“Loneliness isn't just an uncomfortable feeling; it's dangerous to us as individuals and as a society.” In 2023, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy went so far as to declare it an epidemic. "Being socially disconnected is...[as detrimental as] caused by smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day..." Failing to address it would lead Americans to "further retreat to our corners—angry, sick, and alone."But what if churches held the key to addressing this growing problem? In this new season of the Fresh Expressions podcast, we'll explore the loneliness epidemic and how contextually-rooted Christian communities can draw people to Jesus and to each other. To kick off this discussion, host Heather Jallad will be joined by Luke Edwards, author of Becoming Church, and Fresh Expressions Director of Training Shannon Kiser. We'll dig into what the loneliness epidemic looks like and how we have seen God work through the church to spread love and connection.

Partnership For The Arts Group Podcast Show #85 “Where We Talk Art …with Musician / KMH Music Store Owner and Author Chris Morton. While traveling the northeast, Victor took a trip to join Chris in his KMH Music store for this episode. Chris, a musician from an early age, is well known throughout central and northern Maine for his drumming skills and for being the co-founder of several stage bands, most notably the Star City Syndicate which has an unusually large brass section and draws huge crowds wherever they perform. However, that's just a small glimpse into this young man's life in the entertainment world. The underlying story of his journey begins with Chris's best friend and school music teacher, Larry Hall, who fed his passion for music that grew into the enduring creation and operation of the KMH music store until Mr. Hall's passing in 2018. But this heartwarming story of a lifelong friendship with Chris's well known and beloved mentor didn't end there. KMH continues to be a major source for music instruments, lessons and repairs, while competing with today's environment of online ordering. Believe us when we say you'll be inspired when you hear how this store and its two remaining owners, Chris and Randy, found a very special purpose that revolves around the legacy of Mr. Hall and chocolate chip cookies. You can check out KMH Music at the link below. https://www.kmhmusicshop.com/ “Where We Talk Art” is based at the Visual Art Center in Punta Gorda FL. https://visualartcenter.org/

He's been a youth minister, a tech and branding guru and was on the planting team of Austin Mustard Seed, a church community in Austin, Texas where he lives with his wife Laura and their son Micah. On this episode, we visit one of our sponsors, KMH Music in Presque Isle, and its owner (and our member of our band) Chris Morton. Mark Brock had a relatively smooth transition after retiring from the US Army as a Command Sergeant Major. Though he landed a SkillBridge and then a great job pretty quickly, he discovered that the struggles of the military transition were much bigger than landing a job. He vowed that he would wait until he had 2 years of experience in the private sector before he started sharing advice. However, his first piece of advice was a list of 10 lessons – many of them not even related to the job search – that prompted me to reach out to him so he could share those lessons with my listeners here on the show. You will find Mark's no B.S. approach to advice to be very refreshing and candid. Here is an overview of Mark's list:1. Get over yourself. Employers call BS on that flowery resume that depicts all your scope and responsibility as a Senior Leader. Tailor the resume for the position and be reasonable in your achievements.2. Civilians do not understand the military structure or lingo. To them a Corps CSM is the same as a Corps Armorer. I mean honestly, an Armorer in Corps probably works harder than the CSM anyway.3. Find a couple of hobbies to challenge yourself physically and mentally that you will have fun doing. For me it was Brazilian Jujitsu and learning how to play the guitar. I literally ran 2 times in all of 2021.4. Thanks to social media it is easier to maintain friendships. Camaraderie will be found at your new job, gym, or neighborhood. You will assimilate.5. Catch up with the lost family time. You rowed hard for years, now it's time to put them first.6. Don't do anything you don't want to do.7. Grow your hair, grow a beard, pierce your ears, do whatever you want to do within the limits of your chosen profession.8. Take your health serious, you are in worse shape than you realize. It will all come out when you retire, trust me…These next two were added by someone else before they were published, but I think they are valid points so let's go through them together9. Unless you go into public service, such as law enforcement, healthcare, social work, etc., you will probably not so something as "meaningful" to society as military service. Be OK with making your meaning outside of your chosen profession - your faith, your family, your volunteer service, and your hobbies. This is Ok. You've paid your debt to society many times over. (Added by Chris Morton)10. And since #9 is true, relax. You're probably not saving babies every day. Most bad decisions in business cost people that already have made a couple of bucks. They'll be all right. Back in 2011 I was approached by Curesearch, a nonprofit dedicated to eradicating children's cancer, asking if I'd be interested in helping with a new fundraising program they were starting, the Ultimate Hike. The deal was this: I would lead a 12-week training program with the ultimate goal of hiking 28.3 miles