This week on Episode 517 of Priority One: The virtual becomes reality on the set of Discovery Season 4, meanwhile the Disco captains reflect on their past and future in the center seat on the bridge. In gaming news, Pahvo is under attack on the ground and orbit in the third Event Eampaign installment in Star Trek Online, and Dr. Robert Hurt shares the importance of the Hubble Telescope's return! TREK IT OUT Edited by Thomas Reynolds Is This The Real Life? Is this Discovery? By Elio Lleo When that other “Star” franchise debuted their own serialized, live-action TV series on Disney+, critics not only raved about its story, but also about its cinematography. The Mandalorian, which started streaming in 2019, showcased a new style of filmmaking that was absolutely breathtaking. You see, instead of having to find locations where to shoot, the production used a 360-degree LED wall to project–in real time–all the landscapes and effects needed for the scene. The end result: a creative and astonishing backdrop that really helped build that world. Now, everyone wants in! Not only does this technology save the time and resources it takes to shoot on location but, combined with the Unreal Engine, actors can actually see and react to visual effect environments in real time. Now we can visit Strange New Worlds with much more ease, as Noah Kadner explains in his article for American Cinematographer. According to Kadner, Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 and the first season of Strange New Worlds have been filming with a 270-degree horseshoe-shaped LED wall by a company called Pixomondo–which can be fed real-time animations using Unreal Engine. Gul Madred's cruelest torture to date: do the virtual lights count? Image: Michael Gibson/Paramount Plus, via American Cinematographer. Star Trek's Lead Visual Effects Supervisor Jason Zimmerman told Kadner “getting something in-camera on the day is so much better than greenscreen in many ways. One major difference [in terms of workflow] is that the production-design and art departments are a lot more involved much earlier in the process, because they have to get assets ready to be photographed instead of waiting until after the shoot.” But the away teams from Strange New Worlds will be beaming down to realistic landscapes–the New Mexico Film Office announced this week that the television series is using New Mexico landscapes for the show's visual effects. Jamming With Captain Burnham By Rosco McQueen Michael Burnam meets Bugs Bunny–is this a crossover episode? No, Sonequa Martin-Green plays Lebron James' wife in the Space Jam sequel, and right now Martin-Green is on the promo circuit talking about the animated adventure. But the good folks at Collider and Gizmodo couldn't help but ask some questions about Discovery Season 4 and what the future holds for Captain Burnham. Kamiyah, When LeBron Dunked. Image: Warner Brothers, via Collider. According to Martin-Green, filming for Season 4 is almost complete with only a little bit left to shoot. She emphasized the importance of cementing her new position as Captain, particularly the importance of having a black woman in the role. But she was tight lipped on what's to come, telling Gizmodo it's going to be about finding out who she is as Captain Michael Burnham, “[b]ecause there's always been this question of who am I in this moment? Who am I in this role? And now I'm going to have to answer those questions for myself as Captain because everything is different now. And we've got a huge threat coming our way.” The Rubber Meets The Wormhole By Rosco McQueen Meanwhile, Doug Jones reflected on Captain Saru and his journey through Season 3 of Discovery. Jones sat in the Captain's chair for almost its entirety, something Jones believes was a dream of the character but not necessarily the actor–it meant a lot more time in the makeup chair. “I was on more days on Season 3 than ever before. But the honor and the gravity of it was not lost on me that put me in a very small handful of actors who have played Captains in Star Trek. And even a bigger honor that I was the first non-human alien creature to take a Captaincy of a title ship. That was a really a big deal for me, especially as a geeky boy who has played a lot of rubber animals and creatures over these years.” Just keep working on that tagline. Image: ViacomCBS, via Decider. Jones goes on to talk about adding new cast members to the series, particularly his joy at working with Bill Irwin who played Su'Kal, as each actor has been a fan of the other for a long time. Season 4 of discovery was filmed under COVID restrictions, and thanks to a few stops and starts has taken a few extra months to film than previous seasons. However Jones doesn't see the measures as restrictive. “I think that's what Star Trek helps us realize, that the situation can be different if you perceive it differently. So you can look at it as restrictions, or you can look at it as enablement. I'm going to look at this as it's enabling us to get the job done, and to stay employed, and to keep the production running.” Would You Just Give LeVar The Host Position Already By Cat Hough We will finally get to see LeVar Burton take his turn in the guest host role on Jeopardy! next week. And, many of his friends, including Brent Spiner and Gates McFadden have continued lobbying efforts to get him that full-time gig. McFadden told showbizjunkies.com, “I think he would be superb. I think he is born to do it. He's perfect.” Spiner added, “I can't think of anyone more qualified than he is. LeVar has proven himself as a host, an educator, a personality, and this and that. He's a very smart guy with a really great personality, which I think is key for the job. He's got all of the qualities.” You definitely should Trek out the full article because it recaps both of their careers. They tell us their favorite TNG director and give us an update on their latest ventures. As we previously reported on this very podcast, McFadden is currently hosting the podcast Gates McFadden InvestiGates: Who Do You Think You Are?, while