The Geoengineering Gamble: When Sky Is No Longer the Limit (ft. Hans van der Loo, CEO of the Blue Cooling Initiative)

Every so often, a bold new climate solution emerges - hailed as the answer to humanity's looming environmental crisis. From carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies to nature-based solutions, these innovations offer hope. But one of the most provocative - and polarizing - is geoengineering. Unlike traditional mitigation strategies, geoengineering doesn't aim to address the root causes of climate change. Instead, it proposes fixing the climate at a planetary scale, either by cooling the planet through the injection of particles into the stratosphere or fertilizing oceans. So what happens when humanity decides to directly hack the sky ? Is this a Faustian pact for short-term gains, with long-term climate catastrophe waiting to unfold? In this episode of 2050 Investors, host Kokou Agbo-Bloua dives deep into the world of geoengineering - what it is, what it isn't, and why it's so controversial. From ancient examples of human attempts to manipulate nature to cutting-edge techniques such as Carbon Dioxide Removal and Marine Cloud Brightening (MCB), Kokou explores the fine line between innovation and interference. He also examines the profound ethical, environmental and political questions that geoengineering raises, and whether these might encourage individuals and governments to become complacent. To help unpack these complexities, Kokou is joined by Hans van der Loo, chairman of the Institute for Integrated Economic Research and CEO of the Blue Cooling Initiative, which focuses on MCB. Together, they explore the future of geoengineering in an age of rapid technological advancement - where AI and data science may improve precision but can't eliminate uncertainty. Hans argues that geoengineering may be one of humanity's best remaining options to buy much-needed time - but only if it is done responsibly.About this showWelcome to 2050 Investors, your monthly guide to understanding the intricate connections between finance, globalisation, and ESG.Join host Kokou Agbo-Bloua, Head of Economics, Cross-Asset & Quant Research at Societe Generale, for an exploration of the economic and market megatrends shaping the present and future, and how these trends might influence our progress to meeting 2050's challenging global sustainability targets. In each episode, Kokou deep-dives into the events impacting the economy, financial markets, the planet, and society. Cerebral Women Art Talks Podcast

Ep.241 Dora Jeridi's work is characterized by a dynamic, expressive approach to painting, blending intense emotion with powerful physicality. She continuously adds to her compositions until they take on a spirit of their own, like painterly symphonies where fragmented forms emerge from a sea of expressive brushstrokes. Jeridi conceals and unveils her forms through the careful layering of various mediums: oil, charcoal, and occasionally ball-point pen or spray paint. Interested in the tension between figuration and abstraction, Jeridi's canvases are marked by a striking use of contrasts—chaotic colors, diverse textures, quiet and violent subjects—reflecting complexities of the human experience. Her paintings evoke narratives that are both enigmatic and visceral, autobiographical and societal, where her figures become universal in their anonymity. Jeridi encourages us to dwell in uncertainty, to explore the spaces where meaning remains both elusive and profound. Waarom is tokenisatie zo interessant? Think about the last advert you saw. Was it the first or the 100th time you saw it? Today, the average person sees around 5,000 to 10,000 ads a day - a significant jump from the 500 ads a day in the 1970s. So, with all these ads - from social media to cable TV - vying for our attention, it's time for a reckoning. In this episode of 2050 Investors, we ask: has advertising been a force for good, or has it contributed to patterns of over-consumption? Join host Kokou Agbo-Bloua on a journey through the fascinating world of advertising, exploring its evolution from ancient practices to modern strategies that shape consumer behaviour and cultural identity. Kokou also examines the rapid growth of this multi-billion-dollar industry, its future amid rapid developments in AI and, of course, the pros and cons of an industry credited with creating some of the world's most iconic slogans, jingles and moments. Later in the episode, Kokou welcomes guest Thomas Kolster, a leading marketing and sustainability expert and author of Goodvertising. Thomas shares his unique insights on how advertising can shift from a consumer-driven model to a purpose-driven one, emphasising the importance of aligning brand values with consumer ethics. He discusses the challenges brands face in distinguishing genuine efforts from greenwashing and how to authentically engage with socially