What does God need to do to change our minds? Owen Lynch follows the story of the first believers in “The Way” of Jesus and sees how his call for them to adopt a new perspective - what is often translated “repent” in our Bibles - might happen more than once, and could take dramatic forms. Peter had a vision from God which not only changed his mind but changed how people were accepted into faith and community, opening this to everyone. Have we now learned everything we need to know about this, or are we open to God changing our minds too?

On this episode of the Friends in Beauty podcast I welcome Nakoya Yancey to the Friends in Beauty guest chair. Nakoya is a Hair Designer, with over 30 years of professional experience. She is also a UK trained Wig Maker and Facial Hair Piece Maker.    Watching the famous show The Wire on HBO peaked Nakoya's curiosity in the Film and Television world of Hair Styling. In 2009 Nakoya got her first break on the film The Best and The Brightest. From that day on Nakoya never looked back.   Nakoya learned period wig styling from working on the AMC television show Turn. After six hard years Nakoya was able to join the IASTE Local 798 Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Union in 2015. Working on Turn Nakoya was able to see and work with wigs that were made by Peter Owen, Peter King, and Ray Marston. Nakoya's next move was to go to England and learn the timeless craft of Wig Making.  This move took her to another level.  She started working in New York shortly after coming back from England and with the knowledge and craft she learned overseas, she landed a job on The Greatest Showman as a Wig Maker.  Nakoya has been blessed enough to work under the legendary Jerry Popolis, the late Kenneth Walker, Nathan Busch, and Jerry DeCarlo. Some of Nakoya's credits include If Beale Street Could Talk, One Night In Miami, And Just Like That Season 1, Shirley, Queen Suga, and most recently The Book of Clarence to name a few.   Nakoya's main goal is to grow, educate herself, stay fluid, and viable in this ever changing industry. If Boris Johnson had locked down earlier, Peter Owen would still be alive today, this is the firm belief of his daughter Becky. Instead, this beloved father and grandfather caught Covid 19 shopping in Sainsbury's on March 19, three days before Johnson belatedly put the country into lockdown. Becky vividly describes the void left behind by the death of her father, a proud Welshman from Aberystwyth who “always made time for people.”Equally as powerful is her description of the surreality of his death and feelings of distorted grief because all the rituals that usually go with death were denied. “I have nothing in my head to say that it's really happened,” Becky explains. “I've gone from seeing my dad before lockdown to seeing a pot of ash, there was nothing in between. That's a pretty abnormal thing“There was no proof that he died. I have no idea where he died, what the hospital ward looked like that he was on, or the bed, I don't know where he was cremated, I don't know any of the circumstances around his death.” Heartbreakingly, the nature of his death meant: “I've no idea what his last words to me were meant to be.”As with so many people in the Covid-19 bereaved community, Becky has only recently faced her loss and grief: “Coming out of lockdown was very difficult. I felt if I stayed in lockdown, he might somehow come back again and I wouldn't be leaving him behind.” Created, produced, and hosted by Karen Rice, the Stolen Goodbyes podcast won gold in the fiercely competitive Best Lockdown category of the British Podcast Award 2021.Stolen Goodbyes is described as: "outstanding ethical and trauma-informed journalism. The Ice Palace or Is-slottet by Tarjei Vesaas is a 20th century classic by one of Norway's greatest modern writers. First published by Gyldendal in 1963, it went on to win the Nordic Council Literary Prize in 1964. In 1966, it was published in Elizabeth Rokkan's English translation by Peter Owen who described it as the best novel he ever published. To discuss it we're joined by friend of the show Max Porter – who's surprised it isn't the most famous book in the world – and by another great Norwegian, Karl Ove Knaussgård, who agrees but who also think's Vessas's The Birds ( or Fuglane), published six years earlier, might be even better. We discuss both books in their English translations (recently released as Penguin Modern Classics) and Karl Ove treats us to a reading from the beginning of The Ice Palace in Norwegian. This episode also features Andy sharing his pleasure and deep amusement at Bob Dylan's latest book – The Philosophy of Modern Song (Simon & Schuster) while John is moved by Emergency, Daisy Hildyard's darkly beautiful novel about a rural Northern childhood overshadowed by presentiments of the coming climate disaster (Fitzcarraldo Editions). Peter Owen is a 63-year-old geologist, photographer and entrepreneur from Melbourne Victoria, Australia. He is a founding member of the TICNA (Tick-Borne Community Network Australia) public education group and President of the Conquering Chronic Illness patient support group. While recovering from a badly broken leg from a fall at his home, Mr. Owen began to feel incredible pain all over his body. Beginning with headaches, shoulder pain, and neck pain his symptoms expanded and migrated to include fatigue, panic attacks, and brain fog. Mr. Owen was misdiagnosed with MECFS after he was examined and treated by 30 doctors over 18 years. Despite an official government “there is no Lyme dogma in Australia,” Mr. Owen's general practitioner sent his 50 most afflicted patients for IGeneX blood testing and Mr. Owen's tested positive for Lyme disease. His IGeneX lab results were confirmed by a follow up test from the German Infectolab. The lab tests provoked Mr. Owen to join Lyme Facebook groups and research Lyme and tick infection treatment on his own because “there is no such thing as an LLMD in Australia.” His journey required him to overcome “disbelief and denial by doctors, family and friends” while exploring treatment options. If you would like to learn more about how an Australian Lyme disease activist is standing up swimming against the tide of an official government policy that denies the existence of Lyme disease, then tune in now!

