The conversation also touches on the limitations of diagnostic labels and the importance of focusing on wellness and prevention in mental health. Dr. Tedeschi describes the work of Boulder Crest Foundation, which provides programs for veterans and first responders to promote post-traumatic growth. The conversation explores the challenges faced by veterans transitioning back to civilian life and the importance of post-traumatic growth. It emphasizes the need for connection, purpose, and belonging, and the difficulty of navigating a new way of being after leaving the military. The use of peer support and group work is discussed as a powerful tool for healing and growth. The scalability of mental health services and the role of psychiatric medications are also touched upon.TakeawaysPost-traumatic growth is the ability to turn traumatic experiences into something positive and transformative. The concept of post-traumatic growth has been written about and experienced throughout history, but it is not widely recognized in the field of mental health.Diagnostic labels in mental health focus on problems and disorders, but there is more to people's lives than just these labels. There is a shift towards focusing on wellness and prevention in mental health.Boulder Crest Foundation provides programs for veterans and first responders to promote post-traumatic growth. Transitioning back to civilian life can be challenging for veterans, as they have to navigate a new way of being and confront old issues that may not have been resolved before entering the military.Connection, purpose, and belonging are essential for veterans to feel fulfilled and satisfied in their post-military lives.Understanding one's personal narrative and using it to define a new mission is crucial for post-traumatic growth.Peer support and group work can be powerful tools for healing and growth, as they provide a sense of universality and momentum.Scalability is a significant challenge in mental health services, and a peer-centered approach can help meet the tremendous mental health needs in the country.Psychiatric medications can be helpful for some individuals, but overprescription may occur due to the lack of resources and the avoidance of addressing underlying issues.Chapters00:00 Introduction to Post-Traumatic Growth01:36 The Limitations of Diagnostic Labels03:26 Dr. Tedeschi's Journey into Studying Post-Traumatic Growth06:25 Defining Wisdom in Psychology09:39 Working with Veterans11:06 Challenges Faced by Veterans14:09 The Impact of Troubled Homes on Veterans15:08 The Difficulty of Leaving the Military18:07 Introduction to Post-Traumatic Growth20:29 Shifting Mental Health Focus26:35 The Importance of Understanding Psychological Systems29:19 Exploring Personal Narratives and Trauma33:38 The Power of Disclosure and Emotional Work50:37 Peer Support and Mental Health01:01:12 Psychiatric Medications and Mental Health TreatmentLinks:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BoulderCrestFoundation/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bouldercrestfoundation/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@BoulderCrestFoundationLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/bouldercrestfoundation/Website: https://bouldercrest.org/

Christy, a Navy veteran, has spent the last decade helping people build strong, healthy bodies through coaching and fitness. She is passionate about personal development and mentorship. Christy has spoken at Microsoft, Real Coaches Summit, and the Nutrition Coaching Institute, and hosts the Fitme Coffee Talk Podcast. She will share her journey from the Navy to becoming a fitness coach and entrepreneur, discussing the impact of military programming on relationships and the importance of being present with emotions. Before we dive in, we have a new cohort of veterans starting The Mission After mentorship program. Head over to themissionafter.org to join the waitlist and join us this July for a 90 day program that will help you establish a solid foundation for your identity, relationships, and of course discover your next mission and execute.SummaryChristy shares her journey from the Navy to becoming a fitness coach and entrepreneur. She discusses the impact of programming received in the military and how it affected her relationships and emotional well-being. She explores the balance between the masculine and feminine energies and the importance of being present with emotions. Christy also highlights the need for resilience and the ability to feel and transform emotions in a healthy way. The conversation explores the concepts of the feminine and masculine energies and their roles in our lives. The feminine is associated with matter, intuition, flow, and being present in the moment, while the masculine is associated with pattern, structure, vision, and future-oriented thinking. Both energies are important and should be balanced for progress and fulfillment. The conversation also touches on the importance of creativity, intuition, and play in personal growth and business success. The use of heart medicine and the exploration of the feminine have led to shifts in perspective and a deeper connection with oneself and others. In this final part of the conversation, Mike and Christy discuss the idea of feeling more and how entheogenic and psychedelic medicine can help confront and move through emotions. They also talk about their experiences with alcohol and how their perspectives on drinking have changed over time. They touch on the normalization of certain behaviors in the military and the impact of cultural differences when traveling. They also draw parallels between their experiences in jiu-jitsu and the importance of finding ease and flow in movement.TakeawaysThe programming received in the military can impact relationships and emotional well-being.Coping mechanisms developed in the military may not serve well in civilian life.True emotional resilience involves being present with emotions and transforming them in a healthy way.Exploring and embracing the feminine energy can lead to a more balanced and fulfilling life.Finding a balance between the masculine and feminine energies is important for