conscious consumers. There's certainly something for everyone in this episode!About this showWelcome to 2050 Investors, your monthly guide to understanding the intricate connections between finance, globalisation, and ESG.Join host Kokou Agbo-Bloua, Head of Economics, Cross-Asset & Quant Research at Societe Generale, for an exploration of the economic and market megatrends shaping the present and future, and how these trends might influence our progress to meeting 2050's challenging global sustainability targets. In each episode, Kokou deep-dives into the events impacting the economy, financial markets, the planet, and society. In the iconic "Sell me this pen" scene from "The Wolf of Wall Street," the art of sales is brilliantly encapsulated by the need to first understand what the client truly desires. This approach emphasizes that successful salesmanship begins with identifying and addressing the specific needs and wants of the client, be it a pen, a car, a house, or even an option based systematic strategies on US Equities. In this episode of 2050 Investors, Kokou delves into the duality of selling as both an art and a science. Far from the realm of fantasy, salespeople bring a unique blend of creativity and expertise to the world of banking.Join us as we explore different sales techniques from AIDA to SPIN, the evolution of sales strategies over the decades, the nuanced dynamics of the salesperson's role, and the qualities that define the best in the business. We also highlight the essential steps in the sales process and the critical role of salespeople in the financial markets.Later, Kokou sits down with Yann Garnier, Head of Sales for Global Markets at Societe Generale, to gain his unique insights into the importance of understanding time - both linear and cyclical - in building authentic client relationships across cultures and geographies, the impact of artificial intelligence, and the future of the sales profession.Whether you're a seasoned professional or new to the world of sales, this episode offers valuable lessons and perspectives on building lasting customer relationships that you're unlikely to find in a traditional playbook.About this showWelcome to 2050 Investors, your monthly guide to understanding the intricate connections between finance, globalisation, and ESG.Join host Kokou Agbo-Bloua, Head of Economics, Cross-Asset & Quant Research at Societe Generale, for an exploration of the economic and market megatrends shaping the present and future, and how these trends might influence our progress to meeting 2050's challenging global sustainability targets. In each episode, Kokou deep-dives into the events impacting the economy, financial markets, the planet, and society. How did the banking system evolve from a simple bench—the very origin of the word “bank”—into the sophisticated institutions that drive the global economy?Banks are more than just institutions. With over 4,000 years of history, they have played a pivotal role in powering industrial revolutions, transforming dreams into reality, and adapting to the evolving needs of clients across generations. From economic booms to busts, they have stood the test of time, channeling funding like the lifeblood of the economy and serving as critical cogs in the machinery of society. Banks have turned the alchemy of compound interest—Einstein's “8th wonder of the world”—into a driving force behind economic growth. In this episode of 2050 Investors, Kokou Agbo-Bloua dives into the essential role of banks and the foundations of the global banking system. Through his analysis, he explores the power of compound interest, the history of banking and the evolution of business models and regulatory frameworks. Highlighting their role as financial intermediaries, Kokou unpacks how they contribute to societal and economic progress through fractional reserve banking.Later in the episode, Kokou interviews Slawomir Krupa, as the bank marks its 160th anniversary. Slawomir reflects on how Societe Generale has remained true to its original mission of combining innovation with strength in its business model. He discusses the bank's focus on sustainability and responsibility, emphasizing its vital role in financing the economy, supporting transformational projects, and offering strategic advice to clients to drive these developments. He also shares insights on how climate change and AI are driving institutions to reinvent themselves. This episode is a compelling exploration of the past, present, and future of banking, offering fresh insights into how this age-old institution continues to influence our lives and economies.About this showWelcome to 2050 Investors, your monthly guide to understanding the intricate connections between finance, globalisation, and ESG. Join host Kokou Agbo-Bloua, Head of Economics, Cross-Asset & Quant Research at Societe Generale, for an exploration of the economic and market