Outdoor Research So I have a funny theory… I think most of our modern day melodies arise from the fact that we're simply indoors too much. ## There's no such thing as bad weather only bad clothing My friend Mattias L told me the infamous Swedish saying; “there's no such thing as bad weather only bad clothing”. And this is when we are in Stockholm in the dead of winter, and I still remember us being on a train terminal, him just wearing a light track jacket and trainers, not even wearing a jacket or a hat, or even winter boots. Certainly human desire fairer weather. For example, when we think in consider… Why were the ancient Greek so productive? One of the theories is that the Mediterranean climate is actually very very conducive to leisure and thinking! It does get cold, but not that cold. Not like Detroit cold.As a consequence, I think this encourages more people to be outdoors more often, which might be better for thinking, philosophizing, even military exercises? ## The secret of NapoleonOne of the things that Nietzsche talked a lot about was his admiration for Napoleon, and on describing how Napoleon was able to remain so productive healthy and strong, continual marches through the winter all year long, a life outdoors. ## spend more money on your clothes So once again… Then seems that the optimal strategy is if you want to spend maximum time outdoors, and train your body (askesis, body strengthening in Ancient Greek)-- to become more spendthrift with your clothing seems like a good idea. Typically the best fabrics include down, Merino Wool, alpaca, leather, -- typically animal fabrics seem to work the best. Why? If you're going to be butt naked in the middle of the winter, at night, perhaps having a mink fur is a good idea.

Sheep Inc. is a pioneering clothing brand that uses proprietary technology and supply chain innovation to deliver next generation knitwear essentials with a naturally carbon-negative footprint. Achieved by working with cutting-edge regenerative farms and supply chain partners that run on 100% solar power. Custom built supply chain technology gives real-time insight into production processes and NFC technology is integrated into each supremely soft garment. A tap of the phone shows each garment's unique digital fingerprint. Giving detailed information about the environmental impact and background about the farms and manufacturers. It even connects you with a sheep from the same farm the garment's wool is from. Sheep Inc. aims to fundamentally change how we view and purchase clothing. Delivering best-in-class products with a unique customer experience and unparalleled sustainable credentials.Co-Founders Michael and Edzard are both experienced founders and saw first hand the impact of fashion on the environment. So their journey didn't begin from a single moment but a series of realisations that the fashion industry's footprint was too heavy a burden for our planet to bear. It was the understanding that they could shift the approach and thinking. To do more, be more. Influenced by both the majestic simplicity of nature and the complex web of our global ecosystem, they were inspired to create a brand that mirrors the balance between the two.