Spiner, who we will see in the second season of Picard–has written a novel called Fan-Fiction: A Mem-Noir: Inspired by True Events. Don't forget to watch Jeopardy! next week! Kenneth Mitchell: To Boldly Go By Elio Lleo Image: StarTrek.com Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 is coming to Blu-Ray with several special features and StarTrek.com showcased one last week. Dedicated to Kenneth Mitchell, the featurette showcases Mitchell's various roles on these latest iterations of Trek and of course, addresses his ALS diagnosis. It is an incredibly moving segment with commentary from his fellow actors and crewmates. STAR TREK GAMING NEWS Edited by Thomas Reynolds Pahvo Pops Off By Cat Hough Just earlier today, Star Trek Online released details on the third installment of the Event Campaign, where players can participate in a series of campaigns to earn the grand prize. The Defense of Pahvo Event starts July 27th on PC and will run for 3 weeks before concluding. Xbox One and PlayStation 4 players will be able to participate starting in September. Once the Campaign starts, players will be able to earn their Daily Progress once every 20 hours by completing either the ground TFO “Pahvo Dissension,” or its space-based counterpart, “Peril Over Pahvo." As with previous Events, players can still use their old Event tokens to apply toward this Event. Brutal, savage, unprincipled, uncivilized, treacherous, but snazzy dressers. Image: Cryptic Studios. A few minor adjustments have been made to each TFO: Each completion will reward a Choice of All Marks (replacing the usual Mark rewards) Both TFOs have had their Cooldown Timers temporarily disabled Both TFOs have been temporarily removed from Random TFO eligibility For this specific event, once you earn a total of 14 days' worth of Daily Progress, you can claim the Crystal Prism Universal Console for your entire account. This unique console features a charge-driven design, allowing for rapid creation of multiple energy-conductive prisms in space. This console emulates the popular Kit Module of the same name, allowing players to build networks of damage-dealing crystal prisms in formations of their own choosing. Everyone thought Skynet would turn against us, when it was really Starlink. Image: Cryptic Studios. Each Prism that is placed in space will automatically attack nearby enemy starships, inflicting Psychic damage upon their crews, and tearing apart their hulls with telekinetic energies. The damage inflicted by each Prism in a connected group is increased based on the number of other networked Prisms, allowing for an incredibly high ceiling on such a cluster's overall potential for rending into their foes. Other rewards include the now-standard 25,000 dilithium ore and three Featured TFO Reward Boxes (choice of 1x Specialization Point or an Enhanced Universal Tech Upgrade) for a single character. ASTROMETRICS REPORT By Dr. Robert Hurt For this week's Astrometrics Report, we will stare into the heart of a swirling beam of energy generated by a supermassive hole in the nearby galaxy. But first, I had to mention the good news---that NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has been successfully resuscitated, after a system failure back on June 13th. The issues arose due to a connection fault between its power control unit and payload computer. Finding a way to bypass the malfunctioning system was not trivial. While on Star Trek, that usually takes about two strained metaphors and three minutes of typing, for NASA that required over four weeks of painstakingly careful labor (but fortunately no problematic metaphors). Hubble jumped back into its science program on July 17th, and released some of its post-recovery data this week of some beautifully-twisted galaxies. High fives all around! Deployed in 1990 by Discovery, appropriately enough. Image: NASA/Smithsonian Institution/Lockheed Corporation. Of course, Hubble is only one of a fleet of critical telescopes that operate both in space and on the ground. This week we got to see three different views into the heart of a nearby galaxy: one only possible with a planetary-scale telescope array. I speak of the Event Horizon Telescope (or EHT for short) an international collaboration combines the power of many radio telescopes scattered across the planet. Synchronizing their data collection, they can create some of the highest-resolution images ever made of the universe. You probably have already seen the historic image of the black hole at the heart of the M87 galaxy---or at least the materials swirling around its Solar System-scale event horizon. This week, the collaboration has released a new radio image of the center of another galaxy: Centaurus A. This time, the focus is not on the black hole, but the incredible jets of high-energy particles that are being flung away at nearly the speed of light from the region around the black hole. We've known about the powerful jets emanating from the hearts of some galaxies for decades. In fact, these jets provided some of the early evidence that supermassive black holes lie at the centers of galaxies. As material collects into a disk around the black hole, it rotates really quickly and gets heated to incredible temperatures. We expect that much of this material flows into the black hole over time, adding to its mass. [...yeah, I got nothing.