on the Foothills Trail straddling the North Carolina / South Carolina line — that's 28.3 miles all in one day. Along the way, they would vow to fundraise a minimum of $2,500 to help fight kids cancer. Hiking and helping kids? Who could refuse that! One of the hikers on my second hike was Chris Morton. Chris and his wife, Candi, were casual hikers with a keen interest in Ultimate Hike's mission: their 1-year-old daughter had a rare form of liver cancer and was undergoing treatment at the Duke Cancer Center in Durham, North Carolina. So motivated by the hike and Curesearch's mission was Chris that he continued doing the hike after that first year. When I left as coach of the Triangle area after five years, Chris became my replacement.Chris now has 20 Ultimate Hikes under his belt, and is gearing up to lead yet another group of hikers in the battle against childhood cancer. Chris joins us today to tells us about the Ultimate Hike, from his boots-on-the-ground perspective. If you're intrigued by the idea of hiking 28.3 miles in a day and helping kids with cancer at the same time, go to the Ultimate Hike website for the Foothills hike for additional information and to find the time of the next information session. According to the abortion industry’s own experts, medical waste companies such as New Mexico Waste Recovery are the abortion industry’s weak link. The abortion industry is on record stating that, “We are all one incinerator away, or one incineration company away, from being closed.” Created Equal is partnering with Abortion Free New Mexico to expose New Mexico Waste Recovery, the medical waste disposal company that is enabling the largest late-term abortion facility in the nation, Southwestern Women’s Options, located in Albuquerque, NM. Watch the video:https://bit.ly/2QOcLP9 In undercover videos leaked by GotNews of a 2013 National Abortion Federation conference, Abortionist Renee Chelian discusses the problem of disposing of aborted babies. While proposing solutions, she comments, “I had five months’ worth of fetal tissue in my freezers.” On today’s show, Mark talks to Tara Shaver of Abortion Free New Mexico who has obtained photos and video footage from sidewalk counselors that document New Mexico Waste Recovery as the disposal company enabling Southwestern Women’s Options’ abortion business. Question: What if New Mexico Waste Recovery were to stop doing the dirty work of Southwestern Women’s Options? Answer: Southwestern Women’s Options would be unable to dispose of the babies they kill, and the murder of thousands of innocent children by Southwestern Women’s Options would likely halt. Take Action: Contact New Mexico Waste Recovery Owner, Chris Morton, at 505.545.9824 and respectfully request New Mexico Waste Recovery discontinue providing Southwestern Women’s Options their services to dispose of aborted children and the instruments used to kill them. Sign the petition HERE: https://projectweaklink.com/nmwr/ to stop New Mexico Waste Recovery from collaborating in the deaths of thousands of babies by abortion. The Balderton Podcast: Tech Investment | Venture Capital | Startup Funding
Chris Morton is the CEO and founder of Lyst, a fashion aggregation and discovery app, and universal checkout cart. Before launching Lyst, Morton was part of our investment team here at Balderton Capital. Chris talks to Ben Goldsmith about building a team from 3-150 people, and about the decision he made to take the business through a massive pivot. 0020 Chris has taken Lyst from 3 cofounders in London, to a team of 150 spread across continents. 0100 Chris explains that fluidity and informality were key to hiring at an early stage. Of course, this has changed over time and now Lyst have recruited a Head of Talent to bring order to the proceedings. But Chris is proud that they can still hire at speed. 0305 Question: Do early entrepreneurs need to have a 1/2/5/10 year plan for hiring? Chris advocates hiring for today, not tomorrow; as the concept of what 'tomorrow' is going to be can change. 0450 Sometimes the earliest hires that an entrepreneur makes can't scale with the team, because these people are best at launching companies. This isn't a black mark, it's just the way scaling works. But Chris does advocate managing changes to your business actively, rather than being passively pushed about by them. 0700 Question: What is the effect of raising large sums of money on team growth? Chris explains that he advocates a process of SCALING RAPIDLY and then 'FIXING' any feathers that may have been ruffled during this process. 0930 A piece of advice Chris has for other entrepreneurs: don't use the size of your team as a measurement of success. 1200 50% of Chris' team at Lyst are engineers or data scientists. Chris explains how, as a non-technical founder, he maintains and grows such a specialised team. 1600 Question: How important is a technical cofounder? 1800 Chris is a rare thing: an investor turned entrepreneur. Chris dives into how his experience at Balderton helped when it came to raising money. 2110 Lyst went through a huge pivot - Chris explains how he convinced his team, his investors, and other stakeholders that this huge change was the right thing to do. 2535 Another big tip from Chris: When you make a huge 'bet the business'-type decision, such as a large pivot, you can't always be as data-driven as you would like. Of course, use all of the data around you, but don't be afraid to listen to your gut: finding a mix of conviction and data is key. 2830 Chris talks about why it's useful for entrepreneurs to be challenged by their investors.
Chris Morton continued our summer in the parables with the Lost Coin and the Lost Sheep from Luke 15.
