Well, it certainly didn't take long for President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance to revive the Ugly American brand.Welcome to Season 3: Episode 5 of A View from the Left Side, New Strategies for a New World Order. As the seventh week of Trump's second term comes to a close, the United States, the world and the global financial markets are reeling from his decisions and walkbacks. Trump is not just a flimflam man. He's a flipflopping flimflam man. It's mind-boggling how much has happened since I recorded my last podcast a week ago. Casting off our long-term allies, jumping in bed with Russia, starting a trade war with our biggest trading partners, crashing Wall Street, tanking world financial markets, pissing off consumers—and lying about all of it during a joint session of Congress on primetime TV. Wow, Trump had a big week! Oh, I almost forgot to mention that – also this week—we learned that several states have measles outbreaks. The upside of the measles outbreaks is that DOGE has rehired some of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) staff they fired. Perhaps we do need a few public health people! (Will Arizona have a measles outbreak? We have the same personal exemption for vaccines that Texas does.) So much winning!Ugh … pass the anti-depressants before RFK Jr. outlaws them! Today's episode features a wide-ranging interview with three long-time political authors from Blog for Arizona. Tucson lawyer and former prosecutor Michael Bryan founded Blog for Arizona more than 20 years ago. B4AZ has been published continuously since then. Retired lawyer and former newspaper journalist, Larry Bodine is the past chair of the Legislative District 18 Democrats in Pima County and has been on the Board of Democrats of Greater Tucson for five years, including three years as president. Phoenician David Gordon has had a career in education and is a successful science fiction author, in addition to being a prolific political blogger. His experience in science fiction writing probably informs his coverage of the Arizona Legislature.Podcast Time Stamps | The Ugly American Brand Returns | 0:29 | It's the Economy Stupid | 4:02 | The 'Stable Genius' at Work | 5:51 | Shadow Group [DOGE] Dismantles 'Shadow Government' [Deep State] | 7:14 | Is Trump's Election Part of a Antisystems Revolt? | 8:14 | Democrats Shouldn't Defend Systems that Are Broken | 8:38 | Podcast Interview: Today's Guests | 9:55 | Strategic Alliances Crumbling | 11:31 | DOGE Is a Challenge to Constitutional Order | 17:05 | Are We Watching an Antisystems Revolt Unfold? | 23:51 | Egg Prices and Where the Democrats Went Wrong in 2024 | 27:49 | Disinformation and the Media Landscape | 40:27 | Do the Dems Need 'Better Stories' or Better Listening Skills? | 42:42 | Institutional Change | 50:23 | The Resistance Can't Be Invisible | 57:54 | Arizona Politics | 1:02:23 | Diversity Equity and Inclusion | 1:09:37 | 2026: Can Dems Keep the Statewide Offices They Hold and Oust Ciscomani? | 1:14:49 | Parting Thoughts | 1:27:03You can watch my podcast on YouTube or listen to it on popular podcast platforms including Apple, Spotify, iHeartRadio, Podcast Addict, Podchaser, Pocket Casts, Deezer, Listen Notes and True Fans.

