The number 12 carries religious, mythological and magical symbolism, generally representing perfection, entirety or cosmic order in traditions since antiquity. It’s also the number of qualifiers teams in the NAIA are allowed to send to the national championships, and the most frequent number won by Super Bowl winning quarterbacks. None of that is scientifically researched because why should I be the last guy on the earth to fact-check things before I post them. The first citation is from my former roommate Willie Evans and the rest of the 12 House Crew as we celebrate the 12 House New Year on 12:12 at 12:12. This is Short Time Shots, your mostly daily recap of the scores and more from around the world of wrestling. I’m Jason Bryant and I’ll probably be recording this around 12:12 … on the 13th. By the way, it’s never the best look to apologize in the intro of a podcast, so I won’t. However, why no Shots the past few days? Well after realizing it’s extremely difficult to schedule and cultivate this while working an event - I was in Canada announcing their Olympic Trials - it’s also tough to do when you don’t have another parent around. My wife was also traveling for business. But I did decide to push one out today - why? Well, the longer you put off doing something, the longer it takes for you to actually do it - or something. You know what I mean. Minnesota Beer of the Night: French River by Wooden Hill Brewing. To be honest, I didn’t like it too much. It’s a 6.5 percent saison, but it tasted better when I had it at the brewery in Edina. Could just be a bad can. Dual Meets:  In Division II, No. 2 Nebraska-Kearney dropped in-state rival Chadron State 26-16 in Western Nebraska. Top-ranked Wesley Dawkins bumped up to 141 pounds and picked up a major decision for the Lopers. Returning national champion Matt Malcom also picked up a win at 165. No. 6 Upper Iowa cruised past Southwest Minnesota State 28-6 in Northern Sun action. The Peacocks’ top-ranked 197-pounder, Nick Baumler earned a major decision there. In Division III, No. 10 North Central saw ranked wrestlers Robbie Precin and Cody Baldridge pick up wins in the Cardinals’ 32-9 win over UW-Oshkosh. No. 19 Central College smashed Nebraska Wesleyan 45-4. In the loss, Nebraska Wesleyan All-American Eron Haynes scored 23 points - for the second time this year - in a 23-13 major decision win. Haynes has scored over 20 three times this season. St. Olaf put 10 wrestlers on the mat and scored a 45-12 win over NAIA Waldorf on Thursday night. So far, if you’re keeping score, the office of St. Olaf President David Anderson hasn’t even acknowledged receipt of my interview requests as the school announced it would end the sport at the end of the year. Vanguard, an NAIA school in California, won the school’s first dual meet in 39 years as the Lions beat another California NAIA school, Life Pacific 31-19. Vanguard reinstated the wrestling program this season. No report with Central Christian and Neosho. Southwestern Oregon Community College beat Division III Pacific (Ore.) 16-12. This one isn’t one I’d like to focus on, but this dual featured four double forfeits and two of the regular variety. On Wednesday, Division II Lander earned its first win in school history, a 41-13 win over NAIA Truett McConnell. Congrats to coach R.C. LaHaye for the win there. Also of note, Johnson & Wales beat the U.S. Coast Guard Academy 17-16 on criteria in a battle of two of the top programs in New England. Notables on the Docket: NC State is at Appalachian State, while Lock Haven hosts Navy at Red Lion High School in Pennsylvania. That’s all there is in D1. In D2, St.

A load of duals in the NAIA in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Schools involved are Bluefield, Central Baptist, Reinhardt, Life, Lyon, Jamestown (N.D.), Campbellsville, Cumberland University, Keiser and Southwest Virginia of the NJCAA.  FROM THE DWN: Menlo remains No. 1in the recent NAIA women’s rankings, released on Thursday. The Oaks lead Jamestown, Campbellsville and Life in the top five.  The Daily Princetonian, the student newspaper at Princeton University, features the lone woman on the Princeton Tiger wrestling team, Demetra Yancopolous. Molly Duffy of The Gazette in Cedar Rapids identifies what exactly the issue is in Iowa with sanctioning girls wrestling. It’s a pretty solid read. And yes, there’s a lot of wrestling in the news because of this.   