In today's storytime about people finding America, we talk about Ted, my first-ever in-person troll on an Amtrak Train. I also am convinced we can say Christmas again, and how I wish they had a Military weekend boot camp to see how you like it sort of like Catechism. #CHRISTAMASFESTIVAL

Angelo Mantych, aged 41, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of his wife, 28-year-old Marina Placensia, who passed away on an Amtrak train journey from Milwaukee to Denver in 2016. The Denver District Attorney's office announced this following Mantych's arrest on Monday. On August 30, 2016, the family was traveling to their new home in Denver when the tragedy unfolded. Marina Placensia was found "unresponsive" on the train on September 1, just before it arrived in Denver. A doctor on board declared her dead after her husband, Angelo Mantych, notified authorities. An arrest affidavit, reviewed by PEOPLE, stated that Mantych was visibly distressed, vomiting, and crying when officers arrived. The arrest affidavit revealed a disturbing discovery: a "large number" of injuries and bruises on Marina Placensia's body, including her face, mouth, abdomen, and legs. An autopsy report eventually documented 35 injuries, indicating signs of assault or struggle, though her cause of death was not immediately obvious. Angelo Mantych initially claimed that the injuries occurred during their move from Racine, Wisconsin, to Denver. However, suspicions had been raised by friends and family members, who alleged that Mantych had a history of abusing Placensia. They maintained that he should be considered a suspect. Further investigation uncovered allegations of repeated abuse. People familiar with the couple, including friends and neighbors, reported instances of name-calling, punching, and Mantych forcing Placensia to move furniture alone while he watched during their relocation. In September 2023, Dr. Bill Smock, an expert in strangulation and suffocation, issued a report suggesting that suffocation may have been the cause of Placensia's death. The arrest affidavit also detailed Mantych's efforts to hinder Placensia from leaving the allegedly abusive relationship. One neighbor, who claimed to have seen Placensia with bruises, reported that Mantych threatened her after finding text messages advising Placensia to leave. Despite the threats, a judge denied the neighbor's request for a protective order against Mantych. Additionally, it was revealed that Mantych had allegedly forced Placensia to put her phone on speaker during discussions with her family members about leaving the relationship, effectively eavesdropping on their conversations. Angelo Mantych is currently in custody at the Downtown Detention Center without bond, according to jail records. His plea status and legal representation remain unclear at this time. A court appearance for Mantych has been scheduled for November 16, where further developments in this long-awaited case may unfold. This arrest and the troubling details surrounding Marina Placensia's death serve as a stark reminder of the importance of addressing domestic violence and protecting those who may be at risk in abusive relationships. Geralyn Ritter knows about personal and organizational resilience. She was on Amtrak Train #188, which derailed outside Philadelphia in 2015 at 106 miles per hour. The crash killed eight people and injured more than 200. Geralyn was critically wounded. Her doctors use the word “miraculous” to describe her survival and recovery. She also knows about organizational resilience, as the current Head of External Affairs and ESG for Organon, following twelve years at Merck, where she held numerous leadership positions, including Senior Vice President, Corporate Secretary and Assistant General Counsel, Head of Global Public Policy and Corporate Responsibility, and President of the Merck Foundation. She is the author of Bone by Bone: A Memoir of Trauma and Healing. In part one of this two-part podcast, Paul Washington, Executive Director of the ESG Center, speaks with Geralyn about surviving the accident, her road to recovery, and lessons in personal resilience. They discuss the importance of optimism, acceptance, an action orientation, connection, and a sense of purpose. They discuss how these traits are equally important for leaders, organizations, and society. In part two, they go deeper into the subject of organizational resiliency, with practical insights on how to develop a more resilient organization, including the role of ESG in creating a healthy organization, the link between resiliency and sustainability, maintaining resilience in a hybrid work environment, and the value of sharing stories of personal resilience in building a stronger organization. The discussion spans 9/11 to the COVID-19 pandemic to Silicon Valley Bank, with insights for all