An incredible conversation with Olympian Joe Jacobi. Joe is an American former slalom canoeist who competed from the mid-1980s to the mid-2000s. Competing in two Summer Olympics, he won a gold medal in the C2 event at Barcelona in 1992. This episode is recorded from his home in La Seu d'Urgell, Catalonia, Spain. Joe shares fantastic life evolutions by virtue of being there. As well as sharing beautiful stories about his family, struggles and triumphs. Moving to Catalonia was not about reliving or associating really with the success of having won the Olympics many, many years ago. Joe shares why he loves being there for many reasons. We hear his life story from being born and raised in Washington DC, and how his love of love of nature began there, learning to paddle from a young age. Joe's insights are golden and his passion for his sport is very clear throughout our Beautiful Mess conversation.  I loved every moment of this!!!   Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jacobijoe/ Learn more from Joe Jacobi here: http://joejacobi.com/ Book: Slalom Did you find value in this episode?  Kindly give the Beautiful Mess podcast a 5-star review on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you may listen to podcasts.  Beautiful Mess Podcast. What if the real secret to success isn't just crossing the finish line—but how you show up at the start? I sat down with Olympic gold medalist, performance coach, and leadership expert Joe Jacobi to break down the mindset shifts that drive sustained success, fulfillment, and flow. In this episode, Joe shares powerful insights from his journey—from training with elite competitors in Washington, D.C., to reinventing his performance approach in North Carolina, to now living and coaching in Spain. This episode is packed with wisdom for high-achieving entrepreneurs who want to leverage free energy, optimize performance, and find deeper meaning in their work and life. One of my favorite concepts is when Joe talks about why your competitive edge is a dial, not a switch, and how understanding this can help you stay in flow without burning out. Whether you're a business owner, leader, or just someone navigating life's transitions, you'll walk away with new ways to align your purpose, sharpen your focus, and ride the waves of life with intention.

There aren't many kids who have the opportunity to be exposed to the Olympic version of the sports of canoeing and kayaking, but Joe Jacobi was one of them. After being exposed to the sport in a summer camp near the Washington, D.C., area where he grew up, Jacobi found himself on the path to elite competition. Years later that led to international rankings for him and his partner Scott Stausbaugh in the two-man version of whitewater canoe slalom. By the time the 1992 Olympic Summer Games came around in Barcelona, they were poised to take a serious run at the podium. That effort, which culminated in the first U.S. gold medal ever in canoe slalom, came after years of intense preparation and training. After competing, Jacobi went on to administration at the then-governing body of the sport, USA Canoe/Kayak, which moved its headsquarters to Oklahoma City after that destination began a major investment in paddlesports. Now, he is back living near Barcelona as a a performance coach and author, who latest book is called "Slalom: 6 River Classes About How to Confront Obstacles, Advance Amid Uncertainty and Bring Focus to What Matters Most." In this conversation, SportsTravel Executive Editor and Publisher Jason Gewirtz talks with Jacobi about his path to the Olympic Games, the triumph he had in Barcelona and the lessons he learned from a career in a sport whose very nature lends itself to thinking differently when obstacles are thrown into our path.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, I speak with Olympic gold medalist Joe Jacobi about performance in sport and business. This conversation takes a slightly different road from other episodes, as we talk about the relationship between success and identity, why energy is crucial for performance & capacity, and the importance of connecting with nature.  We also go a little tactical, discussing how to why course correction is crucial to performance, and how a coaching intervention won an Olympic gold medal. “I've been on a start line of the Olympic Games where I've seen athletes who were so confident they believed in what they were doing, and they didn't have a good race. I've also seen athletes lacking confidence that went on to win a medal.” – Joe Jacobi on The Recognized Authority podcast “If I told you a course correction would actually get you a gold medal at the Olympic Games, most people would say "You're crazy, that doesn't make sense! That's not the story of LeBron James or Kobe Bryant or Michael Jordan - just gritty and resilient and being better and stronger. That's not how sport works."  I'm here to tell you it can work like that.” -- Joe Jacobi on The Recognized Authority podcast

He gladly tells me how he respects their heritage and makes the citizens comfortable meeting him. As most of you may have heard the metaphor I often use, "life is a river", I get a chance to talk about it with Joe and ask him what made him use the river as a metaphor for life in his current book. And he has valuable insights I want you all to hear that may help you realize how to paddle to live our life. Introduction: Joe Jacobi is an Olympic Gold Medallist, winner of America's first ever Olympic Gold Medal in Whitewater Canoe Slalom in Barcelona in 1992. Joe is also a performance coach with Valor Performance Inc. helping Leaders & Teams perform at their best without compromising their lives. Joe writes and has a blog called Sunday Morning Joe where he shares his wisdom, insights and lessons learnt from the river in a post every week.  