Ryan is joined by Adam Baker, ex salesforce employee who has founded, scaled and exited two SaaS companies as CEO. Adam chats to Ryan about his 20+ years of experience in software development, the problems and challenges currently being faced by founders and how he and his team are changing the landscape of enterprise sales with his newest solution Dealpad.io KEY TAKEAWAYS Dealpad.io are very intentional about whom they speak to, whom they want to sell to, ensuring they only work with their ideal buyers whom they know they can make successful. It means their marketing budget is relatively low. Linkedin is one of the main platforms that Dealpad.io use to reach its customers, directly engaging with them, learning and helping them with their specific pain points and needs. From his own experience of being a buyer, Adam recognised the challenges his ideal customer would be facing and tested solutions with this in mind when creating Dealpad.io Buyers in enterprise sales are becoming more sophisticated, nailing their own processes, making sellers vulnerable and in turn giving them less control. Dealpad.io gives the capability to see what your buyers and sales teams need and how they can be helped. Optimism isn't enough to close deals, so much time is wasted on focusing on advocates within a team that actually don't have the authority to make decisions. Regardless of the economic situation we are facing right now, software is needed more than ever to create efficiency and close as many deals as possible. Adam believes that a founder's belief in solving problems, timing and product market fit are the three key elements to building a successful company. BEST MOMENTS “We're very intentional about who we want to sell to, who we want to work with” “We do most of our marketing on LinkedIn because it's where our customers are, it's mostly intentional outreach” “I've been the buyer, so I know the pains we're solving” “All of this data helps the sales individual understand is their buyer content, do we have everybody in the process we need and where do we need to lean in and help them through their journey” “That's all founders have to believe, that we're solving a problem” Do You Want The Closing Secrets That Helped Close Over $125 Million in New Business for Free?" Soda Pup is a veteran-owned business started by Adam Baker that makes amazing, durable toys for super chewer dogs. Wait! What does that have to do with cats? We're so glad you asked! Soda Pup also make a-meow-zing lick mats and slow-feed bowls, which we recommend often. Lick mats can slow you cat down when eating to avoid scarf and barf. Not only that, these bowls and mats also provide GREAT intellectual stimulation and make your cat work for their food like they do out in nature. That's great for cats, but they also appear to we humans. They come in really cute colors and patterns, and even holiday designs! Soda Pups products are functional, durable, and proudly made in the USA! EPISODE NOTES: Soda Pup
Monarch butterflies have become an increasingly hot topic in recent decades, and especially in the last couple of years. Conversations about monarchs often revolve around topics like their migrations, the importance of milkweeds, or other flowers we can plant for monarchs. Rarely do the topics of monarch health or monarch diseases come up. Yet these can also be fascinating and important topics to learn about and discuss. In this episode of the Backyard Ecology podcast, we are joined by Dr. Sonia Altizer and Kade Donaldson. Sonia is a Professor of Ecology at the University of Georgia and Kade is the Project Manager for Monarch Health which is a community science project based out of the University of Georgia. Most of our conversation revolves around the tiny protozoan, Ophryocystis elektroscirrha, more commonly referred to by its initials: OE. OE is a parasite of monarch butterflies that has been interacting with monarchs for the past several centuries, at least, and likely for almost as long as there have been monarchs. However, over the last couple of decades, something has changed. OE has gone from being relatively rare to infecting very high percentages of some monarch populations. Exactly what has changed is still a topic of ongoing research, but the increased prevalence of OE appears to correlate to changes in human activities. The goal, therefore, is to determine what has changed and find ways to keep OE from spreading any more than it would naturally spread. One of the ways that OE infections are being studied is through Project Monarch Health. Project Monarch Health is a community science project that asks members of the public to help document OE infections throughout the country. Anyone can participate in this project which is based out of the University of Georgia, and we talk about Project Monarch Health quite a bit during our conversation. Other topics that we discussed are some of the common questions they get through Project Monarch Health. Those questions include ways people can help monarch butterflies and inquiries about raising monarchs. We also talked about how monarchs are only one part of the larger ecosystem. Protecting and conserving monarchs can also help lots of other organisms, but we need to be careful not to get so focused on monarchs that we lose sight of the big picture. Welcome to another exciting and informative episode of the Data Gurus Podcast! Sima is happy to have Adam Baker and Majeed Saheb-Zadha joining her today. Indico Labs is a data-visualization business and product. They are based in London and have clients across the globe. Majeed is the Founder and CEO, and Adam is the CSO. In this episode, Majeed and Adam talk about their startup journey and discuss the pain points Indico Labs addresses in the marketplace. The pain points addressed by Indico Labs Indico Labs was born as a result of two main forces. The first was a push from the industry to deliver results and insights faster. The second was that the industry has become saturated with data. So researchers did not have the time to interpret it quickly enough to create something deliverable for the client. Indico Labs essentially create a data presentation product that streamlines the process of generating reports. That enables the researchers to interpret the reports quickly, create the visuals, and deliver them to the end client faster. Majeed's story Before starting Indico Labs, Majeed worked in the Technical Operations Department of YouGov, an end-to-end market research company. Essentially, his job was to address ways to deliver and interpret results faster. The Technical Operations team addressed every part of the company's workflow and found an obvious bottleneck when it came to the reporting element of the business. They identified that as the main pain point in the entire workflow. A code-based solution Majeed then designed a code-based solution that allowed him to deliver reports to the researchers much faster. He and his team at YouGov managed to save about 80% of the time it took for senior researchers to do data entry. An online product Majeed wanted to give the researchers the power to build PowerPoint decks using data they had already. So he quit his job at YouGov and created an online product that automated the production of data presentations. He wanted to satisfy the needs of tech-enabled products to integrate with his solution and the needs of traditional market research agencies. He launched the product in 2019. After building his prototype, Majeed asked Adam to join him. Adam's story Adam left YouGov in 2017 and spent a few years doing consultancy work at other market research agencies. Everywhere he went, a lot of time got wasted on the reporting. Then, Majeed contacted him in 2019 to show him the tool he was creating. Adam was blown away by it and wished he had had it ten years earlier! Since then, they have developed that tool even further. Marketing Since day one, there has been a lot of interest in their product from big and small organizations globally. They have spent almost nothing on marketing. Success They have been finding a lot of success with small to medium-sized fast-growing market research agencies that need a way to compete with some of the big players in the market. The sweet spot Adam has been selling, and Majeed has focused on the product side. It took them a year to realize that their sweet spot lies with smaller agencies that don't have an in-house development team or the money to spend on building in-house solutions. Growing and learning Since starting Indico Labs, Adam and Majeet have developed a lot of resilience. They have done many demos, and they have been learning how to close clients by focusing on the right questions to ask to ascertain whether or not their product will be useful to them. They have also learned to use time-saving marketing tools. Majeed's advice Majeed advises people to focus on the customers who are happy with what they have right now and sell what they currently have. Funding features If a client asks for a feature you do not already have, ask them to fund its development. They have had clients funding many of their features in the early days. Celebrate the wins
