An exterior storage space against a yellow wall reveals shelves laden with maquettes and sculptures in various stages of completion.Robin discusses his move from working with marble to bronze and his focus on creating larger sculptures. He shares stories about some of his notable commissions, including sculptures of Winston Churchill, Ulysses and the hockey star and Canadian politician, Ken Dryden.Robin talks about his Irish heritage and how he loves telling stories through his sculptures. He also describes his working process and how he immerses himself in the characters he sculpts. He recounts the preparations he took to sculpt a Canadian cutting horse called Peppy San, which took three years to make. Coming from a military family involved Robin in much travelling and he acknowledges the influence his grandfather's pioneering spirit had on him. He reflects on how attached he is to the view of the horizon over the sea from his house near Pietrasanta. We recorded our conversation today with Felicia Hart, Clarke County's Director of Tourism & Economic Development at Blue Ridge Wildlife Center to learn the details of Clarke County's Groundhog Day happening on Thursday, February 2, 2023 from 9:30am - 11am at Clarke County Fairgrounds. The event is free and open to the pet-free public. Blue Ridge Wildlife Center and Valley Wildlife Care will be co-hosting, with wild animal Ambassadors, information about groundhogs and other wildlife's winter habits, and, of course, the winter weather prediction at 10am. Wildlife rehabilitators, Lynn Oliver & Robin Bell with Valley Wildlife Care talked about their experiences as rehabbers and explained their specialties. Valley Wildlife Care is a small network of independent, Virginia and USDA-permitted, in-home wildlife rehabilitators trained in the care of Virginia's orphaned and injured wildlife. Valley Wildlife Care, Inc.'s mission is to care for injured and orphaned wildlife so that healthy, viable animals can be returned back to the wild; and also to educate the public about VA's native wildlife so that they will know how to share their space in a safe and healthy way. You can learn more about their work and how to support them on their website: https://www.valleywildlife.org/  Jennifer Burghoffer, Education Manager and Annie Bradfield, Executive Director of Blue Ridge Wildlife Center gave us an overview of their organization and told us about their educational programs & upcoming events. Blue Ridge Wildlife Center is the only wildlife teaching hospital in northern Virginia, the staff and volunteers of BRWC work to care for native wildlife by integrating veterinary medicine, rehabilitation, education, and research. The Center began in 2000 with a mission to assist native wildlife through a telephone hotline that offered the public valuable advice to help wildlife that were sick, injured, or orphaned. Five years later, in response to a great need, the Center opened its wildlife rehabilitation center in an 800 sqft. cottage on the Burwell-van Lennep Foundation (BVLF) property. In the summer of 2016, the Center moved out of the cottage into a new 8,700 sqft. hospital facility, also located on the BVLF property. The Center's mission includes educating children and adults about the importance of protecting wildlife and their habitat and other related environmental topics. In addition, the Center collects and shares scientific data about local wildlife diseases, environmental toxins, and other threats to native wildlife and the environment. The Center has been growing rapidly since its inception. Requests for their education programs grow steadily each year. BRWC provides wildlife veterinary and rehabilitation services without any local, state, or federal funding. All funding comes from donors and events. You can give, purchase tickets to events, and learn more about their educational programs on their website: https://www.blueridgewildlifectr.org/ and by following them on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.

It was the mid-90’s and Sharon Lopatka was super into the brand spankin’ new world wide web. She launched a handful of online businesses. She chatted with newfound friends. She also explored her sexuality. The anonymity of the internet allowed Sharon to discuss some pretty kinky stuff. She went into chat rooms, looking for men to torture her to death. Some said yes, but backed away when the conversation shifted from fantasy to logistics. Then, Sharon found a guy who wasn’t scared. His name was Robert “Bobby” Glass.  Then Brandi tells us a horrifying tale that took place right across from her salon. Robin Bell was the manager of a Dollar General in Bonner Springs, Kansas. One night in November of 2005, she planned to work late. The district manager was coming the next day, and she wanted the store to look perfect. But when her husband, Don, woke up in the middle of the night and found that Robin wasn’t in bed with him, he knew something had to be wrong. He drove straight to the Dollar General, using the exact route Robin should have taken back home. But he didn’t find her car along the side of the road. He found it in the store’s parking lot. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: “A date with death,” by Rachael Bell for the Crime Library “Killer of Carroll woman dies in N.C. prison,” by Sheridan Lyons for the Baltimore Sun “Take my life -- please,” Raleigh News and Observer, November 3, 1996 In this episode, Brandi pulled from: “A year later, family still wondering who killed Tonganoxie woman” by Jesse Truesdale, The Tonganoxie Mirror “Bonner murder leaves lasting impression” by Nicole Kelley, The Basehor Sentinel “Family attends hearing in murder case” by Bobbi Mlynar, The Emporia Gazette “Jurors view grisly video of Dollar General crime scene” by Jesse Truesdale, The Basehor Sentinel “Dollar General killers receive life in prison” by Nicole Kelley, The Chieftain “Third defendant in 2005 Dollar General murder gets maximum juvenile sentence” by Nicole Kelley, The Lawrence Journal-World “State v. Joseph A. Gervasi interviews Mark Andersen of Positive Force DC, We Are Family, and the books Dance of Days: Two Decades of Punk In the Nation’s Capital (co-authored with Mark Jenkins) and All the Power: Revolution Without Illusion. On the thirtieth anniversary of Washington, DC’s “Revolution Summer,” I wanted to celebrate and illuminate the event that sent reverberations out into the world that continue to resonate today. While Mark has nothing to do with the Philly punk scene this project focuses on, he’s like some other interview subjects (e.g. Martin Sprouse) whom I’ve elected to interview for being so influential on all punk scenes, including the Philly scene. Mark Andersen grew up on his parents’ farm in Montana. He never fit in there and was looking for something else, something to draw him away from the sad cycles of addiction and conformity he saw all around him. Mark’s salvation came in the form of the nascent punk scene. A few years later, Mark found himself in Washington, DC where harDCore reigned supreme and the scene was eating itself alive. Then came Revolution Summer, where committed members of the scene — many of whom, like Mark, were frustrated with the state of affairs both in the scene and in the world — came together to create a new, engaged scene. In our long interview, originally conducted in two parts in the same day, we talk about Mark’s upbringing, his discovery of punk (most critically, The Clash), coming to DC, straight edge, Revolution Summer, Positive Force DC, coming to the Catholic Faith, social activism, the We Are Family organization that reaches out to elderly people, and much more. In one of the best interviews of this project, Mark talks frankly about many subjects he’s never been interviewed about and he earnestly approaches all subjects with a rare and raw sensitivity. For more information about the Washington, DC hardcore punk scene, I recommend the following books: Banned In DC: Photos and Anecdotes From the DC Punk Underground (79-95) by Cynthia Connolly (1988) Dance of Days: Two Decades of Punk In the Nation’s Capital by Mark Andersen and Mark Jenkins (2001) And these documentaries: Positive Force: More Than A Witness; 30 Years of Punk Politics In Action directed by Robin Bell (2011) Salad Days: A Decade of Punk In Washington, DC directed by Scott Crawford (2014) Positive Force DC We Are Family The post LOUD! FAST! PHILLY! Episode 65: Mark Andersen of Positive Force DC, We Are Family appeared first on Cinepunx.
