Val and Faith are back in the studio for 2024 and kick things off with a catch up on some of the local news over the summer break. We start by sharing our bike moments and for both of us they seem to resolve around red traffic lights and those magic moments when they turn green! Over the weekend a solidarity ride for the Gaza Sunbirds was organised by An Other Collective in Melbourne and Sydney as part of a world wide show of support. You can find out more about the Gaza Sunbirds at their website and donate to support their actions in Gaza providing aid.Darebin Council is holding a special meeting on Monday to consider a recision motion on some safety improvements for Soth Crescent and Newcastle Streets in Darebin. Take a look at the Streets Alive Darebin page for all the background on this and updated information on the original motion and the recision motion. Southside, in Glen Eira, the LXRP are planning to remove 100+ mature trees to build a protected bike lane. On a wide street with plenty os space for pedestrians, parking, moving vehicles, and protected bike lanes it seems incredible that these trees can't be saved. Especially when they are so important to those using active transport modes. You can read more on Glen Eira BUG's Facebook page. And who. could have missed it, but just in case you did, the Walmer Street bridge has re-opened! It has been a sage and much of that saga well documented by Yarra BUG Radio but the bridge is finally done! For now. In bad news, the Footscray Road shared path is now indefinietly closed due to the state government's inability to safely manage truck traffic. What do they do in the rest of the world we wonder? It's a mystery. And from the United States, the War on Cars dive into the horrendous increase in pedestrian fatalities and the uptake of SUVs. Two dates to put in your diary for 2024 have already been anounced: Feburary 25th will see a welcome summer edition of the World Naked Bike Ride in Melbourne and Sunday June 30th is set for the next Melburn Roobaix.

Val and Faith are joined in the studio today by Tommy Quick who has just finished cycling the four most extreme points of Australia. We all share our bike moments, and as you might expect, Tommy's was a bit more epic than the rest! We take a look at some news, including a report in The Guardian over the weekend detailing how Australia's road toll has risen over the past twelve months, particulalry for those on bikes. Followed by the City of Yarra's consultation on Wellington Street, make sure you have your say!We also catch up on the Critical Mass North held on last Friday which saw over 200 people riding to raise awareness for safer infrstcructure for cyclists in Darebin and Yarra.  Check out some of the highlights at this thread. Tommy tells us the inspiration behind his challenge to ride to the four most extreme points of Australia, after he suffered a stroke at twelve years old. Discovering that staying active helped him manage the challenges he faced physically and mentally, he set himself the goal of walking the Kokoda Trail before investing in a tricycle and looking for his next challenge. Cycling over 9000kms on his recumbent tricycle Tommy's challenge was made even more difficult after he was hit by a car in 2021 and needed extensive rehabilitation to carry on his journey. So far he has raised over $100,000.00 to raise awareness of young stroke for the Stroke Foundation but you still have time to make a donation yourself! As usual we run out of time far too soon! You can follow Tommy's journey at the4points.org and find all of his social media links there too. Heads up: Tommy is hosting a fundraiser in Moonee Ponds on MOvember 11th. All the details here.

Vi metterò tutte le note e i suoi contatti nelle note del programma e vi invito veramente a esplorare il lavoro di Elodie di perché è pura magia.TRANSLATIONWhen I texted Elodie last summer we hadn't heard from each other for about six years, since I left Australia and a lot of things had happened in those years, other than the fact that I'd left Australia, she too had moved, she had gone to teach in New York, she had then tried to return to Australia, but she had been stuck in New York during the Covid, she had gone to Spain, in short, several things had happened. But when we spoke with a message and then we saw each other in a connection, with zoom I think, it was as if we had never left each other. We talked uninterruptedly for 1 hour and a half, we told each other what we had done and there was great joy in seeing each other again.Elodie is a fantastic person, a person I met, let's say the last year before I left Australia, but from the first moment I saw her this spark immediately clicked, I absolutely wanted to know who this beautiful woman was, fascinating and interesting. I met Elodie because we were both on the women's advisory board of Darebin, which was the Melbourne neighborhood where we both lived. At the time I was preparing the materials to apply for a PhD, which I never did, while she was finishing her PhD. Immediately attracted by her magnetic personality I wanted to sit next to her and we started talking and we never stopped, we became friends and we started seeing hanging out also outside the Darebin women's committee.Elodie is an artist who has a PhD in visual arts and she specializes in the representation of femininity in modern visual art. She has just published a monograph, I tell you the title because the title alone drives me crazy, it is 'Animality and Humanity in French Late Modern Representations of Black Femininity'. Practically Elodie analyzes how women, femininity, especially women who came from Africa, or in any case appear different with respect to the Western world, how they were represented, how the way they were represented did nothing but perpetuate racism, exclusion, as it amplified these aspects. So, why am I telling you about this? Because I just finished leaving a very long, indeed a series of very long messages to Elodie for a project we are working on together. I will put all the notes and her contacts in the program notes and really invite you to explore Elodie's work because it is pure magic.

