In this episode of Biographers in Conversation, Patchen Barss chats with Dr Gabriella Kelly-Davies about his choices while crafting The Impossible Man: Roger Penrose and the Cost of Genius, the biography of Nobel Prize-winning physicist Roger Penrose.      Here's what you'll discover in this episode:   Patchen Barss's painstaking research strategy   How Patchen grasped complicated information about quantum physics and mathematics   How he crafted erudite, poetic and propulsive narrative from seemingly incomprehensible scientific information and mathematical equations   How he balanced Roger Penrose's scientific, public, personal and inner lives to craft a kaleidoscopic portrait of an extraordinary human being   How he represented Roger's relationship difficulties truthfully and with sensitivity and dignity   How Patchen navigated the perils of writing about a 93-year-old living subject who has a strong autobiographical voice   Patchen's response to the question: ‘Who gets to be a genius, and who makes the sacrifices that allow an individual to be one?'

When he was six years old, Roger Penrose discovered a sundial in a clearing near his house. Through that machine made of light, shadow, and time, Roger glimpsed a “world behind the world” of transcendently beautiful geometry. It spurred him on a journey to become one of the world's most influential mathematicians, philosophers, and physicists. Penrose would prove the limitations of general relativity, set a new agenda for theoretical physics, and astound colleagues and admirers with the elegance and beauty of his discoveries. However, as Patchen Barss documents in The Impossible Man: Roger Penrose and the Cost of Genius (Basic Books, 2024), success came at a price: He was attuned to the secrets of the universe, but struggled to connect with loved ones, especially the women who care for or worked with him. Both erudite and poetic, The Impossible Man draws on years of research and interviews, as well as previously unopened archives to present a moving portrait of Penrose the Nobel Prize-winning scientist and Roger the human being. It reveals not just the extraordinary life of Roger Penrose, but asks who gets to be a genius, and who makes the sacrifices that allow one man to be one. Learn more about your ad choices. James Devereux's Clovis Collection is the result of labored experiments by the artist to literally chip hot glass like stone. Having perfected this unusual technique, he produces breathtaking, monolithic objects with smooth lines juxtaposed with fractured edges. Creating these pieces in subtle tones places the focus on the texture and form of each component. Devereux states: “A blow too hard would simply shatter the piece, too light a tap would crush the surface. After flame polishing, the meandering edges despite their appearance are not sharp, but smooth to the touch.” Having worked with many prominent names within the industry in a host of roles including collaborating artist, facilitator, instructor and demonstrator, Devereux's impact within British and international glass to date has been far reaching. Positioned as one of the most active glass artists currently working in the UK, it is the unique combination of abundant skills and technique with an eye for detail that has made him a highly respected and sought-after glass craftsman.  Starting in the industry at the age of 15 thanks to a work experience placement at Bath Aqua Glass, Devereux worked at a crystal factory making stemware, tableware and gifts. He subsequently studied glass for three years at Wolverhampton University before opening his first hotshop in the inspiring Wiltshire countryside. In 2009, Devereux took a job as the glass technician at the Royal College of Art (RCA) in London before attending the college as a student. He states: “RCA opened my eyes to everything else going on in glass, including new contacts and opportunities that remain at the core of my career.” After leaving London in 2013, Devereux and fellow glass artist Katharine Huskie established a new studio together. Devereux and Huskie Glassworks is a custom-built studio dedicated to creating innovating and exciting glass for designers and artists from the UK and overseas. Over the years, Devereux and Huskie Glassworks has become known for large-scale glass sculpture that pushes the boundaries of the material. Devereux also sells glass tools and supplies through his business, Glass Toolbox. Visit https://www.glasstoolbox.co.uk. Devereux and US artist David Patchen first met through social media and at the Glass Art Society's (GAS) conference in Murano, but their unique collaboration didn't officially begin until 2019 in San Francisco. United in harmony, their collaborative artworks combine Patchen's murrine patterns and Devereux's intrinsic forms. Making their first collaborative Clovis sculpture at a fundraising party and their second during a demo for hundreds of people at GAS Tacoma, their relationship continued during Covid with Patchen shipping pattern blanks from San Francisco to Devereux in the UK. Patchen makes murrine with color combinations he's interested in exploring – cutting and arranging different pieces together to achieve the perfect mosaic for blowing. Devereux then uses these intricate patterns to sculpt and breathe life into the artwork.  Says Patchen: “My collaboration with James has been going strong over the past year. We began this project just before the pandemic and have completed a dozen sculptures without the benefit of working in the studio together. We communicate via text and email with me making the patterns in San Francisco and shipping James patterned murrine blanks (thick densly-patterned cups) which he heats up in his studio in England to create the finished sculptural forms. Aside from being distinctive and beautiful forms, a particularly interesting aspect of these is the hot-chipped edge. James creates this edge texture by carefully hammering the sculpture while the glass is hot on the punty, chipping away chunks of glass, exposing the interior and creating the scalloped edge. You can see a short video on my Instagram of James chipping the second Clovis we made in San Francisco at the beginning of our collaboration.” Devereux is currently exploring a new series, Diodes, continuing his look at collectable obsolete objects. These works combine multiple materials, processes and skills as well as distorted Morse code to look at what we consider current or outdated technology or communication. Having just returned from Biot International Glass Festival, and travels to Sweden and Istanbul, the artist discusses his history and works in glass.