Tom Housenick of the Allentown (Pa.) Morning Call features the Lehigh Valley wrestling scene and the importance of upcoming super tournaments like the Ironman and Beast of the East and how they relate to postseason success in the rugged state of Pennsylvania. Northwestern added two-time All-American Emery Parker to its coaching staff on Thursday. Parker was a three-time NCAA qualifier and was one of the nations leaders in having his first name spelled incorrectly.  Communications offices at Lehigh and Ohio State did some solid work as Lehigh featured All-American Jordan Kutler, while Ohio State featured All-American Luke Pletcher in features on their respective dot-coms.  FivePointMove talks about the underrated bracket at 57kg and also has an interview with Xavier Johnson. [powerpress] I’m Jason Bryant, and this is Short Time Shots, a mostly daily look at the scores and more from around the world of wrestling. My wife’s asleep, so I’m doing something different and recording this using the Backpack app on my phone. I’m standing in my 44-degree garage. And of course, this is now the second time I’m recording it, since stupid me tested it, changed a setting, but didn’t re-test it. So now I’m back in the garage. This isn’t my initial script, so screw it.  Dual Meets:  As noted in the Monday episode, there was a dose of Division III wrestling in Ohio where No. 4 Mount Union beat Muskingum 54-0, highlighted by seven falls from the Purple Raiders, including a 10-second fall from returning All-American and top-ranked Antwon Pugh. No. 1 Jordin James, last year’s national champion at 133, picked up one of the other six falls. John Carroll beat Heidelberg 25-15, No. 9 Baldwin Wallace beat Ohio Northern 28-6 and No. 15 Otterbein beat Wilmington 53-0. Of note with Wilmington, this is the second year the team has been active since reinstatement, but with no home duals last year with an abbreviated schedule, Tuesday was the first home dual in seven years for the Fighting Quakers - yes, I say again, Fighting Quakers. All-American heavyweight and top-ranked Drew Kasper had a fall in 94 seconds there for Otterbein. In the NAIA, Baker beat Graceland 32-12. Returning national champion Lucas Lovvorn picked up a major decision at 174 pounds over Brennan Swafford of Graceland. Lovvorn was No. 1 in the preseason at 174, while Swafford was No. 2 at 165 in the NAIA preseason rankings.  GET A FREE MONTH OF PODCAST HOSTING WITH LIBSYN There are approximately 66 active wrestling podcasts out there, with 20 of them on the Mat Talk Podcast Network. Go to www.takedowncancer.org for information or contact Mark Neu at mneu@shakopee.k12.mn.usLet’s TakeDown Cancer! - No one fights alone! Notables on the Docket for November 20: No Division I duals on Wednesday, but here’s some of the things I’ll be watching. In Division III, Wartburg hosts Simpson, while UW-La Crosse will face UW-Eau Claire and UW-Platteville will face UW-Whitewater. In Division II, it’s a PSAC tilt with Millersville heading northeast on Route 222 to face Kutztown, passing a few places in Ephrata where I used to throw darts. St. Cloud State opens up the Northern Sun slate by hosting Southwest Minnesota State. In the NAIA, Briar Cliff heads to Northwestern (Iowa), while on the women’s side, Texas Wesleyan heads north to face Oklahoma City.  FROM THE DWN: As teased on Monday’s episode, there were some major shake-ups in the NWCA Division I Coaches Poll. Virginia Tech moved up to No. 4, tied with Wisconsin, while ironically, Lehigh is now tied at No. 7 with Oklahoma State, the same squad they beat by criteria on Saturday. I mean, it was a tie-breaker that decided it, right? Rider also entered at No. 20, while three teams who beat ranked teams - Stanford, Illinois and Michigan State, were just outside the rankings this week. As far as the individual rankings go, each site puts them out Monday or Tuesday. As I said last week, those individual rankings won’t be linked in the newsletter because some sites put them behind paywalls, while others update the same page weekly, which makes for sharing links difficult because it thinks its a repeat. Whatever. That’s one shortcoming I can’t quite overcome here. I’m going to share them all, or I’m going to share none. Gotta keep it fair, right? Bo Nickal’s going to do some grappling thing. I’m not much of a grappling guy, so take of it what you will.  Five Point Move tells you what you need to know about Nolan Baker. And this is something you need to know.  