We talk about how she came into the role as coach after advocating to create a team, and how she has developed the program to be undefeated for 2 seasons in the Hockomock League, win the Sectionals this year, take 2nd in the State and then 1st at New England. What does the team do from here? It may be something of a building opportunity but the team is positioned to do good things next year and going forward. Coaching both a track racing cyclist and a mountain biking cyclist requires an entirely dual approach. On the mountain biking side, Kristin is working with Hayley Batten's innate lack of fear to ride the most technical of sections as well as encouraging her through her racing despite inconsistent results. On the track side, she is focused on transitioning Emma White from cyclocross racing to pushing massive power for standing starts and dialing in minute aspects of her aerodynamic setup. Listen as Coach Kristin Armstrong discusses leveraging her knowledge about the science and the art of coaching, as well as heat training to bring these two promising young athletes to Tokyo.

Emma White, who grew up in Duanesburg, is now in Colorado Springs training for the Tokyo Olympics. She started her journey as a competitive road and cyclocross cyclist, following her older brother, Curtis. At 16, she made the junior boys' team — those seven boys, now men, are still her best friends — and turned professional at 18. In 2018, she was invited to a Talent ID camp for USA Cycling. When she was told she had a chance at the Olympics, White went for it. After she and her teammates won the world championship in Berlin in 2020, they were primed for the Olympics — only to be gutted, delayed a year because of the pandemic. She has kept her balance after the suicide of a close friend and teammate, and she relies on the humanity of her coach. White and her teammates devote their days to rigorous training, followed by sauna sessions, without water, to get their bodies used to the discomfort they expect in Tokyo. Emma White is poised to win. — Photo from Emma White See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This episode I am joined by Emma White, Children and Youth Coordinator at Hobsons Bay Libraries and the current Convenor of the Public Libraries Victoria, Children's and Youth Services Special Interest Group! Emma has worked in public libraries for over 10 years, and is a passionate advocate for children and young people in library spaces. Emma has spent lockdown moving her cat off her keyboard during Zoom meetings, continuing home renovations with her partner and learning to make her own polymer clay earrings. This episode we are talking about finding the best resources for kids in lockdown, plugging local libraries (of course!), our favourite children's books and just what we would pair with them for a fabulous reading experience! The Babysitters Club series by Ann M. Martin Kristy's Great Idea Book #1 Kristy thinks the Baby-sitters Club is a great idea. She and her friends Claudia, Stacey, and Mary Anne all love taking care of kids. A club will give them the chance to have lots of fun - and make tons of money. But nobody counted on crank calls, uncontrollable two-year-olds, wild pets, and parents who don't always tell the truth. And then there's Stacey, who's acting more and more mysterious. Having a baby-sitters club isn't easy, but Kristy and her friends aren't giving up until they get it right! Emma loves this series for its wonderful portrayal of young girls beginning to find their way as young women, its focus on friendship and community and for how good the tv series adaptation has been! She pairs this series with a Jellybean cocktail - a nostalgic classic, sweet but not too sweet, with enough colour, brightness and freshness and oomph for the whole club! Jellybeans only for the tweens of course ;) Amazing Australian Women: Twelve Women Who Shaped History by Pamela Freeman and Sophie Beer Meet twelve amazing Australian women who have changed the world, in small ways and large. Some of them are world famous, like Annette Kellerman and Nellie Melba. Some of them are famous in Australia, like Mary Reibey and Edith Cowan. All of them deserve to be famous and admired. These women are the warriors who paved the way for the artists, business owners, scientists, singers, politicians, actors, sports champions, adventurers, activists and innovators of Australia today. Emma loves how inspiring and informative this book is. Whilst it is a junior non fiction book it is told in a wonderfully readable narrative way which makes you want to find out more about each of these amazing women. She paired this amazing Australian book with an amazing Australian gin! The Kangaroo Island Spirits Mulberry Gin makes for a pretty darn delicious gin and tonic, punchy, sweet and tart and quintessentially Australian.

Emma White wants to create smiles that you won’t want to hide. A former English & Drama teacher, Emma is these days the Founder and CEO of an innovative and brilliantly simply business called OMU. Taking orthodontics (braces) and dental hygiene into schools, OMU stands for Orthodontic Mobile Unit. Experience running their Open Wide dental practice led to three lightbulb moments. Lightbulb moment #1 was when Emma realised that dental surgeries were not always a comfortable place for children and decided to “change things up a bit”. She introduced “Open Wide Days” just for kids. “All the kids that come to us enjoy coming to see the dentist. Balloons, face painting, they can dress up. We talk teeth and nutrition. It’s a fun time. A really good thing”. Lightbulb moment #2 was when her dentist husband Ben noticed that many parents and children arriving at the practice were often stressed. Having to collect children from school, traffic, permission from the school itself - all for a 10 minute appointment. Their idea - literally, to take the practice to the school. They bought a bus, fitted it out as a full on mobile surgery, painted it bright and hit the road. “Schools love it, parents love it and the kids are happy and relaxed”. Their Teeth Academy (lightbulb moment #3) provides free workshops to the schools, educating and informing the children around dental hygiene and normalising braces in a relaxed and cool way. Emma’s passion for her work shines almost as bright as her smile in this whiter than white episode Smash The Box is a personal development business. Asha Jefferies: Asha is an artist who has been around for a while, commanding audiences with her honest and brutal lyrics combined with a striking vocal presence. First releasing a single in 2016 called ‘Honey, Save Me From My Falsehoods’, Asha garnered national attention and was still under age as she played some of the biggest stages in the country. Asha has been refining her sound over the years growing as an artist and in 2017 released the single ‘Coburg’ just before 2018s massive hit ‘Chaos’. Assembling a band, playing consistently and releasing singles to a wide fanbase cumulated in the release of her debut EP ‘Hold Yourself Together’ which was released in February 2019. When Asha performs, she can cradle you in the palm of her hand as she weaves these intimate stories that are relatable but also make you feel like your gaining a true insight into her feelings. Recorded live at the The Triffid on the 9th of March 2019. June Low: June Low are a four piece band from Brisbane who perform a style of indie rock with deep earthy undertone. The group is formed from the songwriter Emma White on vocals and she assembled some amazing players to create this band; Brian Mann on lead guitar, Jane Elliot on bass and Sean Clift on percussion. They released their debut album in 2015 called ‘Exhale’, and have followed it up with ‘Heart Gallop’ in 2017 and recently with ‘The Letter’, which was released in March of 2019. They have a sound that feels nostalgic, as if you’ve always known them even when they release new tracks, they nestle in a place deep in your heart. They self described themselves as best listened to with a glass of red and hey, drink responsibly but maybe it wouldn’t go astray. Recorded live at The Bearded Lady on the 10th of May 2018.
