And I don't want to get trapped in a five-year plan.I try to focus on delivering value today helping people out, and improving my future self for tomorrow, and from there, opportunities naturally arise. So a lesson from this episode's guest really resonated with me – ‘be open to where your path takes you.'To hear the story behind that lesson, along with many more lesson-filled stories, I talked to Melinda Marchesi, Chief Marketing Officer, Prosper Marketplace (https://www.prosper.com/).Since its founding in 2005, Prosper Marketplace has originated $28 billion in loans for two million customers. For small law firm owners, the stakes are high in tough economic times. Here, we flesh out the impact that the current cost-of-living crisis is having on boutique practices across the country, how best to wade through this period, and why it's so important to speak with colleagues and knowledge-share. Host Jerome Doraisamy welcomes back Legalite managing principal Marianne Marchesi to discuss the impact of the current economic climate on small firms and their owners, how worried firm owners are right now about the cost-of-living crisis, and why it is so important to talk about one's situation and fears with fellow firm owners. Marchesi also discusses the need for longer-term strategies as a business owner, being both proactive and reactive with cost management, investing in the right external advisers to keep the firm afloat, and other practical approaches to ensure that your firm can not only keep its head above water but also continue to thrive in the modern marketplace. Welcome to Episode 1484 in which Marc Millon interviews Valentina Abbona of Cantine dei Marchesi di Barolo in today's episode of Wine, Food & Travel The winery is awarded the Best Red Wine 2023 Trophy, Barolo DOCG Sarmassa 2018 at the 5StarWines & Wine Without Walls wine selection in 2023. More about today's guest About today's guest: Valentina Abbona, 6th generation at Cantine dei Marchesi di Barolo together with her brother Davide, lives a passionate and profound relationship with wine, which for her is emotion, feeling, history, terroir and - above all - home. After attending to the Liceo Scientifico in Alba, she moved to Milan where she attended the Bocconi University, where she graduated in Business and Economics. During these years, her personal and professional training grew constantly thanks to various school-exchange programs, which took her from Manchester to Hyderabad (India) and then to New York. Her highly "international" career continues in Shanghai, where she worked for about a year for a niche high-profile consultancy firm. Meanwhile she was attending university, she also accompanied her mother Anna on her numerous business trips all around the world, which allowed her grasp the most diverse perspectives of the wine business and to exploit them in the perfect crossroads of tradition and innovation represented today by Marchesi di Barolo. Today, Valentina is one of the two female faces of Marchesi di Barolo, together with her mother Anna they carry on the dream of a great woman: Juliette Colbert de Maulévrier, descendant of the Minister of Finance of the Sun King and connoisseur of good wine. Having moved to the Marquis Carlo Tancredi Falletti's estate after her wedding, Juliette immediately sensed the potential of the grapes grown in Barolo: her vision and perception of our lands gave rise to what is now considered the king of wines and, not by chance, the wine of kings. Valentina Abonna talks about the generational family-owned and operated vineyard, Marchesi de Barolo. She shares the genesis of the Barolo wine (also known as the king of wines and wine of kings) that dates back to the 1600s, and is birthed from a love story when a young bride was brought to the village and decided that a quality wine was needed, long before the Piedmont region was recognized as a wine region. The family has owned the winery and vineyard since and still uses barrels that date back to the 1800s. Key points include: The difference between Barolos and barbarescos What makes Barolos unique Innovation and the future of the winery For more information on today's episode, and the wines you love to love, visit www.corkrules.com.

The Podcast is heading to Amarone, but the interview is in person! I sit down with Armando Fumanelli, the owner of Marchesi Fumanelli winery which can be found right in the heart of the Valpolicella Classico district of Northeast Italy. We discuss the art/science of making Amarone, the transition the winery went through after he took over and racing vintage cars.
Daniel catches up with Marianne Marchesi, Founder and Managing Principal of Legalite. Being unsatisfied with the business practices in law, Marianne went against the grain by starting Legalite, giving clients efficient, cost-friendly, and forward-thinking legal services, while building a culture that goes contrary to the industry. As a result, Marianne has created an award-winning law firm, going from 6 clients to now well over 500. As her journey has taken her from employee to business owner, to a leader and a mother, Marianne has had her fair share of highs and lows, and from them, she brings her insights and lessons about building what's different and doing the best for your people, to make something truly special.

This oral history interview is with Rudy Marchesi of Montinore Estate. Rudy talks about growing up with a family that was interested in wine, and then discovering grapegrowing and winemaking as an alternative to his graduate studies in Sonoma. From there he charts his journey to starting a small winery in New Jersey, to working in wine distribution, to Oregon and Montinore. He also talks about biodynamic farming and his efforts at raising awareness of the practice, as well as the changes in Oregon and what comes next for the state's wine industry. This interview was conducted by Rich Schmidt at Montinore Estate in Forest Grove on March 23, 2022.