Podcast episode Summary: How to transfer ideas learnt on the river operating as a high performance athlete to Leaders, teams and organisations looking to improve performance. Joe uses the River as a metaphor either on the river in rafts or in a conference room or both to build better performance, to encourage the adoption of better mindsets, strategies and ultimately cultures of excellence. Joe often employs unconventional paths to learning, counterintuitive frameworks for rethinking approaches in a manner that is easily transferable.  Points made throughout the Episode:    Joe opens the conversation by sharing that he is currently writing on a very particular theme and will do so for the next six months. The theme is “The Pursuit of contentment on the River of Uncertainty”  Joe shared his knack for being able to check-in with himself to wonder about his performance in the pursuit of objectives from a very early age.  Joe was fortuitous enough to have grown up in Washington DC, the home of top performance culture for Whitewater River Slalom Canoeing on the Patomic River He grew up surrounded by top performers and coaches.  He was never attracted to the Olympics in fact the sport was only reinstated as an Olympic sport in 1989. That allowed him experience the river with a focus on being the best he could be along with friends who were interested in paddling against the backdrop of the amazing culture on the Patomic River.  Today the sport is very attached to the Olympics and the values of winning and results.  Joe enjoyed a long career in his chosen sport and returned to the Olympics in 2004 when he was aged 34. He also ran a Gold Medal Kayak Camp that allowed him grow as a teacher and coach, giving voice to the River in a meaningful way.  In 2008 he was the Olympic commentator for the sport for NBC, a position that kept him connected to the sport and to the many top performing athletes. He was the Global story teller for the sport.  The River,  Joe shares has been his best life coach and his C2 partner (Scott) his best relationship coach. He learnt how to communicate, mostly non-verbally, how to respect difference and leverage their combined difference with respect to other Olympic teams. The work was often hard and testing and they did rely on a sports psychologist. Today Joe talks about Rocks as the challenges we face in Corporate life and the counterintuitive task of befriending them.  This lesson is not just philosophical but grounded in an understanding of Maths, Science and Hydrology.  Another idea or lesson is the use of the “paddle” Joe explains that it is important to assess where you can draw energy without overusing the power of the paddle and shares how that approximates in corporate life in the patience, posture, understanding of physiology and mindset.  Teams often want to be synchronised and that means going slower, certainly initially to see “the paddle strokes” Not an easy lesson to practice.  By paddling slowly and together teams can respond to uncertainty appropriately.  Teams have to understand how they operate at lower cadence and at higher cadence when needed but importantly not to always operate at one speed.  Teams therefore have to get honest with each other and figure out how to navigate the “River” of their businesses effectively.  Important to appreciate how to rest, how to use down time and to manage energy.  Joe would like to see workplaces be more compassionate, to allow people to be vulnerable to share what is going on outside of the hours of work so as to manage their energy over time.  How do Leaders encourage people to have the confidence and trust to say when they are “off” to nurture reciprocal kindness.  Love, safety and belonging are basic human needs on teams. Yet many Leaders practice Fear, Control and Duality thinking.  Leaders need to be congruent between what they espouse and how they act.  River Mapping is an exercise that Joe employs to provide a powerful way to explore a team's approach to business objectives. The River allows for a different language and way to communicate that is often more open and honest.  Covid-19 saw Joe lose a parent, his Father died in May of 2020 and Joe had to manage that loss from afar. It also saw him work with a group of High Performing Surgeons  Joe reminds us of the need to see the human in front of us and to remember the lost art of connection and communication.  Covid has meant remote working and zoom life for many of us and that has often blurred the buffers we used to rely on. In parting Joe shares some simple tips to manage energy while using zoom and to find ways to create buffers for energy restoration  Resources shared  www.5withJoe.com   http://joejacobi.com/sign-up-for-sunday-morning-joe/ www.valorperform.com

I spend a lot of time on rivers here in Montana, and never thought of that time and all the lessons I've learned in my experiences as analogies for business and life until I read Sarah Johnston's interview with Joe Jacobi. Analogies are a powerful way to shift a mindset, taking all the emotion and knowledge of something familiar, and applying it to something completely different. In our conversation, Joe demonstrated the analogy of taking small steps in business, testing them, and shifting them when necessary to adjust to external forces, and compared that to  how a whitewater canoe athlete can roll with the force of the current, testing different positions of the paddle, their body weight, and the position of their legs. Each small adjustment, taken with thought and intention, can make the difference between fighting the current and embracing its power. You don't have to be someone who spends a lot of time on, in, or near rivers to understand this analogy and apply it to whatever problem you're trying to solve. The highlight of this conversation for me was when Joe described how being mindful makes the difference between getting frustrated and fearful as the river takes control of the boat, and the thoughtful, intentional, subtle movements he makes to get "unstuck" from whatever obstacle he was facing. As I make my way as a self-employed professional, building my business, trying out small ideas and shifts in my services and focus, I'll continue to consider this analogy, not fighting the current, but embracing its power to propel me forward.