Nick Forrester talks with Kyle Snyder about his move to the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club in a feature on TeamUSA.org. Nick’s been covering the Olympic beat for a while at a few different places.  Division III Adrian College brought wrestling back a couple of seasons ago. Now the Bulldogs will honor the school’s winningest wrestling coach on November 21 against Manchester. Check out the information on Paul MacDonald Night.  PA Power Wrestling released its annual Top Incoming Freshman report. Why is this relevant? Well, PA is the best high school wrestling state in the country, so when there’s hammer freshmen in the Keystone State, you’re going to hear about them. Yes, I said PA is the best high school wrestling state - don’t @ me.  You want some serious don’t @ me stuff? Read Kyle Klingman’s piece focusing on Terry Steiner and why he believes the U.S. should embrace freestyle over folkstyle.  Inside CO Wrestling features Fort Collins in Episode 21 of the site’s Border to Border series.  I typically don’t even acknowledge the existence of Barstool Sports, but former Kent State wrestler Kyle Bauer has been on their staff for over a year and he has put out his something-another All-cauliflower ear team. One guy who made the squad was Dalton Robertson, the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week. You’ll want to go to the show notes and click on the link of Mr. Robertson. The name … is Dalton.  USA Wrestling announced that Loves Park, Illinois will be the host of the 16U National Duals, aka the Cadet Duals. Where is Loves Park? I had to Google it. It’s just outside of Rockford. Ok then.  InterMat’s Craig Sesker wrote a feature on Luke Pletcher.  On The Network On The Mat talks with Wisconsin coach Chris Bono, but there’s a pretty cool discussion with Doug Waggoner, the man behind QuantWrestling, a new wrestling analytics site trying to provide stats and analysis based on actual performance data. Bono is entertaining as always.  The ODU Monarch Matcast revisits ODU’s loss at No. 9 NC State last weekend. Coach Daryl Thomas believes the match was closer than the score indicated. ODU is one of the charter schools on the network, as is Virginia Tech, which I record on Wednesday.  You can get to read those stories and more from Mat Talk Online’s daily wrestling newsletter. Elmo from Vision Quest once said, it ain't the six minutes, it's what happens in that six minutes. So with that in mind, here comes the most cram-packed six minutes of wrestling news, although, I typically don't care about how long or short this show is, this is Short Time Shots, a look back at the day's wrestling scores and more. I'm your host, Jason Bryant and I was too young to be an extra in Vision Quest. So the Vision Quest theme has been a constant this week. On Day 302 and 303 of #WrestlingShirtADay, I rocked shirts from RedBubble.com with Thompson High and Hoover High wrestling teams. Louden Swain, as many of you know, represented Thompson, while Brian Shute was a Hoover guy. Of note, his name was Gary Shute in the book. I still recommend reading the book if you get a chance. It won't ruin it for you, but you wrestling people out there might actually relate to it more so than the Hollywood depiction where sometimes fictionalization is more engaging to a viewer. What isn't fiction is the bit of wrestling history that unfolded on Thursday night in the Southern Conference. Davidson has been one of Division I's doormats pretty much forever. It's rare the Wildcats even win a conference dual, and most of the time when they did, it was against VMI or Campbell. But with Campbell improving, that's likely a thing of the past. One thing the Wildcats program had NEVER done -- beat The Citadel -- that is, until Thursday night when Davidson ended a 54-match winless streak against the Bulldogs in a 25-15 win, the first SoCon win of the season for Andy Lausier's squad. Davidson's wrestling program started in 1920 and the earliest results we can find were from the 1962 season. I'm not saying this to kick The Citadel when they're down, it has been a rough year in Charleston, but Davidson doesn't win duals like this -- until now. Wins at 125 and 141 helped Davidson pull away late with Michael McClelland's first career victory, a tech fall at 125, and Dustin Runzo picking up the W at 141 to close things out. McClelland was 0-16 on the season coming