They roamed through town leaving a trail of chaos in their wake. Some worshipped them whilst others feared them – that was all part of the charm. They cared little for the thoughts of others anyway, that was just an afterthought preceded by the mischief that they might cause upon any given evening. As the sunset they gathered on the street corners in gangs to dance and chant, make merriment and cause trouble. They were baddies all right. As bad as they came. One day they might regret all of this but as the weekend rolled in at full speed, they too prepared themselves for the heat of the night ahead. Tom Esselle is set to release a new EP on Rhythm Section International – the now long running London based record label continues its voyage through the meandering world of house music. This time its with a carefully curated collection of tracks which draw for the bounce as much as they deliver on the feels beneath.
"A system that's equal doesn't benefit the people that have the power." The Rhythm Section International founder talks about creating opportunities for Black artists and entrepreneurs, Caribbean conviviality and his abiding love for Peckham. Bradley Zero, the DJ and founder of the label Rhythm Section International, is known for his commitment to his community. Zero grew up in a rich Caribbean culture in Leeds, where he and his family gathered in friends' living rooms to listen to music and eat home-cooked food. In opening Jumbi—the bar and listening space in London's Southeast neighborhood, Peckham—Zero has attempted to recreate this lively Caribbean conviviality. The venue is filled with his own personal record collection and one turntable. His style (as reflected in his imprint) celebrates house, soul, disco, funk and various shades of music from the afro-Caribbean diaspora. In this RA Exchange, he talks about how the neighborhood has changed in the time he's been based there, how and when his career exploded from local pool hall gigs to an active global touring schedule and why he decided to study for an MBA. October is British Black History Month in the UK, and in this interview, Zero also discusses ways that he hopes to empower the Black British community to start their own businesses and assert power from the top echelons of the music industry. Rhythm Section International has started a touring series of free masterclasses called Future Proof, in which Zero and his team invite guests to teach hard skills on business and label management, how to cultivate a brand and much more. Listen to the episode in full.

"It's through collaboration that I've grown most with my sound." In this collaboration with Rhythm Section, the multi-instrumentalist talks about how he found his style and started his career. Jordan Rakei is a self-made musician. A multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and producer whose work dips into soul, hip-hop and electronic music, he moved to London from New Zealand, giving himself a four-month "buffer budget" to get his career off the ground. Now, he's released on Ninja Tune and Rhythm Section International, and has collaborated with a number of Grammy- and Oscar-award-nominated artists. But his journey wasn't easy, as he explains in this masterclass moderated by Roy Mills and Rhythm Section's Bradley Zero. Rakei talks about how to build a career as an independent artist, why he transitioned from working alone to working with a big agency, signing deals with labels, and living close to the edge in an expensive city. It's the first in a three-part series called Future Proof hosted by Rhythm Section International, all of which explore facets of creating and sustaining a career as a musician. This episode was recorded live in May, and you can watch video shorts from the talk on YouTube. Listen to their conversation in full. The Bside of... Rhythm Section Today is the day we release the highly anticipated first episode of our new ‘The Bside of…' series. A Bside broadcast that showcases the very best of a record label's ‘other side'. A journey through many of the hidden gems and overlooked releases from our favourite record labels. To kick things off we are lucky enough to present you with one of the very best labels in present times, not only one of the best in London, or the UK, or even Europe, but a record label that is truly world class: Rhythm Section !!! This brainchild of Bradley Zero, is an ever-growing creative collective of like minded music lovers who have been throwing parities in Peckham since 2009. Their expansion from a grassroots party in London to a world renowned brand of record labels, radio shows, and studio spaces has been a phenomenal spectacle for those with their fingers on the pulse. And, it was the birth of Rhythm Section International in 2014 that truly consolidated their name among the greats: now boasting a whole host of releases from the scenes most respected artists and local talents alike : Al Dobson Jr., Henry Wu, Chaos In The CBD, FYI Chris, Earth Trax, and many many more… including some of our own esteemed guests - Hidden Spheres, Duke Hugh, and Rüf Dug. Our host, Z-Lovecraft (AKA Mali), is a resident and vital member of the Rhythm Section family. So what better way to begin this amazing Rhythm Section mixtape than with his very own edit of a past Bside Guest's (Rüf Dug) amazing track ‘Sunrise' under his Mali-I alias. From there on in it is a mesmerising exploration of the labels Bsides - Sweet soothing vocals from 30/70, smooth jazzy vibes courtesy of Pinty, dipping into the deep with Bad Channel and Alexander Falk on their sub label International Black. A dubstep track from Prequel, some tasty breaks from Mallard, before bringing it back to Earth Rain with Saul. This one has it all! Thanks again to Rhythm Section and Z-Lovecraft for showcasing their favourite Bsides from one of the very best labels in the business. Episode 26 of the Bside live series is brought to you by world class DJ and Producer, passionate vinyl digger and record store owner, NTS Radio host, member of Cherry Garcia, Rüf Kutz bossman, and long time staple of Manchester's booming nightlife... Ruf Dug. ‘Rüf Dug presents the Committee', released on Rhythm Section International in April last year, provided one of our favourite Bsides of 2019, thanks to a collaborative approach which brought us two amazing tracks: ‘All U Get 2 Do' with Bradley Zero and ‘Sunrise' with Natalie Wildgoose. (listen here -https://rufdug.bandcamp.com/tr…/sunrise-ft-natalie-wildgoose) His Bside mixtape remains true to his electrifying style. Intricate details, groovy basslines, rhythmic percussions and euphoric horns. This a true showcase of his amazing record collection and proof of his turntable talents as you move through ambient soundscape into a deep funky throb, a few deliciously dubby numbers and a some soulful ska. We also bring you a (likely) exclusive exposure of his most expensive Bside which the man himself describes as “really shit”. But don't worry he'll let you listen to the “real side” which we're sure you'll agree is “mega”. Huge thanks to Ruf Dug for agreeing to come on the show! The music industry is filled with sound people who have a passion for sharing music, we really appreciated his time and everyone else we have had on the show. Give Ruf Dug some support. Next month Rhythm Section International will release an album from Australian three man outfit Retiree. The long form assortment of abstract cuts and intriguing twists has a conceptual nature and has allowed the group to focus on a variety of themes whilst exploring the deinition of "house" and "home". The group is made up of Matt Crowley, Tori Holleman and Marco Vella who each compose various elements on the new forthcoming LP. Bradley Zero, the man behind Rhythm Section, has long since formed a close bond with the Australian musical community and has regularly championed upcoming artists from the country. Their appearance makes sense. We invited the group to record a mix for us which features music by the likes of Visible Cloaks, Gerry Read and Tori Holleman.
