Robert Emery was a child prodigy. He could replay whatever music he heard on the piano without any formal training. His parents knew they had a gifted child and the rest is history. Emery also isn't promoting anything other than classical music. He wants people to listen to classical music and embrace it as evergreen "cool". My quotes, not his. He tells his story from a personal level. While I explore the legal and business aspects in a parallel fashion. We discuss items like did he have helicopter parents; when and how did he acquire an agent; how do music industry artists make money; intellectual property; why did he chose to become a conductor over a concert pianist. Tune in so you can be tuned in.

It is easy to imagine how people experiencing separation and divorce may wish to time travel and make different choices. In his book Two Homes One Childhood, Robert Emery challenges parents to consider time travel to the future. An imagined future where the conflict is behind you and your children have grown up. What will be important from this time perspective? Visualising an imagined future can help people to shift out of present-day conflict and chaos. This is just my list based on working with many people going through the Maze: Find ways to manage emotions: feeling strong emotions is a natural part of separating, it is important to understand and be aware of how you feel. At the same time, you will need a clear head and heart to be able to make all of the decisions and consider arrangements moving forward. Finding ways to manage and regulate your emotions will aid in mediating your arrangements. Get support - legal / counsellor / therapist / financial advisor / etc.: People often have legal support which is very important as family mediators cannot give legal advice and yet these are the most important and personal decisions you may ever make. In addition, it can be good to have the professional support of a counsellor or therapist. While friends and family will love and support you they may not be able to put what you are experiencing into context or help you with skills / tools. In addition, some people also work with a financial advisor to help understand assets or to structure the financial arrangements. Reflect on your priorities: People may feel as if everything is a priority, but as mediation is a negotiation, no one ever gets 100% of what they want. You will need to consider what are your priorities? what are the most important goals that you have? and can these be achieved realistically given the circumstances and family situation? Practice "you have to give to get": mediation is a negotiation and therefore it is good to see if you can find something that is important to the other person and not important to you. This can be a way to build a package for proposals. During the mediation a simple acknowledgment or expression of gratitude can help to keep the negotiation on track. It can be very difficult to do, however, if you can focus on your priorities acknowledging the other person's attempt to meet your needs can be constructive. In his book, Forgive for Good, Dr Fred Luskin explains unenforceable rules and how we can use forgiveness as a way to heal ourselves. Remember this is not forever: it can feel when you are deep in the Maze that this process, pain, turmoil is never going to end. Robert Emery in Two Homes, One Childhood, uses the rearview mirror to explain that at some stage you will be looking at these events from a distance. This thought that there will be an end can be a little window of light. Through the podcast and also the digital course I will be launching in September, I will be sharing more detail about each of these ideas.

Today we have the pleasure of speaking with Robert Emery, a concert-pianist turned conductor and Musical Director. He’s worked at venues from London's Royal Albert Hall to the Sydney Opera House and with some of the top names in the world of music such as the UK’s best-selling classical artist Russell Watson and Stewart Copeland, drummer from The Police. He’s also the host of Backstage with Robert Emery, a new podcast featuring behind-the-scenes interviews with star musicians and top-level performers.   If you’re a member of Musical U or familiar with this show then you’ll know we have a pretty firm stance on the idea of musical “talent” and its implications for the adult music learner. We’re always excited when we have the chance to interview someone who’s considered “talented” or “gifted” and see what we can learn from their backstory and their own attitude to music learning.   On paper, Robert’s a classic case of the child prodigy, a talented musician who saw great success at an incredible pace as both a pianist and then a conductor. And I wouldn’t for a second detract from that or question his amazing abiltiies. But as you’ll be hearing, there is some interesting subtlety to the story. And as Robert would be the first to tell you, all of his accomplishments and the praise he receives - it has been earned through hard work, not just an effortless “gift”.   He’s also a very experienced music teacher and so has some very helpful insights and advice for the adult music learner in particular.   We talk about:   • How to choose the right instrument - and how to know whether you have or not.   • The particular challenges of learning music as an adult and how to overcome them - the pep talk he used to give his new adult students on day one that proved to be worth its weight in gold for them.   • Robert’s views on talent, nature versus nurture, and what that means for the average adult music learner.   It comes across clearly in his own podcast that Robert is a lovely guy with wisdom aplenty to share and so I knew this conversation would be a fascinating one. Take a close look at your child’s class picture. If there’s 25 cute, smiling faces in that group, statistically about seven of those kids are being raised by single parents. Maybe more depending on where you live. Of the 30-40 million homes in the United States with children under the age of 18, about 30% of them are led by single parents. Mostly moms. But the population of single dads raising kids alone is rising. That makes for a lot of kids being raised by single parents. And according to the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia, those children born or raised outside of marriage are more likely to suffer from a range of emotional and social problems – including drug use, depression, attempted suicide and dropping out of high school – compared to children in intact, married families. “We still find that happy marriage has some benefits,” says UVa psychology professor Robert Emery in a recent article in The Daily Progress. “But the ‘happy’ part is important. Children raised in relatively happy, well-functioning single-parent families will do better than children with unhappily married parents.” As a single parent raising three kids myself, that’s good to hear. So how do us single parents make sure we’re running a “relatively happy, well-functioning” family? Dr. Wendy Rice of Rice Psychology Group in the Tampa Bay area offered these five tips:   1. Be aware that you are under a lot of stress and be careful to support yourself. Think of the analogy of putting on an oxygen mask on an airplane. You have to put on your own before you can help someone else, even your child. Taking care of yourself will help you to be a better single parent. Every method we use to combat our stress is technically a coping mechanism; however, some are adaptive or good while others are maladaptive or bad. Stress prevention strategies include having a regular daily routine for predictability, finding ways in your day to get up and move and be active, and simplifying necessary activities such as making lunches the night before a busy school morning. 2. Say what you mean and mean what you say. When you’re a single parent, if you don’t follow through on your word, your child will quickly learn to push for you to give in. And you can’t afford that when you don’t have someone to partner with you on a regular basis on parenting responsibilities. Set clear rules and expectations and be careful to enforce them. 3. Teach your children independence and responsibility. Your child should understand that your family is a team by designating age-appropriate responsibilities such as cleaning up their toys, pick out their own clothes, and clean their room. 4. Seek help! Maintain a social support network so that you have a few caring adults in you and your child’s life that you can call on when you need help with childcare or unexpected situations. Offer to trade with neighbors or your child’s friend’s parents for babysitting and childcare. 5. Share information with teachers and caregivers. You need these people to be familiar with your family situation so that they can be ready to handle it in a sensitive manner. Make sure your children’s teachers and coaches know important facts, particularly if a parent has passed. This show is packed with valuable information. I hope you'll stick around!