of us on resilience. Related Resources: Bone by Bone: A Memoir of Trauma and Healing, Geralyn S. Warning: Explicit Conversations About Politics, Culture, & Sexuality Falling in love in Fall flows like sweet sap from the maple tree, the sun rising later and nights lasting longer, optimal conditions for cuddling up with someone you love and falling deeper into the warmth between you. Of course, long-term love has its ups and downs, hair-raising twists and hairpin turns, and so does our Love Train as we ride through some of the glories (gorillas going downtown!) and hazards (climate catastrophes everywhere!) of Autumn Equinox, 2021. At a couple points, this ride gets so intense, our little Love Train almost goes off the rails (like that poor Amtrak Train in Montana, RIP), but we get back on track, choo-choo'ing through the floods, fires and relationship issues of the obscene Anthropocene, the era we're now living through when “human activity has been the dominant influence on climate and the environment.” The world's worst polluter is the U.S. Military-Industrial Complex (MIC). The devastating effects are already upon us, waves of refugees streaming into U.S. borders from Haiti, Guatemala and other places displaced by climate catastrophe, violence, corruption and war, much of it stirred up by the U.S. MIC, as well as its “secret police,” the CIA. It seems like secret police of one kind or another are everywhere—from the LA County Sheriff's office (Sheriff Alex Villaneuva's personal spy force) to Bonoboville's backyard where we're currently being harassed by city inspectors and police (secret & not). If they're not secret, they're often rather stupid police, like the Keystone Cops that let Brian “Dirty” Laundrie get away after he came home with Gabby Petito's van and no Gabby. We also talk about the MSM's (and our own) “Gabby Petito Syndrome,” as well as the sad loss of the world's only official Vagina Museum; Bronx Zoo Gorillas going downtown; Cuomosexual problems and the ridiculous but ominous Trump Virus rally. We contrast the MAGAt cult with a very different kind of human community, a “healing biotope” on a communal, organic, sustainable and very bonoboësque farm in Portugal, living the dream of peace and “free love,” featured on this week's throwback, “Tamera in Bonoboville on Supermoon Eve,” with Terra Nova “global peace ambassador” & Tamera founder Sabine Lichtenfels and Tamera “Next Generation” leader Benjamin von Mendelssohn. Many thanks to UPRM Professor SerenaGaia Anderlini D'Onofrio who arranged Tamera's visit exactly six years ago. What a fantastic show! Read more (Free Assange!) This week our Heroes talk about being stuck on a train, Momo challenge, the new GoPro 7, Spotify Playlists, and well... death. We start of today talking about the recent Momo Challenge. Momo is somewhat of an internet hoax that the media has blown up, and now people are replicating the hoax and scaring children on YouTube. Momo is in videos targeted at children, and she pops up and tells children to do scary things! She is showing up on the YouTube kids app. So we talk a bit about how the YouTube kids app is not a babysitter. We also talk about how people believe that Momo can show up in any video, when in reality, those videos are edited before they are uploaded to YouTube. Next we switch topics and talk about GoPro. From the short story of how Jess bought a GoPro Fusion, and it never worked and she had to fight to return it, to GoPro’s redemption with the release of the GoPro Hero 7 Black, which, she bought and is in love with. The GoPro was used to film Dogs doing Snow Agility which you can see here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A14WUAB6bLI During this discussion, we also find out that Dan has never played with Orbeez before! We talk about what would happen if we put Orbeez outside during winter. Would they freeze and burst? Would they just turn to mush? Maybe we will find out in a future episode. And then the topics switch to the Amtrak Train that was stuck for over 36 hours on the train tracks, while full of people. The people were running low on food, but they did have heat and bathrooms. This brought us to the I was on a Train once topic. When you fall off your train of thought, or your train of thought falls off track. So we try to find the origin of this saying. Talking about the train, switches us into talk about the massive amount of snow Michigan has been getting and the recent blizzard that cause a few people on snow machines to become stuck deep in the woods in large amounts of snow. Two of them were saved by locals, and the other two broke into a little hut and made it through the night. Then we switch to talking about new release music from Grandson, and Bad Flower, which spins us into talk about Spotify playlists, including songs to play at Jess’s funeral!