---Ed.] Image: Radboud Univ. Nijmegen; CSIRO/ATNF/I. Feain et al., R. Morganti et al., N. Junkes et al.; ESO/WFI; MPIfR/ESO/APEX/A. Weiß et al.; NASA/CXC/CfA/R. Kraft et al.; TANAMI/C. Müller et al.; EHT/M. Janßen et al.. But some of these hot electrons and protons get swept up along spiraling magnetic fields, get ejected from the disk before reaching the black hole. Think of these like beads on a string: as you whip the string back and forth, the beads can accelerate and pop off the end, moving at high velocities. The exact mechanisms behind these high-energy, near-light speed jets of accelerated plasma are not well understood. That is, in part, in due to the fact that we have never been able to see these jets up close in enough detail to unravel their structure. That is, until now. The new EHT image unveils the structure of this jet all the way down to its base, revealing a tube-like shape that lights up brightest along the outer edges. It shows details down to scales of a few light-hours across, essentially resolving features as small as our Solar System---but from a distance of over 10 million light-years away. The black hole at the base of this jet is about 55 million times as massive as our sun, which makes it a bit smaller than the one imaged in M87---which is a few billion times the sun's mass---but still much larger than the one at the heart of our Milky Way, which is only a few million solar masses. Image: Janssen, M., Falcke, H., Kadler, M. et al. Event Horizon Telescope observations of the jet launching and collimation in Centaurus A. Nat Astron (2021). https://doi.org/10.1038/s41550-021-01417-w Make sure to check out the groundbreaking image of the Centaurus A jet---but even better, I wanted to let you know about a fun chance to try your hand at making your own astronomical image by participating in NASA's Astrophoto Challenges. The Summer 2021 event will be running through August 16th, and the subject is the M87 Galaxy. You can pick between real datasets from telescopes in space and on the ground, or even have a robotic observatory take a picture just for you. (Full disclosure: I am part of the team that develops these challenges, so I'd be thankful if you'd check it out. Just Google NASA's Astrophoto Challenges, or look for our Ask the Astronomers episode about it on YouTube.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IC30EJYMgaQ

This week on Priority One --- We trek out the end of CBS ALL ACCESS, Lower Decks place in the Trek mythos, another possible Kirk recasting, and Intakes! In Star Trek Gaming, Star Trek Online once again teams with Groupees to support the Pop Culture Hero Coalition, more updates to the “Year of Klingon”, and we protect Pahvo in our newest event. Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we’ll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Questions Are: CQ: CQ: Do you believe the rumor that James Cannavale will be the next Kirk? Do you like the casting, or is there someone else you’d prefer? AND CQ: What did you think of the Khitomer map updates shared by Star Trek Online? TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan ViacomCBS Rebranding The end of CBS ALL ACCESS is near! But not really. But kind of. But...let’s get to the story! On Thursday, ViacomCBS CEO Bob Bakish told investors there would be big changes to the companies Over the Top VOD service - CBS ALL ACCESS - starting with a rebranding of the subscription based service. So see, it’s sort of the end. But not really - Anyway. Bakish said “major changes coming this summer as we track toward the rebrand and relaunch of a transformed product.”. In addition to the 100 plus movie titles added to the service on Thursday - including Star Trek IV, Generations, First Contact, and Nemesis - All Access programming chief Julie McNamara said in a press release “Expanding CBS All Access’ library of films with these iconic titles from Paramount Pictures is just one of the many ways we’re integrating the phenomenal catalog of IP available to us within the ViacomCBS family” But movies aren’t the only changes coming to the soon-to-be-artist-formally-known-as-CBS ALL ACCESS. ViacomCBS promises to leverage several of its broadcast properties on the service as well, including Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central, BET, Smithsonian, and Paramount Network. Bar Rescue 24-7! No firm details were given about release date or price changes, but we’ll be keeping our sensors set to full. Stay tuned! Lower Decks is On-Track For it’s Unannounced Premiere Mike McMahon is a busy man. This week, the former Rick and Morty showrunner launched a new animated series on Hulu - Solar Opposites - and sat down with Inverse to promote the show. During the interview, McMahon spoke a bit about his next project, Star Trek: Lower Decks. McMahon gave the vaguest of vague answers when talking about the shows release, saying “I can't give you a specific answer on when that's coming out, but we’re still working on it and we're on track for when we have planned, which is this year”.. The TNG Season 8 creator did open up a bit about where the show fits in the mythos, though, saying “It was important to me that if you know everything about Star Trek and you watch this show then it fits into Canon and doesn't break Star Trek. In fact, it grows it. And if you know nothing about Star Trek, then all of the canon in Lower Decks feels like mythological, broad understandable sci-fi stuff. So you can still enjoy Lower Decks even if it's your first Star Trek show.” Kirk in the Rumored Star Trek: Pike? Any and every entertainment gossip site has claimed to “break the story” of an upcoming Star Trek: Pike series, but this week a new - and interesting - rumor has expanded on this story. So… like last week’s discussion about potential acquisitions… this is another headline to take with a grain of salt! Gossip cinema site - The Cinema Spot - claims to have exclusive insider information that the unannounced upcoming Pike series has started casting - wait for it - James Tiberius Kirk. According to the site “CBS All Access is eyeing multiple actors, but sources close to CBS have informed us that the streaming service is very keen on casting Jake Cannavale for the role. He recently held a screentest with Star Trek: Discovery Spock actor Ethan Peck, through Skype”. Through Skype? Really? Skype? Not to be outdone, “We Got This Covered” - which has a long and spotty scoop history - claimed another TOS character was also being recast “we’ve now heard from our sources – the same ones who told us about the Pike spinoff initially and that Discovery has been renewed for five seasons, which has also been confirmed – that Uhura will also feature in the series. We don’t know whether the producers have any actresses in mind for the role yet, but the character