This episode is the last of a three-part update on Appalachian Mysteria Season 1 — Mared & Karen: The WVU Coed Murders. Without a doubt, these three episodes will be the most important updates since the season finished airing in 2018. In this episode, Devona Coffey — formerly Devona Daft — finds out about the existence of Geoff and Sarah's book, and one paragraph in particular makes her blood boil. The passage leads to an emotional confrontation in the holler, and eventually to Devona contacting the Mysteria crew to share a long-buried family secret. The terminally ill aunt who took care of Devona after her father's death confides in her about the night Mared & Karen went missing, and a growing chorus of voices in the family echo the story. But is it all true, or a story contrived to create a dangerous mystique around career criminals? The WVU Coed Murders: Who Killed Mared & Karen? — Geoff & Sarah's book, now available at Amazon. The book goes into much greater detail about the entire case than the podcast could allow for, and is the first mention of the Dafts. (Chapter 15) Thank you to our sponsor Ritual! Sārnate bija pirmā neolīta apmetne Latvijā, kurā atrada lielāku skaitu koka priekšmetu - vienkoča laivas fragmentu, airus, lokus, šķēpus, tīklu, pludiņus no priežu mizas, zušu duršanas ierīces un skalu murdus.” Tā apjomīgajā izdevumā "Latvijas arheoloģijas rokasgrāmata" raksta LU Latvijas vēstures institūta vadošās pētniece Ilga Zagorska. Viņa arī stāsta par senajiem zvejas rīkiem. Interesants ir fakts, ka gan vidējā gan vēlajā akmens laikmetā ar zivju ķeršanu nodarbojās gan vīrieši, gan sievietes. Par to liecina apbedījumos atrastie makšķerāķi, kas bija ievietoti kapā līdzās sievietei.

It's no secret that healthcare billing is incredibly complicated. Anesthesia has its own system for tracking units of care provided and assigning costs for care. So, how does the flow of money through the healthcare system work? And how can we unravel the tangled web of payment for anesthesia services? In this episode, we have a republished conversation I had with Devona Slater, an expert in anesthesia billing and coding, where she shares her unparalleled advice to equip you for future practice management success. I wanted DeVona to join me on my podcast, because I'm inspired by her story and wisdom. She grew up in a segregated city, experienced intense racism in high school, worked extremely hard to achieve her dreams, and now uses her platform to do a lot of good. DeVona's voice is full of wisdom. We talked about career, race, success, caretaking for a parent, and much more.

Devona, Rana and DeAndra take on popular (unpopular?) culture as only the Three Sisters can. From Rana's daughter's clarity over the first Black Disney Princess' true identity, to the importance of research that these sisters have practiced to survive white culture, our sisters find a way to deepen the conversation around every single aspect of how we connect with one another. And how we don't. As always, the Beard sisters are loving, humorous, deep and real. *** We are taking a pause to let the complexities of the past year settle a bit. In this episode we unravel the tangled web of payment for anesthesia services. It's no secret that healthcare billing is incredibly complicated, and anesthesia has its own system for tracking units of care provided, and assigning cost for care. We explore components that overlap with the surgical realm (CPT codes) as well as ASA units that are anesthesia-specific. The Three Sisters return to catch up with each other and us after a rocky start to the year. Our nation lost (revealed?) its footing, the pandemic continues to take lives, and the long journey Black humans have endured to MATTER in private and in public took a toll on many, including the Beard family bond itself. Hear how Devona, Rana and DeAndra have engaged in a process of strengthening their individual sense of agency in order to fortify their familial ties. We thank Sylvia High for her work with Aiming High. All of this unfolds with tenderness, laughter and love. In short, the Three Sisters are back! Finally, at the beginning of the episode you hear from Kara Pierson, our Wellspring Fellow, about a healing program for Black women this month.
