Blue October's Matt Noveskey | 20 Years of Foiled, 1.5 Billion Streams & a Full-Circle JourneySome interviews are about meeting someone for the first time. This one is about reconnecting with a story that has been part of mine for more than 25 years.I first saw Blue October at Rock Fest 2000 in Omaha, Nebraska—a legendary lineup featuring 311, Stone Temple Pilots, Incubus, Papa Roach, Nickelback and more. Months later, I opened for Blue October at the Ranch Bowl and eventually several more times, including at the Music Box. There was even a day spent hanging out at Fun-Plex before one of their Omaha shows. Then, in 2006, Justin Furstenfeld unexpectedly showed up at my band's show at Knickerbockers in Lincoln. He loved our set, gave us Blue October's manager's number, and asked if we wanted to tour. That opportunity ultimately became one of the moments that changed the trajectory of my band.Years later, I found myself working security when Blue October returned to Lincoln. Now, more than 25 years after I first saw the band, I sit down with bassist Matt Noveskey. We talk about Blue October's early days, the road to Foiled, the explosive success of “Hate Me” and “Into the Ocean,” the challenges that came with that success, and what has allowed the band to remain creatively relevant nearly three decades later. We also dive into the 20th anniversary of Foiled, the album's lasting impact, Blue October's connection with generations of fans, and the incredible milestone of their catalog surpassing 1.5 billion streams. For me, this conversation is more than an interview. It's a full-circle moment with a band whose story has intersected with mine in ways I never could have predicted back in 2000.Listen. Watch. Subscribe. What was supposed to be a conversation about the Grateful Dead quickly becomes something else entirely when photographer Jay Blakesberg and singer-songwriter Steve Poltz join us at High Sierra. The two give us a preview of Working Man's Dead, their wonderfully unpredictable live collaboration combining Jay's iconic Grateful Dead photography and storytelling with Steve's music — including songs he writes spontaneously in response to stories and images he hasn't seen coming. They talk about Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh and the strange magic of improvisation. Jay also recounts watching an all-white-clad Steve Poltz make his way toward the rail at the Sphere as the crowd seemingly parted for him “like Moses” — leading Jay to describe Steve as “a cross between Bob Dylan and Moses.”And then things go completely off the rails.Charlton Heston. Planet of the Apes. Paper routes. Behind the Green Door. A mysterious bag of vintage magazines. And several moments when we completely lose control of our own interview.Underneath the insanity, though, is a friendship between two gifted storytellers and a shared love of the Grateful Dead, spontaneity and the kind of live experience that can never happen exactly the same way twice. This is Steve Poltz and Jay Blakesberg — unfiltered, unscripted and very much Only in the Green Room.Steve Poltz, Jay Blakesberg, Grateful Dead, Grateful Dead stories, Bob Weir, Jerry Garcia, Workingman's Dead, Grateful Dead photography, High Sierra Music Festival, Only in the Green Room

Carter Reeves joins Caught on the Mike for a conversation about the evolution of Surfer Girl, his journey from Aer frontman to building a band with a sound that blends reggae, surf-rock, indie-pop and hip-hop into something distinctly its own. With Surfer Girl's new album Midnight arriving August 21, Carter talks about the creative evolution behind the record, the road from Sunrise and Noon through Sunset, and the growing global community that has developed around the band. We also get into “Smoked Out,” the new Surfer Girl single featuring Wiz Khalifa, Carter's connection to hip-hop, the inspiration behind several of Midnight's singles, and the balance between nostalgia, reflection and carefree energy that runs through the music.Carter also shares insight into Surfer Girl's reputation as a live band, performing at festivals including Tortuga, BeachLife and Warped Tour, and the difference between making music for headphones and creating an experience in front of a crowd. From his early success with Aer to finding a new creative identity with Surfer Girl, this is a conversation about musical freedom, growth, reinvention and building something that feels authentic.www.caughtonthemike.comcaughtonthemike@gmail.com