into the dual. Also down tobacco road, Duke used technical falls in the last two matches of the dual to get past Appalachian State 25-17. Technical falls by Mitch Finesilver and 157 and Zach Finesilver at 165 gave the Blue Devils the win. Harvard beat Brown 21-12 in what was dubbed the downtown showdown in downtown Providence. The other half of that showdown saw Division III's fourth-ranked team, Johnson & Wales, beat in-state rival Roger Williams 28-12. Lonnie Morris and the crew with great promotion there. Keeping it in Division III for a bit, No. 18 Centenary beat Delaware Valley 33-14 and Centenary head coach John Garriques earned his 100th career victory as the Cyclones head coach. He's done a fine job there in Hackettstown, New Jersey. In a battle of two of our nation's smaller service academies, a win by Victor Raigoza at heavyweight was enough to give the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy a 19-16 upset victory over No. 22 Coast Guard on Thursday. The Mariners, YES, MARINERS, trailed 16-10 before Raigoza's winning decision was set up by Blake Bunce's fall at 197 pounds. Late heroics were also needed as No. 24 Central College survived a scare in the Iowa Conference from Simpson. The Dutch, yes, Dutch, trust me on this one, got the match-winner from top-ranked 125-pounder C.J. Pestano. The All-American earned a technical fall in the dual's final bout to close things out. Another notable from Division III was No. 12 North Central won the CCIW - that's the Collegiate Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin - championship on Thursday, outdistancing second-place Millikin 125.5-114.5. The Cardinals won two individual titles and had four runners-up. Heading back over to Division II, No. 1 St. Cloud State remained unbeaten, improving to 18-0 and winning the program's 27th straight dual. The Huskies wrap up their Northern Sun schedule on February 15 against Augustana -- the one in South Dakota. And file this under things that can only happen in college sports - Indiana Tech beat Lourdes University of Ohio 30-15 in the NAIA. This was a conference dual. Not super strange since the schools are two hours apart. The thing is, they're both affiliate members of the SOONER Athletic Conference. Like Oklahoma. To get from Lourdes to conference foe Wayland Baptist down in Plainview, Texas? Nearly 1,300 miles. I should be used to it with my alma mater in the same conference as UTEP, which is 2,000 miles away from Norfolk. You'll need a couple hundred episodes of Short Time Shots to make that drive. So I'm a craft beer guy. I wasn't always a craft beer guy. It took me to move to Pennsyvlania at age 25 to realize that there were good beers out there that weren't named Natural, Beast or Bud. But I also have a very diverse palate when it comes to the types of beers I drink. In my older age, I've learned to drink for flavor not to drink to figure out how many beers we can get for $20 at the local Farm Fresh or Food Lion -- yes, in Virginia, you could buy cheap swill at the grocery store. Thankfully by the time I was actually 21, Yuengling Lager had made its way down to Virginia. You know what the difference between a pint of Lager in Pennsylvania and a pint of Lager in Virginia is? About four bucks. Anyway, you're not here to hear me talk about my beer fridge - or maybe you are - but this is Short Time Shots, a look back at the day's scores and more in the world of college wrestling from January 25, 2018, I'm your media guide slinging, craft beer enjoying Hall of Fame wrestling announcer, writer and broadcaster Jason Bryant. But before I get to the scores, I want to call out my buddies over at the Bloodround Podcast, which is pretty much the antithesis of anything you'll find on the Mat Talk Podcast Network. They're close to Bell's Brewing out there in Michigan. I picked up a six pack today of a limited seasonal they put out called Hopslam. I'm not by any means an IPA guy. I typically don't like drinking a pine cone. But I also like rarities, so I'll give it a shot. The promotional video says … you know what. I'm just going to let you hear it in their own words … I'm very afraid. Now, FINALLY to wrestling, there were two Division I duals and both were in the Southern Conference. Appalachian State remained unbeaten in the SoCon with an 18-12 win over Campbell in a match that was rescheduled from some snow that hit the Southeast a week or so ago. Key victories