The script for this year's MLS Cup serves up a gripping story, as founding clubs clash against each other in the final for the first time. On one side, the LA Galaxy, a former dynasty who fell on hard times, aim to regain their crown for an astonishing sixth time. On the other, the gutsy, gritty New York Red Bulls, who have been here since the beginning, try to make it to the mountaintop for the first time. In this episode, Taylor breaks down everything you need to know about the MLS Cup Final with fellow MLS Season Pass colleagues Diego Valeri and Sacha Kljestan. Plus, they check back in on how their preseason predictions held up. Offside With Taylor Twellman is a Major League Soccer podcast, produced by Apple TV and Rain Delay Media. (0:00-5:03) Greg Rakestraw is back for another edition of Soccer Saturday on 93.5 and 107.5 the Fan. Greg opens with January World Cup qualifiers starting in less than a week, as well as a new signing that features an Indy Eleven Academy player skipping college and signing his first professional contract. He then sets the agenda for a busy hour of soccer on Indy's weekly soccer show (8:04-18:21) Greg welcomes Indy Eleven defender Alex McQueen to the program to talk about his upcoming schedule with the Grenada National Team and how he's able to compete with that national team. McQueen touches on why it's the perfect time for him to make the jump from European soccer to the United States and his experiences playing in the fifth league of English soccer. How big of an adjustment is going from natural grass to turf? Greg asks Alex if there will be any adjustment in that category and what he's heard about the soccer and the city in Indianapolis. To finish the segment, Greg gives the back of Alex's player card so you can get to know the new Eleven defender. (21:23-31:23) Another new addition to the Eleven stops by, this time it is defender Mechack Jerome. Greg and Mechack touch on what he remembers about his trips to play in Indy as the opponent and his transition to the city of Indianapolis. The defender has spent the overwhelming majority of the last seven years with new Indy Eleven head coach Mark Lowry and he details what about the coach makes him want to follow him wherever he goes. Jerome is also being reunited with a familiar teammate in Indianapolis. To round out the conversation, Greg and Mechack touch on the Haitian National Team, what he's heard about Indianapolis and Coach Lowry. Once again, Greg gives you the back of Alex's card to give you more information about the center back. (34:26-45:52) It's news and notes time. Greg touches on a pair of US Men's National Team members that are linked to high profile moves on the other side of the pond, as well as the departure of one of the best to ever do it in MLS, Diego Valeri. After nine seasons in Portland, Valeri is headed back to Argentina to finish his professional career. Then, Rakestraw touches on the idea of playing a World Cup qualifier in Columbus and Minnesota during the coldest months of the year. (48:54-56:17) To round out another edition of Soccer Saturday, Greg takes a look around the English Premier League and puts a bow on a packed show.

MLS Cup is HERE and Susannah and Jillian are joined by a who's who of MLS characters. Gudmundur Thórarinsson serenades the ladies, Sebastian Blanco talks about his special connection with Diego Valeri, and our first pod pet?! Trust us, you won't want to miss this one!
You may know him as the Portland Timbers star forward and the 2017 MLS MVP, but Diego Valeri understands himself as a "disciple first, soccer player second." Listen to his reflections on faith, his transition to the United States, the place of American soccer on the world stage, and, most crucially, his commitment to radiate Christ through his profession.
(WARNING: The audio on this episode is very quiet, so you'll have to crank it) The Portland Timbers beat LAFC 2-1 at Providence Park on Wednesday and we're here to re-live the excitement! Reece and Charlie discuss everything about the game, including those little moments you may have missed. Charlie continues conducting the Jarek Niezgoda hype train. Reece yawns and dissects some defenses. We both sing the praises of Diego Valeri and Felipe Mora. We also talk Santiago Moreno to Portland, Bob Bradley whining about playing surfaces, and where LAFC ranks in terms of the Timbers' rivals. Join us!