Peter Owen Jones is the former ad man who gave it all up to become a parish priest. By the late 1980s, the former farm boy had carved out a successful career working as a creative director for a top London agency.  But shortly before his 30th birthday, Peter walked away from his lucrative career to embrace a simpler, more meaningful life.Known to many as the ‘vicar in the hat', and seen often on TV, Peter is an unconventional priest – whose views and approach are often at odds with classic Church of England doctrine. Given up for adoption at six weeks old, he says this void left him feeling as though he had a space inside himself, full of unanswered questions. So, when he himself became a father, he set out to find his birth mother. Six months later they met for the first time on a train platform in Scotland.During our conversation Peter discusses the power of embracing vulnerability and putting it to work. As we all reach the end of another difficult year, there are some useful lessons here which can be put to good use, regardless of your faith.  A perfect Crisis Shortcut for Christmas.Peter's Crisis Cures:1 – Lie down.  When you are feeling overwhelmed, when you're feeling deeply distraught and the full force of crisis hits – lie down.2 – Pray.  To open yourself to feel the full force of the pain you are experiencing and invite healing into that place.3 – Walk.  St Francis of Assisi said “Solvitur ambulando – it can be solved by walking.”Stream/Buy ‘Allies' by Some Velvet Morning: https://ampl.ink/qp6bm Some Velvet Morning Website: www.somevelvetmorning.co.uk

The Birds by Tarjei Vesaas was originally published in Nynorsk in 1957, and is available from Peter Owen books and now as a Penguin Modern Classics  edition.  The translation is by Michael Barnes and Torbjorn Stoverud.  The central character of The Birds is Mattis, a mentally disabled man, living with his sister in a small rural community in Norway.   We observe Mattis as he attempts to navigate the obstacles of everyday life - the obligations of work, family relationships and even romantic love.  Mattis’ transcendental, or even visionary inner life, keenly evoked by Vesaas’ spare and lucid prose, is far richer than it appears to those around him.  At the core of the novel, is Mattis’ struggle with the border between experience and expression in a world where birds seem to understand more than people.   Over the course of the programme, we discuss the role of the woodcock as a symbol, Vesaas’ sensitive and generous treatment of mental disability, and the possibility of viewing Mattis as an artist figure.

In the Great Australian Bight, permission has been granted for seismic testing for oil, prior to offshore drilling - all in one of our most pristine marine environments. Smorgasboarder South Australian correspondent Jimmy Ellis talks with Peter Owen from the Wilderness Society - who also happens to be a Victor Harbour resident and concerned South Australian. What’s he concerned about? The pure lunacy of oil in the Bight. If something was to go wrong, the scale of disaster would make Deep Water Horizon look like a drop in the ocean.People who want to stand against this, should look to join a local paddle out in SA, Victoria on March 3rd and possibly organise one in their local area if they are in different regions. For more information and a full feature article, see the current edition (#44) of Smorgasboarder magazine at www.smorgasboarder.com.au.Sign the petition to save the Great Australian Bight from exploitation by the big oil mining companies lining up for risky, deep-sea drilling at fightforthebight.wilderness.org.auwww.fightforthebight.org.au #fightforthebightLinks at https://smorgasboarder.com.au/ep12-fight-for-the-bight-peter-owen-wilderness-society/

John Calder (1927-2018) was a giant of 20th century literary publishing, and a champion of free speech. Best known for publishing Samuel Beckett's novels and poetry, he brought much of the most innovative European literature of the 20th century to an English-speaking audience, ultimately won a landmark obscenity trial over Hubert Selby Jr's 'Last Exit to Brooklyn' and has inspired several generations of exciting writers and publishers. Joining Juliet to discuss Calder's life and legacy is Alex Kovacs, author of 'The Currency of Paper' (2013), who worked in Calder's bookshop in London in 2008-10. Anna Kavan’s Ice was originally published in 1967 by Peter Owen books. The book is Kavan’s final and best known work, and appeared just one year before her death. In the aftermath of a nuclear war, society is rapidly crumbling as a wall of ice threatens to engulf the entire planet. Our unnamed narrator roams through this barren, frozen wasteland in pursuit of a young girl with a halo of hair as bright as spun glass; his designs on her are decidedly sinister. The novel proceeds with the torturous, cyclical quality of an inescapable nightmare in which the reader is cocooned. Over the course of the episode, we discuss the extent to which Kavan's heroin addiction influenced the novel, consider the novels place in the tradition of post-apocalyptic fiction, and explore the unique brutality of the novel's narrator.
