We have featured The Cardigans before and their brilliant cover of Black Sabbath's “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.” This time, the Cardigans are covering Kraftwerk – a German band known for being the innovators and pioneers of electronic music. Our Side B takes us down South to New Orleans and Alabama as we discuss Fats Domino's easy going, boogie-woogie version of Hank William's Jambalaya. We hope you enjoy! On Side A we talk about one of Amanda's favorite new artists, the Canadian singer/songwriter, Charlotte Cornfield, and her cover of Lucinda William's “Fruits of My Labor.”  Amanda was first drawn to Cornfield when she heard the song, “Pac-Man” which has quickly become a staple on her playlists . Our Side B features a conversation with Matt about Joy Division who were pioneers of the post-punk movement and LCD Soundsystem's cover of “No Love Lost.” Here at Cover Story, we are huge LCD Soundsystem fans & can't wait to banter with The Boner about this band. On Side A we talk about Nada Surf's cover of the seminal classic by The Pixies, "Where is my mind?".  And, as promised on our last episode, we are going to take Filler out of his comfort zone as we bust out the tie dye and strap on our Birkenstocks to talk about one of my favorite covers of all time: Grateful Dead's version of Broken Arrow. Our Side A takes us on a circuitous route to Nigeria as co-host Matt Filler connects the dots from David Byrne to Hot Chip and helps answer the question, “Who was William Onyeabor and why is his song, 'Atomic Bomb', so good?” And, since this is our first episode after a two year Covid induced hiatus, we also enjoy a brief return to Muff's Corner…Won't you join us?  Support the show

On Side A, we have the pleasure of heading into the pipeline as we discover the legendary King of the Surf Guitar, Dick Dale. He pioneered the surf music style and with the "breakneck speed of his single-note staccato picking technique" and showmanship with the guitar is considered a precursor to heavy metal music, influencing guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen. The Boston-born guitar icon released "Misirlou" – a Mediterranean folk tune in 1962 and it was a track he claimed to have recorded 95 times in an effort to reduce the oceans of reverb that ultimately defined surf rock. Filler will take us down his pipeline dream as we chat about the original recording of Misirlou which dates as far back as 1927! And as we make our way over to Side B, it becomes quite clear that Filler & I are gonna need a bigger boat…we have some special late night visitors to our porch. Our long time pal, Vignone, stops by to school us on A Tribe Called Quest. Vignone grew up around the block from Filler and me and was no stranger to late nights on the porch and early mornings recovering in the ocean. On Side A we talk about one of the greatest unrequited love songs of all time, Romeo & Juliet by Dire Straits. The song has been covered by numerous artists such as The Indigo Girls & The Killers, to name a few. Contrary to popular belief, the song has little to do with the Capulets & Montagues and more to do with a fling between two rock n roll cats. And when you’re ready to flip on over to Side: It seems that all roads lead to Jack White. And the road we took to get to Elvis Costello’s cover of “I Just Don’t Know What to do With Myself” not only lead us to Jack White but also to Dusty Springfield and Burt Bacharach. On Side A: We find some common threads that led to the rise in fame and success of Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Ike & Tina Revue. Each group had breakout hits by performing cover songs. That’s right, folks. Cover Songs. Susie Q was a song written by Dale Hawkins in 1957. In 1968, Creedence decided to cover the song for their debut album. The song went on to be one of their biggest hits and earned them plenty of air time on the radio. Similarly, when Ike & Tina first entered the scene, they made quite a splash with their barnstorming cover of Creedence’s “Proud Mary.” There’s a great deal of debate about which version is the better version and we look forward to having you join us for our banter. On Side B of our episode we dive into R&B geniuses, The Isley Brother’s, and their excellent 1973 cover of the song, “Summer Breeze.” The song was originally recorded in 1972 by Seals & Croft and covered by several artists including the pristine and tight sounds of The Main Ingredient for their 1974 album, Euphrates River. Episode 7 takes us back down South in the early 1970s then on over to England in the 1980s. On Side A, we have fun discovering the original Little Feat song, "Willin." Willin’ is a song written by the guitarist & singer, Lowell George, in 1970 and was a mainstay of the band Little Feat. The song is about a truck driver in the American southwest who makes some extra cash smuggling cigarettes and transporting Mexicans illegally across the border. In the liner notes of the 1993 album, As Time Goes By: The Very Best of Little Feat, music journalist, John Tobler wrote that Willin’ "quickly became a favorite among America’s truckdrivers, many of whom continue to regard it as the anthem of their profession . . .” Willin' has been covered by so many amazing artists but our Cover Story Rabbit Hole led us to Tom Petty's 2013 live version which we just adore. On Side B, we head on over to the eighties in Manchester, England. A gifted guitarist and composer at the young age of 18, Johnny Marr decided to form a band and recruited a local poet and singer, Morrissey to join him. The rest is history, folks. The Smiths were formed in 1982 and went on to make four classic albums including dozens of singles. "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I want" is one of The Smiths more popular songs and has been covered a bunch. We highlight The Dream Academy's 1984 cover which was featured in the John Hughes film, "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." We hope you enjoy!