LAFC faithful, there's no easy way to say it, but the loss in Portland was awful. A goal at the outset and a goal at the death served to feed LAFC to the woodchipper in Portland, and we recap all of it here on Episode 156. It was an inauspicious start for LAFC, surrendering a goal to Portland's superstar, Diego Valeri, just two minutes in. The 100thgoal in his brilliant career immediately energized the incredible Portland crowd. LAFC would respond 15 minutes later, as Carlos lit the candle in Portland to equalize 1-1. Despite a number of solid opportunities later in the match, we would enter the 3rd of 3 minutes of second half stoppage knotted at one. Superstar turned super sub, Sebastian Blanco, found Felipe Mora for a beautiful header at the death. Portland wins, 2-1. Also on this episode, it's Filly who stumps the Scarf, Andy Najar who scores a goal (just not for his team), and Ted Lasso is one day closer. Yes, we address the rumors of Chicho Arango, while also addressing the state of our midfield without Eduard Atuesta. Oh, and Brian Rodriguez played in a match for LAFC for the first time in well over a year. There's no time to lick our wounds, however, as the boys head back to the Banc to take on Vancouver in just a few days. We will be there, our buddy Vince of 110 Football will be there, Al Raitt will be there, and so should you! Until then, enjoy Episode 156 of Defenders of the Banc.

As the Portland Timbers' preseason, presented by Old Trapper continues, team analyst Ross Smith continues his check-ins with the team. On this edition, Smith talks to the team's captain, El Maestro Diego Valeri, about his unique offseason and the milestones that are to come in his career - catching in a type of improvised stereo as he finishes his afternoon routine.
Diego Valeri's place among MLS's 25 Greatest players of all-time speaks to his impact on and off the field. The day before his place was announced, a former teammate, Nat Borchers, joined a fellow analyst and former Timber, Ross Smith, to talk about Valeri's impact in the Rose City and his place in Major League Soccer history.
It’s the final match of the season, and potentially, the final match at Banc of California Stadium in 2020. A familiar foe awaits, as for the fourth time this year, LAFC takes on Portland. On Episode 129, Filly and the Scarf break down all the good and the bad from our tussle with the Timbers! Things got off to a beautiful start, as just 5 minutes in, Carlos Vela, back in the starting lineup, slots one home off a rebound to put the home squad up 1-0. The connections between Diego Rossi, Carlos Vela, and the 16-year old Christian Torres came early and often for the Black and Gold, and it was fun to watch. Rossi found the post and Vela found the crossbar as LAFC head into the half up just one goal. It would be more of the same early in the second, as Rossi found the post again. It was a back and forth affair in the second, with LAFC creating fewer chances and Portland finding more comfort, especially off the foot of Diego Valeri. Kenneth Vermeer came up huge several times but was equaled by his counterpart between the pipes, Steve Clark. Just before stoppage, Portland found the equalizer, as Southern California native Jorge Villafana got on the end of a Diego Valeri pass to make it 1-1. It was a somewhat frustrating, if not oddly poetic, end to LAFC’s regular season. LAFC sit 7th in the table, which means a date with the Sounders in Seattle to kick off the playoffs. Revenge is a dish best served Black and Gold! It’ll be about a 2-week break for Bob and the boys, which should be plenty of time to get ready for Seattle. Diego Rossi ends the season as the youngest Golden Boot winner in league history, and he and Vela become the first teammates to win the boot back-to-back. LAFC also finishes the season as the Best in the West and the Best in MLS at scoring goals, pacing the circuit with 47. Rounding out the episode, we fondly remember Alex Trebek while saying goodbye to the Supporters Shield. This Day in LAFC History celebrates the birth of the first signing in club history while highlighting a goal for Brian (just not one for LAFC). Filly nurses a hangover, Scarf congratulates another expansion team on their playoff berth, and the boys can’t help but feel sorry for Philadelphia as they raise a plastic shield. The Most LAFC Podcast on Earth! Who is Defenders of the Banc? (RIP Alex Trebek)