megatrends shaping the present and future, and how these trends might influence our progress to meeting 2050's challenging global sustainability targets. If you like 2050 Investors, please leave a five-star review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify. What would you do if you were a top legal counsel managing billion-dollar financial transactions and leading a global team of 50 at the world's largest banking groups? Most would stick to the safety of such a prestigious career. But not Fatou Sagna Sow. Born and raised in Paris, Fatou left her high-flying legal career at Societe Generale and BNP Paribas to return to her roots in Senegal. With her husband and two children, she traded a life of glamour in Paris for the challenges of driving economic and technological growth in Africa. Now the founder and CEO of New Deal Consulting, and a former advisor to the Senegalese President, Fatou is transforming local opportunities by empowering young talent from Senegal, France, and beyond. Her story is one of bold faith, careful planning, and fearless execution. Key Highlights of Our Interview: Trading Parisian Comfort for Dakar's Call “I had a great career in France, but it wasn't enough. Senegal was calling me—a chance to challenge myself and see if I could truly make a difference in my home country.” A Legacy for the Next Generation “As a mother, I wanted my kids to know their roots. To experience Senegal fully, so they can grow up understanding the world without barriers, enriched by both cultures.” Facing Fears and Finding Support “I worried about giving up financial security and providing for my kids, but I wasn't alone. My strong network, including ministers and my husband's connections, made the transition less daunting.” Bananas to the Rescue “Turning banana fiber into sanitary pads? Yep, that's happening in Senegal. The Luna Na project is about innovation and solving local challenges with global ideas. It's a first in Senegal and Africa, and it's changing lives.” A Vision for Change “Luna Na isn't just a project; it's a movement. It's about empowering Africa's youth with opportunities, innovation, and hope for a brighter future. Watching this transformation unfold is my proudest accomplishment.” _________________________ Connect with Us: Host: Vince Chan | Guest: Fatou Sagna Sow ______________________ Chief Change Officer: Make Change Ambitiously. What kind of risk taker are you ? Imagine being presented with a choice: receive $100 with 100% certainty or take a chance on $200 with 50% probability. Do you dare to take a leap of faith, or do you play it safe? The answer may reveal more than you think.Risk aversion is ingrained in our human heritage. Our ancestors who took excessive risks did not live long enough to pass on their genes to the next generation. Yet risk taking is the driving force behind societal progress. Whether you are a portfolio manager, a trader or an entrepreneur, managing risk is an integral part of the human experience. In this episode of 2050 Investors, host Kokou Agbo-Bloua takes a closer look at risk and its role in the financial markets. Kokou explores traditional risk management models such as Value at Risk, volatility and heteroskedasticity (volatility of volatility) and explores the interplay between Main Street and Wall Street. Later in the episode, Kokou sits down with Hatem Mustapha, Co-Head of Global Markets, to discuss the ins and outs of managing risk in global market activities. They examine different risk management models, their pros and cons, and the importance of setting an absolute level of risk consistent with one's capital and ability to absorb losses, while taking smart risks with a favourable risk/return profile. Drawing on over 30 years of experience in global markets, Hatem also discusses the biggest mistakes investors make when managing risk, the role of artificial intelligence (AI) and the world of 'unknown unknowns'.About this showWelcome to 2050 Investors, your monthly guide to understanding the intricate connections between finance, globalisation, and ESG.Join host Kokou Agbo-Bloua, Head of Economics, Cross-Asset & Quant Research at Societe Generale, for an exploration of the economic and market megatrends shaping the present and future, and how these trends might influence our progress to meeting 2050's challenging global sustainability targets. In each episode, Kokou deep-dives into the events impacting the economy, financial markets, the planet, and society. $25 trillion ! This is the sum injected into the economy by Governments and Central Banks to protect a significant portion of the global economy during the Covid crisis. Where does this funding come from, and what are the impacts of such government spending? Is this strategy sustainable in the long term? These are important questions to consider, particularly since we are in a year where half of the world's population is heading to