32. New Skin I woke up one day and decided to change my skin.* I'm sure that sounded crazy so I'll say it all again. I woke up… one day and decided to change my skin. Not as much my idea, as that it grew out from within. It seems new skin was required because the old had become tired. A frame of reference turned brittle inside a paradigm too little. Or picture this idea I am spitting as an analogy like… knitting. But the fabrics random where we're sitting and the patches we are sewing are all ill-fitting. Or how we eat and drink too hearty when we're with friends or at a party. Because a vice grows from a crutch when we reach for it too much. Ok… apologies for my ramble. Thanks for dealing with that preamble, While I get back to the bottom line We need new skin to hold new wine. Fresh capacity designed to hold a consciousness Divine. I noticed a new consciousness… Let's call that new wine. When I released the incessant fears of an uncontrolled future space and time. So old skin - I'll summarize as the egoic-mind. And if I tried to contain this New along with the egoic burdens I usually hold onto. Then projected shadows I would spew, and all my ends would come unglued. So, I resolved to “just let go… I woke up one day… and decided to kill my ego”.** To shed my old skin! Now that's some ice that's thin! To “just let go”. As an exchange. Of all I “could not hold onto. And exchange it all, for a hope… That lies beyond the blue”.*** But as a child of this big-blue That's a hard thing to do. How do we shed the egoic-mind? Within this myth called space and time? I can't lie. It is a constant struggle to shift my awareness from habitually imagined trouble. But at the same time this new wine has been so freeing. To finally live out “In Christ we live and move and have our Being”.**** *Jesus of Nazareth, Mark 2:21-22 **Sturgill Simpson, “Just Let Go”. On this episode of "Ear Buds", we talk about Lucas's connection to Sturgill Simpson, country music from our childhood, how Sturgill is the most punk rock and progressive country artist out there right now, Willie Nelson's reggae album, Brett tries to get groceries delivered during the episode and Lucas couldn't figure out how to edit that out aaaaaaaand eventually we get to all our thoughts on the heady, heartfelt, fresh and game-changing album "Metamodern Sounds of Country Music" by Sturgill Simpson.
Kids are just getting after it with activities and loving it. I think Lou Reed's song Beginning of a Great Adventure is pretty much spot on. I mean, they make my life a series of neverending tasks. Yeah, I might be taking away something different from that song. The message to me is that rearing children is the beginning of a great adventure...well, if you care at all that is. Regardless, they're the best thing I've been involved in and I love my time with them. I did snag a few new records this past holiday weekend. Combat Rock by The Clash might be a sore subject for punk rock fans from the 70s and 80s, but I love it. My uncle had the cassette when I was young and it was played quite a lot. It's a winner in my book. Sturgill Simpson's Metamodern Sounds in Country Music is a winner as well. I love this album. You can see these two along with some other miscellaneous pics in the photo album here. Yeah, I'm partaking in alcoholic beverages on a leaner basis than I had been before. I've got this. Couldn't pass up Ranch Water (my new Summer drink), Teremana Añejo, and a mezcal shot with my homeboy Mikey though, could I? Loving Obi-Wan Kenobi on Disney+. I understand the gripes, but wah wah and boo-hoo. It's a fricking Star Wars show ya babies. Stranger Things Season 4 is pretty amazing as well. Can't wait to finish Part 1. Got a new novel to read, but haven't really started. I'm jazzed about it though. The Peacekeeper has a really interesting setting. I will let you know more as I read on. Same old podcasts. Nothing new to see here. Move along. I do have a few parting words as well. They're about something that has been on all our minds recently. Sturgill Simpson blurs the lines between country and psychedelic on his 2014 album, Metamodern Sounds in Country Music. While paying its dues to the country tradition, it breaks the mold to make a significant contribution to both genres. As if that weren't enough, Sturgill is a clever lyricist who doesn't shy away from confronting the hard questions. We talk through the thought-provoking lyrics, as well as the innovative writing and instrumentation.Album links:SpotifyApple MusicFind us on Twitter @bsidechicks or on bsidechicks.com

He has that great song "Turtles All the Way Down", all about psilocybin, DMT, and reptile aliens from "Metamodern Sounds in Country Music". Then he released an great cover of Nirvana's "In Bloom", from "A Sailor's Guide to Earth". These are not bro-country moves. I watched it. Now, I was fresh off of Fantastic Fest, so I was used to seeing some great visuals. Then the night before I had seen Roger Waters new "Us + Them" convert film. If anybody ever wondered what Pink Floyd would look like in 2020, this is it! A bit on the political side, but that is Roger Waters. But more great visuals, of course! It's Friday night, I catch Guns 'N Roses on their Not In This Lifetime Tour, with a reunion lineup for the last several years, the 17th annual Austin City Limits (ACL) music festival held in Zilker Park which is held on two consecutive three-day weekends. Sympathy for the devil that we speak of... Simpson was chosen as the opening act for several shows during GnR's "Not in this Lifetime" tour in the summer of 2017. But I get home and watch "Sound & Fury" and was completely blown away! Not what you would typically expect from a country artist. It is like a Pink Floyd movie, but with a Samurai. This was something extraordinary! Here is Make Art Not Friends, my favorite song on the album. I read some reviews about the album, many of them are not favorable. Many of them point to the comparisons with ZZ Top's "Eliminator" album. Sure. But this song here, it's like The Cars , Ric Ocasek recently deceased. It's like a marriage of "Just what I Needed" and let the "Good Times Roll". And if you do like this, check out Shooter Jenning's Hierophant "Black Ribbons" album from 2009. A dystopian rock opera concept companion to "Sound & Fury". It too surfs the radio dial and genre. This has now quickly and easily become my favorite album of the year. "The most important country record since Red Headed Stranger." - Matt Comer And just announced today, an arena tour for Sturgill Simpson! He's coming to the Erwin Center on March 28, 2020. Along with fellow Kentucky singer/songwriter Tyler Childers, whom Sturgill produced his last 2 albums. Tyler is great, too! I caught him this Summer at Robert Earl Keen's 4th on the River in Kerrville. He really brings out the rowdy crowd! And I, along with my friends, may have somehow been mistaken for him and his band afterwards at a hotel pool... Are you sure Hank done it this way? I don't know, but Hank lead his own way. And so did Waylon and so many others. The ones that we still talk about to this day. And Sturgill he is on his own path, too. And him doing an arena rock show, WOW! I mean seriously, I've seen the setlist... --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tiny-curations-deep-dives/message

