There's special magic in the ritual of birthdays. Sadly, many adults relegate the wonder and celebration of birthdays to childhood, believing that it is juvenile to honor this yearly ritual in adulthood. Some want to celebrate their birthdays, but feel that someone else should lead the charge. This often results in feelings of disappointment when others fail to meet your expectations. What if there's another way? This year, consider making your birthday extra special for yourself. Set the tone and rhythm that feels right to you. Make it hum with magic, whether it's a milestone birthday or not. Take time to reflect on the past year and intentionally look ahead on the year to come. Join me in my birthday ritual, may it serve as inspiration to honor your next trip around the sun! Patreon voted, and this week we're diving into Cornershop's 1997 single “Brimful of Asha”—a song that producer Matt, a true fan, has been waiting for us to cover. Known for blending Indian influences with indie rock, Cornershop crafted a unique song that's a heartfelt tribute to a beloved Bollywood playback singer. Though a remix by Fatboy Slim unexpectedly brought the track to modern rock radio, Cornershop stayed largely in the underground, never hitting the charts again. Join us as we explore this one-of-a-kind band's lasting impact and debate whether they deserved more time in the spotlight. Pete Bengry is an internationally acclaimed professional percussionist, specialising in shamanism, sound healing, music production and one-to-one consultations. He is a member of the UK band ‘Cornershop' who achieved a number one hit with the song ‘Brimful of Asha' in 1996. His percussive training began at the age of five years, when he trusted his natural awareness towards percussive rhythms and sound healing. He was lucky enough to travel to Africa at the age of ten years and witnessed the Zulus drum, sing and dance. Being so moved by their presence, he received a drum, which influenced his passion into the practice of shamanism. With a deep focus on the inner core of the essential human being, 'Being in Beauty' provides trainings in shamanism, and the transformative effects within sound healing. Plus musical production, compositions for both practitioners and clients, one-to-one healing sessions and person centred consultations to enhance your healing presence or personal practice. For more information please visit: www.beinginbeauty.comDo you enjoy listening to these podcasts? You might like to support their ongoing journey, by contributing £5 per month and be part of our community. Recorded at the beginning of the 2020 lockdown, this remains one of my favorite interviews in the last five years of working on this project. Tjinder Singh's Cornershop has been a long-standing go-to band in my rotation since I came across them on MTV in the mid nineties, watching back-to-back videos for “Sleep on the Left Side” and their ubiquitous hit “Brimful of Asha.” Since then, they have continued to release tons of great singles, albums and collaborations. It's a tasty mix of Punjabi folk, psychedelic rock, disco, dub, pop and everything in between. I hope you enjoy this deep dive into the world of Cornershop. Castle Hill Cricket Chat. A Huddersfield Cricket League Podcast
The latest episode of Castle Hill Cricket Chat summarised what's happened in the Huddersfield Cricket League since we last met two weeks ago (a lot!). The brand new T20 format launched properly to great success so we gave our thoughts on what we saw. Plus the Sykes Cup R2 and Quarter Final was reviewed and previewed. We also found time to look at the increasing phenomenon of being out on either 49 or 99, had a look at on-this-day in 2019 and discovered what the rainiest Test Match ground in the world was (It's not Old Trafford!). Plus, we gave two marvellous performances by juniors in senior cricket the spotlight.

In this week's episode we release a conversation from early in the pandemic where we speak to Tjinder Singh of Cornershop. We speak primarily about releasing music just before the lockdown and pandemic really hit people's lives and you may have heard this from a previous episodes. But the rest of the episode is all about how Tjinder and Cornershop approach music through writing and production and getting that music in peoples ears. We didn't speak much about Brimful of Asha but that song did soundtrack a part of music history, especially in the late 90's. So that was great to talk a little bit about that song. Thank you to Tjinder for his time and talking to us about England is a Garden and Cornershop.

Cornershop special with Tjinder Singh in conversation with David Eastaugh Cornershop are a British indie rock band best known for their single "Brimful of Asha", originally released in 1997 and, in a remixed version, topping the UK chart in 1998. The band was formed in 1991 by Wolverhampton-born Tjinder Singh (singer, songwriter, and guitar), his brother Avtar Singh (bass guitar, vocals), David Chambers (drums) and Ben Ayres (guitar, keyboards, and tamboura), the first three having previously been members of Preston-based band General Havoc, who released one single (the "Fast Jaspal EP") in 1991. The band name originated from a stereotype referring to British Asians often owning corner shops. Their music is a fusion of Indian music, indie rock, alternative and electronic dance music.

Cornershop are one of the most influential and original British bands of the ’90s but have not performed live for over 10 years. Tom interviewed founding members Tjinder Singh and Ben Ayres, who have been firm friends since college, about frustrations with the record label, both being “massive music freaks”, and Norman Cook remixing their No.1 hit ‘Brimful of Asha’.

Theatre First Episode 243A Brimful of Asha (Malthouse Theatre, Melbourne Australia)In this ring it’s son versus mum. We don’t like his odds.Ravi’s parents rolled with the punches when they learned he wanted to be—gasp!—an entertainer. But unmarried at 27? This will not stand. Canadian actor, writer and director Ravi Jain’s A Brimful of Asha is the hilarious true story of a man whose Indian-born parents want only the best for him, whatever his thoughts on the matter. Derailing his work, arranging prospective brides and exposing their son to unending bouts of humiliation are all just part of their job description. What’s worse: even Ravi’s spotlight isn’t safe from his mother Asha’s meddling. Aided by copious tea and samosas, mother and son take to the stage to spar over the supposed failure that is his life, delivering their respective takes on marriage and freedom, tradition and modernity. Stuffed full of humour and insight, this is the kind of battle only a deep love and affection can afford, and while Asha might not be the trained performer her son is, she’s a force of nature that will not be denied. For more information visit https://malthousetheatre.com.au/whats-on/a-brimful-of-asha Theatre First RSS feed: https://feeds.megaphone.fm/ivetheatrereviews Subscribe, rate and review Theatre First at all good podcatcher apps, including Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts (formerly iTunes), Stitcher, Pocket Casts, CastBox.FM, Podbean, ACast etc.If you're enjoying Theatre First podcast, please share and tell your friends.
