Kara Jackson has a mind like a diamond and a voice like maple syrup. She has always been drawn to music as a medium, but you probably first heard of her as the National Youth Poet Laureate. Cutting her teeth as a performing poet gave Jackson a huge public platform as well as a sense of how form can be a foundation for expression. Now, at the ripe age of 23, Jackson has released her stunning debut album, ‘Why Does The Earth Give Us People To Love.' As the title suggests, this album reflects on love and loss. Kara has some fantastic insights about how embracing grief, and sharing it with others, can lead us to a healthier culture. She also shares about how her parents' political convictions have influenced her concept of an artist's role in the world. One of my favorite moments in my conversation is where Kara articulates how she sees her work in conversation with Black artists who came before her. What a gift, to hear a brilliant young artist speak so clearly about how their creativity fits into a bigger tradition. We cannot wait to see what she does next.*** lizzie and Kara talked about Kara's poem “anthem for my belly after eating too much” at the top of the interview. Kara Jackson - "pawnshop" from the 2023 album Why Does The Earth Give People To Love? from September Recordings. As the 2019 National Youth Poet Laureate, Chicago-based singer/songwriter Kara Jackson has a demonstrated command of words, showcased on her debut full-length album, Why Does The Earth Give Us People To Love?. “There's so many words on this project," Kara says via a press statement, "it's important for me that people know I can write things, maybe in ways they aren't used to seeing.” Jackson wrote and recorded the demos for her first LP in her childhood bedroom during the pandemic, reaching out to NNAMDÏ, Kaina, and Sen Morimoto to help record and produce. Today's Song of the Day sets her thoughts against slide guitar in this country-tinged track. She says the song is “about uncovering how worth is subjective,” adding, “It's taking ‘one man's trash is another man's treasure' and reveling in that sentiment, taking pride in the fact that even if people can't understand your value, only you know how priceless you are.” Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week's selections give Andrew and Iain even more of an opportunity than usual to flex their analytical muscles with not one, not two, but THREE published poets among the artists up for discussion. We dive into the hotly-anticipated and hot-off-the-press new track from PJ Harvey, the meaty debut album by former U.S. National Youth Poet Laureate Kara Jackson, and a wonderful collaboration between Constant Follower, Scott William Urquhart and Scottish titan Norman MacCaig. Also, Durand Jones steps out on his own without his Indications, and Spencer Cullum's Coin Collection splits the panel. Something sassy and psicodélic has the Vinyl Word. I kick off this episode with new releases that I dig, which includes Metallica's 72 Seasons, Scowl's Psychic Dance Routine, Kara Jackson's Why Does The Earth Give Us People To Love?, ALMA's Time Machine, and The Last Dinner Party's "Nothing Matters." My special guest includes Pi Stoffers, the guitarist from Hamburg's industrial metal-and-genre-fusing band Lord Of The Lost, set to represent Germany in the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest. Pi discusses the band's new album Blood & Glitter, the moment winning the Eurovision preliminaries, and surprises for this summer's live shows. I also hit him with silly rapid-fire questions!
Indiecast talks about the biggest music news of the week, and this week the biggest music news involved Frank Ocean's disastrous appearance at Coachella, and the subsequent cancelation of his performance this weekend. Steven and Ian try to comprehend the original concept for the performance — apparently it involved an ice rink and an army of skaters? — and why Frank Ocean is the sort of artist that people love precisely because he's likely to bail on a Coachella headliner performance. (7:02)They also talked about the current status of AI music, which this week included a fake near-hit by Drake and The Weeknd and a faux-Oasis record that kinda replicated their mid-'90s prime. Ian tried to talk Steve out of having a nervous breakdown over the destructive potential of artificial intelligence replacing the human race. Was he successful? Find out! (23:17)After a brief conversation over whether 72 Seasons is an AI Metallica record — it kind of sounds like it! — the guys dove into the mailbag (32:55). A listener from Australia asked for a "yay or nay" verdict on the iconic punk band Against Me!, while an audience member from Quebec inquired about their favorite backyard barbecue music (43:10). Is it a surprise that Steven and Ian both had My Morning Jacket on their lists? In Recommendation Corner (55:45), Ian talked up Superviolet, a solo project by an ex-member of the Ohio emo band The Sidekicks, while Steven stumped for singer-songwriter Kara Jackson, whose recent LP Why Does The Earth Give Us People To Love? is a singular jazzy folk gem.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. About: In this episode, 2019 National Youth Poet Laureates and Ambassadors Maren Lovey Wright-Kerr, Jackson Neal, Kara Jackson, and Azura Tyabji participate in a webinar before their spoken word poetry performances at The Library of Congress. We celebrate National Poetry Month, discuss "democracy" as a complex and at times troublesome word for youth poet and artist-activists, the complex privileges and histories of performing in The Library of Congress, and each writer's intentions for their time together as the 2019 cohort. *"speaking" typo -- Maren Lovey Wright-Kerr, not Whiting, and then Haviland Whiting! The day after this webinar, Kara Jackson was named the 2019 National Youth Poet Laureate! Check out her episode below, but also send her your congrats. Chicago Youth Poet Laureate Kara Jackson reads hers and Lucille Clifton's work and then discusses Black feminist embodiment and musical influences -- including but not limited to Jamila Woods, Marvin Gaye, and Joni Mitchell. In the words of Terrance Hayes: "“Kara is amazing! She's a terrific writer of course in the poems but in the prose too. Style plus insight.” Finally: special shout out to Dr. Camea Davis, Urban Word NYC, and The National Youth Poet Laureate Program (see links below) for putting together such a rad collaboration. On Kara Jackson -- Kara Jackson is the daughter of country folks. She is the Youth Poet Laureate of Chicago. Her work investigates a trail of language that leads from the South to the North. Through a multidisciplinary approach, Jackson attempts to document her lineage of divine womanhood in a country that demands its erasure. She is a product of the literary bloodline created by women like Zora Neale Hurston, Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, Buffy Sainte-Marie, and Joan Baez. Jackson is an alum of the solo voice jazz ensemble at Merit School of Music. Jackson received the Scholastic Art and Writing Award for her short story Nursery Rhymes, which won a silver medal at the national level. She is an Adroit Journal mentee. Jackson is an alum of the Spoken Word Club at Oak Park River Forest High school. She represented the school in the Louder Than a Bomb festival from 2016-2018, and in her final year performed on final stage at the Auditorium Theatre, where she was granted the Literary Award by Patricia Smith. Her poems have appeared in POETRY, Frontier Poetry, Rookie Mag, Nimrod Literary Journal, and Saint Heron. She has two articles published in Blavity. She has two poems featured in the latest anthology edited by Kevin Coval, The End of Chiraq. Jackson is a TEDx speaker. She will attend Smith College in the fall of 2019.
