Nathan was found adrift on a life raft several days later and was rescued. The circumstances surrounding the incident raised suspicions, leading to an investigation by authorities.Apart from the disappearance of his mother, there were also questions surrounding the unsolved murder of Nathan's grandfather, John Chakalos, in 2013. On September 13th, 2009, the lifeless body of Annie Le was found carelessly shoved in a wall in the basement of a Yale research building. In the first part of this split episode, Laura tells us about Annie's incredible but short life, the events that ended it, and how investigators tracked down the man responsible. Tragedy seemed to follow Nathan Carman. First, his grandfather was murdered, then his mother died in a tragic boating accident. Coincidence? In the second half of this episode, Marina explains the millions of reasons pointing to something more sinister than misfortune.
Money makes people do crazy things. But how many people could possibly be so money-hungry that they would kill their own grandfather and mother over a span of several years, in order to keep their bank account stocked? That is exactly what it is alleged Nathan Carman did. Nathan came from a very wealthy family and inherited half a million dollars after his grandfather was murdered, and shot to death in his own mansion. There was a suspicion that Nathan would be involved, though no one has ever been charged with the killing. Within a few short years, Nathan spent every penny he had in his account. Which is why the following events were incredibly suspicious. Nathan would be involved in a boating accident - where his boat sunk with his mother presumably on it and he was lost at sea for eight days before being rescued. With his mother presumed deceased, he stood to inherit 7 million dollars - that is, if he could convince a jury that he didn't fake a boating accident and kill her for money. Nathan would maintain his innocence - denying killing his grandfather or his mother. But he would not have his day in court. Just this past week, Nathan Carmas was found unresponsive in his prison cell and pronounced dead. Will we ever know the truth of what happened - and if Nathan would kill the two people closest to him, for millions of dollars? Early one morning in 2016, Nathan Carman and his mother went out on a fishing trip at sea. When something went wrong in the boat's engine compartment, Nathan inflated a life raft and abandoned ship, looking for his mother all the while. Soon after, law enforcement became suspicious of the situation, especially once they found out that in the case of his mother's death, Nathan would stand to inherit millions. This saga is one of New England's most interesting and heartbreaking cases. In 2013, a wealthy real estate developer John Chakalos was murdered in his Connecticut home. The last person to see him alive was his twenty-two year old grandson, Nathan Carman, The next morning Nathan either destroyed or disposed of his computer hard drive and his GPS unit, seemingly without explanation. Nathan, had also purchased a weapon that fired the same caliber ammunition, that killed his eighty-seven year old grandfather. Nathan refused to hand over the weapon, which he had just purchased four weeks prior. The police asked to charge Nathan with murder, but the D.A.'s office wanted more evidence. In 2016 Nathan claimed to have taken his mother fishing off the coast of R.I. Nathan was found seven days later, drifting in the Atlantic Ocean. His mother was no where to be found. He was indicted in his mom's murder this year. Please share this episode!Boston Globe https://bit.ly/3O6a0UBBoston.com https://bit.ly/3chw15s

ACTIVE CASE, PART 3: In October of 2016, about a month after he was plucked from a life raft after a week at sea, Nathan Carman walked into the private memorial service he'd organized to honor his mother, Linda Carman. Notably missing from the private service were Linda Carman's three sisters. It was publicly obvious that something wasn't right. The relationship between Nathan Carman and his aunts was not a good one. Soon it would be abundantly clear how and what the aunts thought about their nephew. They believed he was a murderer driven by greed for the family fortune. If you haven't already, begin with parts 1 and 2 of this story. This is part 3 of a three-part mini-series covering the ongoing cases of John Chakalos and Linda Carman. HR3 CONC: Employees win in SCOTUS Taco Bell case; Nathan Carman faces murder and fraud charges. by Frederick Penney
ACTIVE CASE, PART 2: Nathan Carman was 23-years old when his boat the Chicken Pox sank during a fishing trip off the coast of Rhode Island, presumably claiming the life of his mother, Linda Carman, who was also aboard the vessel before it went down. Nathan was rescued a week later – a miraculous recovery by a freight ship that just happened to be in the right place at the right time. The story only got more compelling when it was learned that Nathan Carman was the grandson of wealthy real estate developer John Chakalos, whose 2013 murder remained unsolved, and that Nathan himself was a suspect in his grandfather's death. In Part 2: Who is Nathan Carman? Did Nathan intentionally sink his boat with his mother aboard? If you haven't already, listen to Part 1: Murdered at Home and Missing at Sea available wherever you get your podcasts.
ACTIVE CASE: When the daughter of wealthy real estate developer John Chakalos walked into her father's Connecticut home one morning in December 2013, it set into motion a long-term investigation of not one, but two suspicious deaths in the same family within a three year span. Investigators had a prime suspect for the murder of John Chakalos from the beginning, but it wasn't until another member of the family disappeared under mysterious circumstances that the identity of that suspect was revealed. This is Part 1 of a deep dive into the cases of John Chakalos and Linda Carman. The cases of John Chakalos and Linda Carman are active and on-going with developments as recent as early May 2022. In the next episode of Dark Downeast I'll dive deep into court records and explore some major questions central to both investigations: Who is Nathan Carman? Is he responsible for the death of his grandfather? Did Nathan intentionally sink his boat with his mother aboard? And why?