there for the Mountaineers were by 174-pounder Forrest Przybysz who beat Andrew Morgan 13-11 and Codi Russell, who beat Nathan Boston in sudden victory at 133 pounds. Gavin Londoff's win at 149 over Zach Barnes was the match-clincher for JohnMark Bentley's squad. VMI, which has been struggling quite a bit in recent memory, picked up its first win over The Citadel in 11 years. The Keydets picked up falls from Blake Hohman and Gage Levine to help push past the Bulldogs 24-21 in a battle of bonus points. Hohman and 133-pound winner Hunter Starner are from my home district, so shout out to Mike Faus' New Kent Trojans and Doug Roper's Tabb Tigers -- they helped a D1 team get a W tonight. In Division II, St. Cloud State improved to 15-0 and extended its win streak to 24 in a row with a 42-3 win over Northern State. The jaw-dropper was at 157 where Tanner Olson, who was just 2-3 on the season coming in, beat No. 1-ranked Larry Bomstad of St. Cloud State 3-1. To try to put that in perspective -- it's like a guy from say, Cleveland State beating Bryce Meredith or something like that. No, Bomstad isn't a national champion, but he's been an All-American. So tip of the cap to the Wolves' Tanner Olsen. You know what, this isn't intentional, but Olsen … is from Wyoming. Keeping with the Northern Sun, Augustana - the one in South Dakota - upended Minnesota State 17-13, while Upper Iowa topped Southwest Minnesota State 25-13. Out west in Division II, Colorado School of Mines, yes, we've been over this, they're the Orediggers, well, they beat New Mexico Highlands 22-18. That action taking place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Also out there, Cal Baptist topped Colorado Mesa 36-9. This is the last year Cal Baptist is eligible to compete in Division II. The school announced it was moving to Division I last year. In Division III, fifth-ranked Loras tied a school record with its 16th dual meet win of the season. The Duhawks are 16-0 and topped Cornell College 27-9. Things weren't all sunshine and Tony Ramos for Loras as second-ranked Jimmy Davis was upended by Cornell's Phillip Opelt at 149 pounds. Both are returning All-Americans, but Opelt scored two and two late to pick up the win. Oneonta State beat King's College - that's KING'S with an apostrophe and an S, not King, 49-3. King's College is on just its second coach in school history. Previous coach Ned McGinley stepped down after last season after coaching at the Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania school for nearly 50 years. Gettysburg beat McDaniel 30-7 in Centennial Conference action. Tip of the cap to Andy Vogel, who also runs D3wrestle.com. In the NAIA, Southeastern beat Campbellsville 21-18 in a Mid-South Conference matchup, while Wayland Baptist beat Missouri Baptist and I'm going to assume they also beat Bacone, but since neither school had reported their scores by MIDNIGHT, I can't really report the men's side of things. Wayland Baptist's women DID officially beat both Missouri Baptist and Bacone in a double triple event in Muskogee. It was two tri meets held simultaneously in men's and women's wrestling. One JUCO score to pass along, North Idaho topped Division II Simon Fraser 31-15. There’s been a lot of talk about shifting weights this week and of course, on Thursday night, the action in Brookings, South Dakota did not disappoint as No. 15 South Dakota State beat No. 22 Wyoming 20-18 in Big 12 action. Wait, the dual meet? What are you talking about? We’ll talk about all that and more on Short Time Shots, a look back at the day’s wrestling scores and more, I’m Hall of Fame broadcaster, announcer and writer Jason Bryant. Caution - NAME DROPPING AHEAD. So by now most of you know Wyoming’s Bryce Meredith, the top-ranked 141-pounder by Flowrestling met up with South Dakota State’s Seth Gross, the top-ranked 133-pounder by everyone. What started as some Twitter talk quickly escalated into a match that caused wrestling historians, including myself, to pore through old results to find out the last time this happened. So before we get into the history, Meredith, an NCAA runner-up two seasons ago, topped Gross, an NCAA runner-up last season 4-2, scoring midway through the third period to break a 1-1 tie. He tacked on a riding time point to make it 4-2, but when you look at what this was, it was much more than a 4-2 win. Giving promotional credit where credit is due -- Flowrestling, which has