will definitely appear on the show.” Star Trek’s Intakes Star Trek fans are a creative bunch. From fanfic to podcast - and everything in between - we sure put our passion to good use. One of those industrious fans, youtube Ryan’s Edits, has taken Star Trek outtakes and put them back into the episode - and it’s even better than it sounds. From Future Imperfect’s high-fives to Guinan’s...unique advice about the holodeck, these bite-sized trek nuggets are a fun distraction. Trekmovie.com has the newest videos imbedded, so follow our link for easy viewing! Star Trek Online and Gaming News by Shane Hoover Groupees Fundraiser Star Trek Online has once again invited players to join in their effort to raise funds for two worthy causes. Along with fellow Cryptic games property Neverwinter, STO has announced several new Groupees bundles for purchase. At the first tier, for just $2.00, players can claim a Heroic Risian Caracal Pet, a Heroic Tribble, and a new player title, Heroic. At the $10 tier, players can claim two T6 ships, the Federation’s Somerville Intel Science Vessel and the KDF’s Batlh Intel Science Vessel, along with 1 Fleet Module. Buyers of the higher tier will also automatically receive the items from Tier 1. Proceeds from the fundraising will be evenly divided between the United Way Bay Area and Chase Masterson’s Pop Culture Hero Coalition. Latest Year of Klingon Updates This week brought us several new insights into the upcoming Klingon content refresh. On the weekly #StovokorSaturday social media post, Ambassador Kael shared a peek at two updated Klingon ship models. One was the B’rel Bird of Prey we were already expecting, and the other was a new model for the K’Tinga battlecruiser. Star Trek Online’s YouTube channel also posted a recording of last week’s Ten Forward Weekly stream. In the 38 minute video, Lead Environment Artist Scot Boyd and Senior Environment Artist Nick Duguid sat down to give players a sneak peek of their updated Klingon ground environments. The discussion focused on the Khitomer map used in the Romulan faction mission “Turning Point”, but the updated resources and textures show the kind of improvements to be expected in other Klingon refreshed environments. Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we'll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Questions Are: CQ: CQ: Do you believe the rumor that James Cannavale will be the next Kirk? Do you like the casting, or is there someone else you'd prefer? AND CQ: What did you think of the Khitomer map updates shared by Star Trek Online? TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan ViacomCBS Rebranding The end of CBS ALL ACCESS is near! But not really. But kind of. But...let's get to the story! On Thursday, ViacomCBS CEO Bob Bakish told investors there would be big changes to the companies Over the Top VOD service - CBS ALL ACCESS - starting with a rebranding of the subscription based service. So see, it's sort of the end. But not really - Anyway. Bakish said “major changes coming this summer as we track toward the rebrand and relaunch of a transformed product.”. In addition to the 100 plus movie titles added to the service on Thursday - including Star Trek IV, Generations, First Contact, and Nemesis - All Access programming chief Julie McNamara said in a press release “Expanding CBS All Access' library of films with these iconic titles from Paramount Pictures is just one of the many ways we're integrating the phenomenal catalog of IP available to us within the ViacomCBS family” But movies aren't the only changes coming to the soon-to-be-artist-formally-known-as-CBS ALL ACCESS. ViacomCBS promises to leverage several of its broadcast properties on the service as well, including Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central, BET, Smithsonian, and Paramount Network. Bar Rescue 24-7! No firm details were given about release date or price changes, but we'll be keeping our sensors set to full. Stay tuned! Lower Decks is On-Track For it's Unannounced Premiere Mike McMahon is a busy man. This week, the former Rick and Morty showrunner launched a new animated series on Hulu - Solar Opposites - and sat down with Inverse to promote the show. During the interview, McMahon spoke a bit about his next project, Star Trek: Lower Decks. McMahon gave the vaguest of vague answers when talking about the shows release, saying “I can't give you a specific answer on when that's coming out, but we're still working on it and we're on track for when we have planned, which is this year”.. So… like last week's discussion about potential acquisitions… this is another headline to take with a grain of salt! Really? Skype? Not to be outdone, “We Got This Covered” - which has a long and spotty scoop history - claimed another TOS character was also being recast “we've now heard from our sources – the same ones who told us about the Pike spinoff initially and that Discovery has been renewed for five seasons, which has also been confirmed – that Uhura will also feature in the series. We don't know whether the producers have any actresses in mind for the role yet, but the character will definitely appear on the show.” Star Trek's Intakes Star Trek fans are a creative bunch. From fanfic to podcast - and everything in between - we sure put our passion to good use. One of those industrious fans, youtube Ryan's Edits, has taken Star Trek outtakes and put them back into the episode - and it's even better than it sounds. From Future Imperfect's high-fives to Guinan's...unique advice about the holodeck, these bite-sized trek nuggets are a fun distraction. Star Trek Online and Gaming News by Shane Hoover Groupees Fundraiser Star Trek Online has once again invited players to join in their effort to raise funds for two worthy causes. Buyers of the higher tier will also automatically receive the items from Tier 1. Proceeds from the fundraising will be evenly divided between the United Way Bay Area and Chase Masterson's Pop Culture Hero Coalition. Latest Year of Klingon Updates This week brought us several new insights into the upcoming