After being friends for decades, former members of The Muffs, The Pandoras, and The Friggs, Kim Shattuck, Melanie Vammen, and Palmyra Delran, finally decided it was time to start their own band together. Kim and Melanie first played together in The Pandoras and went on to form The Muffs, meeting The Friggs' Palmyra on a Pandoras tour. The uber-talented trio is now known as The Coolies—a female-fronted super group backed by decades of rock stardom, who are using their platform to combat ALS.The Coolies dropped their self-titled debut EP in the summer on 2019 and have donated 100% of the proceeds from record sales to support research for the ALS Association. Living in different cities, the six-track EP was recorded at both West and East Coast studios and mixed by Grammy Award-winner Geoff Sanoff. From the very first track, “Uh Oh!,” bubbling down to “Yeah I Don't Know,” The Coolies dabbles in fizzy pop, punk, and pure rock, an essence that's perfectly captured by its psychedelic 3-D vinyl cover.Support the show

There are always rock n' roll stories on RadioWilderLive.com and so because #166 is titled Rock n' Roll Stories is because I was so struck about the short life and skills of Mike Bloomfield, that a couple of quick quotes are in order before you listen to him this Friday on RadioWilderLive.com as his band The Electric Flag with young Buddy Guy on the skins cover, Howlin 'Wolf In the Deuces are Wilder slot. He would go to downtown Chicago at around 16 or 17 and play with many of the blues legends like Howlin Wolf and Muddy Waters and many others in their world. The black blues dudes would roll their eyes and say 'here comes another white kid who thinks he can play the blues' and laugh. After the first time he played, they changed their tune and were stunned that not only could he play, but he really felt it! When they asked him how, he replied 'I'm Jewish and we have always been persecuted and I feel it.' More to Mike's story on Fridays show but you can also chill out to a brand new tunes by Jesse Malin and Palmyra Delran. How about Spirit Tacos by The Adam Brown from Canada. A couple of requests from Kelli and Brandon from Woodlands Self Storage and plenty more! 'Baby Ruth' is working on the distribution channel for her Baby Ruth honey fueled energy bars but promises the show will be up by 3:00 Eastern! Did you realize that he hosts a show called Friday Night Freak Out on Little Stevie’s Underground Garage Sirius XM radio station? He does, and it gets wonderfully weird. Drew sat down with legendary Philly musician — and fellow Underground Garage DJ — Palmyra Delran (The Friggs, The Coolies) for a fun trip down the musical rabbit hole. The two chop it up on Drew’s history playing in polka bands; the culture clash that occurred when Palmyra hired a classical cellist for a session; meeting Dick Clark, Brian Wilson, and a couple of Beatles; and so much more. Check it out! Today’s show was recorded by Eric Rennaker at Bedrock.LA in Los Angeles, and Mark Yoshizumi at Hook and Fade Studios in Brooklyn. It was co-produced by Mark Yoshizumi. Palmyra Delran is inciting espionage. “Come Spy With Me is an invitation to come for the ride and listen to the record with me,” says the trash-pop maven of her new album on Steven Van Zandt’s Wicked Cool Records, out November 9. “Plus, spying is all the rage these days. I know there’s a movie from 1967 with the same title as my album, but I haven’t seen it.” Spy builds on Palmyra’s growing notoriety within the Garage Rock universe, which has seen many of her tracks named “Coolest Song In The World” on Little Steven’s Underground Garage. One of them, “Baby Should Have Known Better,” was even SiriusXM listeners’ choice for “Coolest Song Of The Year” in 2008. Another fan favorite, “You’re My Brian Jones,” was a highlight of her last full-length effort, 2013’s You Are What You Absorb. The Doppel Gang consists of bassist Michael Lynch (“a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter who’s been in tons of cool bands and released a few records of his own”), drummer Mark Brotter (“he’s played with Hem, Evie Sands, Alan Merrill who wrote “I Love Rock ’n’ Roll” and Bowery Boys”) and Richard Dev Greene (“true rock ’n’ roll to the core, he was in Pale Face Of Youth who re- formed as Pale Moon Gang, and he’s doing gigs with the re-formed Plimsouls”).

On today's show, musician blogger and label owner, Jim Slade. I met Slade back in the mid-80s, when his band Nixon's Head was a regular in Philadelphia area clubs. A five-piece rock and roll titan, The Head specialized in loud rock and roll inspired by 60s garage pop nuggets and the early New Wave all brought to life by a quintet of close-knit friends. Their shows are some of the most joyous rock and roll shows I've ever witnessed and they were a big part of a under-documented Philly scene of the mid to late 80s, sharing gigs with similarly-minded bands like The Ben Vaughn Combo, Baby Flamehead, Sky-Grits, The Wishniaks, Electric Love Muffin as well as the Dead Milkmen, whose reputation spread world-wide. You can check out all these bands and more on a compilation called “You're Soaking in It” a compilation produced by New York rocker Palmyra Delran, released in 1988 on Apex Records Although the Head broke-up for a few years in the early 90s they soon reformed and have continued on for over three decades now, recording a number of releases, their most recent being the 2014's MOD!, a dual disc with the band The Donuts. In late April, the band will play a one-time only gig at The Boot & Saddle in Philly as THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, performing a set of your favorite Clash tunes, as long as your favorites are pre-COMBAT ROCK. Outside of his time with The Head, Slade is the Moderator on the popular music blog ROCKTOWNHALL, a spirited forum to discuss the aesthetics of classic rock and roll, you can find them at rocktownhall.com. Slade also founded the Groove Disques label, which besides releasing Nixon's Head music has distributed releases from the bands Trollyvox, The Knife and Fork Band, Dave Ragsdale and the Stiff Records tribute disc, "The Stiff Generation." You can find out more at groovedisques.com I met with Slade a few weeks back at the Fun 2 Know kitchen studio, our conversation fueled by Jim's as-yet unfinished memoir, entitled AND IT WAS ALRIGHT, named after a line form the Velvet Underground tune “Rock And Roll.” It is an inspiring honest and intimate look at growing up in love with rock and roll in the 70s and 80s that also touches on family strife and the struggle of a young man to forge a place in the world. It's a music-drenched, extended conversation between two rock and roll disciples, littered with many asides and a batch of great tunes from across Nixon's Head's discography, hope you enjoy it.

Mike Ferguson, aka Mick Cancer of the Philly punk band The Sic Kidz is our guest. The Sick Kidz, the brainchild of Ferguson, were willed into existence as a literary prank come to life. The band can make their claim as being Philadelphia first punk band as that cultural revolution blew its shockwave out from New York City and across the globe. The Sick Kidz were fueled by Mike's deep love of music, being a witness to the birth of rock and roll in the 50s. to the counter-culture revolutions of the 60s, to the Southern pop of the 70s and the original punk wave as the 70s turned into the 80s. With the Sick Kidz, and his extravagantly theatrical alter ego Mick Cancer, Mike has turned a fan's love into a slow but steady stream of potently fun recordings with the bands Pink Slip Daddy, Das Yahoos and most recently the country punk of Dixy Blood where he has been re-dubbed “Clarence Cancer.” He's a longtime collaborator with popular producer and performer Ben Vaughn and Palmyra Delran of the NYC band The Friggs, and has shared intimate friendships with the late legends Alex Chilton and Lux Interior of The Cramps. We talk to Mike about his love and rock and roll and honky tonk music, the artists whose paths he crossed, his musical career and a couple of new projects coming our way.