Just moments after closing Opening Night of the 2026 Harmony in the Woods concert season, Meghan Parnell and Dave Barnes of Bywater Call returned to the stage, not for an encore, but for a honest conversation with HarmonyTALK host Greg Frigoletto. The result is an interview that feels every bit as genuine as the band's music.Over the past several years, the Toronto-based, seven-piece band has quietly become one of the most exciting live acts on the international roots music scene. Blending Southern soul, blues, roots rock, and powerful horn arrangements, Bywater Call delivers performances that are both emotionally charged and musically fearless. At the center is Meghan Parnell's commanding voice, complemented by Dave Barnes' expressive guitar work and the remarkable chemistry of a band that has spent years earning every fan one performance at a time.Their music refuses to be confined to a single genre.Influenced by artists including The Band, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Otis Redding, Little Feat, Sly and the Family Stone, and The Wood Brothers, Bywater Call moves effortlessly from deeply personal ballads to high-energy anthems that showcase the full strength of the seven-piece ensemble. Every song reflects the highs and lows of life, exploring love, loss, resilience, hope, and everything in between. That authenticity has earned the band growing international recognition. Following extensive touring throughout Europe, Bywater Call was nominated for the 2025 UK Blues Award for International Blues Artist of the Year. This year, the band once again landed among the Top 20 finalists alongside many of the biggest names in contemporary blues. In this episode, Meghan and Dave reflect on how the band found its sound, what keeps seven musicians connected through thousands of miles on the road, and why live performance continues to shape everything they create.Recorded immediately after their Harmony in the Woods performance, this conversation captures something listeners rarely hear: artists reflecting on a show while the music is still echoing in the air.If this conversation inspires you to experience live music under the trees, the Harmony in the Woods summer concert season continues through Sept. 5 with an outstanding lineup of nationally touring artists spanning blues, Americana, folk, jazz, bluegrass, Celtic, world music, and more. Visit HarmonyInTheWoods.org for the complete schedule and tickets.

Alejandro Aranda—also known as Scarypoolparty—joins Caught on the Mike for a wide-ranging conversation about his musical journey, his creative process, and the release of his new EP, Baroque. After captivating audiences as the runner-up on American Idol in 2019, Alejandro has continued to chart his own artistic path, releasing acclaimed projects including Exit Form, Doom Hologram, The Act of Forgiveness, and now Baroque. Rather than following trends, he's built a reputation for blending classical, jazz, indie rock, electronic music, pop, and drum & bass into a sound that's entirely his own.In this episode, Alejandro discusses the inspiration behind Baroque, how the project reflects both his musical influences and personal evolution, and why he continues to challenge himself creatively with every release. We revisit his American Idol experience, explore his distinctive fingerstyle guitar technique, and talk about songwriting, artistic independence, and the freedom that comes from creating music without being confined by expectations or genre labels.Whether you've followed Alejandro since his American Idol days or recently discovered his work as Scarypoolparty, this conversation offers an insightful look at one of today's most inventive singer-songwriters and multi-instrumentalists, as well as the mindset that continues to shape his evolving career.www.caughtonthemike.comcaughtonthemike@gmail.com

his week, I'm joined by Tonino Baliardo, the legendary guitarist, composer, and founding member of the Gipsy Kings, for a conversation celebrating more than four decades of unforgettable music. Tonino discusses the inspiration behind Historia, the latest album from Gipsy Kings featuring Tonino Baliardo, and how it reflects the band's remarkable musical journey while honoring the sound and traditions that made them a global phenomenon. We also talk about Gipsy Kings featuring Tonino Baliardo, the new documentary directed by Joel Van der Molen, which takes viewers behind the music to tell the incredible story of the band's rise from busking on the beaches of Saint-Tropez to becoming one of the world's most successful and influential world music acts. In our conversation, Tonino also shares what it's like creating and performing alongside his family, why passing the music on to the next generation is so important, and how that family bond continues to shape the future of the Gipsy Kings' legacy. Whether you've loved classics like "Bamboléo," "Djobi Djoba," and "Volare" for years or are discovering their music through Historia, this is an inspiring conversation about family, tradition, perseverance, and a lifetime dedicated to music that transcends borders. Special Thanks to Heather Hawke from Reybee Inc for setting up the interview and Matthew Parker for his translation services.  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Backstage at the New Orleans Jazz Museum during French Quarter Fest, we caught up with Cyril Neville, his son Omari Neville, guitarist Jake Eckert, and his son River — the teenage keyboard player who rounded out the lineup of the Legacy Coalition, a band built entirely from the sons and daughters of New Orleans music royalty. The conversation moves through what it means to inherit a sound rather than learn it — from sleeping on drum risers at Tipitina's as a kid, to stepping onstage next to your own father and realizing the torch has already passed. Cyril talks about the "osmosis" of growing up around the music. Omari opens up about his debut album, out now with a release party at the Louisiana Music Factory. And the whole crew previews their upcoming set at High Sierra Music Festival.Only In The Green Room goes backstage with the artists carrying jam, funk, roots, and Americana music forward.

Michael Mullins (trombone) and Bradford Lewis (guitar) — two more members of the Legacy Coalition, and bandmates in their own project — join us to fill in the rest of the story. They walk us through how the Coalition really came together: an idea years in the making, a chance meeting at a recording session, and the moment a teenage keyboard player named River showed up and made the whole thing click. They talk about their new single "Brand New Day," a music video shoot funded in part by a Jazz and Heritage Foundation grant, and the weight — and the freedom — of carrying a family legacy forward. As Bradford puts it: "our job is not to fill their shoes, our job is to wear our own."Only In The Green Room goes backstage with the artists carrying jam, funk, roots, and Americana music forward.
