bottom right of any page and leave me a comment or question, and it may be aired on the show. With podcasting, when you have a good “dynamic” microphone and learn how to use it, you’ll be up close and personal with the person you’re having a conversation with. You’ll experience the person more fully, which makes it easier to “empathize” and BE WITH the person you’re talking with, resulting in a more meaningful conversation. I started out the day by outlining a “solo” episode with the topic “Up Close and Personal,” the advantages of good microphone technique, with a good microphone. But then, while remotely on Squadcast helping Kim Shea, our co-producer and co-host for Alternative Health Tools podcast set up her “Cloudlifter,” I thought let’s record this as an episode! As you imagine the world of podcasting, we thought it would be useful to offer a brief overview of the landscape, as we see it. Very simply, podcasting, over time, creates long-lasting and trusted relationships…which are worth their weight in gold. Here are eight reasons why: Podcasting, as it relates to people People consume podcasts for longer periods of time vs. video or reading. Listening to podcasts is an easy and pleasurable experience because you can become immersed without the distraction of what’s going on in the millions of tabs on your browser or your phone constantly screaming at you visually. Advertising on podcasts is far less intrusive and distracting than it is on video. Listening to a podcast is an intimate experience – ears only. You can pick up nuances in tone, intonation, emotion in their voice. Podcasts make information personal. Listening to a podcast is a transportive experience. As listeners listen to a storyteller, they are transported to a particular moment in time and place in their mind as the story is being told. It’s the same as reading but without the eye strain. Podcasting, as it relates to businesses For businesses, once you have a podcast, it demonstrates to other businesses that you immediately have something to offer them – a stage and an audience. An opportunity for them to speak about themselves and demonstrate their service or product to a new group of people. For businesses, podcasts offer the experience of speaking on a convention stage to a crowded auditorium of people, without the travel, hotel, flights, venue, catering, etc. Podcasts will help you be a better communicator when talking about your business. It’s speaking in public without the public’s eyeballs on you. Much less stress, much better results. Takeaway Podcasting is more than fun – it’s an extension of you, your voice, and your brand. It’s an amazing way to reach new people. Podcasting is portable, personal, accessible, versatile, intimate, and adaptable. It is the way of the future. To conclude, podcasts have an undeserved reputation for being complicated and expensive. They are not. To be effective, they simply require that you do what so many others don’t: have a story worth telling, create imaginative program segments, and provide a quality listening experience.
