Anna B Savage, die Sleaford Mods, The Little Pest, Coppe, Penelope Isles und Dina Ipavic. Neben Titeln des neuen Albums gibt auch diverse Klassiker aus der mittlerweile 35 jährigen Geschichte von Orbital.
Welcome to another episode of Outrage + Optimism! In this episode, co-host Christiana Figueres is joined by an all-female cast. You'll hear from climate activist Abigael (Abbie) Kima from Kenya about her recent visit with His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, and Isabel Cavelier, Colombian climate activist and recent recipient of the prestigious Climate Breakthrough Award, an initiative of the Climate Breakthrough Project. We also feature music from the British indie rock duo, Penelope Isles. First, Abbie Kima brings Christiana up to date with her podcast, the Hali Hewa Podcast一“Hali ya Hewa” is Swahili for “climate”一covering indigenous people, women, and climate emergencies from the African perspective. Kima also recounts her extraordinary (collective) meeting with the Dalai Lama at the Mind & Life Institute in Dharamsala. She discusses his teachings about how oneness across all people is innately linked to global climate action. Next, Christiana chats with Isabel Cavelier about her fascinating climate journey. Isabel touches on her early work helping develop the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs一the United Nations framework for global peace and prosperity一her climate action organization Transforma, and her work in the climate movement today. They also touch on Cavelier's Climate Breakthrough Award, one of the field's most distinguished honors. Finally, we close the episode with indie rock band Penelope Isles's new release, “Underwater Record Store.” See you next week! i’ve got this week and then one more week on the kcsb programming schedule and then i’ll go back to just doing the podcast. it was very gracious of kcsb.org to allow me and other alumni programmers to come back remotely when the pandemic started but it looks like most folks are going back to in-person at this point. plus, maybe it will encourage me to check out kdvs.org and kdrt.org - the two community stations in davis. i think one of the important things about these stations is that they have limited syndicated programs and focus on locally made content. sooo, goodbye santa barbara, for real this time. love ya forever!DOWNLOAD/STREAM RECORDING00:00 (intro by omar)00:20 Sister Mantos “Anoche Me Enamore” Songs in the Key of Destroy Capitalism04:08 Mort Garson “Symphony for a Spider Plant” Mother Earth’s Plantasia06:45 Jes Kramer “The Same” Jes Kramer10:14 Alice Skye “Friends with Feelings” Friends with Feelings14:26 Rat Paws “Bad Arcade” Let’s Cool17:01 Powerplant “Snake Eyes” People In The Sun19:11 Lushloss “Gutter” Asking22:34 Dustin Wong “spring / summer” seasons33:42 Homebody “Slow Design” Human Ecstasy35:18 MANEKA “Salty (feat. Penelope Isles - Play It Cool (Alt Mix) - a 2022 single on Bella Union. It's a family affair for Penelope Isles, the sibling songwriting duo of Lily and Jack Wolter, who have channeled the energy of their UK homeland the Isle of Man for some seriously dreamy sounds over the course of two records. Now based in Brighton, their latest record, 2021's Which Way To Happy, sees the band recruit the help of Henry Nicholson, Joe Taylor, and Hannah Feenstra to fill out their expansive soundscapes for an intoxicating leap forward. Still, a lot of those sounds aren't exactly accurate to what the band is playing on tour which is why they decided to re-imagine a few of those songs and release them as alternate mixes. Our Song of the Day (and third from Penelope Isles) is the alternate mix of stand-out track “Play It Cool.” Slightly stripped down but no less gorgeous, bouncy, and effervescent, the song only builds excitement to see the band deliver the songs on stage. This is what they had to say about the single: “We have been working on how to re-imagine songs from Which Way To Happy for our festival shows this summer…. Play It Cool seemed to fall into place a lot easier than others… maybe because we stripped a lot of things away that are in the album version, so we felt that it would be ‘cool' to re-mix and create an alternative version, where the arrangement and sonics are more like how we are doing it live. Everything is pretty hard panned in the stereo mix, so the drums are on one side and the bass on the other. It's kind of fun to pan to one side and isolate things. Inspired by those early Byrds and Beatles mixes.” Penelope Isles is currently on tour behind Which Way To Happy but, unfortunately, currently solely in Europe and the UK. Watch their 2019 KEXP in-studio performance at the link below while we eagerly wait for them to hop the pond. This week's show covers new music from Tokyo's Kikagaku Moyo, Virginia Beach's Pusha T, a Penelope Isles track remixed by Hot Chip's Joe Goddard, and some new post-punk from Portland, Oregon's Soft Kill. For the archive pick this week, Mark dusts off an excellent mashup of the late Ranking Roger doing his thing over and with The Clash's “Rock the Casbah.” Two great artists blended in a dubby, reggae-esque vibe.