Frederick Douglass was not only one of our greatest activists, he was a great writer, an artist who worked in words. Director Julie Marchesi (P.O.V., American Masters, African-American Lives) and producer Seun Babalola (NOVA, The United Shades of America, Africa Everywhere) explore the growth of his mind and the power of his words in their Emmy-nominated “Frederick Douglass: In Five Speeches.” Each speech is performed by one of the film's all-star cast (Nicole Beharie, Colman Domingo, Jonathan Majors, Denzel Whitaker, Jeffrey Wright) and André Holland provides a narrative spine by reading from Douglas' autobiographies. Inspired by David Blight's magisterial biography, the film is light on didacticism but shot-through with the inspiration that can only come from one born under slavery and freed by his own actions and words. “Frederick Douglass: In Five Speeches” is now streaming on HBO. Although much bigger, more well-known, and a bit fancier than the people I usually speak with, I wanted to make an exception and have the family who owns Marchesi di Barolo on the show so they could explain how the modern style of Barolo was created by the winery. It's much more buttoned up, and less of the normal conversation style I usually do, but it's an essential bit of history that will help fill-in some gaps about Barolo! Marchesi di Barolo in Barolo, photo from Marchesi di Barolo's Facebook page There are a lot of historic wineries and a lot of people in wine claim to have been the first to create a wine or a technique. But this week, the Cantina that invented Barolo as we know it today - Marchesi di Barolo joins. In the mid- to late- 1800s the Marchesi di Barolo focused on the production of dry, ageworthy, complex Nebbiolo was created from a wine that Thomas Jeffereson described as: “As silky as Madeira, as astringent as Bordeaux and as brisk as Champagne” Thankfully for those of us who love Barolo, the Marchesi had a different style in mind and created the wine as we know it today. The current owners, the Abbona family, purchased Marchesi di Barolo and today the 6th generation is taking over the winery. Valentina Abbona joins the show to talk about the history of Barolo as a wine, and her family's long history in owning this storied place and making bottles that remain top examples of the wine created here. Here are the notes: Valentina tells us about what it was like in Barolo in the late 1700s and early 1800s from a wine and lifestyle perspective – the polyculture that existed, and the simple, country lifestyle people led. Marchese Carlo Tancredi Falletti and his wife, Juliette, who was of French origin, figured out how to make Barolo a dry wine, consistently. Previously, as it sat in barrels that didn't have temperature control or were placed outdoors, the fermentation did not complete before the weather got cold. The yeast froze and sugar stayed in the wine. When the juice re-commenced fermentation, carbon dioxide stayed in the wine – thus why Thomas Jefferson compared it to Champagne. The Marquesa di Barolo - Giulia di Barolo, photo from the Wine Museum of Barolo We learn about how the Marchesa Giulia (who changed her name from Juliette to the Italian version of the name), specifically, found interest in the Nebbiolo vine and how she realized her vision for what Nebbiolo could be/the wines it could make of dry wines (using her knowledge of French wines and connections to people who could help). We discuss how the Marchesa used her contacts to the royal courts of Europe (Piedmont was under the Kingdom of Savoy of France at the time) to popularize the wine, even sending hundreds of barrels to the king in Torino to ensure he could drink the wine daily. We then turn to Valentina's family, the Abbonas, who have been making esteemed wine in Barolo since the late-1800s as well. When the opportunity to buy the Marchesi di Barolo occurred in 1929, Pietro Abbona, his brother, and his sisters bought the winery and began making small improvements. Davide, Valentina, Ernesto, Anna Abbona, photo from Marchesi di Barolo's Facebook page We discuss the Abbona's tradition of making single vineyard wines since 1973 and a bit about their three properties -- Cannubi, Coste di Rose, and Sarmassa. Valentina and I have a small debate about the MGA system, which smaller producers find challenging but that some bigger producers of the area, like Marchesi di Barolo, seem to like and find useful. Valentina talks about some of the other properties the Marchesi di Barolo owns in its 430 acre (186 ha) all over the Langhe and how they manage the land. After a brief conversation about how long Barolo can age (hint: forever!) we discuss climate change and the future of Barolo and Nebbiolo in light of the challenges the future may bring. Welcome to Episode 929; Travel in a Bottle, Virtual Tasting in the Time of Lockdown and Beyond Welcome to Wine2Wine Business Forum 2021 Series. The sessions are recorded and uploaded on Italian Wine Podcast. wine2wine is an international wine business forum, held annually in Verona Italy since 2014. The event is a key reference point for wine producers and a diverse variety of wine professionals eager to develop and grow their wine business worldwide. About today's session: As travel was not possible during the months of Lockdown, many involved in the world of wine found new ways to connect. The aim of this session is to look at the different ways people in wine have connected through virtual wine tastings during Lockdown and identify some of the benefits for various sectors: wine journalists and writers, wine educators, wine students, wine sellers, wine consumers. The ability to connect with producers, customers, educators, students at a time when travel has not been permitted has been vital for many businesses and it seems that the connections made through utilizing new media (Zoom, Microsoft Teams, etc) will be here to stay, even after life returns to ‘normal'. This presentation seeks to explore the benefits for the various sectors as well as some of the difficulties and downsides. To achieve this, Marc Millon surveyed about 50 people across the industry and will be analyzing the results. His hope is that the session will lead to a lively discussion as people attending relate their own experiences. It will be very interesting to hear your thoughts from the point of view of a wine producer.
