Back in 2011 I was approached by Curesearch, a nonprofit dedicated to eradicating children's cancer, asking if I'd be interested in helping with a new fundraising program they were starting, the Ultimate Hike. The deal was this: I would lead a 12-week training program with the ultimate goal of hiking 28.3 miles on the Foothills Trail straddling the North Carolina / South Carolina line — that's 28.3 miles all in one day. Along the way, they would vow to fundraise a minimum of $2,500 to help fight kids cancer. Hiking and helping kids? Who could refuse that! One of the hikers on my second hike was Chris Morton. Chris and his wife, Candi, were casual hikers with a keen interest in Ultimate Hike's mission: their 1-year-old daughter had a rare form of liver cancer and was undergoing treatment at the Duke Cancer Center in Durham, North Carolina. So motivated by the hike and Curesearch's mission was Chris that he continued doing the hike after that first year. When I left as coach of the Triangle area after five years, Chris became my replacement.Chris now has 20 Ultimate Hikes under his belt, and is gearing up to lead yet another group of hikers in the battle against childhood cancer. Chris joins us today to tells us about the Ultimate Hike, from his boots-on-the-ground perspective. If you're intrigued by the idea of hiking 28.3 miles in a day and helping kids with cancer at the same time, go to the Ultimate Hike website for the Foothills hike for additional information and to find the time of the next information session. It has been 67 years since powerful Hurricane Hazel made landfall close to the North Carolina/South Carolina border near Myrtle Beach, S.C., on the morning of Oct. 15, 1954. The storm wreaked havoc across the eastern United States and Canada on its way to the record books. Hazel is considered one of the worst natural disasters in North Carolina's history, and one of the most destructive hurricanes to impact the U.S.. The National Hurricane Center, says Hazel made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane with wind gusts up to 150 mph. Records for the most rain ever received in one calendar day in October were set in Greensboro, N.C., with 6.24 inches and in Pittsburgh, Pa., with 3.56 inches. Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and New York City all recorded their highest wind gusts on record at 94 mph, 98 mph and 113 mph respectively. Winds were actually sustained above hurricane force in Washington DC at 78 mph. Wind gusts were measured at 100 mph on the shore of Lake Ontario in northern New York. The storm's winds remained so strong inland as it traveled north at an amazing 55 mph and reached Ontario, Canada, that night. The hurricane was the strongest ever to strike so far to the north. All fishing piers from Myrtle Beach to Cedar Island, N.C., were destroyed and 15,000 homes and structures were destroyed in North Carolina alone. The devastation along the North Carolina beaches was enhanced as Hazel made landfall during the full moon of October, which was the highest lunar tide of the year. Storm surge reached a remarkable 18 feet in some locations, wiping out beaches. Dozens of people were killed in the U.S. and Canada. Learn more about your ad choices. The 77-mile Foothills Trail jumps back and forth along the North Carolina South Carolina state line, along the rugged Blue Ridge Escarpment. Backpackers who thru-hike the trail generally take 5 to 7 days to complete the challenging trek. And those are backpackers who typically have several years of experience and have trained for the hike. Now imagine being someone with little or no hiking experience and being challenged to hike more than a third of the entire 77-mile Foothills Trail in one day, but you have to be ready in four months or less to do it. That's the challenge faced by folks who undertake the Make-A-Wish Foundation's Trailblaze Challenge: train for 16 weeks, then, in one day, hike the westernmost 28.3 miles of the Foothills Trail.Today, we talk with Chris Webber, Director of Development for the Central & Western North Carolina chapter of Make-A-Wish. Today's podcast guest is Meghan Lowery, the owner and founder of Honest Elderberry Co. The company officially started in March 2019 and was especially vital in supporting her family during 2020 when her husband lost his job. Honest Elderberry Co sells syrup in 3 sizes as well as a "make your own kit" where one can get creative with adding their own sweetener or no sweetener at all. She has some more offerings coming out in the future including an elderberry body butter that is currently in the works. Meghan has always had an entrepreneurial spirit and a desire to help people especially after a lifestyle change many years ago. Elderberries have been used for centuries for their anti-viral properties and some of Meghan's customers have used her syrup for their inflammation. Elderberries are also known for their bioflavonoid properties meaning that they attack sick cells and viral strains. By this, research studies have shown that they can shorten the duration and intensity of an illness. Meghan's syrup also uses aroniaberries which have the highest anti-oxidant properties of any fruit. Other ingredients include organic cinnamon sticks, organic ginger root, organic whole clove, and North Carolina/South Carolina honey. All of these ingredients together can create a powerful immune support. Meghan suggests taking 1 tablespoon daily for general wellness and can up the dosage during an illness. The difference in her syrup versus a more commercialized brand is that it has to be refrigerated, meaning that it has no preservatives, alcohol, added sweeteners or thickeners. Honest Elderberry Co also has recipes on their social media for different ways to use the syrup including mocktails, glazes, and in smoothies. "We use fresh, organic elderberries. We have a couple of partnerships with a couple of berry farmers throughout the United States. So we source our berries directly from them." Meghan loves building relationships in the community especially when she gets to meet customers at Farmer's Markets or other events. She also enjoys working with her retail partners and her husband. He just created his own apparel line during this time called Amen Apparel Co. Counseling, eating well, and Christianity is what keeps her grounded. She wants to heal Charlotte because of her desire for people to have an experience with the healing powers of plants, herbs, and berries. "First and foremost, I'm a big people person and I love getting out and building relationships with people and meeting people in the community. My favorite people I love working with is when I go to Farmer's Markets and meet people I get to hear their story and I get to know who they are. That's one of my most favorite things." It's important to Meghan and her husband to also give back to the community. They have donated financially and products to several organizations including; Catawba Terrace Care Center, Children's Attention Home, Palmetto Women's Center, and the Uptown Farmer's Market who has partnered with Roof Above. She is inspired be the following healers; Green Brother's Juice who provide high quality smoothies and juices, Uptown Farmer's Market, and Carolina Functional Nutrition. If interested in buying some Honest Elderberry Syrup, they are located in 35 stores currently in the Charlotte region(click on the Locations tab) or you can order directly from their website. This Spring and Summer season, you can find Meghan and her family at the Uptown Farmer's Market and various other events in the area.

