Brad Namdar, a former public school teacher, was a candidate in the recent CD-32 congressional primary race where education was a primary issue fueling his campaign. His experience started out like many other teacher-coaches seeking to combine his passion for education and his love for soccer. He grew up in North Texas where he showed promise as a competitive soccer and football player. He went to Texas Tech and at SMU he earned a degree in journalism and a minor in philosophy, as well as a masters degree.Brad went on to work for Dallas ISD and Dallas College (where I am running for the District 1 board seat.) School districts use our tax dollars to outsource lawyers to go up against employees and parents. Brad fell victim to the education behemoth. He could never have predicted what happened to him while he was an employee of Dallas ISD which resurfaced during his campaign. He filed a grievance in 2015 after booster club donations went missing which turned into a bureaucratic nightmare. Bogus charges were then brought against Brad despite the fact that he was exonerated and reinstated as a teacher. Brad left Dallas ISD to work for Dallas College as a boys and girls soccer coach at Mountain View College. He was faced with new bureaucratic roadblocks impeding his ability to serve the academic and athletic needs of his students. The dropout rate of students and athletes was exacerbated by the bloated administration. During his recent campaign emerged as the frontrunner in the 6-person race before he was ambushed 5 days before early voting with a Dallas Morning News story by Lauren McGaughy. The false??? and unsubstantiated??? accusations left a devastating impact on Brad and his wife. When you stand up to the establishment and stand in the gap, the bullets fly. Brad is a fearless champion for kids and paid dearly for his willingness to speak truth to power. Social Impact Podcast is on Spotify! My guest in this episode is Sanaz Namdar who was born in Tehran in 1979. She rightly points out that 1979 was a great year for music but, if you lived in Iran, it was also the year the music died due to the Iranian Revolution. Sanaz grew up in a world where music was not just difficult to get hold of but was actually illegal. Just as Covid has made me realise how many things I take for granted Sanaz's story made me reflect on what a gift it is to have, as we do today, access to all the music in the world with a single click. In 1998 Sanaz moved from a world of illicit tapes and secret satellite dishes to spending long afternoons in Tower Records in Seattle catching up on a lot of the great rock classics. As well as a set of interesting song choices for each decade of her life Sanaz also shares her favourite Persian song. For me there are clear connections to several of her song choices and it’s a magic moment that shows how universal a language music is. I hope you enjoy Sanaz's story as much as I did . We covered a lot of musical ground in our chat and this Playlist of 41 songs has a song from every artist mentioned https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1XYjTOqLeUTDrOqL1M6WYW?si=YIKBlrfWQC62Oi4DsEXokA

In today’s extra special episode, we talk with a doctor in New York City who is helping his regular clients by night and helping COVID-19 patients by day. Dr. Namdar also gives some insight into his LGBT activism, what it was like growing up in Iran and Israel, and how he balances his busy professional with his full personal life.
Brad Namdar thinks big with a view of America that is heartwarming. patriotic and hinges precariously on wildly inaccurate nationalistic exceptionalism . Hey, that's not uncommon. Americans are world famous for ignoring that there are other countries at least twenty years ahead of us in all manner of problem solving and social/ economic progress but Brad is such a nice guy and means so well that we can overlook that and focus instead on his positive encouraging attitude and significant personal accomplishments, plus he does one of my favorite things - he lavishes praise and appreciation on others. That trait is so wonderful, and much missing from most American culture, that it earns Brad a pass for his inaccurate statements regarding American superiority about the internet and Wi-Fi when simple fact checking reveals that when it comes to Wi-Fi access and utilization, Estonia leaves the USA in the dust Another great thing about Brad Namdar is that he appreciates being corrected, so he won't be mad at me for telling him about Estonia:-) I'm sure Brad and I will have great fun together in Texas when I come to visit. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/burl-barer/support
It's not often that you get to talk about veganism, methane, writing, realtors, Smashing Pumpkins, manatees, tiny houses, and carnivorous plants in one sitting. Ruby Namdar’s The Ruined House received the Sapir Prize, Israel’s most prestigious literary award. Now newly translated into English, Namdar’s tale of a man whose comfortable secular life begins to unravel in the face of haunting religious visions cuts to the core of contemporary Jewish-American identity.