the polls and many candidates are advocating for a 'whatever it takes' approach.Even if we are near full employment, witnessing rising wages, have defeated the Coronavirus, and have inflation levels gradually approaching central bank objectives, let us not overlook the consequences of this approach. The massive government spending to save lives, known as 'whatever it takes,' is not without costs. As the saying goes, there‘s no such thing as a free lunch! The result? Endemic sovereign debt and budget deficits – a metaphorical portrayal of 'original sin.'In this episode of 2050 Investors, Kokou Agbo-Bloua will delve into sovereign debt sustainability and explore how governments can balance their finances amid high-interest rates while meeting the demands of voters. Joining the discussion is Anatoli Annenkov, Societe Generale's Senior Economist for Europe, who will analyse the relationship between public debt and central banks. He will explain how central banks can help stabilize sovereign debt crises and shed light on the importance of their independence.About this showWelcome to 2050 Investors, your monthly guide to understanding the intricate connections between finance, globalisation, and ESG.Join host Kokou Agbo-Bloua, Head of Economics, Cross-Asset & Quant Research at Societe Generale, for an exploration of the economic and market megatrends shaping the present and future, and how these trends might influence our progress to meeting 2050's challenging global sustainability targets. In each episode, Kokou deep-dives into the events impacting the economy, financial markets, the planet, and society. In this episode, we chat with Geoff McNamara, Co-founder and Non-exec director of Tesoro Gold who are focused on exploring gold assets with the potential to be district-scale mining projects whilst developing their flagship asset, their El Zorro project. Geoff has over 30 years of international resource sector experience as a Founder, Geologist, Project Manager & Fund Manager working for the likes of Societe Generale, Ivanhoe Mines, Lion Ore International, and Western Mining Corporation. We discuss what Tesoro Gold has been up to with their drilling campaign, what work they have been doing with the local communities, and an update on what is happening in Chile as a country and mining destination. KEY TAKEAWAYS Tesoro Gold's El Zorro project is the first intrusive related gold system discovered in Chile, with a 1.5 million ounce resource and potential for further expansion. The El Zorro project is strategically located near the coast, national highway, and infrastructure, making it an ideal working environment for mining operations. Tesoro Gold actively engages with local communities in Caldera, Copiapo, and Chanaral, sourcing personnel and services locally and supporting community initiatives. Ongoing drilling programs aim to expand the Ternera deposit to 2 million ounces in the next 12-18 months and potentially to 3 million ounces within 24-36 months. The outlook for copper and gold is optimistic, driven by supply-demand dynamics, infrastructure needs, and central bank buying, with potential for significant growth in the market. BEST MOMENTS "We've made a discovery, as I mentioned, that's the first intrusive related gold system discovered and defined in Chile." "We do have a 3 million ounce exploration target on the Ternera deposit, which is, as I mentioned, currently 1.5 million ounces."  "The reality is, yes, tax rates have gone up for copper miners. They now sit around that sort of mid-20s for corporate tax."  "I think the market's very favourable for copper. I think artificial intelligence on its own is going to drive a lot of demand for copper."  VALUABLE RESOURCES Mail:        rob@mining-international.org LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rob-tyson-3a26a68/ X:              https://twitter.com/MiningRobTyson YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/DigDeepTheMiningPodcast  Web:        http://www.mining-international.org Website: https://tesorogold.com.au/ Company LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/tesoro-gold/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/geoff-mcnamara-020867219/ Email: geoff.mcnamara@tesorogold.com.au X: https://x.com/tesorogoldltd ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is the Founder and Director of Mining International Ltd, a leading global recruitment and headhunting consultancy based in the UK specialising in all areas of mining across the globe from first-world to third-world countries from Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Is nuclear power the key to a carbon-neutral future or an accident waiting to happen? Non-hydro renewables such as wind and solar are predicted to play a major role in the future. However, one of these energy solutions has divided public opinion more than others. To mention the name "nuclear" is to conjure up the boogie