personal growth and relationships. Both the feminine and masculine energies are important and should be balanced for progress and fulfillment.Creativity, intuition, and play are essential for personal growth and business success.Heart medicine and exploring the feminine can lead to shifts in perspective and a deeper connection with oneself and others. Entheogenic and psychedelic medicine can create scenarios where you confront and move through emotions in a space where you can handle it and even enjoy it.Alcohol can be used as a way to numb emotions, but entheogenic medicine can help you confront and move through the issues that you were trying to avoid. The military can normalize certain behaviors, such as heavy drinking, but it's important to recognize the impact of these behaviors and how they may affect your well-being.Traveling to different countries can provide opportunities to reflect on cultural differences and gain a deeper understanding of the human experience. In jiu-jitsu, there is a balance between strength and ease, and learning to move with ease and flow can be more effective than using force.Chapters00:00 Introduction and Background08:28 The Impact of Military Programming23:40 Embracing Emotional Resilience30:26 Exploring the Balance Between Masculine and Feminine Energies35:19 Finding Balance for Personal Growth and Fulfillment43:55 The Importance of Creativity and Intuition56:51 The Shifts and Connections Through Heart Medicine01:06:50 Confronting and Moving Through Emotions01:09:02 The Impact of Cultural Differences and Normalization01:11:14 Reflections on Traveling and Cultural Differences01:26:12 Finding Ease and Flow in Jiu-Jitsu and MovementLinks:Website: https://www.fitmemetabolism.com/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/fitmechristyInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/christymaecampbell/

This week I sat down with former Marine Corps Officer, Combat Veteran, and the current founder of Movement Rx (MRx), Dr. Theresa Larson. Dr. Larson has set and achieved some hefty goals throughout her life to include becoming a professional softball player, winning the Body-for-Life Championship, and becoming an entrepreneur when she and her husband founded MRx in 2013. Dr. Larson is also an advocate for the Challenged Athletes Foundation's military and 1st responder division, Operation Rebound, and is on the Advisory Board for The Mission After, a non-profit focused on delivering digital health and wellness solutions to veterans across the globe. Dr. Larson and I discuss the connection between mind and body and how mindfulness has changed her perspective on what true wellness and fitness looks like. Dr. Larson was very forthcoming when discussing some of the challenges she's faced along her journey, to include her experience with an eating disorder and the loss of her mother at an early age. I really enjoyed my conversation with Dr. Larson and hope you get from it as much as I did. Check out the below links to find out more about Dr. Larson and MRx. Devoted to Mission “After this, the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to go. And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. Go your way; behold, I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. Carry no moneybag, no knapsack, no sandals, and greet no one on the road.” – Luke 10:1-4 (ESV) We are the sent people of God “Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house!' And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him. But if not, it will return to you. And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the laborer deserves his wages. Do not go from house to house. Whenever you enter a town and they receive you, eat what is set before you.” – Luke 10:5-8 ESV We learn to identify people of peace “Heal the sick in it and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.' But whenever you enter a town and they do not receive you, go into its streets and say, ‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you. Nevertheless know this, that the kingdom of God has come near.' I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.” – Luke 10:9-12 ESVWe tell people “The Kingdom of God has come near” Devoted to Mission is to declare that the Kingdom of God has come near B.L.E.S.S. Feel like you're working your tail off and aren't getting results? We all know that consistency is the key to getting results yet most people struggle with consistency. That's why I am inviting you to take on The 40 Day Transformation Challenge! Here's how it works: 1. Write out an abbreviated version of your dream every day, 2 times/day (morning & evening) for 40 consecutive days. Keep track of your days! (i.e. "Day 1" at the top of the page. 2. Speak it in the present tense with as much clarity as possible, start with "I am so happy and grateful now that..." and end with "...this or something better." 3. If you skip a day OR time in the day, restart the challenge. In this lesson, I am going to go into detail on all of these points but this is the framework you will work with. TIP: If you don't have any clue what you would want to write as a vision for yourself, check out my FREE workshop at https://www.jamesallencoaching.com/workshop it will help. Like this lesson? Lifecasting (Art) Lifecasting is the process of creating a three-dimensional copy of a living human body, through the use of molding and casting techniques. In rare cases lifecasting is also practiced on living animals. The most common lifecasts are of torsoes, pregnant bellies, hands, faces, and gentalia and it is possible for an experienced lifecasting practitioner to copy any part of the body. Lifecasting is usually limited to a section of the body at a time, but full-body lifecasts are achievable too. Compared with other three-dimensional representations of humans, the standout feature of lifecasts is their high level of realism and detail. Listen as he and I discuss the power of going through hard times in order to get enjoy the abundance on the other side. Mindset: Something shifts within your mindset when your back is against the wall and you have nothing to lose. Brian shares that sense of "desperado" as he calls it.