Devona Williams Ph.D. - President/CEO, Goeins-Williams Associates, Inc. Performance Management Consultant, Facilitator, Author, Speaker “I've been thrown out of my own office, including my stint in the White House where I had an office. I was told to come out from behind the desk—that I didn't belong there.” Devona gave many examples of the challenges of being a woman of color, and a businesswoman of color in America, but podcast notes simply do not convey it properly--you'll have to listen for yourself and I implore you to do so. She is a highly educated, experienced, successful businesswoman who specializes in solving problems regarding performance and inclusion. She's been in business for 31 years and even had an office in the White House for a while. This was a particularly moving and enlightening episode for me as an interviewer. I can't imagine anyone not being impressed with this woman. I know I was. PODCAST SUMMARY Devona wanted to be in business since she was 8 years old She has been a performance consultant for 31 years Her company is Goeins-Williams. They work on the human aspects and challenges of organizations. She evaluates the work environment to uncover the source of the problem(s) Her company's mantra: People- Profits- Performance She works within the corporate, medical industry and government sectors Much of her work lately revolves around inclusion and diversity At time marker 16:00, we talked about being a black businesswoman and why that has its own set of challenges and expectations, and then a little later on-- Dr. Devona went on to explain, so very eloquently that whenever a person violates the social expectations of where that person belongs, or where they should be, that's when there's a problem. It's usually by people who have had little experience with that particular group, or they make assumptions about their intelligence or their abilities or whether or not they're appropriate for, or a good fit for that particular job or thing. She gave examples of how she was told that she “wasn't appropriate for the job” just because she was black. She has been thrown out of her own office in the White House because someone assumed she didn't belong there because of her skin color. She gave other examples of non-business bigotry such as, Not being able to flag a cab in Boston. In her own house, she has answered the door and been asked to get the “lady of the house.” She readily admits to “Driving while black.” [sarcasm intended] Bigotry is systemic in our culture Note from Rob: She went on to give more examples, but podcast notes simply do not convey it properly--you'll have to listen for yourself and I implore you to do so. Her parents gave her tools to deal with the bigotry. Unconscious and conscience bias is very prevalent and is very much in place. There is a “caste system” in this country. The darker the skin color, the more discrimination they face. We discussed whether the Black Lives Matter movement was changing things or was just the cause of the day? On a more hopeful note, she feels strongly that the new generation has a very different attitude towards race and gender and that things are improving. We talked about her book, The Intentional Consultant and what's involved to grow and sustain a business, which is what her book is about. I asked her, “What was the biggest lesson you've learned?” “Never hire the wife of a client.” Her final thought: Be kind and loving to one another. In this episode, the Beard sisters continue their reflection on moments of profound and overwhelming fear in each of their lives: the premature birth of Devona’s daughter Zora, the near-death experience of Rana’s husband Julian, and when DeAndra went from the sanctuary of church into an unexplained coma. As always, prayer, faith and powerful images and messages orchestrate the way the sisters and their families heal, survive and thrive despite extraordinary circumstances. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
The visual artist Titus Kaphar was asked at a talk in Cincinnati how long his work had been political. He told the audience that for some people -- people like him -- the work is always viewed as political. Recorded two days after the 2020 presidential election and two days before the race was called for Biden, the Beard sisters took a break from refreshing their news feeds to speak of this same idea and many riveting others in Episode 2 of Three Sisters. Even without direct conversations about race and politics in the Beard household, the young sisters were inspired by dogeared books including The Autobiography of Malcolm X, Kaffir Boy, Native Son, Invisible Man and Her Eyes Were Watching God (get these titles and more at DeAndra's Beyond Barcode Bookstore!) These books were often being read simultaneously, one sister waiting to pick up the book the second another put it down. When sister Devona began to eschew hair straighteners, it was clear to the younger sisters that an act of bravery was happening, even if they didn't have the words to explain it as anti-racist representation. The sisters also talk about the challenges of parenting and the need for new rituals -- ones that take rituals of oppression and turn them on their head. As always, the conversation is deeply personal and beautifully, tenderly universal. *** We would love to hear from you! We've added a comment section on our Three Sisters page at The Well. Three Sisters. There's the Chekhov play, where three sisters ponder purpose, change and the meaning of life. There are the three Native American crops, squash, beans and corn. When planted together, they are thought to create sacred significance to sustain life. There are the three sisters rock formations in the Blue Mountains of Australia and the volcanic peaks in Oregon. And now we meet the Beard sisters from Kokomo, Indiana: Devona, the maternal eldest, Rana, the rebel, and DeAndra the baby girl. All of the sisters attended HBCU's before finding their own path in equity and social healing via medicine (Devona), policy and poetry (Rana), and in social enterprise (DeAndra). In this episode, we meet the sisters and begin to learn about the family dynamic that sowed the deep seeds of love that keep the sisters, and now us, grounded in what really matters. *** Three Sisters is a production of TheWell.World. Thanks to the producing team of Rowe Schnure, Claire Autran, Brian Raphael Nabors and most of all, the Beard sisters. We would also like to thank the On Being Project. It was at an On Being gathering where The Well Founder Stacy Sims first met Rana Dotson. The promise was that we leave feeling nourished, emboldened and accompanied. Later, in partnership with On Being, The Well hosted Mindful Poetry virtual gatherings where we first heard Rana and DeAndra's unique and powerful voices. To all organizations and individuals who hold space for people to come together to nourish, embolden and accompany each other, know that you too are sowing deep seeds of love. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