man or "he who must not be named". By 2050, some 10 billion people will need some form of energy to eat, travel, work and protect themselves from the weather. McKinsey's Energy 2050 research report predicts that demand for electricity will grow twice as fast as demand for transport, while at the same time fossil fuels will decline. So how will we power the future? In this episode of 2050 Investors, Kokou Agbo-Bloua delves into the controversial topic of nuclear power, exploring its history, potential benefits and risks in the context of the global energy transition. He also highlights the dual nature of nuclear energy as both a powerful source of clean energy and a potentially catastrophic force capable of altering life at the atomic level. To explore the issue further, Kokou orchestrates a virtual Oxford-style debate between experts for and against nuclear power. The pro-nuclear side includes Bill Gates, Ernest Moniz, George Monbiot and James Hansen, advocating for nuclear power as a necessary tool to combat climate change. The anti-nuclear side includes Tom Steyer and Mark Jacobson, who criticise its economic feasibility and safety concerns. Each expert presents their opening statement, outlining their position and the key matters surrounding nuclear power. This episode will help you understand the fears, facts, and fission, so that you can make up your own mind about nuclear power.About this showWelcome to 2050 Investors, your monthly guide to understanding the intricate connections between finance, globalisation, and ESG.Join host Kokou Agbo-Bloua, Head of Economics, Cross-Asset & Quant Research at Societe Generale, for an exploration of the economic and market megatrends shaping the present and future, and how these trends might influence our progress to meeting 2050's challenging global sustainability targets. In each episode, Kokou deep-dives into the events impacting the economy, financial markets, the planet, and society. Abraham Lincoln once said, “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail”. So why do well-known risk managements models fail to predict major events? Is it possible to know when and where the next crisis will come from? And how can we be better prepared? In this episode of 2050 Investors, host Kokou Agbo-Bloua explores the theory of Black Swans, created by Nassim Nicholas Taleb, and its relevance to sustainability, climate change, and financial markets.Delving into the world of the unexpected, he draws parallels between the dramatic twists and turns of Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake" and the unpredictability of life and finance, to investigate how sudden, unforeseen events—Black Swans—impact markets and our globalized world. Kokou explains how these rare events, like the 2008 financial crisis and the recent COVID-19 pandemic, reshape financial landscapes. In the context of climate change, these black swans are rebranded as ‘Green Swans', symbolizing the increasing frequency and severity of climate events such as floods, heat waves, and wildfires. Join host Kokou Agbo-Bloua as he assesses the impact of these Green Swans on our ability to manage risks and how they pose significant challenges for our economies and sustainability efforts. Kokou also emphasizes the importance of understanding the limitations of traditional risk management models and adapt in a rapidly changing world.Lastly, he explores how the principles of antifragility, another term coined by Taleb, can help systems benefit from external stressors, making them more resilient in the face of volatility and uncertainty.About this showWelcome to 2050 Investors, your monthly guide to understanding the intricate connections between finance, globalisation, and ESG.Join host Kokou Agbo-Bloua, Head of Economics, Cross-Asset & Quant Research at Societe Generale, for an exploration of the economic and market megatrends shaping the present and future, and how these trends might influence our progress to meeting 2050's challenging global sustainability targets. In each episode, Kokou deep-dives into the events impacting the economy, financial markets, the planet, and society. The Chinese have a saying, 'A peaceful life has nothing to do with the passage of time'. This sound reminder points to the importance of enjoying life regardless of age. After all, age is just a number, right? Ageing has become a topical issue in the mainstream recently as experts warn of the incoming 'Silver Avalanche', which has already swept Europe and is making its way to Asia.Global life expectancy has risen from 51 to 72 since 1960 and is expected to reach 77 by 2050. It is projected that there will be around 2.4 billion elderly (aged 65 or over) or 24% of the world's population by the end of the century. Now, it is more important than ever to prepare for this demographic shift and ensure that older adults have access to the resources they need to live