The volume of cars in residential streets was also lowered. Moreland Council and VicRoads are currently working to trial 30kph streets at the moment while Yarra ran a trial not too long ago. The Northern Trails Strategy 2022 builds on the 2016 strategy and is currently open for consultation. As a collaborative project between Moreland, Darebin, Banyule, Hume, Whittlesea, and Nillumbik Councils, Northern Trails 2022 aims to ensure integration of planning, advocacy and development efforts, while making recommendations for trail infrastructure, management, marketing and improvement projects. You can find detailed information about the project here as well as a survey to get your feedback in prioritising projects from a ten project short list. Hacia Atherton is Speaker, Company Director, Certified Practicing Accountant, Ambassador, Industry Thought Leader and Philanthropist. In 2017, Hacia was crushed by her 600kg warmblood horse and doctors told her she would likely never walk again in any meaningful way. Devastated by her new reality, Hacia fell into a deep depression. However, her fighting spirit revived itself, as she faced her toughest challenge yet - to stand unaided for the first time since her accident. Hacia was only able to stand without assistance for three seconds. She cried in agony, defeat, and frustration at the helplessness of her situation. It was at this point mentally and emotionally that Hacia realised she had a choice. To let her tragic circumstances dictate the remainder of her life, or to face the seemingly impossible goal of walking again with courage, positivity, and spirit. Three years and thirteen operations later, Hacia has defied the odds, not only learning to walk again but also completing two 100km bike rides and achieving her CPA from her hospital bed - successfully turning a major life trauma into a triumph. Hacia’s adaptability and resilience, and her ability to redefine her own version of success, is a story she now shares to inspire audiences across Australia. Hacia is also the founder of NFP Empowering Women in Trade, with the mission to radically increase female representation in skilled trades in Australia and to create a more equitable, balanced workforce that values and prioritises the participation of skilled female tradespeople. Today on Uprise Radio we are talking about local council elections and the Victorian Socialists expanded plans - the youngish party is running council candidates in 5 electorates across Melbourne, giving people in Hume, Maribyrnong, Darebin, Moreland and Melbourne City a chance to put an anti-capitalist presence into their local council machinery. Local councils are often characterized as the petty, grasping cousins of Oz' large political family - filled with puppet candidates driven by developers and single issue obsessives. Yet the local council also shapes a community's values and can project and protect citizen's aspirations towards economic justice, access to amenities and a vibrant community life. More recently we have seen small communities activate through councils to provide subsidised clean energy, transport and even broadband.  We are joined today by two Victorian Socialist candidates - Liz Walsh is running in Maribyrnong and Daniel Taylor is running in Moreland. Voting will be done via post and closes Friday 23rd of October.

Since the events surrounding the so-called "hard-lockdown" of Victorian public housing estates, Meg and Kevin take advantage of the increased attention on public housing issues. This week we interview Professor Libby Porter, a social scientist who works at RMIT and with the Save Public Housing Collective. We discuss secure and dignified housing as a fundamental human right (rather than a means of wealth creation), housing policy, a lack of attention to public housing, and the sale of public land. Later we talk about the government cuts to tertiary education as a calculated decontruction of the foundation of our educational institutions, it's parallels with the housing and other sectors, and the frightening labour conditions that have led to casualisation, "offboarding", and a health disaster in the aged care sector. Reports co-authored by Prof. Libby Porter:Here is a report on the impacts of the Public Housing Renewal Program in Moreland, Darebin, and Yarra. And here is another report on public land sales in Victoria since 2000 which could have been used for public housing.