Klingon content refresh. On the weekly #StovokorSaturday social media post, Ambassador Kael shared a peek at two updated Klingon ship models. One was the B'rel Bird of Prey we were already expecting, and the other was a new model for the K'Tinga battlecruiser. Star Trek Online's YouTube channel also posted a recording of last week's Ten Forward Weekly stream. To see the video yourself, head over to Star Trek Online's youtube channel. This week on Priority One --- We trek out Star Trek: First Contact with director and star Jonathan Frakes, Bryan Fuller's Mirror Universe, Acquisition Rumors, and Legos! In Star Trek Gaming, Star Trek Online reveals the 2020 Summer Event Ship winner, celebrates the “Year of Klingon,” and helps with Zoom meeting fatigue. Of course, as always, before we wrap up the show, we'll open hailing frequencies for your incoming messages Let us know on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or by visiting our website! This Weeks Community Questions Are: CQ: What do you think of Bryan Fuller's explanation of the Mirror Universe? CQ: Who would you rather take over ViacomCBS? Amazon? Netflix? Apple? AND CQ: What are your thoughts on the KDF revamp coming to Star Trek Online? What do you hope to see? TREK IT OUT by Jake Morgan Frakes Watches “First Contact” With IGN We're leading with Jonathan Frakes again. We'd apologize if we thought it was necessary, but it's not. The man is a treasure. So what did the actor, director, and all-around entertaining Frakes do this time? He did a LIVE watch of “Star Trek: First Contact” with IGN, and he did not disappoint. Frakes joined IGN's “Watch From Home Theater” to stream the live-chat of the 1996 classic, and as usual, had some interesting insight and entertaining takes on the film. In regards to the rumor that Special Effects house Industrial Lights and Magic wanted to add the Millenium Falcon into the film, Frakes replied ”I like it and it's a rumor I will continue to spread.” Frakes also credited Ron Moore, Rick Berman and Brannon Braga's script for the movies success, sighting the comedic interludes ”And THAT is one of the keys to the success of this film, is those comic beats are peppered in, they're momentary, and then we restart the engine. I think that's one of the real tricks to Ron and Brannon's script that's not always heralded as important and yet vital in an action-adventure movie.” But Jonathan Frakes answered the real question that's been plaguing Star Trek fans for years - what's with the Riker-Chair-Maneuver? ”That started in 10-forward because the backs of the chairs in 10-forward were so low. It was easy. And then I thought ‘this is a really hot dog, EXPLETIVE thing to do, no one is going to let me do this.' And then nobody stopped me. It's such a cocky, unattractive, bad cowboy move” Bryan Fuller's Take on Mirror Universe It's been a long road, getting from there to here. All the way back in 2016, when we could go outside and give hugs to people, seasoned Star Trek writer Bryan Fuller was given the proverbial keys to the castle - he was put in charge of bringing Star Trek back to TV. After his departure in 2017, we learned a few things about his now-defunct vision, including the pitch that the series be an anthology. Fast Forward to this week, and we learn a bit more about Fuller's unfulfilled plans. Sitting down with Robert Burnett for his youtube show Robservations, Fuller shed light on his vision of the darker side of trek, more specifically the Mirror Universe. ”The thing that really fascinated me in sitting down and crafting the story for Discovery was just the human condition. And I thought that there are elements in the Mirror Universe that we have seen that have sort of boiled to the broadest ends of the spectrum and everything felt really binary. And what I really wanted to do in setting out is looking at the minutiae of simple decisions that have a cascade effect on our lives. So, it's not about gold lamé sashes and goatees versus no sash and clean-shaven. It is more about, like, we are at forks in the road every moment of our lives and we either go left or right.” Fuller elaborated, saying ”It wasn't necessarily the Mirror Universe we know from all of the other series. It was something that was closer to our timeline and experience, so you can still recognize the human being and go, ‘What did I do? How did that seem like a good decision for me in that moment and how do I continue with my life forward?' And everything was a sort of an extrapolation out on that. So, there were things that I wanted the Mirror Universe to function in a narrative exploration of like ‘Oh EXPLETIVE, if I just hadn't done that one thing, everything would be better,' as opposed to, ‘I don't recognize that person, I don't know who that person is, because they are a diametric opposite of who I am.” ViacomCBS For Sale? This next story requires Nancy Crater, M-113 creature levels of salt - a pinch won't do - so get ready for some mottling. Could Star Trek, and the newly re-integrated ViacomCBS, be on the market? Film Critic, Comic Book author, and Youtuber Grace Randolph thinks she may have the answers. In a tweet dated May 1st, Randolph said ”Okay here's some Friday tea for you. As we've been hearing, Apple MIGHT buy Disney - But also Netflix MIGHT buy Viacom (CBS / Paramount, etc). Super rumor stage, but that's what's being sipped in Hollywood right now...” Rumors of Apple purchasing Disney have been floating around for a couple of weeks now, though Nasdaq.com speculates the acquisition is unlikely. But what about Netflix purchasing ViacomCBS? Rumor site Boundingintocomics linked an article to financial website Seeking Alpha, which cited ViacomCBS as a “Prime Takeover Target”. Further, Grace Randolph -the tweeter from earlier in the story - posits on her youtube program, “Beyond The Trailer” that the acquisition would give Netflix access to ViacomCBS' library and franchises and ”This would make Netflix a Movie Studio Proper, where they could make their prestige films, and they would be Netflix OWNED, but they would not be Netflix branded”. In