fulfilling lives. This, however, presents a dilemma, as while life expectancy is rising, families are shrinking as people have fewer children. The far-reaching effects are already being felt in many countries, including China. In this episode of 2050 Investors, Kokou reflects on the ageing crisis and its impact on the world's population, its economy, and the planet. The conversation then shifts to an analysis of the silver economy: With the assistance of Yoda from Star Wars, who was once Siri but aged due to planned obsolescence, Kokou explores the impact of a shrinking workforce, pension fund deficits, and escalating healthcare costs on fiscal and monetary policy.Later in the episode, Kokou talks with Wei Yao, Chief Economist for APAC at Societe Generale. With China's robust economic growth lifting millions out of poverty over the past decades, how does the country now address the imminent reality of an ageing population? There are solutions on the horizon, such as learning from countries like Japan and focusing on healthy ageing. However, striking a balance between economic growth and social welfare whilst creating a sustainable future is a complex challenge.About this showWelcome to 2050 Investors your monthly guide to understanding the intricate connections between finance, globalisation, and ESG.Join host Kokou Agbo-Bloua, Head of Economics, Cross-Asset & Quant Research at Societe Generale, for an exploration of the economic and market megatrends shaping the present and future, and how these trends might influence our progress to meeting 2050's challenging global sustainability targets. In each episode, Kokou deep-dives into the events impacting the economy, financial markets, the planet, and society. Strap on your boots, don your hats, grab your pitchforks and mangroves, because we are going carbon hunting! Although carbon dioxide makes up a measly 0.04% of our atmosphere or 421 parts per million (ppm), it is about double the average concentration seen over the past 3 million years. All of this extra carbon dioxide accumulated since the pre-industrial era has already caused global warming of 1.1 degrees Celsius, destabilized Earth's climate and started the 6th mass extinction of biodiversity in our planet's history. One solution: put a bounty on carbon's head and bring it to justice, aka carbon pricing. Since its introduction by the European Union in 2005, the idea of carbon pricing has long been touted by economists as one of the best ways to tackle climate change: making polluters pay for the environmental damage their emissions cause.Join Kokou Agbo-Bloua as he travels back in time to the beginning of time itself, the Big Bang, to trace the history of carbon from its cosmic origins to its role in climate change. He also explores the science behind the formation of carbon, its role in the carbon cycle and its impact on the Earth's atmosphere. But the hunt doesn't stop there. We'll also dive into the world of carbon markets and natural capital solutions. Kokou talks to Eric Schoumsky, Head of Natural Capital Solutions at Societe Generale, about the role of carbon markets in financing nature-based solutions and how the market could evolve by 2050. Should the world's central banks (Fed, ECB, BoE...) launch a coordinated "green quantitative easing" programme to simply print the $3.5 trillion a year needed to finance the energy transition? Is this a realistic solution or too green to be true? This episode of the 2050 investors podcast puts the 'central' back in central banks. Since their creation in the 17th century, central banks have been tasked with managing monetary policy, overseeing the banking system and the core mandate of maintaining 'price stability'. But climate change is becoming a major threat to their mandate, posing a real risk to economic and financial stability in the medium to long term.In this latest episode, Kokou explores the delicate balancing act that central banks must perform as they seek to be independent in ensuring that inflation remains under control, while at the same time contributing to economic and financial stability and playing a central role in the fight against climate change. There is more to central banking than meets the eye.Don't worry if you've forgotten your Economics 101 course, or if you've never taken one, because we're going to give you a quick crash course in the complicated role of the central bank, using references from the series Money Heist (La Casa de Papel) and the wonderful and magical world of Lord of the Rings. And, of course, we take you down memory lane with a brief history of central banks and their evolution from World War I through 20th century Japan to the recent 'inflation outbreak' following the Covid19 pandemic.Later in the episode you will hear extracts from an episode of "The ECB Podcast" entitled "Tackling climate change as a central bank, between motivation, obligation and limitation".
