This episode of the Growing Small Town Show features three humans that have, in some way, shape, or form, partnered or funded some of the work that we do here at Growing Small Towns. Because we're a nonprofit, we are always looking for partners who believe in this work as much as we do to help make it happen. Our philosophy is “Work with the willing and love the rest,” because we don't believe in forcing people to support this work if it's not their thing! But, we do dearly love and appreciate the humans and organizations who come alongside us to bring the mission of Growing Small Towns to the communities that want and need our help. This episode features three of those humans, and each of them share why and how they chose to get involved with GST, why they're enthusiastic about what we do, and what it means to them and their organization to partner with us. In this episode, we hear from: Bernie Sinner, President and Senior Lending Officer at Bank North, and a member of our board Kathy Marquette, Associate Professor of Business Administration and Management at North Dakota State College of Science Paul Matthys, CEO of Cass County Electric Cooperative
When we first launched Growing Small Towns, we did it with a bus tour. We loaded a bunch of business professionals from the Fargo-Moorhead area onto a bus and held them hostage for eight ours (okay, not really, they were completely willing participants!) and we did a tour of the area, visited local businesses and our building, and had such a ball that a bus trip of some sort has become a repeat event. It's a flagship thing for GST and one of our favorites because of how unique it is, and the magic that happens when you get different kinds of people together, get them out of their comfort zones, and drive them around rural America for a bit. This episode features four bus tour participants (some multi-year participants!) and they're here to talk about how they even heard about the tour, what they loved most about it, why it's such a unique experience, and other things they learned while sort of captive on a bus for hours with a bunch of people they didn't really know In this episode, we hear from: Dr. Ruchi Joshi Bhardwaj, Senior Program Manager of Education & Research at Grand Farm Lee Schwartz, Marketing Director at North Dakota State College of Science and Founder of Small Town Labs Leah Reed, Operations Manager at Do Good Better Consulting Emma McIntyre, Manager of Development and Partnerships at Folkways Links and Resources Mentioned: A whole episode about the bus tour: https://www.growingsmalltowns.org/post/episode87 Lee was a guest! Funding, filling programs, and finding partners in industry - these are three challenges facing technical colleges across the country. And a great solution to all these challenges: industry-sponsored programs.North Dakota State College of Science has an incredible Diesel Technology program that partners with the biggest brands in agricultural equipment like John Deere, Case, Komatsu and Caterpillar to offer hands-on, career-relevant learning on the latest equipment being used in the workforce today. Through this program, students are sponsored by a dealer to work through the courses on brand-specific equipment, ensuring a pipeline of skilled talent that's experienced on the right technology for those dealerships. In this episode, we sat down with NDSCS president Dr. Rod Flanigan to dive into this program and how successful it's been.Discover the power of industry partnerships in building a technical program that benefits the college, learners and employers alike, and get advice for how to launch a similar program in your own institution!3 Big Takeaways from this episode:Industry-sponsored programs benefit students with career-relevant skills and experiences:The industry-sponsored diesel program benefits students by providing them with valuable hands-on experience, access to state-of-the-art equipment, and opportunities for professional development through internships and sponsorships, ultimately preparing them for successful careers in the field. They get access to the same equipment from the biggest brands they'll encounter in the workforce, and they get assistance from their sponsor while going through their education.Industry-sponsored programs benefit the college with funding, filling programs, and finding friends in industry: With these strong partnerships with industry, colleges can get access to the latest equipment, a pipeline of dedicated students, and the added benefit of having a reputation for career-relevant programming.Industry-sponsored programs benefit employers with a pipeline of skilled workers: When a student is required to be sponsored by a company in order to be admitted into a program, and when they're supported through the program financially and otherwise by that company, and when they're confident in finding employment upon completion of that program, there's a fostering of brand loyalty that just can't be beat. These companies will benefit by having a pipeline of skilled technicians who learned on their specific equipment and are work-ready to add value to the organization.Resources mentioned in this episode:Learn more about NDSCS's Diesel Technology ProgramLearn more about North Dakota State College of ScienceConnect with NDSCSFacebook | LinkedIn | Instagram | Twitter | YouTubeView episode page: https://techedpodcast.com/flanigan/Instagram - Facebook - YouTube - TikTok - Twitter - LinkedIn

