We are discussing Hayao Miyazaki's 1992 anti-war love letter to aviation and flying pigs: Porco Rosso! Including; gender roles, the effects of war, curses, rising fascism, romance, cute kids, ambiguous endings, and much more. Remember, it's better to be a pig than a fascist. This episode was originally released on May 1, 2023 I Love This You Should Too is hosted by Samantha and Indy Randhawa Porco Rosso (Japanese: 紅の豚, Hepburn: Kurenai no Buta, lit. 'Crimson Pig') is a 1992 Japanese animated adventure-fantasy film[1] written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. It is based on Hikōtei Jidai ("The Age of the Flying Boat"), a three-part 1989 watercolor manga by Miyazaki.[2] It stars the voices of Shūichirō Moriyama, Tokiko Kato, Akemi Okamura and Akio Ōtsuka. Animated by Studio Ghibli for Tokuma Shoten, Japan Airlines and the Nippon Television Network, it was produced by Toshio Suzuki and distributed by Toho. Its score is by Japanese composer Joe Hisaishi. The plot revolves around an Italian World War I ex-fighter ace, now living as a freelance bounty hunter chasing "air pirates" in the Adriatic Sea. However, an unusual curse has transformed him into an anthropomorphic pig. Once called Marco Pagot (Marco Rossolini in the American version), he is now known to the world as "Porco Rosso", Italian for "Red Pig".

Paul talks about learning to fly, his adventures flying his Piper Cub in Japan while running a language school there, and flying air displays there with fellow Kiwi pilot Robert Fry and others. He talks about flying in Australia where he’d planned to buy a tourism flying business and how things changed. And flying in Papua New Guinea. And then he ended up purchasing a Lake Buccaneer in New Zealand and he took it up to Vanuatu and achieved his lifelong dream of becoming a flying boat pilot in the Pacific, just like Jake Cutter in one of his favourite childhood television shows, Tales of the Gold Monkey, and the 1992 film Porco Rosso. Paul has some wonderful adventure stories and ells of some seriously scary moments in the air, in Japan and in the Pacific. He has real insight into the joys of flight too. Last year in the month of April, I embarked on what would end up being one of the most exciting weeks of my aviation career, training 7 highly experienced pilots how to fly the floating hull aircraft on a 75-year-old Republic Seebee. I had always dreamt of flying the seebee, but never before had I even seen one until I was in formation with the one I was about to instruct on, sitting in a Gazelle helicopter with the great man and my guest today, Jim Whalley at the controls.
Launched in 1953 Hobart to Sydney's Ansett Flying Boat Service departed from the River Derwent. However it was a very rocky start on the inaugural flight.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The city of Jerusalem, established by David to be the home of God, is a glimpse of what a divine city could look like, but even Jerusalem becomes corrupt. Is there any kind of city we can actually put our hope in? Jesus seemed to think so. He said he was the place where Heaven and Earth are fully united, allowing God and humanity to dwell together. Then he took it a step further to say his followers are a city on a hill, the city of God. In this episode, Tim and Jon discuss the new Jerusalem.View more resources on our website →Timestamps Part one (00:00-11:08)Part two (11:08-25:46)Part three (25:46-33:32)Part four (33:32-47:31)Part five (47:31-1:02:52)Referenced ResourcesThe City We Became: A Novel, N.K. Eighty years ago, everyone knew his name. He was a Hollywood filmmaker, an airplane engineer, a wealthy businessman, and a daring pilot. Newspapers and film screens were filled with tales of his next exciting project. He funded expensive movies with dangerous stunts and built machines only he would dare to build. With each new project, he pushed the boundaries of what was possible. This is the story of Howard Hughes and the giant flying boat. Flying to Australia is a chore today, but 85 years ago, Imperial Airways and Qantas launched an audacious service with the wonderful Shorts C.23 Empire Flying Boat. These aircraft cut the journey from Southampton to Sydney to around nine days and, more importantly than the passenger service, allowed for a new rapid air mail service across the Empire. Phil Vabre is the President of the Civil Aviation Historical Society in Australia and runs the superb Airways Museum at Essendon Airport, just on the edge of Melbourne. Phil is the chap to talk to about the flying boat service to Australia and in part 1 of a two-part chat, we look at the origins of the service, the creation of the C-Class flying boat and what logistics were required to keep these marvellous aircraft in the air.You can learn more about the Civil Aviation Historical Society and the Airways Museum at Essendon at their website here: https://www.airwaysmuseum.com/ You can check out Phil's flying boat articles in The Aviation Historian, issues TAH9, TAH17, TAH31 and TAH32 via their website where you can get the back issues and subscribe here: https://www.theaviationhistorian.com/ Please check out our sponsor, the Pima Air and Space Museum, through the links below: Visit the Pima Air and Space Museum's website here: https://pimaair.org/Learn more about the Titan Missle Museum here: https://titanmissilemuseum.org/Find out who is in the Arizona Aviation Hall of Fame here: https://pimaair.org/about-us/arizona-aviation-hall-of-fame/Want to know how the Tucson Military Vehicle Museum is progressing? When anyone talks about twin engine flying boats, they think of the Grumman aircraft, the Goose, Widgeon, Mallard and Albatross. Yes ok, there are others, the Catalina for example, but they are all very old. A gigantic flying boat from Soviet times could bring tourists flocking to the Caspian Sea. Even if the ‘monster' no longer flies, it is still very impressive.

Part 2 this week and we continue looking at the subject, which we accidentally stumbled on and have a habit of of stumbling across random WW2 flying bases in Australia. Hey it happens! From where we were last episode, just south of Swan Hill in Victoria we dash 2000 kms westward to Matilda Bay. This is located on the shores of Perth's Swan River. Looking ahead across the water you have fantastic views of the city skyline and a smattering of very, very expensive yachts, look behind and you can see the beautiful sandstone buildings and the velvet soft sporting fields of the University of Western Australia. It's a very special place it's because during the second world war the US Navy had a fleet of Flying boats based right here at Matilda Bay.What a sight it must have been for the people of Perth.Have something that you think we should feature, then please drop us an email at phatcat@iinet.net.au Like us on Facebook Follow us on Instagram Please leave a 5 Star rating from wherever you are listening and we would love you to leave a review, go on and we'll give you a personalized shout out!Support us on PatreonListen on Apple PodcastsListen on Google Podcasts Listen on i Heart RadioListen on SpotifyThank you for supporting us and our guests.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/user?u=27844421)Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/user?u=27844421) Hosted on Acast. This episode of the Road Less Travelled we discover Bendigo in the heart of the Victorian goldfields. We set up base and checked out this lovely regional centre. This town has a huge history, with plenty to see and do. We head down a historical gold mine, and continue the step back in time along the Murray River. In the middle of the most unlikely of places we stumbled upon a secret World War 2 flying boat base. Hello, and welcome to This Day in History. Here's what happened on January 14th. These days, American presidents regularly log thousands of flight miles a year on Air Force One, but back on this day in 1943, air travel was still a rarity. That's when Franklin Roosevelt flew on a Boeing 314 Flying Boat to a World War II strategy session with British prime minister Winston Churchill in Casablanca, becoming the first U.S. president to travel by plane for official business.
