When thinking about effective leadership, it can be easy to focus on the tangible: what needs to be done and how quickly can it be accomplished? While this is important, it is just as important to develop self-awareness and team-building skills as leaders. Leaders should ask questions, be accessible, be vulnerable, and create an environment that allows people to feel safe to give feedback, and this requires emotional intelligence.Join Russ Ewell as he talks with Dr. Patricia Thompson, a corporate psychologist and executive coach, about the need for leaders across all organizations to develop emotional intelligence, and to create a culture among your team that encourages collaboration and growth.
When reflecting on her past, Patricia acknowledges that for the first two years of her consulting career, the desire to always come across the right way and to say the right things actually constrained her from contributing to conversations as much as she would have liked. Patricia believes that this habit of biting her tongue stemmed from the fear of rejection, but once she was able to overcome this fear, she has learned to be more of a risk-taker. Ultimately, opening up more opportunities for herself. Patricia is also an advocate for self-awareness and self-knowledge. By being aware that she's an introvert, Patricia has been able to organize her schedule in a way that's optimal for her personality. Five years ago, she left her corporate job to become the founder of Silver Lining Psychology where she teaches businesses how to use the science of positive psychology to achieve greater outcomes. If you are not careful, pretty soon your life outside of work can become another job, full of tasks you have to complete. Many of us end up spending our non-work time like we're employees--and it does not have to be that way. What is the alternative? Living your life intentionally. In this episode, Dr. Patricia Thompson makes the case for why living intentionally is so important, and provides a few strategies to get you started.