Welcome back to another episode of the Third Sub Podcast! In their 48th episode, Alex and Sam are back, as usual, this time to chat about the upcoming Vancouver Whitecaps clash with the Portland Timbers. First, they look at what to expect from the Timbers, who have been a streaky team as of late, rising to 2nd in the Western Conference thanks to a nice run of form that's seen them win their last 2 games. From the threat of Yimmy Chara on the wing, to the emergence of Jeremy Ebobisse, as well as the 'Double Diego' threat of Diego Valeri and Diego Chara in midfield, Alex and Sam look at who the 'Caps need to be wary of on the offensive side of things, especially after a heavy loss to LAFC's talented cast of attackers in the midweek. After that, they look at Portland's weakness, which appears to be their defence, which has only been masked by some excellent goalkeeping from Steve Clark, who continues to be one of the best goalkeepers in all of Major League Soccer this season with his play behind a porous Timbers defensive line. Once done with the Timbers chatter, the talk then shifts to the Whitecaps, as they look at what the 'Caps need to work on ahead of this one, as well as how playing at 'home' in Portland will affect them. They also try and take a stab at predicting both the Whitecaps lineup and the matches final score, with the predictions understandably a bit sour after getting them so horribly wrong ahead of the LAFC game. Well, we have to talk about it. Jason, Adam, and Ben spend 90 minutes on all things US men's national team, starting with the awful game in Trinidad. We discuss the mistake of using the exact same lineup, the nonchalance of the team and the arrogance of Bruce Arena, and Bruce's lineup and overall roster selections. After the break, we stay with the USMNT and discuss the players who won't be around, either in the near future or for the next world cup, and discuss the age gap that has everyone talking. We dismiss the notion that it is ever good to miss a World Cup, but talk about the reforms that we want to see in the wake of this disaster, including what to do with the $100M US Soccer has in the bank and other ways to advance soccer. In the final segment, we do actually talk briefly about D.C. United and their upcoming game against the Portland Timbers. We talk about how they will have to rotate with players coming off of international duty and how sensational Diego Valeri has been. Give it a listen!

The US Open Cup final is set. The Chicago Fire may have been desperate to host the big match, but their performance wasn’t up to snuff (and those road woes struck again) as the New England Revolution made sure they’d play for silverware in 2016. The Revs will face FC Dallas, who used an epic, corner-kick fueled comeback against the LA Galaxy to book their place in the final, a game they’ll host. Oscar Pareja joins the guys to break down the win, explain what happened with Fabian Castillo and give an academy update ahead of another big weekend match against Sporting KC. In the second segment, the guys wonder what Diego Valeri’s place in Timbers lore will be after the Argentine No. 10 signed a contract extension and professed his desire to stay in Portland when his career is through. Plus, rumors galore around the Red Bulls and Montreal, Alejandro Bedoya’s potential debut and a reason to watch Seattle the rest of the way. Entertainment value! The mailbag starts with some USMNT updates from overseas before transitioning into a question about the ETR crew and recreational soccer. If that doesn’t grab your attention, we’ve got more origin stories to reflect on.
The Filibuster team is united once again, and Jason, Adam, and Ben are here to talk about D.C. United's 2-2 draw with the Philadelphia Union. We talk about whether or not this is the turning point of the season, and have to keep talking about how the finishing needs to improve and how United is shot shy. We talk about how the game changed with the subs of Julian Buescher, Lamar Neagle, and Kennedy Igboananike, which also was around the same time Ben Olsen got sent off. Finally, we talk about Rob Vincent as a defensive midfielder and what we want to see against Portland. To help us preview the game against Portland Timbers, we bring on FourFourTwo USA's Richard Farley. We ask him about Portland's win over Sporting Kansas City and Porterball versus Bennyball. We have to talk about how Portland is yet to win a road game this year, and how they will try and win their first without Diego Chara. We talk about their new defenders, including Vytas, as well as the new forward line pairing of Jack McInerney and Fanendo Adi. Diego Valeri has been playing wide recently, so we have to dig into that, as well as who replaces Alvas Powell and the question of Adam Kwarasey versus Jake Gleeson. We then move into a bigger discussion of D.C. United and the whole Eastern Conference versus the Western Conference, before coming back around to ask how Portland would gameplan D.C. United. Give it a listen!