the rights to stream all of South Dakota State’s home duals -- jumped all over this and rightly so. On Flowrestling Radio Live on Thursday morning, they brought on Jackrabbits coach Chris Bono to explain the situation and why he bought in. Bono, who also had the buy in from Wyoming coach Mark Branch, and Flo, played this one perfectly. It’s like catching lightning in a bottle -- build up, the right amount of hype and a great match to finish. We need more opportunities to showcase the individual matchups we have in dual meets like this. The only thing lost at the end of the dual was who won, considering Wyoming still had a chance to win the match in the last weight. So, December 18, 1998 - Eric Guerrero handed Stephen Abas a 5-3 loss. What exactly was the situation there? Let me run to the stacks and tell you, from the pages of Amateur Wrestling News. Abas was ranked 2nd in the country behind Oklahoma State Cowboy Teague Moore. So what we could have had was No. 1 vs. No. 2 at 125, but instead, we had No. 1 at 133 vs. No. 2 at 125. But would we? NO! You see, Teague wasn’t in the lineup that weekend for Oklahoma State and it would be future All-American Jeff Ragan getting the call. So does Stephen Abas go to work on a then-unheralded underclassmen or does he bump up and face another Californian. It went 5-3 in Guerrero’s favor. Shifting our attention to Division II No. 10 Upper Iowa improved to 6-3 with a 30-7 win over MSU Moorhead, that in the Northern Sun Conference. At 174, Jordan Gundrum picked off eighth-ranked Adam Blees to highlight the Peacocks victory. Wins by Isaac Lopez, Richard Bencomo and Tuli Laulu sealed the victory for coach Jason Ramstetter’s Adams State Grizzlies as they beat New Mexico Highlands 25-16. Closer to home, Augustana -- University -- the one in South Dakota -- picked up a 27-9 Northern Sun victory over Southwest Minnesota State. Record another fall for Aero Amo at 184 pounds from Augustana. This guy has been around forever it seems. Fresh off a championship at the Virginia Duals, King University returned to its winning ways with a 26-21 win over Coker in ECAC South action. It was a 5-5 split, and even without nationally ranked 133-pounder Dustin Kirk, the Tornado were just fine. Geography note, as offered by Julia Salata. If you’re catching a trucker out of Philly, he probably had a nice long toke, because you don’t head west through the Cumberland Gap to get to Johnson City, Tennessee. Don’t believe me? Google Map it. Speaking of Moorhead, we’ll go to Division III, where top-ranked Augsburg headed West on I-94 and stopped just short of the North Dakota line, but they didn’t stop short of a win. The Auggies didn’t Fear the Ear, instead, they’d win the four of the first five matches via bonus and beat Concordia -- the one in Moorhead -- 36-6. On the mic out in Moorhead, PA announcer Brian Doucette. No. 8 UW-Whitewater beat No. 12 UW-La Crosse 19-15. The big Warhawk win came at 125 pounds where Mike Tortorice knocked off super freshman Zach Villareal 8-0. At 197, returning national champion Jordan Newman iced the victory with a 7-4 win over Wesley Schultz. Wabash jumped out to a big lead and cruised past Millikin 25-15. The Little Giants -- yes, we haven’t had too many Little Giants references this year -- had five of their six wins via bonus, including a fall at 157 from Kyle Hatch. Millikin also shut out MacMurray 48-0. UW-Oshkosh topped MSOE -- that’s the Milwaukee School of Engineering 36-10. In addition to name-dropping the Concordia announcer, I’ll do the same for the Titans former announcer Casey Nelson, who like me, was an applicant for the Timberwolves gig a few months ago. Up in the mitten (that’s Michigan in case you’re wondering), Olivet picked up five bonus victories including technical falls from Tyler Grimsley at 165 and Ryan Clark at 184 to beat Adrian 27-19. Big news also came out of Michigan this week as the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association announced it would be sponsoring men’s wrestling as a conference sport starting next year. That will put Olivet, Adrian, Alma and Trine -- which isn’t in Michigan, but it’s in the conference -- as the four schools with teams. The positive there? Well, since a conference sponsors the sport, the opportunity to add new programs within is greater, so let’s keep an eye out to see if Albion, Calvin, Hope, Kalamazoo and St. Mary’s are looking to start teams in the future.
