Normaal gezien maakt men de soundtrack na de tekst. Men onderstreept de emoties en de spanning en men probeert deervaring van de luisteraar te sturen. Maar deze keer draaide ik dat om. Ik liet Harold Pflug een score maken en vroeg vier auteurs om op die score een verhaal te schrijven. Ik probeerde zo de ervaring van de schrijver een bepaalde kant op te sturen. Het is aan de luisteraar om te bepalen of dat gelukt is, maar ik kan vast verklappen dat het antwoord ‘hell yeah' is. Vier volledig verschillende verhalen op 1 stuk muziek geschreven, en door de auteurs voorgelezen. Een ontdekkingstocht in audio met verrassende pleisterplaatsen en ankerpunten. Want werken in internationale contexten en onder hoge druk, zorgt voor sterke verhalen over het werk. Vandaag is Saskia Dekkers te gast. Voor Nieuwsuur reist zij heel Europa door, op zoek naar de verhalen die er echt toe doen. Als 'correspondent van 35 landen' komt ze telkens weer voor nieuwe uitdagingen te staan. De nieuwe documentaire Over bevolking (VPRO) onderzoekt waarom en kijkt naar de gevolgen van de snelle bevolkingsgroei. Dit is niet de eerste keer dat deze gevolgen aan de kaak worden gesteld, weet historicus Geertje Dekkers. Al rond 1800 waarschuwde de Brit Robert Malthus voor overbevolking. Hoe moeten we zijn ideeën nu zien? Zijn ze achterhaald of inmiddels weer actueel geworden? Dekkers schreef een artikel over Malthus in het Historisch Nieuwsblad en is te gast. Lara Billie Rense praat in Wat blijft met biograaf Koen Vossen over avonturier, journalist en oorlogscorrespondent Jan Fabius.  Hij was getuige van de Balkanoorlog, bezocht hij de loopgraven van de Eerste Wereldoorlog, kwam hij na een verhoor door Stalin in een Russische cel en overleefde hij ternauwernood de Japanse bombardementen op Shanghai.  Na 1945 begon hij met zijn eigen weekblad een eenmansguerrilla tegen het establishment. Als overtuigd imperialist en nationalist kon hij het verlies van Nederlands-Indië moeilijk verkroppen. In 1956 belandde hij in de gevangenis nadat hij als een van de eersten had bericht over de invloed van gebedsgenezeres Greet Hofmans op Paleis Soestdijk. In zijn boek met de veelzeggende titel Groter dan het leven, De roekeloze avonturen van Jan Fabius belicht Vossen het opmerkelijke leven van deze onalledaagse journalist en activist. Jullie moesten er even op wachten, maar er staat weer een aflevering online! En dat is ook al weer de laatste van het jaar. En met wie kunnen we dit ongelooflijk jaar beter afsluiten dan met Saskia Dekkers! Ze reisde voor Nieuwsuur heel Europa én daarbuiten af, langs alle brandhaarden die dit jaar speelden. En dat waren er een hoop. Zo ging ze naar de de Tunesische kust, waar migranten met gevaar voor eigen leven de oversteek naar Europa waagden. Ze trok de Franse banlieues in, waar eerder dit jaar enorme rellen waren. En ze volgde de Poolse verkiezingen op de voet, die verassend werden gewonnen door de oppositie. Samen met haar bespreken we de meest belangrijke verhalen van dit jaar. En we vroegen jullie natuurlijk of er ook nog lichtpuntjes waren in dit overwegend sombere jaar. En we hebben een hoop tips gekregen!

Bij het werken aan de Stad van de Toekomst knelt de traditionele aanpak van mobiliteit en verkeersinfrastructuur. De laatste jaren worden makers van mobiliteitsbeleid dan ook geconfronteerd met een enorme verbreding van vraagstukken waar zij rekening mee moeten houden. De (gezonde) bodem, de fysieke netwerken, de vitale stad en de (circulaire) economie, een samenhangende structuur in die vier lagen levert uiteindelijk de wijk van de toekomst. Hoe gaan we zorgen dat dat allemaal goed gaat functioneren? Wat gaan we doen met het verkeer? Waarom maken wij nog mobiliteitsplannen separaat? We kunnen niet langer beginnen bij mobiliteit die op zichzelf staat, maar moeten beginnen bij die waaier aan vraagstukken die allemaal terechtkomen in de stad, bijna letterlijk in de straat.   In een korte serie van vier podcasten komen vier vakmensen aan het woord, die ieder vanuit hun eigen perspectief systeemdenken verbinden aan praktische oplossingen.