Who says this is the slowest sports week of the year? Certainly not MLS fans who saw a bonkers Wednesday night of eye-catching results keep the week rolling. It was headlined by first-place FC Dallas suffering a 5-0 whooping in Seattle that included a lineup gambit from Oscar Pareja, another Jordan Morris goal and a Clint Dempsey red card that will see him suspended for Sunday’s match against the rival Timbers. Oh, and Nacho Piatti scored (when he shouldn’t have been on the field), Connor Lade put up a golazo for his first MLS strike and the Fire’s Dutch import opened his account under two rainbows against a frustrated Sporting KC. The past is over, but the future is yet to come. This weekend promises to be another banger, as MLS takes over Sunday with #PORvSEA (3 pm ET, FOX), #MTLvNYC (5 pm ET, ESPN) and #PHIvNY (7 pm ET, FS1). After attempting to pronounce the name of Portland’s new Lithuanian signing, the guys are joined by Timbers goalkeeper Jake Gleeson to reminisce about live in New Zealand and the brilliance of Diego Valeri. Then they break down Mix Diskerud’s place on NYCFC, the most-likeable player in MLS and the rest of the weekend action and transfer window speculation. In the mailbag, Andrew learns about Pokemon Go, Antonio Nocerino disappoints the Orlando faithful and Liga MX makes a rule that could affect Mexican-Americans.
MLS Cup Preview Edition: We talk to Portland Timbers midfielder Diego Valeri about his playoff beard, trash talking with Federico Higuain, craft beer drinker and MLS Cup. In the second segment, CSN-Washington anchor and reporter Sebastian Salazar joins us to breakdown MLS Cup. Don't miss this one!
Three games remain in the 2015 MLS season, and the guys gather to break down how we got to this point after Sunday’s Conference Championship first legs. Up first, the Western Conference, where the Timbers put on a show without Diego Valeri and ran out 3-1 winners at home. Fox Sports pundit Alexi Lalas was at Providence Park and says Dallas still has plenty of room to muscle in on an MLS Cup experience. Out East, Justin Meram threw a sucker punch heard from Columbus to New York then Kei Kamara did what he does best to make it 2-0 and give the Red Bulls a mountain to climb at home. What happened on the defensive breakdowns? Did Crew SC out Red Bull the Red Bulls? What’s the tactical landscape look like for the second leg? In the mailbag, a Mexican legend is linked with the open Chicago Fire coaching job. David and Matt say it would be a good hire. What do you think? We have Fire swag for the best emails and tweets!
Another day, another Filibuster for your listening pleasure. Jason, Adam, and Ben are back to talk about D.C. United versus the New England Revolution and we start be spending too much time on how obvious the red cards were. We then move onto what bothered us most about that game, the (lone?) standout play of Facundo Coria, our annoyance at the goal celebration, and Ben Olsen's subs and the positional battles they foretell. We then talk about tonight's game against the Portland Timbers. We talk about Portland missing Diego Valeri, and how the Timbers will play in this game. Finally, we move onto the weekend game against the Philadelphia Union. We have a meetup before that game that you should come to! We ask how United can avoid another disappointment against the Union, while also discussing some NEW silliness with their goalkeeping situation. Give it a listen!

MLS MVP candidate Diego Valeri on learning English, translating trash talk, living in Portland and where he keeps all his timber slices from Timber Joey.
Grant has a wide-ranging conversation with Portland Timbers coach Giovanni Savarese in which they talk about Diego Valeri's potential return to the team for 2020, what happened with departed DP Brian Fernández, how Savarese works with GM Gavin Wilkinson and owner Merritt Paulson, what has (and hasn't changed) in MLS since he played in the league's first season for the MetroStars, how winning three NASL titles with the New York Cosmos has shaped him as a coach, his thoughts on the current state of his Venezuelan national team and how his family in Venezuela has dealt with the turmoil in that country.
