Happy Friday, everyone! While preparing to head into an extended Labor Day weekend here in the U.S., I wasn't originally planning to record an episode. However, something's been building that I couldn't ignore. So, this week's update is a bit different. Shorter. Less news. But arguably more important.Think of this one as a public service announcement, because I've been noticing an alarming trend both in the headlines and in private conversations. People are starting to make life-altering decisions because of AI fear. And unfortunately, much of that fear is being fueled by truly awful advice from high-level tech leaders.So in this abbreviated episode, I break down two growing trends that I believe are putting people at real risk. It's not because of AI itself, but because of how people are reacting to it.With that, let's get into it.⸻The Dangerous Rise of AI Panic DecisionsSome are dropping out of grad school. Others are cashing out their retirement accounts. And many more are quietly rearranging their lives because they believe the AI end times are near. In this first segment, I start by breaking down the realities of the situation then focusing on some real stories. My goal is to share why these reactions, though in some ways grounded in reality and emotionally understandable, can lead to long-term regret. Fear may be loud, but it's a terrible strategy.⸻Terrible Advice from the Top: Why Degrees Still Matter (Sometimes)A Google GenAI executive recently went on record saying young people shouldn't even bother getting law or medical degrees. And, he's not alone. There's a rising wave of tech voices calling for people to abandon traditional career paths altogether. I unpack why this advice is not only reckless, but dangerously out of touch with how work (and systems) actually operate today. Like many things, there are glimmers of truth blown way out of proportion. On the campaign trail, Trump vowed to root out anti-Christian bias and embrace his “beautiful Christians.” A particular form of Christianity – Christian Nationalism – is informing the Trump coalition. Trump has appointed avowed Christian nationalists like head of OMB Russell Vought and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who has said the country is in a “spiritual battle.” In a podcast, Hegseth said, “Our American Crusade is not about literal swords, and our fight is not with guns. Telling Jefferson Lies not only documents the role of revisionist history in the maintenance of Christian nationalism, it addresses what Christian nationalism is about.  This weekend seems like a good time to preview that aspect of the series.  The series starts in two weeks with a look at the origin story of America's Premier Historian, followed by an examination of the cataclysm of The Jefferson Lies of 2012. Then we take a look at a brief year long window when evangelical leaders had a choice about what to do with Christian nationalist revisionist history. There always is a choice, but for a brief window of time, evangelical leaders actually took some steps to hold Christian story tellers accountable. However, almost as quickly as the opportunity came, it vanished into the conspiracy of silence that continues until today. This week we speak with investigative reporter Katherine Stewart, author of a new article The Claremont Institute: The Anti-Democracy Think Tank  from The New Republic delves into the transformation of the Claremont Institute from a traditionally conservative think tank to one that openly promotes anti-democratic and authoritarian ideologies. The institute has become a significant player in the rise of what's called the "New Right," which is increasingly contemptuous of democracy and leans towards extremism.The Claremont Institute has been involved in various conservative events and movements, including National Conservatism conferences and the "war on woke" led by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. The institute has also been associated with key GOP figures like Josh Hawley, J.D. Vance, and Donald Trump.The article argues that the Claremont Institute has moved away from its original mission and is now providing an intellectual veneer to paranoid ideas that view principles of equality and justice as threats to Western civilization. The sweeping rise of Christian nationalism on the right has taken extreme forms since the election of Donald Trump in 2016. From “Stop the Steal” to the storming of the U.S. Capitol and now, the overturn of Roe v. Wade — Christian nationalist rhetoric has undergirded it all. But given that a majority of Americans identify as Christian, faith also isn't going anywhere in our politics. So what would a better relationship between church and state look like?To discuss, Jane Coaston brings together two people who are at the heart of the Christian nationalism debate. Katherine Stewart is the author of “The Power Worshippers: Inside the Dangerous Rise of Religious Nationalism” and has reported on the Christian right for over a decade. Esau McCaulley is a contributing writer for Times Opinion and theologian-in-residence at Progressive Baptist Church in Chicago.Stewart feels that the movement is paving the way to something with graver consequence. “This is a movement that wants to promote theocratic policies,” she says. “But theocracy is really not the end point. It's sort of a means to an end, which is authoritarianism.” McCaulley agrees the danger is real.