Tune in to our latest podcast episode as Emily Riggs, the founder and creative force behind Iris and Wool, shares her inspiring journey. Emily and her husband live on a sheep property outside of Burra, South Australia. “I fell in love with my farmer and also fell in love with wool,” explains Emily. “I don't actually work hands-on on the farm. So, I thought, how can I contribute to the industry?” Out of this, Iris and Wool was born, offering 100% certified Australian Merino wool knitwear, Merino denim, and accessories. But why fashion and clothing? “I think I've always had a love for fashion. When I was a little girl, I was actually diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, which is a cancer of the lymph nodes. I knew that I was going to lose my hair,” Emily explains. “I was often mistaken for a boy. And that really shattered my confidence. It was then that I really turned to fashion. It was a way for me to express my creativity and for people to actually look beyond my illness.”Iris and Wool started as an online fashion brand, with their family home as their ‘warehouse'. They have since expanded into a brick-and-mortar store in Burra, meaning their home has gone back to being a home and their customers can now try on the clothes before buying. For every sale at Iris and Wool, $1 goes to the Childhood Cancer Association and knitted beanies are donated to recently diagnosed children in South Australia.Emily's story is a heart-warming example of how, with “...a lot of hustling”, you can turn your dreams into a reality. #IrisAndWool #FashionWithHeart #MerinoWool #PodcastHead Shepherd is brought to you by neXtgen Agri International Limited, we help livestock farmers get the most out of the genetics they farm with. Regenerative Agriculture is revolutionising Australia's agriculture industry, and for good reason. Today, The Australian River Restoration's Managing Director Siwan Lovett sits down with Australia's foremost Regenerative Agriculture pioneer, Dr. Charles Massy, to discuss his life's work, his experience implementing Regenerative Agriculture (Regen Ag) on his farm, Severn Park, and some of his recent work on the Snowy River.Dr. Charles Massy is a Monaro woolgrower, scientist, and renowned author. He is a passionate pioneer in, and expert on, regenerative agriculture and is the author of several books on the topic, including 2017's Call of the Reed Warbler, a book which explores the vital connection between our soil and our health, and The Last Dragon, a children's book about the endangered Monaro Grassland Earless Dragon, illustrated by Mandy Foot and featuring an essay on the Dragon written by Charles. Both of these books are discussed in today's episode.Charles has been farming Merino sheep at Severn Park for over 40 years and received the Order of Australia Medal for his service to the wool industry as chair and director of several research organisations and wool boards (2011). He has also been the recipient of the Sydney Power House Museum's Distinguished Service Award for his work on their Wool and Pastoral Collection (2008), and received the Australian Association of Stud Merino Breeders' Silver Medal for his contribution to the Australian Merino and wool industry (1992). We are proud to announce our new partnership with Minus33. Our guest is Lawson Glidden, President of Minus33, who shares the long history of his company and their extensive product line. Layering is key to dealing with weather changes while hunting so Lawson shares his wealth of knowledge on Merino Wool and why his products stand out from competitors.  Trying to battle the elements of Mother Nature we deal with as outdoor people can be life or death if you are not prepared. This conversation fits right into the BWB System we have created. Vital information for any outdoor person. Moose hunt - 2nd season a lot different than 1st season. Don't scout to early if you have 2nd season tag. Trail cam pics can be a curse – good indication of the moose in the area but moose might not be there when you hunt. They go on a mission just like deer do during the rut. Alder rubs with broken stubs from years past much better indicator then random rubs. Hal is a fan of running and gunning even at first light. Some old bulls just like old turkey's don't talk too much. Guide Mike says get into their living room during 2nd season before you rack or call. 2nd season seems to be better to rack brush then call in some cases. Today we discuss all things merino wool. What is it? And why you shouldn't head into the back country or next afternoon hike without it. And perhaps most importantly why you should leave the cotton and synthetics for the gym, garden, or a night on the town when you are not planning to immerse yourself in the elements for long periods of time. I also share my experience wearing merino wool during my 96 hour vision quest in freezing temperatures and how I layered this amazing fabric to stay dry and warm. Add the fact that they're producing some of the nicest merino wool socks, base layers, shirts, hats (and more) and you have a personalized experience in the quality layers you collect. We love that. Besides gushing about Minus33 (this isn't a sponsored episode - while we are affiliates, we are simply this enthusiastic about finding this brand), we share a couple of our own stories about layering failures and successes so that you can consider your own needs when heading out in varying temperatures and conditions. Learning the basics of layering is a key factor in your outdoor adventure comfort and safety - we hope this episode gives a foundation for your excursions and makes you smile as much as we did! Check out Minus33 here! (Links from here take you to our affiliates - we do get a small commission if you make a purchase at no cost additional cost to you. Thank you!) --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/keywordadventure/message