short, Netflix could release Paramount movies in theaters without upsetting Netflix subscribers. Some naysayers point to the obvious fact that Netflix is currently running a substantial debt, and could not float the estimated 5 BILLION dollar acquisition cost. But what about another streaming service, one owned by a billionaire trekkie with a walk-on part in “Star Trek: Beyond” - the Jeff Bezos lead Amazon Prime? Lego Star Trek Speaking of fun. Who doesn't like Legos? The Danish building block toy has inspired, entertained, and enlightened the lives of people across the globe for nearly forty years. And despite the fact that Star Trek has never been included in the Lego block-world, it doesn't mean fans can't bring it in themselves. That's exactly what Reddit user M-2-M did, using Lego's Free Digital Designer. Starting 3 weeks ago, M-2-M has created the cast of The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager, as well as sets from the first season of TNG in chronological order - starting with “Encounter at Farpoint” and currently ending at “Heart of Glory”. These are hugely fun, intricate, and creative and we recommend you follow the link to have a look at them all! Star Trek Online and Gaming News by Shane Hoover 2020 Summer Event Ship Contest Winner Just under 20,000 players voted in Star Trek Online's contest to choose the next Risian Summer Event ship, and the results of the voting have now been announced. In a pair of posts on May 1st, the official STO Twitter account declared Nick Dugid's design as the winner, taking nearly 38% of votes. The senior environment artist's ship design will now be fully developed by concept artist Hector Ortiz and handed over to the dev teams to realize the ship for 2020's Summer Event on Risa. Congratulations to Nick Duguid, and also to the other three game devs who contributed to the contest. Christian Griffith's design came in a close second with 32% of votes, while Jesse Heinig and Mike Fatum's designs took in 16% and 13% of votes respectively. If Nick's design wasn't your personal favorite, perhaps you'll find some solace in another STO account tweet declaring “You never know where these other designs might end up.” Welcome To The Year of Klingon We recently shared Thomas Marrone's surprise reveal of an updated Klingon Bird of Prey model, and now Cryptic have revealed that this year holds much more excitement for Klingon loving players. In fact, 2020 has been dubbed by the game as “The Year of Klingon”. A game news blog dated April 29th announced a new major, multipart Klingon focused storyline set in the game's current timeline of 2411. The blog acknowledged that the game's current Klingon arc is both well loved by players and at the same time lacking many recent technical improvements. Cryptic said, “we're spending time and resources to give these pieces of content visual and gameplay facelifts. Over the next twelve months (maybe more), you'll see new Klingon character models for some of our classic characters like J'Mpok, updated skins for the classic Klingon ships like the Bird of Prey, new environments and cutscenes to refresh this old but beloved content.” Like the recent Star Trek Discovery content releases, The Year of Klingon will be released in installments. To communicate their efforts and generate excitement over this time, there will be regular spotlights on the ongoing development. The first, tagged #StovokorSaturdays, will reveal pieces of updated content weekly on game social media accounts. One #StovokorSaturday has already gone live, providing a brief video of updated Klingon character textures like hairstyles and skin complexions. Other outlets to come are artist streams on the official Twitch account and weekly team interviews on the Ten Forward community stream. That brings us to our first community question for Star Trek Online: What are your thoughts on the KDF revamp coming to Star Trek Online? What do you hope to see? Join Your Meetings From The Bridge “Don't video call for the job you have, video call for the job you want.” So declared Ambassador Kael in another official blog post this week, where he shared 16 Zoom meeting backgrounds created from locations within the game. The backgrounds were all created and provided by player Primar13. The images include a wide selection of ship bridges, plus important locations like Starfleet Academy and the Klingon High Council chambers. If you want to join your next video conference from the bridge of the U.S.S. Enterprise, just follow the link in our show notes. EVENTS Protect Pahvo! When activated, however, three drones will enter combat for a brief time and more effectively damage and disable foes.

Saru. The first Kelpien in Starfleet, Saru served admirably aboard the USS Shenzhou and the USS Discovery, ultimately earning the Starfleet Medal of Honor. Although his rank was lieutenant when we first saw him in “The Vulcan Hello,” he was promoted to commander and first officer by the time of “Context Is for Kings.” He also served as acting captain multiple times when Captain Gabriel Lorca was away. In this episode of The Edge, hosts Patrick Devlin and Amy Nelson are joined by John Krikorian of Trek Profiles on The Tricorder Transmissions Network to discuss this new Star Trek species. Kelpiens are known to sense the coming of death through their threat ganglia, but what else do we learn about Saru's species? We deep-dive into his relationship with Michael Burnham, how he lives in continual fear, and his competency to be captain. In Season 4, Episode 7 of otipêyimsiw-iskwêwak kihci-kîsikohk, Métis in Space, Molly and Chelsea give Star Trek yet another chance to "do Indigeneity right" in this 8th episode of Season 1 of Star Trek: Discovery, where "The USS Discovery is tasked with a high priority mission to planet Pahvo and learn the science behind the Klingons' cloaking technology." Many thanks to the Indigenous Studies Program at McGill University for bringing us out before a live studio audience! This episode features a hilarious laugh track, and some fantastic audience participation!