Cobb first heard Chris Stapleton’s classic country delivery through the tinny speaker of an iPhone and was so taken he swore he’d someday work with the Kentucky-born singer. Eight years later they celebrated an all-genre Album of the Year nomination for “Traveller” at the 58th annual Grammy Awards. He also heard something special in Jason Isbell, Anderson East, and Brandi Carlisle. His work with all those distinct, genre-bending voices has earned him widespread critical acclaim and an additional nomination for Producer of the Year. Cobb has made some of the most respected and critically acclaimed albums to come out of Music City in recent years. He made Sturgill Simpson a reluctant star with “Metamodern Sounds in Country Music”. And Jason Isbell No. 1 in three genres with rock, country and folk chart-topper “Something More Than Free”. This year his work on Brandi Carlisle's recent album cleaned up at the Grammies. I had the pleasure of speaking with Dave Cobb at the historic RCA Studio A in Nashville, which was built by Chet Atkins himself during the golden age of country music in Nashville. Dave has recently taken over the stewardship of that room and has created a string of incredible records while remaining humble and somewhat in awe of his surroundings. It was a pleasure to spend some time with him - enjoy my conversation with Dave Cobb, and please subscribe to the podcast for free on iTunes!
Metamodern Sounds is a beautiful, psychedelic, outlaw country acid trip that explores why we're here and what it all means. Despite being all but blacklisted from the country music industry, Sturgill continues to create some of the best modern country today. I'm joined in this episode by ESPN senior writer Kevin Van Valkenburg, who has some of the best insights I've ever heard on Sturgill and his music. A must-listen both for Sturgill fans, and for those who aren't yet.

The temp on the porch may be arctic but Episode 5 is a little Sip of Sunshine. In the midst of a rare Bomb Cyclone, we head back to 1967 on Side A to chat about Simon & Garfunkel’s Hazy Shade of Winter which the Bangles covered for the soundtrack to the iconic 80s film - Less Than Zero. Filler waxes poetically about one of his favorite authors, Bret Easton Ellis, while I just try to keep up with him & stick with the program. On Side B, we take you from Rome to Nashville for some Sturgill Simpson lovin’. We discuss his 2nd & 3rd albums which both feature genius covers. In my opinion, Sturgill’s 2014 album, Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, contains one of the greatest covers of all time with his rendition of When In Rome's The Promise. Holy Smokes. We hope you enjoy it! Support the show (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/cover-story/id1316021270)
In anticipation of reviewing Sturgill Simpson’s album “Metamodern Sounds In Country Music” I decided to take a bunch of acid and mushrooms and remind myself of how Psychedelic Thought and Eastern Philosophy had such incredible commonalities… I wanted to run down those squiggly avenues where there was a convergence of my ideas of reality and my ideas of what I wanted reality to be. Or that’s what 19 year old Shane and only 19 year old Shane would have done… Get "Metamodern Sounds In Country Music" on Amazon ### Coming Up ### Next week we revisit 80’s hip-hop…Ryan picked RUN DMC… Can’t wait to talk about this one…
Kevin is back after his paternity leave and as he was picking the album for this week’s episode, he decided to throw us a softball. Oh wait, actually he decided to alter the format of the show: this week he picked our first comedy album. This week’s show features Demetri Martin’s 2012 record “Standup Comedian”. I’m not gonna say it wasn’t fun figuring out how to talk about a comedy record, or that we won’t do another record in the future, but it sure was an interesting choice. I just want to thank Mark Couvillion again for letting us record in his garage the last couple of months, and doing quite an able job filling in for Kevin. Mark will be around in the future so this isn’t a goodbye or anything. Purchase "Standup Comedian" on Amazon ### A Few Minutes With ### Ok. OH! Also, for this week’s A Few Minutes With, in keeping with the comedy theme, I decided we should listen to [“My Name is Hannibal”](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8wJ05EqS9U) which is a bit by Hannibal Buress. Coming Up OK! That’s it for now. Next time we will be taking on “Metamodern Sounds in Country Music”. We haven’t done enough country, so why not listen to a dude that sings about LSD and covers the When In Rome hit “The Promise” (which we’ve talked about on this show, bringing it all full circle). Next week then?
