On this exclusive episode of the Black Baseball Mixtape podcast, Cheats is joined by the inaugural Manager of the Oakland Ballers, Micah Franklin, and three Black players who participated in the 2024 Ballers season: Austin Davis (52 games), Trevor Halsema (52 games), and Payton Harden (82 games). Coach Franklin and the players speak for the first time about their experience with the start-up Pioneer League team, created after the significant announcement that the A's were leaving Oakland after the 2024 season. The Ballers have a narrative of community-first. They have created interactive fan engagement and expensive marketing to highlight their innovation. The Ballers' opening-day roster was filled with players of color and a Black Manager in Franklin. However, as the season progressed, Franklin was dismissed despite a 29-25 record, and several Black players left the team for various reasons. Both Davis and Halsema asked to be either released or traded despite both batting over 300. There were housing concerns, safety concerns, and physical health concerns. There was a growing narrative that the Ballers' environment was challenging to minority players and their approach to the game. This podcast allows you to hear Coach Franklin's perspective and the perspective of the players who experienced the season. I hope this podcast educates and leads to overall improvement for those involved. The Black Baseball Mixtape partners with Steelo Sports, the Players Alliance, Numbers Game Scorecards, Herencia 21, and Rebellion Harvest.

Earlier this month, the goalkeeper of Spanish third-tier team, Rayo Majadahonda, went into the stands to confront a fan who allegedly racially abused him. Cheikh Sarr, a black man originally from Senegal, said he heard an elderly man join others as they made monkey gestures. But what took many people by surprise was the Spanish football federation's decision to slap the player with a two-match ban for the confrontation. It's not the first time European football has been rocked by a racism scandal. Last year, seven people were arrested for a similar incident against Real Madrid and Brazilian star Vinicius Junior. Samuel Eto'o, who is now the Cameroonian football federation's president said, he too faced discrimination when he was still playing for Barcelona in Spain. Nigeria's Samuel Chukwueze, Ghana's Iñaki Williams and Mouctar Diakhaby of Guinea, are among European-based African players who've also faced racism. So, what will it take to end racism in European football? The National Football League is the richest professional sports league in the world, but it has been accused of leaving its Black players behind. For years, the NFL fought claims from its own players that the sport could cause long-term brain damage, including a disease known as CTE. The league has since paid a settlement out to players, but it has also been accused of using race-based tests to deny Black players compensation. As the sport continues to gain larger audiences worldwide through mega-events like the Superbowl, what is the NFL doing to protect and care for its players? Full Hour | In today's second hour, Dom Giordano leads off the hour by announcing that today is Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, explaining why we need to do a better job of framing police in a positive light. Then, after touching upon the side topic again, asking who has a weak or strong handshake, Dom offers up a story in the realm of sports, reading back a column in Scientific American by a Duke Professor that argues that black players are disproportionately affected by NFL violence because they're forced into the most dangerous positions. Then, Dom welcomes in Kathy Barnette, former Senate candidate in Pennsylvania, back onto the Dom Giordano Program to gather her thoughts about what went down between Republicans and the Freedom Caucus as congressional members voted for their next Speaker of the House. Kathy explains how this reflected on the rest of the Republican Party, telling of the changing dynamics in what voters want and the turbulence that comes with that as a Party decides what's best for them moving forward. Then, Dom and Barnette move into the realm of schools and education, with Barnette revealing her next form of political activism as she hopes to assist candidates for school boards as progressives continue to force their political will onto unsuspecting students.