On this Sunday's edition of News You Can Use on WTIC NewsTalk 1080 at 5:30a and 9:00a, host Ann Baldwin invites Dennis House, Chief Political Anchor for WTNH-TV News 8, to discuss the biggest stories in Connecticut at the moment. Over the past week, there has been a vicious news cycle. For those of you who do not know, two individuals (Richard Dabate and Nathan Carman) in separate cases, have been on trial for the past few years for the murder(s) of family members. As of Tuesday, May 10, 2022, both of these twisted individuals have been charged and will be sentenced later this year. Dennis not only provides details from the cases, but also walks us through how news teams and newsrooms prepare for breaking news stories and situations like these.
Linda Carman and her son, Nathan, set out on a night fishing trip. They don't return. A week later, Nathan Carman is found in an inflatable life raft, but his mother is nowhere to be found. Now police say Carman killed his mother and sank the boat intentionally for a $7,000,000 inheritance. Carman is accused of enlarging holes in the boat, "Chicken Pox," to ensue it sank. The boat's insurer National Liability and Fire Insurance Co., asked a court to deny any insurance claim on the boat following an investigation that revealed Nathan compromised it before the accident. The insurer's report states that in "removing his boat's trim tabs hours before departing on its final voyage, Carman not only failed to properly seal four thruhull holes he thereby opened at the transom's waterline, but two recent depositions establish Carman enlarged those four holes.” This is not the first time Carmen has been eyed for a murder of a family member: He was reportedly named a person of interest in the 2014 shooting death of his wealthy grandfather, John Chakalos. Warrants say that Carman was the last person to see his grandfather alive before the 87-year-old man was found shot to death in his Windsor, Connecticut, home. Nathan reportedly purchased a gun that was the same caliber as the weapon that killed his grandfather, a multimillionaire developer, and declined to let police know this during questioning. He also declined to take a polygraph test. Joining Nancy Grace Today: Andrew Norris - Maritime Attorney and Consultant, Tradewind Maritime Services Inc. Ashley walks Jess through the rumors circulating about Nathan Carman and his suspicious proximity to the deaths of his mother and his grandfather. While the legal battle is still ongoing, there is still a great deal to consider about what might have happened on these two fateful days in Nathan’s life. Was he merely in the wrong places at the wrong times, or could something more sinister be afoot? Perhaps time may tell.If you have story requests reach out to us at StudyingScarletPodcast@gmail.com-----------Our Links:Facebook link - StudyingScarletPodcastTwitter - StudyScarletPodInstagram - StudyingScarletPodcastTeepublic - StudyingScarlet

Sept. 17, 2016. Point Judith, R.I. Nathan Carman, 22, and his mother Linda, 54, left on his boat for a fishing trip. The two hadn't been getting along but they were known to fish together and maybe this was the opportunity for them to patch things up. A week later, a Chinese freighter discovered Nathan on a life raft and rescued him. Linda's sisters and local law enforcement suspected foul play. But this isn't the first time someone close to Nathan Carman had died under strange circumstances. His grandfather, Linda's dad, was murdered on December 20, 2013 with a rifle. With the grandfather's estate worth hundreds of millions of dollars there were potentially many suspects in the family as concerns over who would inherit how much was very much on their minds. But was Linda murdered? Her body has never been found and Nathan said that he would never have killed her or his grandfather. Join us as we look into a baffling true crime case that you won't forget.