Nearly five million residents of greater Melbourne and the Mitchell Shire are set to enter a very different world from midnight Wednesday, with a new six-week lockdown coming into effect. On Tuesday Premier Daniel Andrews reinstated stay at home restrictions across metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire, to the north of the city, to take effect from 11.59pm on July 8.He announced 191 new cases of Covid-19 on Tuesday including 154 under investigation.None of the cases were detected in returned travellers in hotel quarantine in a worrying development showing the virus is established in the community. There are 772 active coronavirus cases in Victoria and 35 people are in hospital. Nine of those patients are in intensive care.THE AREAS AFFECTEDThe restricted areas are Mitchell Shire and 31 local government areas across the greater city: Banyule, Bayside, Boroondara, Brimbank, Cardinia, Casey, Darebin, Frankston, Glen Eira, Greater Dandenong, Hobsons Bay, Hume, Kingston, Knox, Manningham, Maribyrnong, Maroondah, Melbourne, Melton, Mitchell Shire, Monash, Moonee Valley, Moreland, Mornington Peninsula, Nillumbik, Port Phillip, Stonnington, Whitehorse, Whittlesea, Wyndham, Yarra and the Yarra Ranges."2020 has not been the year any of us wanted," Andrews said when announcing the news."Cancelled events. Plans put on pause. Uncertainty about what the future holds."And I guess that's why so many people want to pretend this is over."He stressed the stay at home direction applies to principal places of residence."That means no escaping to holiday homes," Andrews said.According to a summary of the restrictions, second places of residence outside restricted areas cannot be visited except for limited exceptions such as an emergency or maintenance, shared custody, or to stay with an intimate partner who does not live with you.The state's chief health officer Professor Brett Sutton said Victorians have got "six very difficult weeks ahead".The new directions are to continue until 11.59pm on August 19.No one in the impacted areas is allowed to have private gatherings with visitors, and public gatherings are limited to "two people or household members only"."For people who live in regional Victoria, where case numbers remain low, current restrictions will remain the same for now," Andrews said.Regional Victorians cannot enter restricted areas except for "necessary purposes" being necessary goods or services, work and education if necessary, medical care or compassionate reasons.

Victorians have been issued a warning and advised to avoid travelling to and from six local government areas where coronavirus outbreaks have occurred until the source of community transmission has been identified. On Sunday, the Victorian Government identified Hume, Casey, Brimbank, Moreland, Cardinia and Darebin as the focus of current COVID-19 outbreaks as the state’s number of active cases reached 121.The areas cover large parts of Melbourne’s west, northwest, north and southeast. Now the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee has “strongly discouraged” travel to and from those areas while the state prepares to reimpose some restrictions. The committee is the key decision making body for health emergencies and is comprised of all state and territory chief health officers and is chaired by the Australian Chief Health Medical Officer.Sixteen new positive tests were recorded in the past 24 hours after 19 were recorded on Sunday. Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said a taskforce of 50 will begin doorknocking in hot-spots at Brimbank and Cardinia.“They will be people clearly identifiable as public health officials who will be able to provide the community in those hotspot locations with more information and advice about symptoms, about testing locations and about the financial support that is available to people if they are identifying as a close contact and need to be quarantined,” Ms Mikakos said on Monday.“We have been concerned that some people may be taking some risks with their health and with the health of others by still going out into the community even though they might have gone for a test and haven’t yet received a test result or may have been identified as a close contact.“If you go and get tested, you must stay at home until you receive your test result. The 35 new cases over the weekend follow rises of 25, 13, 18 and 21 cases over the previous four days.

Australians are taking to the streets, demanding the federal government declare a climate emergency. Governments declaring a climate emergency is a global trend. So much so that ‘climate emergency’ was the Oxford dictionary’s 2019 word of the year. The first declaration in 2016 was by Darebin council in Victoria, and is credited with starting a movement that is now supported by governments representing 800 million people worldwide… That’s about 1 in 10 people covered. However, Australia as a whole has not followed suit. The important question is, what do we mean by declaring a climate emergency? And, If we did declare a climate emergency, what would that mean for Australia. Who better to answer the question than Australia’s most beloved and trusted scientist, Dr Karl. Dr Karl is joined by Peter Thompson, one of the founders of the People’s Climate assembly, a coalition of environmental groups calling for the declaration.

On today's show we started with a recipe for a quick and simple meal, potato rosti. Don't hold back with the butter! The first ever Melbourne Tea Festival is coming up on May 29, and we spoke to organiser Corinne Smith about how tea is becoming sexy again. The whole point of the festival is to get people out of the teabag, and to learn about the various single origin teas and the best way to prepare them. Plus you get a free teacup, what's not to like? One of our favourite Melbourne events is the Darebin Homemade Wine and Food Festival, which starts tomorrow and culminates on Saturday May 14. Carmelina Di Gugielmo is one of the festival organisers and MC for the day, and we spoke about how imported cultural traditions have been absorbed into Australia's social fabric, as well as the Secret Italian's Business of homemade grappa.Another regular at the Darebin festival is Ingrid Phyland, who has taken out the best olives award two years running. We chatted about how the olive trees planted by immigrants 50 years ago are still bearing fruit and providing us with food today, as well as what she marinates the olives with to achieve such a yummy result.
