What if fighting in your relationship could actually bring you closer together? In this week's episode, we're continuing our seven-part series on relationship patterns that build strong couples. We dive into the fourth pattern that helps couples “make it”... Pattern 6: They fought. They got on each other's nerves, they fought, and were frustrated with each other at times. But they knew how to navigate conflict, bounce back, and move forward. (From Dr. Nicole LePera – @the.holistic.psychologist) Let's dive into the surprising truth that healthy conflict isn't about avoiding arguments but learning how to navigate them with grace. Based on insights from Dr. Nicole LaPera's research on lasting couples, we explore why couples who “make it” often have moments of frustration but use them to build resilience, deepen trust, and grow in faith together. Join us as we talk candidly about the reality of getting on each other's nerves and why it's normal—and even healthy. From sharing practical tips on managing conflict to recognizing our own tendencies toward selfishness, we look at how God's guidance can transform the way we relate to each other. Whether you're married, engaged, dating, or single this episode offers faith-based tools to overcome frustrations, support each other, and foster Christ-centered relationships that honors God. Through laughter and honest conversation, we'll help you see how God uses our relationships to shape us, refine us, and teach us to love selflessly. Tune in to learn how even conflict can become an opportunity for spiritual growth, leading to a stronger, more anchored connection with God and each other. In this mid week minisode I catch up with my good friend Lyndal Hunt. Lyndal introduces the concept of the "safety trap", and becoming aware of feeling so good that we start to neglect the ongoing work required to maintain sobriety. She emphasises the importance of vigilance and proactivity, even during the good times, as this is when the risk of relapse can be at its highest.Recovery is an ongoing process and that allowing complacency to set in can be detrimental.Consistent self-care practices and coping strategies are paramount in maintaining long-term well-being. We chat about the significance of sticking to your daily practice to stay on track. Even when you are on holidays!!!Recognising warning signs is crucial in preventing a potential relapse. Lyndal provides insights into being aware of shifts in mood, behaviour, or thought patterns. By taking action early on, individuals can prevent a full-blown relapse and get back on track towards recovery. We also discuss the importance of leaning on friends, family, support groups and your sober gang to stay connected. We touch upon the need for a mindset shift - viewing recovery as a continuous process rather than an endpoint. Embracing the idea of a lifelong journey in recovery can help you maintain focus and dedication and avoiding the trap of complacency. The book Lyndal mentioned is Nicole Lapera, How To Do The Work. I read a great quote from Dr Nicole LaPera aka The Holistic Psychologist yesterday and it resonated so much with me that I felt the need to share it with you. Why your thoughts have everything to your success in life and business I am so excited for you to listen to this episode because my guest is someone who helped get me out of a really difficult time in my life -- a time that I've shared about on this podcast. Her name is Dr. Nicole LaPera. She's a Cornell-trained holistic psychologist, and thanks to her book, How to Do The Work, I learned some really great tools on how to examine and correct the negative thought patterns I was having last year that led to a bit of a depression. If you've been tuning in to Online Marketing Made Easy for a while, you've heard a lot about this period of time in the beginning of 2021, right after our move to Nashville. It took a big toll on my personal and professional life, so that's why I'm getting super vulnerable in this interview and diving into all-things mental health. By the way, I am so glad that mental health is a topic that is losing its stigma, and becoming a bigger part of everyday conversation -- because let's be honest, it has a direct effect on how we show up in the world every single day. Trust me on this one. Dr. Nicole's approach is much different than some of the other types of therapy and personal development work that are out there, and you can expect to walk away from this episode with her unique perspective on how to: Recognize toxic patterns and how they manifest Heal from personal trauma so you can show up as the best version of yourself in life and in business Make permanent shifts in your thought patterns Take your mental health and healing into your own hands Here's a glance at this episode... [06:54] When Nicole was young, she struggled with anxiety. Her curiosity around her struggles inspired her to pursue a career in psychology so she could help others understand themselves and create change in the world. [09:02] After having a successful private practice, she felt inspired to look at new ways to create change to help people online. She wanted to share her stories and her tools, so she started The Holistic Psychologist. [10:53] The work emphasizes the daily nature of change required. Many of us are stuck because we're not living consciously. We need to be conscious in real time, so we don't repeat the old habits. [16:14] Set random alarms on your phone to check in with yourself. Ask, “How present am I? Am I fully immersed in whatever I'm doing?” Use your senses to come back to being present. [30:59] We have the choice to shift from disempowerment to empowerment, so long as we are doing things consciously and checking in with ourselves. [37:42] Make sure you get the nutrients that your brain needs to function. Geting enough sleep at night, your breathing, and taking care of your body are great ways to start. [41:36] Learn how to stay committed and connected to your truth and your vision in business. Be discerning about what you hear, and know what you stand for! Even before she came online as The Holistic Psychologist and amassed almost 5 million followers on Instagram in just over three years, Dr. Nicole Lapera was a “human fascinated with other humans.” While working with her clients as a clinical psychologist, she began to see the limitations within the traditional mental health system. A system that she noticed tended to label symptoms as disorders. Her extensive research into trauma, epigenetics and the importance of conscious awareness contradicted much of what she'd learned in school. She began to see and believe that our diagnoses and symptoms don't have to be with us for life. Nicole's book, “How to Do the Work,” spent 5 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, and she's got two more on the way. Her