I'm joined by Patton McDowell, a non-profit expert and leadership coach. Our conversation traverses many elements of not-for-profit / nonprofit leadership, focusing on boards and board members. We tackle the issue of how to get the most out of your board members, and how a not-for-profit (NFP) board can go from well-intentioned to high-performing. Patton also shares his views on joining a NFP board from a traditional (for-profit) background, and how to build a dynamic board in a NFP organisation. We close out with some future-casting on what's in store over the next number of years for NFP boards. There is a wealth of information in this conversation for boards beyond NFP sector, so grab a pen and paper and settle in with my conversation with Patton McDowell. One of the hardest things I do in my job is saying no to nonprofits I know are doing great work but they are just not a fit for the funding strategy I am supporting for my clients. There is no easy way to say no to a nonprofit but I offer you some tips and a pathway to make that rejection just a little easier on the nonprofit. I know you do want to make a difference but you just can't fund everyone. If you're like me who struggles with saying no to amazing nonprofits, then this episode is for you! Learn how to politely say no as I share the techniques I use to say no to nonprofits in a way that really helps them rather than leaving them frustrated. Episode Highlights: Be clear about what you are funding so it's also clear what you are not funding. 100: Leadership Lessons from the First 100 Episodes (Patton McDowell)SUMMARYReaching the 100-episode milestone on Your Path to Nonprofit Leadership was a wonderful journey thanks to incredible nonprofit leaders who were willing to share their wisdom and experiences with our listeners. Chris Delisio, our guest on episode #24 on the Path, offered to rejoin the show and interview me about the experience since the inaugural episode on November 21, 2019. Our discussion lifted up many fantastic episodes and the leadership lessons each one produced. Three categories emerged: productivity and management tips, leadership and career development advice, and of course, the best book recommendations and resources our guests could offer.