We come to it at last, the mid season finale of Star Trek Discovery or the end of Chapter 1 as the show would have us call it. Everything starts off routine as the Discovery desperately tries to save the Gagarin from destruction and fails in a not so bad battle except for the wrongness of the ships. All of a sudden out of nowhere the federation realize that a giant naturally occurring antenna on a planet called Pahvo is the answer to all their problems with the Klingons. If the transmitter can be re-configured to send out a different frequency it can act like sonar revealing the position of every cloaked ship in the entire quadrant. Burnham, Saru and Tyler are dispatched to complete this mission when they discover that Pahvo is not uninhabited by an advanced as previously thought, the Pahvans who exist in an non-corporeal state are quite friendly, or so it seems and even try to help poor Saru who is going mad from the constant sounds emanated by the planet and the naturally occurring transmitter. Unfortunately this leads to Saru flipping out completely and endangering the mission the away team set out on. Fortunately Burnham and Tyler have their eye on the ball and concoct a plan to distract Saru and it almost worked except that crazy lying Saru decides to meld with tyler through an emerald that is conveniently given to him by the Pahvans. In a race to the finish, Saru attempts to destroy the signal augmentation that Burnham puts in place but not before the Pahvans intervene and ask Saru to quit with the paranoia. The pahvans, who are probably weirded out completely repair the transmitter allowing the away team to make contact with the discovery but its not as we thought, after the crew beam away the Pahavans start broadcasting a message to the Klingons forcing a conflict with the Discovery.
After the mission at Pahvo proves to be a failure, Starfleet orders Captain Lorca to bring the discovery into the safety of Federation space even though that means the Pahvans will surely meet their doom at the hands of the Klingons, so instead, Captain Lorca feigns problems with his spore drive to buy the crew time to come up with a solution. The solution the come up with is quite complex but its the best they've got and so they get right to it, hoping their efforts will end the war by disabling the one advantage the Klingons have over the Federation, a cloaking screen. The crew are successful and they even manage to recover Admiral Cornwall and manage to capture the Klingon L'Rell along the way, but it comes at great cost to poor Commander Tyler and just when we think they'll get a rest, the Discovery jumps to an unknown place that is not registering on any star charts. Is she in another dimension, or universe, perhaps the mirror Universe, perhaps the prime timeline? We'll have to wait till January 7th to find out but you can find out what we thought of this episode of Star Trek Discovery by tuning in.

Joining Adam and Brian are Mark Des Cotes of Solo Talk Media and my former co-host of The Walking Dead Talk Through, Ruthie Rink! Bittersweet Announcement We begin the episode with an important announcement about this podcast. Unfortunately, Adam has decided to step down as co-host of the podcast. This is his last episode for the immediate future, due to other commitments that make it difficult to do this podcast. It’s sad to see Adam go. He’s been a big reason for the podcast’s success, and this podcast wouldn’t be where it is without him. However, I am pleased to announce that the new co-host is Ruthie!!! Ruthie and I have been podcasting together for over three years. She’s as big of a Star Trek fanatic as Adam and I are, and she loves this show. I think you will find that the quality of this show will not skip a beat, and since this podcast’s format is based upon the format of The Walking Dead Talk Through, we probably won’t be changing things much. You can still listen to Adam on The Nerfherder Council podcast. Submit Your Feedback for S1E10 Despite Yourself! David and Zach go back to the Original Series to understand the Mirror Universe by reviewing the episode “Mirror, Mirror.” Despite the classic (or some may say, “dated”) visuals and cheesy 60’s style fight scenes, Zach enjoyed the episode a lot. David points out the theme of “noninterference” throughout the episode, which surprisingly parallels Discovery’s Pahvo storyline very well. Afterwards, they discuss the hints in Discovery which point to the MU. David shares his crazy MU theory which came to him in a dream. Zach compares TOS to the Beatles; he’s slowly becoming a Trekkie!

On this episode of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, Adam and I discuss Season 1 Episode 9, titled Into the Forest I Go. We see the Discovery fight the Klingon Ship of the Dead and General Kol, and Burnham redeems herself a great deal from the mutiny in the series premiere. She defeats Kol, rescues Admiral Cornwell, and is instrumental in saving Pahvo from certain destruction. We also see 133 spore drive micro jumps! Don’t you think that the spore drive is cool? However, it is clear that too much of a good thing can get you killed! So what did we think of this episode? I thought this was the best episode of Star Trek: Discovery so far, definitely better than the last episode! Adam did not like it as much as I did, but still found it to be a solid episode. Halbstaffelfinale. Picking up from the previous episode, the Klingon Kol is in route to the planet Pahvo intent on killing anyone he finds. Admiral Terral orders the Discovery to retreat to the nearest star base. Captain Lorca seems to comply with the order while attempting to figure out another way to identify the cloaked ship. The crew of the Discovery devises a plan to place two sensors on the Sarcophagus that will allow them to map the cloaking grid. Tyler and Burnham serve as the away team to set the sensors at the helm and stern of the Sarcophagus. Using the spore drive, Stamets must initiate 133 jumps in rapid succession to allow the data collection necessary for this task. The mission is successful: The Pahvans are saved; Admiral Cornwell rescued; L’Rell taken prisoner; and the Sarcophagus destroyed. Collected data provides the Federation the information needed for them to detect cloaked shops and turn the tide of the war with the Klingon. Lorca learns he will be awarded the Legion of Honor. With a few notable exceptions, all seems well with the crew when Stamets agrees to initiate one last jump to get Discovery safely to a starport. However, the jump goes terribly wrong and the crew finds they are unable to identify where they have landed. When Starfleet asks for the U.S.S. Discovery to stand down at Pahvo, Lorca decides that instead he'll have his crew crack T'Kuvma's math. But when Burhnam and Tyler sneak around the Klingon death ship, Ash finds himself trapped by P.S.T.D. Can Bob help them escape? Why doesn't L'Rell wear safety glasses? Can Stamets survive 133 live Phish songs? It's the episode that solves one universal problem, while cloaking another.