next book (which will be hitting shelves in about two years) is all about how to cultivate what she calls “heart-based (or 'heart-coherent') authentically connected relationships.” In this episode, I sat down with Nicole to discuss all things love, intimacy, and connection. **To connect with me directly, join the community on Instagram and support the podcast to keep it ad-free, visit www.backfromtheborderline.com ** Breakdown of topics covered: ■ Why we keep repeating the same dysfunctional relationship patterns over and over■ How a fear of silence can prevent us from holding space for our intimate partners■ How am unresolved fear of death and change can prevent us from truly and intimately connecting with the people we love■ Why you may feel stuck in an endless cycle of seeking treatment for your mental health (the importance of digging into the underlying cause and not just treating symptoms) ■ How the behaviors that sabotage our attempts at love and connection in adulthood are the same behaviors that kept us safe in childhood■ Understanding the concept of “love” as a core universal human need as it relates to our early childhood survival and development■ How feelings of unworthiness manifest in parent/child relationships (and is perpetuated and repeated throughout our adult romantic relationships)■ How to prepare with your partner BEFORE arguments happen (to minimize the fallout, shame and regret later)■ Struggles with control and micromanaging: how giving our partners unsolicited (and even well meaning) advice can damage connection and intimacy■ The importance of grieving the end of relationships (and the harm that can come from forcing ourselves to move on too quickly)■ How a lack of understanding our own needs and desires stops us from connecting with our partners■ The role boundaries and space play in the strengthening of relationships■ Triad Polyamory: Nicole's experience being in a “throuple” and what she's learned about intimacy and connection living and growing with two romantic partners Connect with Nicole:Instagram | @theholisticpsychologistWebsite | https://theholisticpsychologist.com/Book | How to Do the Work See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Finishing up this fun AMA series to get us into the new year, this episode brings together your questions about my mindset practices and personal life. I'm truly sitting in the Gravity guest's chair for this one, with eleven different hosts sitting across from me. We begin with my time management philosophies and where I picked them up (Hint: past Gravity guests). We go granular on this subject, detailing my day-to-day routines, how they've changed over the years, and what kinds of things I like to do in my free time – including a list of recommended reading. From there, we jump into the deep end with some great questions about how I perceive myself, my work, and the world they exist in. I talk about walking the line between appreciation or gratitude and the desire to make things better – before another well-worded inquiry prompts me to discuss the complicated role fear has played in my life. We finish up with a few popular podcast topics, how I make and keep friends as an adult and how my wife and I have gone about raising three exceptional young adults as we prepare for an empty nest. Perhaps these subjects are so commonly discussed because they don't have any one real answer or rule book. I hope my perspective on them, or on anything we've covered in these two AMA episodes, has shed some light on something you've been struggling with or made you think about something in a way that allows you to better understand yourself or someone in your life. This week Clemmie speaks to Sunday Times No1 (twice over!) author Vex King about self healing. The pair discuss: The importance of feeling your feelings. How self reflection and self healing is game changing but uncomfortable. How belief systems are formed. That default ‘positive thinking' isn't necessarily the answer. The power of asking yourself why you are reacting a certain way. The difference between self compassion and victimhood. Plus a whole lot more! It's an enlightening but down to earth episode. In today's episode, we cover what it means to work on yourself with Dr. Nicole LePera. She is the creator of the popular Instagram account @the.holistic.psychologist, was educated in clinical psychology at Cornell University and The New School of Social Research, and is the author of the best-selling How to Do the Work: Recognize Your Patterns, Heal from Your Past, and Create Your Self. Introduction It takes a lot of work to go from insight to effecting real long-lasting change, so how do you bridge the gap, why does focusing on the flaws of others hurt your own development, and how does your lack of emotional expressiveness take away from your life satisfaction? Introduction - 4:00 What does it mean to “do the work” when embarking on a path of self-development or healing after trauma? Why is it important to bridge the gap between insight and action and why do so many people fail to, leaving them unable to make progress? How do you overcome your own resistance to change? Detangling trauma from an idealized past - 13:32 What can you do to identify trauma in your life that is causing you to self-sabotage without even realizing it? What are the most common self-sabotaging behaviors people do without realizing it? What are trauma bonds and how does it show up in your relationships in destructive ways you might not even realize? Your unknown expectations can destroy your relationships - 28:28 What role do expectations play in trauma bonds influencing our current relationships? What do you do when you are ready to make a change but your friends or family aren't supportive or ready to make changes themselves? How should we think about emotions - 37:46 What steps can you take to start valuing your emotions instead of dismissing them or allowing other people to dismiss them? Why is self-compassion important when it comes to “doing the work” and growing into the person you want to be? What can you do if you're an overachiever and feel like you need achievement to feel complete? How do you overcome the fear of being who you want to be so you can get out of your own way? Have you ever felt a fear so strong that it nearly paralyzed you or left you trembling? Maybe the event was a real-life trauma, like being mugged. Or maybe it was something more subtle but equally as debilitating - like walking into an interview for your dream job and feeling all those eyes on you, sizing up who they can't wait to reject. All of these events can have long lasting effects on who you are and who you want to become. But you have to be willing to identify them, work through the effects they've had, and get out of your own way to be comfortable expressing who you really are.