He is also a Contributor for Forbes and his LinkedIn Learning course, How to Be Both Likable And Assertive, was the most popular course on the platform in July of 2021. He is the author of How to Have Difficult Conversations About Race: Practical Tools for Necessary Change in the Workplace and Beyond*. In this conversation, Kwame and I discuss how to begin a difficult conversation about race. We explore the key questions that each of us should ask ourselves so that we can determine in advance what we want to gain from a tough conversation. Finally, we look at the three critical things to say in the first 30 seconds that will help you start an important conversation that helps everybody move forward. Key Points It's hard for someone else to appreciate how much of a person's identity affects every other area of their lives until you've lived it. People explain away racism because they don't like it and don't want it to be true. Whether you think a conversation is about race or not, if it's about race for the other person then you're having a conversation about race. There questions to ask yourself before a conversation: What do I hope to accomplish in this conversation? Given what I know about them and the situation, what is likely to be their goal? What are three questions I can ask them that will help me to understand their position? Use situation, impact, and invitation as the starting point for a difficult conversation. Remote code execution is uiteindelijk enorm gevaarlijk. Daarom kreeg Log4Shell een severity score van 10 uit 10. We spreken in deze Techzine Talks met Coen Goedegebure,  Founder and Managing Partner at Scyon.

In September of this year, the Texas Heartbeat bill went into effect. The battle for life is on a fast track to the supreme court.  This week I had the opportunity to interview a man very involved in fighting for the value of life, Joel Patchen. Joel is the author of five books including the “ Who Am I” bible study, a comprehensive overview of the value and dignity of life from the biblical perspective.  Joel's life was radically changed after 40 days spent with his daughter, Brooke, in a neonatal intensive care unit. His daughter challenged everything he thought he knew about life, abortion, and the value of the human person. As an educator and the son of a Christian minister, Joel thought he had a pretty good handle on life. But he was wrong! Life was so much more than he knew.  During the winter of 2002/2003, life took on a new dimension for Joel. His daughter Brooke was born at 29 weeks gestation, almost three months before her due date, on December 13, 2002. Her arrival changed Joel's life—He would never be the same!  During the next 39 days that she lived on earth, he witnessed firsthand her development. He had the privilege of watching Brooke and the other babies ranging from 24 to 38 weeks gestation grow and mature in plain sight. This was the first time in his life that he faced the concrete reality of fetal development and life in the womb. His experience with these children, who should still have been in the womb, completely refuted the lies in our culture concerning preborn babies. As he watched the medical staff care for these little ones, it gripped him that several other children at this stage of development are aborted in our country every day. It was after this revelation and experience with Brooke that he began my journey to actively defend the preborn and fight against abortion.

Talking Out Your Glass podcast

David Patchen: Satisfying the Artist and Craftsman Within Like a beautiful sea creature, David Patchen’s sculpture makes one marvel at how such detail, color, and complexity could be possible within its graceful form. Influenced by textiles, ethnically distinct colors and shapes, and the marine environment, the artist creates multi-layered cane and murrine, then contrasts complimentary tertiary tones in complex woven patterns. The resulting work reflects the artist’s desire to explore a variety of ideas simultaneously and challenges the role of glass in the art world at large. Patchen says: “I find glass as seductive as it is challenging. As a particularly unforgiving medium, an artist has endless creative opportunities to design for its unique properties — the only limitations are their imagination and skill in working with the material. I’ve always been captivated by how one can use this enigmatic material to achieve virtually any form, hold elements in suspension, and achieve great detail or soft abstraction. Its flexibility as a medium is matched by the difficulty it presents in using it to execute precise work.” Patchen’s process begins with meticulously planning and designing colors and patterns. After cane and murrine is pulled, the artist carefully composes these elements to design the final work, sometimes days prior to blowing it. This process of thoughtful creativity contrasts with the immediacy of executing work in the hotshop, where the limited window to shape molten glass demands precision and urgency.  Primarily self-taught, Patchen grew his skills through experimentation informed by observing talented local artists and a few visits with Afro Celotto, maestro and former assistant to Lino Tagliapietra from Murano, Italy. He has served as guest artist at the Corning Museum of Glass, studied at the Pilchuck Glass School, and in 2010 was selected as Artist in Residence in Seto City, Japan, spending a month lecturing and demonstrating his work through an award from the Seto City Art and Cultural Foundation. His book David Patchen, Glass is in the permanent collection of the Rakow Library at the Corning Museum of Glass and the Fondazione Giorgio Cini, Centro Studi del Vetro (Glass Study Center Library) in Venice, Italy. Actively involved in the glass arts community, Patchen serves as Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Directors at Public Glass, San Francisco’s center for glass art, where he maintains a private studio. He is also a member of the Pilchuck Leadership Council and former member of the Board of Directors of the Glass Alliance of Northern California (GLANC).  Patchen recently installed his latest sculpture, Dewdrops, on a ship off the coast of Germany. Other notable projects include collaborations with James Deveraux, Rob Stern, and earlier with Toland Sand and Mark Leputa. From January 16 – 18, 2020, the artist will present a Visiting Artist demo and show at Benzaiten Center for the Arts, Lake Worth, Florida. From May 16 – 17, Kittrell Riffkind Art Glass, Dallas, Texas, will host Patchen’s solo show and demo.

Vad sägs om Ghost in the Shell, The Fate of the Furious, Baywatch, John Wick 2, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Logan, Transformers Last Knight, The Cure For Wellness, Stranger Things säsong 2 och många fler?

Selbstfahrende Autos waren gestern.