Anya Johnson and Will McGuire with CrowdfundNC join us for the podcast today. Will joined us a few years ago to talk about crowdfunding and his own company, CrowdfundNC. I wanted to circle back around and talk with Will and Anya about the crowdfunding initiatives in North Carolina as well as what the industry in general looks like.  I have long been a believer that local entrepreneurs are good investment opportunities as potentially investment opportunities for people willing AND able to take the risk. Companies like CrowdfundNC make it easier for local people to invest in local businesses.  As Charlotte in particular – and North Carolina/South Carolina – continue to grow more entrepreneurs will start businesses looking to capitalize on that growth.  There are some new regulations coming out which impacts accredited and non-accredited investors too. We discuss the opportunities in Raleigh and with Crowdfunding.  Anya encourages people to utilize the  website, NC Grind (https://ncgrind.com/) where people can go to find investment opportunities connected to North Carolina; get first access to NC business and investment news; and it provides education by luncheons, Networking events, etc. An emerging trend in early stage capital are syndicates – which are essentially groups of similar people/organizations coming together to build businesses in their community.  Examples could be investors in IoT, Med Tech, Fin Tech, real estate, etc.  Crowdfunding platforms are making it easier for people to form syndicates and organize capital around communities/industries.  Will and Anya dive into this during our call and I believe this is an area to watch in the coming years. Will and Anya discuss their connection to a large partner network with resources within North Carolina and outside the state to support community awareness , help raise funding, and connect people to other groups for support. Hear what CrowdfundNC has to offer – you will definitely understand their mission - to grow North Carolina's entrepreneurial ecosystem by democratizing access to capital for all businesses providing new economic opportunities for all.  Ultimately as we’ve said before on the podcast there are avenues developing that will allow investors to better invest locally just like avenues have developed in the food world for us to buy locally.  I’m excited to watch this trend and invite you to follow Will and Anya to stay in the loop.   William Bissett is the owner of and an Investment Advisor Representative of Portus Wealth Advisors, a Registered Investment Adviser. Registration does not imply a certain level of skill or training. I-95 South is filled with with directions and distractions. Now, it’s debatable as to how you define the difference between “directions” and “distractions.” For me, the South of the border exit at the North Carolina/South Carolina state line is a distraction. To my children, it’s a destination. I see a delay and they see ice cream, an arcade and best of all - to my kids - the big sombrero in the sky!! Carrying on, second...for me, I see the the Tanger Outlet at the South Carolina/Georgia boarder as a distraction and my wife sees it as a dwelling place. Why in the world do they call it an “outlet” when all they are trying to do is get you stuck in there? Thanks a lot Spartina 449!! I’m kidding! Honorable mentions on this highway include Roanoke Rapids, Wilson, and every Chick-fil-A. Anyway, the point is that life is like a highway filled with directions and distractions. They key is to know where you’re going and more importantly, who you’re going with on this journey. I’ve learned the rhythm to drive this road! On the way to Florida, we stop to eat at lunch Chick-Fil-A in Roanoke Rapids. We take a break at South of the Boarder. No, we are not going to drive down to look at the lake in Santee. We stop to have dinner, shop and sleep for the night near the Tanger Outlet in South Carolina. Then, we get up and drive the rest of the way the next day. This plan makes everyone happy. As husband and father, I’ve stated the direction and I move us to our destination (kinda, lol). Our Father in Heaven has our life planned out much better than my I-95 trips. Here is how we can focus on His plan: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭3:5-6‬ ‭
