Val and Faith are back in the studio for 2024 and kick things off with a catch up on some of the local news over the summer break. We start by sharing our bike moments and for both of us they seem to resolve around red traffic lights and those magic moments when they turn green! Over the weekend a solidarity ride for the Gaza Sunbirds was organised by An Other Collective in Melbourne and Sydney as part of a world wide show of support. You can find out more about the Gaza Sunbirds at their website and donate to support their actions in Gaza providing aid.Darebin Council is holding a special meeting on Monday to consider a recision motion on some safety improvements for Soth Crescent and Newcastle Streets in Darebin. Take a look at the Streets Alive Darebin page for all the background on this and updated information on the original motion and the recision motion. Southside, in Glen Eira, the LXRP are planning to remove 100+ mature trees to build a protected bike lane. On a wide street with plenty os space for pedestrians, parking, moving vehicles, and protected bike lanes it seems incredible that these trees can't be saved. Especially when they are so important to those using active transport modes. You can read more on Glen Eira BUG's Facebook page. And who. could have missed it, but just in case you did, the Walmer Street bridge has re-opened! It has been a sage and much of that saga well documented by Yarra BUG Radio but the bridge is finally done! For now. In bad news, the Footscray Road shared path is now indefinietly closed due to the state government's inability to safely manage truck traffic. What do they do in the rest of the world we wonder? It's a mystery. And from the United States, the War on Cars dive into the horrendous increase in pedestrian fatalities and the uptake of SUVs. Two dates to put in your diary for 2024 have already been anounced: Feburary 25th will see a welcome summer edition of the World Naked Bike Ride in Melbourne and Sunday June 30th is set for the next Melburn Roobaix.

Val and Faith are joined in the studio today by Tommy Quick who has just finished cycling the four most extreme points of Australia. We all share our bike moments, and as you might expect, Tommy's was a bit more epic than the rest! We take a look at some news, including a report in The Guardian over the weekend detailing how Australia's road toll has risen over the past twelve months, particulalry for those on bikes. Followed by the City of Yarra's consultation on Wellington Street, make sure you have your say!We also catch up on the Critical Mass North held on last Friday which saw over 200 people riding to raise awareness for safer infrstcructure for cyclists in Darebin and Yarra. Check out some of the highlights at this thread. Tommy tells us the inspiration behind his challenge to ride to the four most extreme points of Australia, after he suffered a stroke at twelve years old. Discovering that staying active helped him manage the challenges he faced physically and mentally, he set himself the goal of walking the Kokoda Trail before investing in a tricycle and looking for his next challenge. Cycling over 9000kms on his recumbent tricycle Tommy's challenge was made even more difficult after he was hit by a car in 2021 and needed extensive rehabilitation to carry on his journey. So far he has raised over $100,000.00 to raise awareness of young stroke for the Stroke Foundation but you still have time to make a donation yourself! As usual we run out of time far too soon! You can follow Tommy's journey at the4points.org and find all of his social media links there too. Heads up: Tommy is hosting a fundraiser in Moonee Ponds on MOvember 11th. All the details here.

Vi metterò tutte le note e i suoi contatti nelle note del programma e vi invito veramente a esplorare il lavoro di Elodie di perché è pura magia.TRANSLATIONWhen I texted Elodie last summer we hadn't heard from each other for about six years, since I left Australia and a lot of things had happened in those years, other than the fact that I'd left Australia, she too had moved, she had gone to teach in New York, she had then tried to return to Australia, but she had been stuck in New York during the Covid, she had gone to Spain, in short, several things had happened. But when we spoke with a message and then we saw each other in a connection, with zoom I think, it was as if we had never left each other. We talked uninterruptedly for 1 hour and a half, we told each other what we had done and there was great joy in seeing each other again.Elodie is a fantastic person, a person I met, let's say the last year before I left Australia, but from the first moment I saw her this spark immediately clicked, I absolutely wanted to know who this beautiful woman was, fascinating and interesting. I met Elodie because we were both on the women's advisory board of Darebin, which was the Melbourne neighborhood where we both lived. At the time I was preparing the materials to apply for a PhD, which I never did, while she was finishing her PhD. Immediately attracted by her magnetic personality I wanted to sit next to her and we started talking and we never stopped, we became friends and we started seeing hanging out also outside the Darebin women's committee.Elodie is an artist who has a PhD in visual arts and she specializes in the representation of femininity in modern visual art. She has just published a monograph, I tell you the title because the title alone drives me crazy, it is 'Animality and Humanity in French Late Modern Representations of Black Femininity'. Practically Elodie analyzes how women, femininity, especially women who came from Africa, or in any case appear different with respect to the Western world, how they were represented, how the way they were represented did nothing but perpetuate racism, exclusion, as it amplified these aspects. So, why am I telling you about this? Because I just finished leaving a very long, indeed a series of very long messages to Elodie for a project we are working on together. I will put all the notes and her contacts in the program notes and really invite you to explore Elodie's work because it is pure magic.