The catastrophic consequences of global climate change have gone on way too far. Meanwhile, the demand for carbon is on the rise, and it's a market that's predicted to grow There is no sign of slowing down, and if continues to be credited a number of new grant programs could benefit farmers all over the country. Proper soil carbon management can not only retain more water, but can also restore the landscape, increase your yield, and give you access to necessary resources. Let's dig deeper into this as Louisa Kiely shares with us everything we need to know about carbon farming.   Who is Louisa Kiely? Louisa, Director of  Carbon Farmers of Australia, obtained her Bachelor of Agricultural Economics from the University of New England. She worked in the market research industry as a field supervisor while bringing up her 3 children. Together with her husband Michael, in 1991-2003 Louisa established and grew a city-based marketing agency from zero to 55 employees. In this business, she was Director and General Manager of Boomerang! Integrated Marketing & Advertising. Intent on following her first choice of career, she studied for the Advanced Diploma of Farm Management at Sydney University (Orange), trained in Holistic Management, and from 1998 to 2017 she was a woolgrower in the Wellington NSW district, growing fine Merino Wool. She was selected by the Central Western Catchment Management Authority as one of 10 highly innovative landholders in the Catchment, to be trained in farm planning and soil restoration. Through this training, she and Michael became convinced that soil carbon could solve many agricultural, environmental, and climate change problems. She co-founded the Carbon Coalition Against Global Warming in February 2006 to lobby for the right of Australian landholders to trade on the emissions offset market the credits they can earn by sequestering carbon in their soils. She has since traveled throughout Australia and internationally meeting scientists and farmers and spreading the word about Carbon Farming. She was invited to be a delegate at a Climate Change and Conservation Farming Conference in LaFayette, Indiana, organised by the UN Food & Agriculture Organisation. She was also a delegate at the National Carbon Offset Coalition Conference in Bozeman, Montana. She is co-founder of Carbon Farmers of Australia Pty Ltd (CFA). CFA also published the world's first Carbon Farming Handbook. Seeking to build bridges with the scientific community, she organised two Soil C Summits between Scientists and Farmers, in Dubbo and Orange NSW. And as co-founder of CFA, she organised and ran the world's first Carbon Farming Conference & Expo in November 2007. In 2019 the 9th National Carbon Farming Conference & Expo, the biggest yet with delegates from every state in Australia and from all over the world, was held. She developed the “CarbonCredited™” brand for wool and recruited woolgrowers into this emissions reduction program. Louisa has been recognized for her work and was chosen as runner up in the 2008 NSW Rural Woman of the Year. She has also sat on the board of the Regional Development Australia Committee – Orana Region. This intergovernmental committee was set up to ensure the future strength and development in rural and regional Australia. As director of Carbon Farmers of Australia Pty Ltd, she was a part of a consortium of 3 companies that developed the first Soil Carbon Methodology submitted to the Carbon Farming Initiative process. Carbon Farmers of Australia also offers farm-ready training in Carbon Farming and Trading. ---------- Website: https://carbonfarmersofaustralia.com.au/   Dig Deeper Club: https://soillearningcenter.com/digdeeper See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Betsy Seabert, Founder and Inventor of Chill Angel, had a “light bulb moment that Merino wool, made into sleepwear, could help thousands of women who suffer from hot flashes sleep through the night.” At the time, Seabert was experiencing the loss of her 30-year-old son. At the same time, she was also battling breast cancer. Seabert says that she was, “hardly getting any sleep. “The estrogen blocker the doctors gave me caused hot flashes and sweats that were uncontrollable” leaving Seabert “… desperate for a solution.” She was “waking up every hour in sweat and not being able to get any sleep whatsoever.” It was then that Seabert thought about turning Merino wool into sleepwear. In this podcast, Seabert shares with the listeners her 25 year background in the outdoor apparel industry and her extensive knowledge in high performance, temperature balancing fibers.   Seabert explains the science behind Merino wool and sites studies that have been done to prove that Merino wool is a natural temperature balancing fiber. Seabert describes her product as a “new technology to sleepwear” and has designed woman's pajamas using, what Seabert calls, “a natural miracle fiber, Merino wool.” For more information about Chill Angel or to purchase sleepwear, yoga apparel or lounge wear, please visit Chill Angel

Becoming a Better Leader Interviews

IntroductionJonas Sanders opened his merino wool only shop in May 2016 under the name Wollmeister Berlin. In his shop, Jonas is only selling a small number of merino wool fashion brands. With his long experience in retail, Jonas takes care to offer brands that not only perform well but also look stylish. In this Wool Academy podcast episode, Jonas talks about how he came up with the idea to start his merino wool only shop after a visit to New Zealand. He also shares insights about his customers and how he creates new wool fans one by one. About Jonas SandersComing from a long line of textile engineers, Jonas has inherited an interest in quality and comfort in fabrics. After his postgraduate studies as sports specialist, Jonas managed for over ten years different fashion and outdoor shops. This experience allowed Jonas to study the advantages and disadvantages of synthetic materials. At the same time, he began to discover the versatility of wool. After a visit to merino wool brands in New Zealand, Jonas decided to launch the first merino concept store in Berlin under the name Wollmeister. In his shop, Jonas is selling clothes exclusively made of merino wool - not just for sports, but also for every other occasion. Jonas takes care to select the most interesting and stylish products from a variety of labels such as Formal Friday, Funktion+Schnitt, Mons Royale, Pally Hi, Finisterre, Houdini and many more. All of the brands he sells use mulesing-free wool and most labels manufacture in Europe. In 2017 Wollmeister Berlin celebrated its first anniversary.