ONCE UPON A GENE - EPISODE 034 The Ladies Behind the Edits I want my audience to know Erica and Devona, such a big part of my show. They make everything sound beautiful, put it all together and I'm grateful to have stumbled across them. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS What is it like to hear and to edit someone's conversations in their raw form? It's vulnerable to put something out that's personal and not the finished product. I have a personal relationship with everyone I work with that happens very organically over time. There's a lot of trust that goes into that. It helps that we enjoy listening to your podcast. If you're trying to edit something you have no interest in whatsoever, it makes our job a little harder. It's a major plus that your podcast happens to be something that we live daily and are interested in learning from you and your guests. The content is personal and relatable for us and there's value in it for us. Aside from the backend support is that we fall within your audience. I posted in a Facebook group about wanting an editor connected to the rare disease or disability community and Erica shared with me about Cam. Can you share a little bit about him? We're integrated in this community through my baby brother who is 27. He was born in the early 90's and diagnosed with what was then just referred to as mental retardation. He's a grab bag of these acronyms and present day he's on the spectrum, not high functioning, he has hygienic issues, behavioral issues, communication issues and social issues. He's a large part of our life and we see a lot of those same things in Cam. It's worrisome at times because my brother got to the intellectual age of 8 and just stopped. It's a fear for us as moms that we don't know and we don't have a sure diagnosis. Every time we see a specialist, they add something else and we don't know what the projection looks like for Cam. Have you thought about getting a genetic test for Cam? His most recent appointment was in December when he turned 4. She just wanted to take things slow. She said as long as he's physically healthy, we're working through his mobility issues through occupational therapy and he's happy and talkative- just let him be and let's see what happens. She didn't have a lot of advice because he's young and it's hard to diagnose things at his age. She wanted to monitor him and see how things go. We've never discussed getting a genetic test done on him. How did you feel when the doctor told you to wait and see what happens with Cam? When we first started seeing issues with Cam, Erica was deployed overseas and Cam was about a year and a half old. We were standing in the parking lot when Erica was getting ready to leave. There was a couple standing across from us with teenage kids and they clung to their Daddy and were crying their eyes out and I said to Erica that I was so glad Cam was so young and wouldn't remember this. That first night, Cam would not eat, he wouldn't sleep and he fussed all night long. His vocabulary at that age wasn't incredibly developed, but he'd say basic words like ball, milk, car and Mommy. There was no verbalization for the first 6 months after Erica left. Cam resorted to pointing at everything. I knew something was wrong but his pediatrician disregarded the change due to the fact that he was under stress and didn't know how to cope. By the time I put my foot down in 6 months, his regression was so harsh that it was full-on therapy from then on out. I'm not as concerned that the specialist now wants to wait it out because her reasoning is that she wants to talk about ADHD, but it's too early. Are you seeing more progression than regression now that Erica is back? Cam spent 13 months learning and not verbalizing because when Erica came home, he had a lot to say and he still has a lot to say. We've continued with therapy on an ongoing basis. Covid has made things difficult and we're not doing any tele-therapy at all because Cam doesn't have the attention span or tolerance to do it. We do behavioral therapy and occupational therapy and we've graduated from speech therapy. What was it like for you to see Cam's development when you came home Erica? About three months after I left, his school started questioning things and pointing out that something was going on with Cam. At that point, I was defensive and I thought he was just regressing and upset because I wasn't there and that everything would go back to normal when I got home. It was frustrating and scary and I was in denial that something was actually going on. All I could do was hope everything was going to be okay when I got home. On a daily basis, Devona would tell me something else going on with Cam and it was disheartening having to be away and unable to be there for my family. Did you feel pressure on your relationship when you realized Cam was having these issues? The pressure and stress we were already under from me being away when all this popped up and we just worked together and did what we had to do to get through it. When I came home, things were difficult. I came home from a year long deployment, was trying to reintegrate into society where I have to take care of myself and my family, feed myself, pay bills and things I didn't do for a year. That stress added to what we went through with Cam was difficult. Devona and I are pretty good about recognizing things before they get out of hand. Cam's challenges have not been marital challenges for us. It's been a rebuilding since deployment. There was a lot going on in life at that time. We;'re just enjoying life, we enjoy Cam, we have mutual passions and that's what keeps us bonded. Why did you make a career out of podcast support and what's behind your why? Effie, you have helped us to create our mission and we're doing what we're doing because you've inspired us to do so. We volunteer and like to get involved in things important to us, so as we tried to visualize what the business looked like and what it stands for, it became apparent that we wanted to work with people like you who are out doing the hard work, making waves, making people think and speaking to the people who aren't afraid to get out and make change happen. Par to liecina akmens laikmeta atradumi mūsu zemē.
#33 - Lisa DeVona works hard at everything she does. Her running is proof at the extra effort she puts in. She ran Badwater 135 this year, one of the most difficult ultra-races there is and placed third. She is a personal trainer and mother and dedicated to doing things with 100% effort. It was a pleasure and so motivating to speak with her. I hope you feel this way as well.