On our last episode special guest Michael Bryan, Open Environments, explained the basics of AI, where it all came from, and a glimpse of where it is going. But he had so much more to share! In this episode Michael discusses how AI is now learning to reason for itself (!), and it might use that reasoning to give you some very bad advice. AI will change the way we work, how we receive healthcare, and much more. Some of it sounds great, but it's not all positive - and it's not just us pointing out that there are some serious concerns ahead. Is it just me, or is Artificial Intelligence (AI) just omnipresent? It seems that everywhere we turn, we're told an AI ability has been embedded. But when did all that start? And where is it going?? In 2020, President Obama called the filibuster a relic of the Jim Crow era. Obama was putting it mildly. Historically, the filibuster has been a primary weapon against civil rights legislation for more than 100 years. Many Americans have celebrated the removal of statues and renaming of boulevards that glorified Confederate leaders. Taking down statues is just feel-good public relations as long as our politicians silently kill important legislation with a Senate rule that has been used to perpetuate structural racism and white supremacy since the Civil War. In 2021, the filibuster is being used to stop much-need legislation that would protect and expand voting rights, reproductive rights, worker rights and civil rights; reform policing; provide a path to citizenship for Dreamers; and tackle poverty. Blocking these bills from becoming law will disproportionately hurt people of color, particularly women of color. This is Jim Crow 2021.The filibuster has been in the news a lot lately because several key pieces of legislation are currently stalled in Congress due to a filibuster threat. What is the filibuster? How can crucial voting rights legislation be stopped because it doesn't have 60 votes in the US Senate? What happened to passing laws with a simple majority? What is a cloture vote? What does it mean when people call for elimination or reform of the filibuster? My guests on this podcast break down the history of the filibuster, how it works, what reform would look like, and what's at stake if Congress fails to reform or eliminate this arcane custom. Joining me today are two long-term colleagues of mine at Blog for Arizona, Michael Bryan and Larry Bodine. Mike is the founder and managing editor of Blog for Arizona. Fifteen months out from the 2022 election, the US is awash with conspiracy theories about the results of the 2020 election and the COVID19 pandemic. Arizona Senate's infamous audit of Maricopa County's 2020 ballots is rumored to be winding down, finally. What can we expect from the so-called "fraudit" report? Thanks to low vaccination rates, the COVID19 delta variant is running rampant in red states like Arizona and filling hospital beds. Unhappy voters are fighting back against the Arizona Legislature with multiple referenda, lawsuits and citizens initiatives. My guests are Michael Bryan and Larry Bodine from Blog for Arizona help me break down the crazy state of politics in Arizona in Episode 1 of a View from the Left Side.

Brian Fremeau (Football Outsiders, creator of FEI) and Michael Bryan (18 Stripes) join to break down what the numbers show about Notre Dame's 2019 season, how the Irish currently fit into the college football world and what you should expect from Iowa State in the bowl game. Please consider donating to the Center for the Homeless in South Bend here.
Michael Bryan of 18Stripes.com stops by to talk about what the advanced stats tell us about the Louisville game, whether we can extrapolate any of that for the rest of the season, what we can learn from the New Mexico game, Notre Dame's future opponents, big picture college football thoughts, and tips for those who want to add a few more advanced metrics into their lives. Read all of Michael's stuff here.
I had a great chat with Mike the other day about his career to date including the many bands he has played in. We had a laugh! At the end of the podcast we play the James Scott Skinner tune St Mungo's Welcome to Scott Skinner. You can also watch that performance here! (We played it outside his house). This is St Mungo's Welcome to Scott Skinner played by me and great guitarist Michael Bryan. It's James Scott Skinner tune and was written for the Celtic Tournament at Glasgow 4th Nov 1889. It appears in his Harp and Claymore Collection of music. If you like this material and would like to help support my music making please check out my Patreon http://www.patreon.com/simonthoumire
With Christmas travel looming we thought we'd go ahead and have this discussion (there may be more episodes previewing the Cotton Bowl to follow if time permits) with Michael Bryan of 18 Stripes. Do the Tigers have any weaknesses? Can the Irish defensive line take over the game and is there any way to neutralize Clemson's? Is there any kind of mental edge available to either side? What sort of architectural treachery awaits us in Jerry World? Did Michigan make the playoff? All of this and more. Michael Bryan of 18 Stripes swings by to discuss the impressive win over Stanford, the offense with Ian Book, the incredible defense, the upcoming trip to Blacksburg and much more.
Michael Bryan of 18 Stripes stops by to discuss the biggest What Ifs of Brian Kelly's time in South Bend, from quarterback churn and defensive coordinator hires to Baylor vs. Kansas State. Read Michael's rankings here: https://www.18stripes.com/top-10-what-ifs-of-the-kelly-era/
Michael Bryan of 18 Stripes swings by to talk about Mike Elko leaving, potential defensive coordinator candidates, the Citrus Bowl and an early look at next year's roster. Note: As we finished recording this, the South Bend Tribune reported that Notre Dame had agreed to a $1.5 million deal to stay with Notre Dame and then A&M upped the offer again. They also reported that there was no personality rift between Brian Kelly and Elko, so this looks like a money move. This is a long description, but wanted to provide context because we were talking as more details were coming out.
Michael Bryan of 18Stripes.com (@MichaelBryanMB) swings by to grade the Irish's first four games of the season and offer some insight on the Miami RedHawks. Read Michael's work here: https://www.18stripes.com/author/michael-bryan/ Sign up for the Rakes Report here: www.tinyletter.com/rakesreport