As the Discovery prepares to face down the Klingon Ship of the Dead and defend Pahvo, her crew concocts a desperate plan to potentially end the war. But not all is what it seems when held up to a mirror. Pete and Matt reflect upon the Star Trek: Discovery Chapter 1 finale, episode 109 “Into the Forest I Go.”MP3iTunes

When the crew of the USS Discovery face off against the Klingons and their new invisibility screen, they begin to realize that the spore drive may not be the ultimate weapon they think. Meanwhile, Saru, Burnham, and Tyler are on an away mission in the hopes of finding a way to penetrate the Klingon's new technology. While on the planet Pahvo, they encounter aliens that have an extreme effect on Saru. Saru gets an away mission but before that, non-corporeal aliens show up a lot in Star Trek. In fact, the Q and Voyager’s Kes are among some of the more well known energy beings. This week, we talk about our favorite non-corporeal alien episodes of Star Trek and we manage to cover three different series...
Manic MacSnider und Mad Florian sind sich nicht ganz sicher was sie von dieser Folge halten sollen und sind arg geblendet von dem merkwürdigen Color Grading auf Pahvo und sympathisieren heute lieber mit den Klingonen.

Star Trek: Discovery – S1E8 – Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum On this episode of The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, Adam and I discuss Season 1 Episode 8, titled Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum. Saru knows fear! This episode does a deeper (but in my opinion, not deep enough) dive into Saru and his species. For a prey species, Kelpiens are faster, stronger, have better senses and taller than humans. He can crush communicators with his bare hands. Can you imagine what the apex predator species that considers the Kelpiens prey? For the first time in his life, Saru felt no fear on the planet. His actions, however, showed questionable judgment. His actions on the planet were nothing short of mutiny, though I doubt he will be reprimanded for it. What does Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum mean? According to the Wikipedia article, Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum means “If you want peace, prepare for war”. So what did we think of Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum? It was very much a split vote for this episode. Adam thought it was the best episode so far, but I had the opposite reaction. I would probably rank this one as my least favorite so far. I had a hard time figuring out why I had that impression, but I finally identified one key issue: The episode length. It started with a bang but, in my opinion, it tailed off from there. Mind you, it seemed well written, well-acted, well-directed and the effects (with the exception of the naturally occurring transmitter) excellent. The problem that I see is that there was enough potential story there to fit into two episodes, but the episode was not only edited down to a single episode, but this was the shortest episode so far. It seemed like a lot of the story on the planet had been edited out, as did the story on the Klingon sarcophagus ship. It’s possible that some of the Klingon plot could have been moved to next week’s mid-season finale, and it’ll fit well once that’s been released, but the episode could have benefited from more time to expand the story. Is Cornwell still alive? That’s one thing that wasn’t clear but we both think that she did not die. We should be seeing her again next episode. As the episode opened we find the U.S.S. Gargarin engaged in a fierce battle with several Klingon Birds of Prey using the cloaking technology. The Discovery joins the battle attacking but finds itself less than prepared. An inexperienced Tactical Officer appears wholly incompetent as he is too slow to target and fire on the enemy vessels. Just then, Kol decloaks the Sarcophagus Ship an delivers several fatal phaser shots weakening the ship’s shields. In a last ditch effort to protect the Gargarin Lorca orders the helmsman to put the Discovery between it and two Klingon ships. Discovery is hit by one photon torpedo but the other gets pass it and destroys the other Federation ship. After Discovery leaves the scene, Lorca will not allow the crew to give into sentiment. He tells them, “now is not the time to grieve.” However, Lorca also understands that despite their advantage with the spore drive technology, he still has a raw crew under his command whose inexperience may one day prove their undoing. Meanwhile, First Officer Saru, Michael Burnham, and Lt. Ash Tyler go on an away mission to the planet Pahvo, in an effort to adapt an extremely tall crystalline tower that broadcast on a unique frequency resonating from the entire planet. They wish to turn the tower into an antenna broadcasting a different frequency to disrupt cloaked Klingon ships. They find the planet inhabited by the Pahvans, a group of sentient noncorporeal beings who appear to live in harmony with the entire planet. Saru initiates first contact with them in an attempt to communicate their mission objectives. However, he becomes entranced by the euphoric, peaceful world of the Pahvans. Saru attempts to convince Burnham and Tyler to forgo their mission and remain on the planet, but Michael is able to incapacitate Saru. The Pahvans initially appear to accommodate Michael’s request to aid the Federation. However, back on the Discovery, Lorca later learns the Pahvans naively have sent messages to the Klingons and Federation to meet there to broker a peace.

Episode 8, “Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum” weaves together an A-plot on the surface of the planet Pahvo with B-plot following L’rell’s activities on The Death Ship. David loved the prime-directive implications of the planetary story but had trouble getting into the L’rell scenes. Zach remained lukewarm on the whole episode but hoped this was set up for an epic mid-season finale this week.