It's about embracing different ‘lives' within our lifespan stages—20s, 20-40, 40-60, and beyond. I've reached my ‘third life' at 40, prompting a focus on becoming a composed figure amidst chaos, solving problems with a stoic calmness. Thoughts On Breathing Breathing used to begin with gratitude for that initial breath, but it's slipped away. Yet, hiking strenuous mountain trails redefines it. A 17-mile trek for fishing at 11,000 feet or a seemingly easy 3-mile hike with my daughter. That is challenging for her but exhilarating for me. Climbing steep slopes, sweat-drenched, and panting, I pause, leaning against the mountainside, smiling despite the exhaustion. My daughter wonders why. It's simple—the feeling of being alive in those moments. Breathing, in those hikes, signifies unequivocal existence. The intensity of physical exertion validates life. Every breath is a confirmation of being undeniably present, alive, and vibrant. Bullying Story My childhood bully, Jonas, fueled my drive. Instead of combating him, I channeled his negativity into motivation. I held onto the vision of future success, using his actions as a catalyst. Keeping my focus on the prize—my success in architecture, construction, and personal pursuits—kept me driven. It wasn't about fighting back; it was about harnessing that negative energy as fuel for my ambitions, letting it ignite a fire in me to excel and succeed beyond those bullying moments. In this episode we get a chance to feature one program that is doing incredible work to train the next generation of farmers, agronomists, consultants and other ag-related professionals. The North Dakota State College of Science, based in Wahpeton offers two year programs designed to help prepare students for agricultural career paths and connect them with employers who are looking to hire. The options for students to focus on include animal science, ag business, agronomy, precision agriculture, farm management, ranch management, and ag transfer for those who want to go on to complete a four-year degree. Joining us are Anissa Hoffman and Chandra Langseth. Anissa is an associate professor in her 16th year at NDSCS working in the soils and agronomy coursework. Chandra is a second year instructor at the college who teaches all of the precision ag courses as well as some basic agronomy. There are some really compelling reasons for NDSCS' 2-year model of postsecondary education to fit the needs of both students and hiring companies, especially in agriculture. We talk about the types of students and employers that are getting involved with the program, their hands-on teaching philosophy, and how they're preparing the next generation of agricultural professionals. The two year program is a great opportunity for these students, but it's also in high demand from agricultural employers. “I think it's safe to say we have way more demand than students that we have to offer industry….. We always have continual calls, continual emails from places looking for people….They want someone that's got a good work ethic, maybe some knowledge about basic agricultural things, but if they are a motivated person, willing to work, be there, show up, be somewhat self-directed, they'd be a great candidate for most of our employers.” - Anissa Hoffman Anissa and Chandra are in a unique position to hear directly from employers who tell them what skills exactly employers are looking for. They have the opportunity to foster not only the work ethic and attitude that Anissa mentioned earlier but also the knowledge and skills to lay the groundwork for a successful career. “We focus on the fundamentals, the things that are going to be consistent from one operation to the next, but then within that, every operation is going to be a little unique. So there's always a really steep learning curve, wherever our students end up. But if we can provide some of that foundation in two years, that's not a very long time. So we've got a lot to kind of get through.” -Chandra Langseth This Week on Soil Sense: Meet Anissa Hoffman, an associate professor in her 16th year at NDSCS, and Chandra Langseth, a second year instructor at the college. Explore the programs offered at North Dakota State College of Science and the benefits they offer their students Discover the teaching goals and techniques they employ and the value that adds to the education they provide Connect with Soil Sense Soil Sense Initiative Soil Sense Podcast is hosted by Tim Hammerich of the Future of Agriculture Podcast.

The area wasn't settled by Europeans until after the Civil War. One of the town's major attractions appears to be the Chahinkapa Zoo, which is home to over 300 animals from 6 continents. The newest animals at the zoo are two white rhinos that arrived in May of 2018. Settle in for a strange ride through a lovely little town!
