(00:35) Op Reportage met Saskia Dekkers In onze winterserie 'Op Reportage' voeren we gesprekken met correspondenten over het werk en het leven áchter de reportage. Want werken in internationale contexten en onder hoge druk, zorgt voor sterke verhalen over het werk. Vandaag is Saskia Dekkers te gast. Voor Nieuwsuur reist zij heel Europa door, op zoek naar de verhalen die er echt toe doen. Als 'correspondent van 35 landen' komt ze telkens weer voor nieuwe uitdagingen te staan. Zo zijn er grenzen die eigenlijk dicht zijn, maar die zij toch weet te passeren. Of taalbarrières die lastig te dichten zijn. Uiteindelijk staat alles in het teken van het vertellen van het verhaal. Hoe moeten we zijn ideeën nu zien? Zijn ze achterhaald of inmiddels weer actueel geworden? Dekkers schreef een artikel over Malthus in het Historisch Nieuwsblad en is te gast. Lara Billie Rense praat in Wat blijft met biograaf Koen Vossen over avonturier, journalist en oorlogscorrespondent Jan Fabius.  Hij was getuige van de Balkanoorlog, bezocht hij de loopgraven van de Eerste Wereldoorlog, kwam hij na een verhoor door Stalin in een Russische cel en overleefde hij ternauwernood de Japanse bombardementen op Shanghai.  Na 1945 begon hij met zijn eigen weekblad een eenmansguerrilla tegen het establishment. Als overtuigd imperialist en nationalist kon hij het verlies van Nederlands-Indië moeilijk verkroppen. In 1956 belandde hij in de gevangenis nadat hij als een van de eersten had bericht over de invloed van gebedsgenezeres Greet Hofmans op Paleis Soestdijk. Jullie moesten er even op wachten, maar er staat weer een aflevering online! En dat is ook al weer de laatste van het jaar. En met wie kunnen we dit ongelooflijk jaar beter afsluiten dan met Saskia Dekkers! Ze reisde voor Nieuwsuur heel Europa én daarbuiten af, langs alle brandhaarden die dit jaar speelden. En dat waren er een hoop. Zo ging ze naar de de Tunesische kust, waar migranten met gevaar voor eigen leven de oversteek naar Europa waagden. Ze trok de Franse banlieues in, waar eerder dit jaar enorme rellen waren. En ze volgde de Poolse verkiezingen op de voet, die verassend werden gewonnen door de oppositie. Samen met haar bespreken we de meest belangrijke verhalen van dit jaar. En we vroegen jullie natuurlijk of er ook nog lichtpuntjes waren in dit overwegend sombere jaar. Muziek doorkrijgen van Liszt en Brahms, het is bijna niemand gegund. Bijna, want de Britse Rosemary Brown wel. Tussen het koken, de kinderen naar school brengen en soapseries kijken door, componeerde ze muziek die haar werd opgedragen door grootse musici uit het verleden. Waarom wist ze niet en de waardering bleef helaas ook uit. Vrouwkje Tuinman maakte een podcast over haar. Ze gaat erover in gesprek met Annette van Soest. Maar hoewel fotograferen haar gelukkig maakte, besloot ze in 2004 de kunstwereld de rug toe te keren. A major bombshell in the sports-betting investigation affecting Iowa State and Iowa dropped this week, with Cyclones quarterback Hunter Dekkers right in the middle of it. All told, three current Iowa State athletes and one former one have been charged in the probe that's spanned several months. Three of those names, including Dekkers, are or were Iowa State football players who are accused of betting on their own games. 

This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette Digital News Desk, and I'm here with your update for Wednesday, August 2.According to the National Weather Service it will be mostly cloudy in the Cedar Rapids area Wednesday with a high near 85 degrees. There will be a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms overnight into Thursday.Three Iowa State student-athletes and one former athlete were charged Tuesday with tampering with records, a result of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation's inquiry into sports gambling.The Story County Attorney's Office filed criminal complaints against ISU quarterback Hunter Dekkers, wrestler Paniro Johnson, offense lineman Dodge Sauser and former ISU defensive lineman Eyioma Uwazurike. Tampering with records is an aggravated misdemeanor.The current and former student-athletes are accused of engaging in schemes with other people to disguise their identities and “manipulate online/mobile transactions in order to create the appearance” that their sports wagers were being conducted by other people.The criminal complaint against Dekkers, who started all 12 games for the Cyclones last season, alleges that he placed wagers on approximately 26 Cyclone sporting events, including a 2021 football game against Oklahoma State when he was a sophomore backup quarterback. He did not play in that game.In addition to facing criminal penalties, Dekkers, Johnson and Sauser could lose all of their remaining eligibility because of NCAA rules that bar student-athletes from betting on their own games or any other sports at an individual's own institution.A police lieutenant testified Tuesday that the mother of a man charged with attempting to rob and kill a woman last year on the University of Iowa campus helped sell the family vehicle before taking her son to a Chicago airport to skip the country — a week before his trial was set to start in Johnson County.UI police Lt. Travis Tyrrell said police were alerted that the GPS ankle monitor of Ali Younes, 20, had been cut May 6, 2022, in Northwest Iowa's O'Brien County. He lived there with his parents, Lima Younes, who is on trial this week, and Alfred Younes, charged separately in the case.Lima Younes is charged with escape from custody, a felony. She is accused of aiding and abetting her son to intentionally escape the GPS-monitored house arrest. If convicted, she faces up to five years in prison. The trial is expected to last all week.According to a criminal complaint, Ali Younes on April 25, 2022, followed a woman on foot, tackled her near the UI Art Building West, strangled her until she lost consciousness and stole her earrings valued at $20,000. He was facing trial on attempted murder, first-degree robbery and first-degree theft charges.Ali Younes remains a fugitive because Jordan doesn't have an extradition treaty with the United States. Tyrrell, under cross exam, said he was allowed to live in Sutherland with an ankle monitor while on house arrest.

Unfortunately, a concomitant steady rise in sow mortality. One of the major reasons for sow mortality is pelvic organ prolapse (otherwise known as POP).Joining us today to talk about some recent research findings related to POP are Dr. Jack Dekkers of Iowa State University and Vishesh Bhatia, a Ph.D. student of Dekkers. They along with Dr. Jason Ross, also of Iowa State University, investigated the genetic basis of uterine prolapse with the assistance of Topigs Norsvin.