Penelope Isles - "Sailing Still," a 2021 single on Bella Union. UK duo Penelope Isles — a project of siblings Lily and Jack Wolter — were able to use the pandemic lockdown to recover from the heavy touring they did for their 2018 debut album When The Tide Creeps In. “Before the enforced break due to COVID we spent pretty much all of 2019 driving ourselves around Europe and America having some incredible adventures as a band and it seems that everything since then has been falling apart," Jack explained in a press release. Today's Song of the Day finds the Wolters reconnecting during the break. “I wrote the music for this song at my brother's flat, on a really crappy electric piano, but always envisioned the whole thing as something widescreen, with a big sound to match," Lily remembers. "The lyrics took me a few months to finish, by which point the song had taken on many different meanings. Then I took it to band practice, where Jack and I wrote the end section together. It's one of our favourite sounding songs on the record. We played around with pitch-shifting instruments to get it sonically sweet. Plus, it was the first time we ever heard strings with our music. That's one tick off the bucket list.” For the video, Jack wanted to travel again, at least visually. "Writing and recording the new album was a huge part of the recovery process and making this film for 'Sailing Still' I wanted Lily and I to get back on the road somehow, as travelling has been such a massive part of our band ever since we began. So I had this idea of filming Lily in a myriad of places and scenarios, both urban and rural, coastal and inland. Mountains and rivers, council flats and tunnels, cafes and bridges. We drove up and down the country for a week, sleeping in the van, and waking up at the crack of dawn to start filming again. Reconnecting as a ‘band' again but also spending time together as brother and sister was special for filming this real heartbreaker of a song.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week, Dan has the distinct honour of talking to siblings, Jack & Lily Wolter of UK's Penelope Isles about life during COVID, working with Brighton labelmates, Lost Horizons, and playing the SXSW festival. Penelope Isles hail from Brighton, UK, are signed to Bella Union Records and are in the middle of a sold-out UK tour. Centred around siblings Jack and Lily Wolter, originally from the Isle of Man, and for several years now based in Brighton. Their debut album Until the Tide Creeps In was produced by the band at the Bella Union studios in London and Brighton. They create dynamic blissed-out moments soaked in fuzz-noise waves - their songs fragile yet ferocious. Indie-psych currents and lustrous melodies blend with the siblings' voices. Lost Horizons - "I Woke Up With An Open Heart (feat. The Hempolics)," from the 2020 album In Quiet Moments on Bella Union. KEXP is a listener-funded nonprofit, and we need your help to keep creating podcasts like this one. Donate now for our Fall Fundraising Drive! Lost Horizons unites the talents of Richie Thomas (aka Dif Juz) and Simon Raymonde (bassist of Cocteau Twins and founder of record label Bella Union), two former 4AD recording artists in the '80s. Their 2017 debut full-length Ojalá featured a stellar cast of guest vocalists, including Marissa Nadler, former Midlake frontman Tim Smith, and Karen Peris of The Innocence Mission. And, on their forthcoming sophomore LP In Quiet Moments, they reinvite those three stunning voices, adding John Grant, Porridge Radio, Penelope Isles, and more to their cast. London-based soul group The Hempolics appear on today's featured Song of the Day. The duo gave their guests the following theme to inspire their lyrics: "Death and rebirth," Raymonde confirmed via a press release. "Of loved ones, of ideals, at an age when many artists that have inspired us are also dead, and the planet isn’t far behind. But I also said, ‘The most important part is to just do your own thing, and have fun.'” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Formed by brother/sister duo Jack and Lily Wolter on a small island called Isle of Man, Penelope Isles channels salty seas and flowing currents for their eclectic and lustrous style of fuzzy dream pop. Now Brighton-based, the band is rounded out by Brighton locals Becky Redford on bass and Jack Sowton on drums. For this Live On KEXP session, Troy Nelson gives some background on the Isle of Man, which Jack Wolter calls a “special” and “safe” place where “80,000 alcoholics are clinging to a rock in the middle of the Irish Sea,” before the band breaks into a dazzling set of songs from their 2019 debut record, 'Until the Tide Creeps In.’ Recorded 10/30/2019. Penelope Isles are a fuzzy indie pop band who write serene tunes with sensational melodies and sick riffs. The quartet is fronted by brother/sister duo Lily and Jack Wolter who self-produced the album and deliver a deeply connected performance of the perfectly arranged tracks. Penelope Isles' debut album 'Until The Tide Creeps In' is one of the indie albums of the year so far. I caught up with the band soon after their support for Flaming Lips in Edinburgh last month. Hope you enjoy the show!