“It’s all about the start line. It does you no good to be thinking of what may happen at the finish line. That is just energy that is taking away from what you could use in your moment in which you have the opportunity to be good. Start lines are these magical moments in the space of being present, aware, humble, and being grounded and overall grateful.”   Speaking with Olympians as part of my Make Your Mark podcast is always an honor, as they exemplify sportsmanship and the competitive spirit. It can be hard to imagine how four years of preparation will decide whether you end up on the podium or not, but getting there is such an achievement. My guest today, Joe Jacobi, not only won the first ever gold medal for the USA in his sport, but has taken that victory and turned it into a mindset that has helped countless people move forward in their pursuits.   “What whitewater does: so often we think of what we are doing in terms of roles. I am the chief executive officer or I’m the janitor - I’ve never met a force of nature like a river that wipes those roles out of the way.  We have to get in the boat, figure out ways to work together, work with the water, and figure out how to handle the obstacles in front of us.”   Joe has been coaching and inspiring professionals and entrepreneurs to become not only better leaders, but more importantly, better colleagues, honing their skills at collaboration in order to get to the finish line with the best results. I’m really impressed with his ability to level the playing field by bringing co-workers out on the river and letting them learn how to work best as a team.   “At the end of the day we didn’t race against each other. We competed against the river, a wild, fierce force that doesn’t know how to stop. That was the bond of the relationships.”   As you will hear, Joe is so easy-going, and our episode flowed so well, with tons of leadership and networking advice from both of us throughout, definitely an hour worth your time, you will learn so much! Thanks Joe!   “When I talk about culture, I’m not focused on what people are doing between the time they arrive at work and when they leave work. "Change is a matter of practicing small habits everyday." - Joe Jacobi About: Joe Jacobi: Olympic Gold Medalist (Canoe Slalom), 10x U.S. National Champion, Consultant, and former CEO of USA Canoe/Kayak Overview: Joe is an Olympic athlete with years of experience in canoeing/kayaking. He shares his experience of getting to the Olympics, and his entrepreneurial journey since.  Highlights: Background: Joe started canoeing as an 8 year old boy in Washington D.C., specifically in the Potomac River. When he was 13, Joe unintentionally became involved with a talented white-water canoeing group where he excelled for the next 10 years. Joe went on to win an Olympic Gold medal in 1992 with many of those teammates from that original group. In 2004 Joe competed again at the Olympics (placing 8th). He discusses how much he changed over the 12 years as an athlete and what it was like competing the second time around being in his 30's, with a wife, and a 3 year-old at home. Joe's Entrepreneurial Journey: Joe was the CEO of USA Canoe/Kayak from 2009-2014, and although it was a big leap of faith, he decided to step down to pursue other entrepreneurial dreams like writing, speaking, and consulting. Currently, every Sunday, Joe writes a newsletter where he shares his thoughts with others, offers encouraging words, tips on improving performance, and other meaningful topics through many experiences. With this newsletter, Joe shares that he is exploring his vulnerabilities writing each week, and has found that people are drawn to that and his email list continues to grow. Shifting to the Entrepreneurial World: Joe explains that his wife has always been an entrepreneur and is very successful at it. When he decided to make the shift to focus on his entrepreneurial aspirations, he was worried about what his wife and daughter would think, but shares how they were more than happy to support him with his new endeavors. He feels that with this new journey, he has had more time to focus on being a dad, working smarter each day, and really focus on what he wants to do for the future. His life now has space and room to grow and incubate new ideas. Consulting: Joe works more with the corporate and executive space in the performance and strategy world. He focuses on starting with his clients' health and giving them the capacity that they need to perform successfully in whatever form of work they do. Joe feels that good health is crucial to cultivating a better environment, which in turn will allow smoother-running systems.  Joe wants his clients to be able to continue on a positive path once he leaves. Work-Life Balance: Joe starts his day on a positive note- he wakes up early, exercises daily, and practices constant gratitude.  Take Away: Overall, Joe teaches us that we should always strive to have balance in our life and make our personal health a priority. As we do so, all other aspects of our life will flow smoother. He has also teaches us that gratitude is an important part of life and that we should be grateful more often.  Subscribe to the Outlier Newsletter: Click Here Connect With Joe: Website | Google+ | @JoeJacobi If you enjoy Outlier On Air, please Subscribe & Review on iTunes or Stitcher Sponsors: Flitch Creative Build your brand identity with Flitch Creative's eXpress Packages.
