FOENSpiratopn on Uncovering Students' Future Pathways

The WAB Podcast

The Future of Education Now 2025 (#FOEN25) festival, held at WAB from March 13 to 15, brought together students, educators, parents, and thought leaders to explore the evolving landscape of education (add link). In this special episode of the WAB Podcast, we have a recording from a very special panel from FOEN25. Moderated by Stephen Taylor, WAB's Director of Innovation in Learning and Teaching, this conversation was joined by three WAB students: Ryan from Grade 10 and Cali and Hannah from Grade 11, and global education leaders including:    Jason Cummings, Director of Member Engagement of Mastery Transcript Consortium (MTC)  Ellen Heyting, Project Lead for International Networks and Credentialing from Melbourne Metrics  Trillium Hibben, Director of Commission on International Education at New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC)  Jane Larsson, Executive Director of the Council of International Schools (CIS)  Angela Meikle, Global Head of Private IB Schools of International Baccalaureate (IB)  Together, the panel explored how education is evolving beyond traditional assessments, emphasizing competency-based learning and the recognition of student-driven achievements. Speakers highlighted how new tools and approaches are providing a more holistic view of student progress, moving beyond grades to assess real-world skills and competencies. Schools and universities are shifting towards formative, competency-based assessments that allow students to showcase not just what they know, but what they can do.  Students shared how their projects—ranging from scientific research to organizing student-led initiatives—illustrate the impact of hands-on, real-world learning. Their experiences underscored how students thrive when given opportunities to apply their knowledge beyond the classroom. The discussion also emphasized the need for new ways to credential essential skills such as collaboration, ethical decision-making, and leadership.  Another key theme was the increasing role of student voices in shaping education. Schools and organizations are moving towards more collaborative models, ensuring that students are active participants in designing their learning experiences. Accreditation processes are also evolving, focusing more on the impact of education rather than compliance, to better support students in a rapidly changing world.  As the session concluded, the panelists expressed optimism about the future of education, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between schools, universities, and accreditation bodies to create learning environments that develop both knowledge and essential competencies. To hear the full discussion, tune in to this extra special episode of the WAB Podcast.

St Johnstone have hit the ground running in the January transfer window, as have Dundee United. In this week's Talking Football podcast, Jim Spence, Sean Hamilton and Eric Nicolson discuss the business both clubs have concluded and the possible transformative effect strikers Nadir Ciftci and Tony Watt may have. Possible high profile departures, Leigh Griffiths and Jason Cummings, dominate the Dundee agenda. Have Kilmarnock effectively ended the Championship title race with the appointment of Derek McInnes? And who is Dick Campbell trying to kid?

So the Twa Teams lads have had to console themselves by talking up the bright tangerine future thanks to their youthful show at Ibrox and if we'll see Jason Cummings feature for Dundee again. In Episode 72 Derek talks to Scottish footballer Jordan McGhee. Jordan, who currently plays for Dundee Football Club in the Scottish Premiership, talks about his career to date and looks forward to the season ahead. The pair discuss his journey from coming through the ranks at Hearts when the club was going through a challenging period; making his debut at 16, scoring on his second appearance, giving away a penalty in the Edinburgh derby before moving to Middlesbrough on loan. Following a spell in England Mcghee went to Falkirk where he captained the side and had a very positive relationship with the Bairns supporters despite being relegated to League 1. In June 2019, McGhee signed a two-year deal with Dundee, who had been relegated to the Championship the previous season. Jordan became a key figure for the Dark Blues, impressing in a variety of different positions and would be voted by his teammates as Dundee's Player's Player of the Year at the end of the season. Manager James McPake then named him as the captain ahead of the new season which saw them promoted back to the Premiership. Derek and Jordan discuss the play-off games where Jordan netted 3 important goals, his relationship with teammates like Jason Cummings, Charlie Adam and what it's like to play for such a big club.

We also spoke to Matt Burgess the Graphic Designer and Videographer who talked us through his design process, the role the fans wants and needs play on that, the need for consistent branding at a football club and just where he gets his drone and his dislike of the rain! Finally we spoke with Lewis Poole about the process he has for undertaking interviews, the bond that develops with player and manager and the trust that's needed, what to expect from this years programme and the importance of triple checking everything! Lots more than all that including an enlightening chat about the time the club put together content to go out for a signing that then never happened (very recently!) People preparing to emigrate to Canada often have one or more of the following misconceptions about the Canadian healthcare system: “Medicare works the same across the country,” or “Coverage is immediate upon arrival,” or “Emergency medical care is covered even if I have a waiting period”. In this episode Jason Cummings joins me to debunk these common misconceptions and set the record straight for all newcomers to Canada. These misconceptions can be costly to a newcomer. For instance, each year tens of thousands of new residents of Canada settle in a Province or Territory that has a waiting period for public health coverage (Medicare). During a Medicare waiting period, “un-insured residents” are responsible to pay for hospital and medical services, even in an emergency, and costs can be very high, even catastrophic. The same risk can arise when a temporary resident loses Medicare eligibility due to the expiry of a work or study permit. In this episode Canadian health insurance broker Jason Cummings, General Manager of David Cummings Insurance Services Ltd, joined me to help shed some light on what new permanent residents and temporary residents face when on-boarding into the “Canadian health system” and to offer some consumer education insights about the types of private medical insurance used to cover Medicare gaps. Jason Cummings - General Manager of David Cummings Insurance Services Ltd. (DCIS). Jason Cummings comes to work motivated to make a positive difference in people's lives. With over 20 years' experience, Jason is a recognized expert in health and travel insurance who has been interviewed for CBC's The National, CBC News Vancouver, and CBC Radio and he presents information about Canada's healthcare system and private health insurance in live workshops and online. Jason leads the DCIS team of agents and associates with the vision of relentlessly championing duty of care, good faith, and the dignity of each person. Through a network of trusted advisors DCIS also provides personal life insurance, disability insurance, and group benefits. The DCIS team are committed to ensuring individuals, families, and organizations are well advised, offered competitive insurance solutions, equipped for successful use of their insurance, and supported at time of claim. In this episode Jason shared valuable insights for prospective immigrants and temporary residents about on-boarding into the Canadian health system: Public health coverage does not operate the same across Canada. Before departing for Canada, learn how Medicare eligibility and enrolment works in the Province or Territory you will settle in. New Permanent Residents face a Medicare waiting period (approx.3 months) in three Provinces and all Territories. Be sure to buy interim (private) medical insurance for any Medicare waiting period or gap. Work permit holders (and study permit holders) face a more complex set of rules and variables in regard to Medicare eligibility and maintaining Medicare coverage. Not all interim medical plans are created equally. Give the purchase of medical insurance the consideration due to any important financial decision. Whether on your own, or with the help of an insurance broker, be informed about the types of plan available, and especially about the plan you choose to buy. While Cove Rangers and East Fife win the Highland and League Two titles. Sorry, like Hampden at the Petrofac Training Cup final we're now all out of pies. Sometimes we talk about the football involved across 240 minutes of action and two penalty shootouts, before moving on to look ahead to the post-split predictions and some hopeful pie in the sky charity bet picks.
