The Creature from the Black Lagoon was always my favorite classic monster movie growing up. The "creature" is certainly one of the most original and iconic monsters to ever grace the silver screen. But did you know that it was designed by a woman? Millicent Patrick was a makeup artist, animator, special effect designer, and an actress, but unfortunately her contributions to the horror film genre have largely been forgotten. My guest today is Mallory O'Meara and she has written the first biography of Millicent's life and career in Hollywood, The Lady from the Black Lagoon: Hollywood Monsters and the Lost Legacy of Millicent Patrick. Mallory is an award-winning author, co-host of the literary podcast Reading Glasses, and she works in the horror movie industry as a screenwriter and producer. Today, Mallory and I discuss Millicent's unique childhood, how she entered Hollywood, and how the film industry failed to recognize her achievements. If you've never experienced this classic film or want to revisit it, you can rent or buy The Creature from the Black Lagoon from Amazon Prime Video. October is almost over and so is our look back at the classic Universal monsters. The month comes to a close with one of the greatest creature features of all time, 1954's Creature From The Black Lagoon, the movie that introduced the world to the Gill-Man! The Jack Arnold directed classic features a wonderful ensemble cast, an iconic creature design courtesy of Millicent Patrick, and some of the most beautiful underwater sequences ever put on film. Its influence can be felt on such modern classics as 1981's The Thing and 1987's Predator. News updates from in and around Cozy Corner include breast cancer awareness at Cozy Corner Middle School, Burt Biederman's landmark legal case against Christmas music, and a Gill-Man creature who likes to drink Old Milwaukee Beer. Commercials include The Straight Dope with Harrison Ford (the Big HF), Bustin' Balls with Burt Biederman (one of Cozy Corner's oldest citizens), Bagz and Boardz starring Scott Rice and Lothar (wielder of the Wand of Wussification), The Power of Woman starring Lorena Luftluckett (aka “The Hammer”), a special invitation to a screening of Smokey and The Bandit courtesy of the Coyote, and an update from Lazer Lanez. We've only mentioned him before, but today we go all out with our love for that mysterious and dangerous, yet misunderstood, monster from the depths - the Creature from the Black Lagoon! If you've been listening to Planet 8 for any length of time, you've probably heard us heap praises on Creech, but now we have a whole episode devoted to the Gill-Man.Engineer Bob with Creech in Bob Burn's placeWhat is it about the Creature that makes him so appealing? Certainly he has a fantastic look. His design was ahead of his time, and so has become a classic. Your Planet 8 crew discusses that amazing suit, and some differences in the design for the water scenes versus land. There's been a lot of awareness of Millicent Patrick's role in designing the Creature lately, and we touch on that, as well as the work of Jack Kevan, Chris Mueller, and Bud Westmore. And of course, the men who wore the suit on land and underwater, Ben Chapman and Ricou Browning, must be recognized. We'll take a look at each of the films (Creature from the Black Lagoon, Revenge of the Creature , The Creature Walks Among Us), and which is our favorite -and you might be surprised! And what would a fourth Creature film have been like? It's hard to discuss the Creature without talking about his desire for human ladies -of course in the first film, it was Julie Adams, and the sequence with the Creature swimming below her has become iconic. This leads into a discussion of Shape of Water...We all have our Creature Collectibles -Bob has a whole basement devoted to the Creature. His favorite Creature item though, is his Bally pinball machine. Karen's favorite (which she's mentioned many times before) is the Sideshow premium format figure of the Creature swimming. Last but not least, Larry's favorite is his Anchor Hocking Creature glass. Bob's Creature basementKaren's Creech bustAll this, and so much more! It's a Creature-palooza this time on Planet 8!For our Sensor Sweep, Karen shares an appropriate item: a wonderful book called The Creature Chronicles, by Tom Weaver, friend of the show David Schecter, and Steve Kronenberg. It's from McFarland Books, and you can order it from McFarland or Amazon. It has a wealth of info on the Creature, including overviews and inside info on each film, but also background on the music, other underwater monster films, and the Creature films that were never made. It would be a great addition to anyone's library. That's it for us! Our show this month has two in-depth interviews, one about a book, and one about a documentary, about two classic summer movies, specific to the world of special effects makeup. The book is entitled The Lady From The Black Lagoon and was written by Mallory O'Meara. It tells the story of Millicent Patrick. Millicent worked in the Universal Studios makeup department in the early 1950s. One of the things that Millicent was responsible for was the design of none other than the Creature From The Black Lagoon. We also have Hollywood makeup legend Thom Burman and William Conlin who are here to talk about their new documentary Making Apes. The movie tells the story of how makeup artist John Chambers, and his apprentice (Thom Burman) revolutionized special effects makeup, and did it in only a couple of months. It's also the story of John Chambers, who, if you saw the film Argo, was the man played by John Goodman. Oh yeah, I forgot, the whole time he did this, he was also secretly working for the CIA. https://DanaGould.com

Horror movies are major box office. Some experts see the film “The Creature from the Black Lagoon” as a turning point. One reason is the Gill Man character, created by an often overlooked female trailblazer in monster design, Millicent Patrick. This episode we have an amazing guest re-joining us, the fantastic Shaun from Comics2Movies and XCT. So you know straight up it is going to be a great show! Also the DJ is on fire this week and makes us laugh till we cry. We begin with a look at an upcoming book release that is the biography of Milicent Patrick, the lady who designed the creature from the Black Lagoon. She has an amazing story that is sure to inspire many of us. It also looks at the harassment she faced and the ongoing issues in Hollywood today. Also discussed is the reaction of various law enforcement agencies in response to undesirable behaviours such as cyber-bullying. The topic is the 40th anniversary of Mad Max! That’s right the original movie that created a legend is 40 years old. There was a party in Victoria to celebrate with fans even coming from America. Of course this means we have to discuss the amazing films in the Mad Max franchise (even the recent Fury Road – which is suggested is not Mad Max, but you decide and let us know). Also this is when the DJ makes us laugh till we cry, listen out for it, believe me, it is amazingly funny. Next up is the Professor with some information about the PS5 and VR. Things are getting better with improved technology on the VR/AR front with arcades opening up around the place, but what is happening in the home? We then have the regular shoutouts, birthdays, and remembrances. Concluding with a chat about what Shaun is up to in terms of new projects to look forward to, so if you are planning on going to any of the comic conventions you will have to stop by and say G’Day, and check out what he has on offer. Particularly with his new graphic novels, so go along and check out his website and be amazed by the wondrous collection of artwork in the various comic books and graphic novels available for purchase alongside the extensive offering of various memorabilia there.
