Seattle-based musician Rocky Votolato has formed a new band called Suzzallo, who put out their debut album The Quiet Year earlier this year on Thirty Something Records. Through loud guitars and cathartic screaming, Suzzallo offers an outlet to help him grieve the loss of his child, Kienan, who died in a car accident in 2021. “Without a way to express this pain, it probably would have killed me,” Votolato says in the interview. “Being able to turn it into this rock band and all this noise, light, pain, carnage, and everything that’s coming out in the record, I’m really happy that some of the light made it into the lyrics, too. I tried not to just focus on the darkness of the tragedy.” Support the show: kexp.org/deeperSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/sound/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

She has written mega hits for the likes of Pitbull and Panic! At the Disco, but my introduction to her music was at Jack Rabbits, a small rock club in Jacksonville, FL, ten years ago. Jenny stood out on a stage that included heavyweight songwriters Chuck Ragan and Rocky Votolato. Her songs have been featured in the likes of Bojack Horseman, Grey's Anatomy, and Weeds. Her Buffy the Vampire Slayer podcast Buffering has spawned its own subculture. It has been over a decade since Jenny's last full length solo record but the wait is over this September. Her gorgeous collection of songs “Avalanche” is out on September 22, 2023. It is a stunning album that showcases all of what makes Jenny Owen Youngs a special creative human. Rocky Votolato - "Little Black Diamond" from the 2022 album Wild Roots on Spartan. Long-beloved local artist Rocky Votolato returns with his most personal album yet. Wild Roots is his first new album in seven years. Written during the pandemic, Votolato sought to craft an album about "family connection," adding to People magazine, "but on a deeper level, it's about the human struggle and overcoming and surviving anything that is handed to you." (You can hear and read more about this album in an upcoming interview here on KEXP!) Today's Song of the Day was inspired by Votolato's niece Carissa. As he writes on social media, "it's a song about loyalty and how much keeping your word and telling the truth means to the ones closest to you. I wrote it after we went for a walk one day and she helped me find a little stone that I carried around with me in my pocket for years and years on every tour I did. That little rock came to represent loyalty to me and was a constant reminder of all the people in my life who love me and why I was trying to stay alive and do the work on myself to become a better person." Damron is tired, hopeful, and excited to play for new folks in a different part of the world. Oh, and he HATES to fly. Just another fear to overcome. On his upcoming tour of Belgium and Netherlands, Damron will be backed by the best there is, bassist Allen Hunter of Eels fame and guitarist/producer Dan Eccles of Richmond Fontaine and Fernando. If you heard my recent chat with Rocky Votolato, you may remember us discussing a new 7" he appears on as part of the Live On Lacquer series, where artists cover each other's work and do so without any overdubs or tweaking -- all sounds are directly recorded onto acetate as a lathe machine cuts the record's information in real time, before it's sent off for duplication. Today, Levi Seitz from Live On Lacquer as well as Black Belt Mastering joins me to discuss the 7" series, his iconic Scully Lathe, the art of mastering for both digital and vinyl releases, whether there's truth to some of vinyl's biggest buzz words and much more! Technically speaking, recording is banned from our living room, but erm, Mrs. Toad was away and Rocky was by himself so why the fuck not, eh? This was an odd mismatch. Originally the session was prepared for Chantal Acda, who was headlining the tour. Then it turned out she couldn’t make it due to illness, and then there I was having a chat with Rocky, who I’d never exchanged a word with before. Considering I was monumentally unprepared, this was a wonderful session. Rocky was relaxed and chatty, and it was one of the nicest and easiest conversations we’ve had on the session since they began in 2008.   When Seattle-based singer/songwriter Rocky Votolato began releasing solo albums in the late 90's -- at a time when vinyl was all but out of the mainstream consciousness -- it was important to him that every single release of his was pressed to wax. Fast forward to 2016, and he's now celebrating the 10th anniversary reissue of "Makers" on Barsuk Records -- his favorite in his discography, and viewed as his crowning achievement among his fans -- with a tour fronting a talented band that gives new thrilling dynamics to that album's intimacy. Downstairs at Chicago's famed Schubas Tavern, Rocky and I chat about his DIY aesthetic, the idea that music isn't truly real until it's on vinyl, sharing records with his brother and Waxing bandmate Cody (who later went on to form The Blood Brothers), motorcycle movie soundtracks, raising his kids on Neutral Milk Hotel, recording a recent seven-inch live directly to lacquer, recording stories with Chris Walla and Casey Foubert, bouncing around between some of indie-rock's most prolific labels, the differences between himself now and the Rocky who wrote and recorded "Makers," and much more! For our second episode, Rocky Votolato sits down with Dave to discuss how and when they might have met for the first time. From there, Dave goads Rocky into unearthing all sorts of potentially incriminating dirt from his childhood. All goes well until an unexpected interruption threatens to derail the whole thing. 100 Words Or Less: The Podcast

THIS EPISODE BROUGHT TO YOU EXCLUSIVELY BY ENJOY THE RIDE RECORDS (www.enjoytheriderecords.com). On the show this week is the hardworking singer/songwriter Rocky Votolato. Many may remember his incredible band Waxwing or his solo career that he's been crafting for the past 10+ years. Rocky has some incredible stories about being raised in/around a biker gang, how to remain positive and the fight with your ego. It's an incredibly introspective conversation and one I was really glad to have with him.  Learn more about your ad-choices at https://news.iheart.com/podcast-advertisers

We are back with a very full show for you tonight. We have the wonderful William Woollard reading from his new book, Buddhism and the science of happiness. Tonight he reads Chapters 12 and 13! Great news that his earlier book, The Reluctant Buddhist is now available in Spanish! Also tonight we were very lucky to have the amazing Lucille Barclay who came to our home to give her experience and took part in the show as well!  We play four tracks tonight from the Podsafe Music Network. First up is Stavia with Lucky Day, then Wonder by the Fire Apes, Rocky Votolato with White Daisy Passing and finally Can't Believe by Pippa Rogers.  As usual we have shout outs and we pop a bottle of champagne to celebrate 6 years of doing the show and 1.3 million downloads! In this episode, we are joined by South of Lincoln AKA Max Holmquist. We talk about his experience as a singer/songwriter hailing from a small town in Nebraska, and get a couple of great in studio performances. The cicadas even chime in... South of Lincoln is the stage name for Maxwell Beardsley H. and his one man folk show. The calm, boring life of a small Midwestern town drove him to pick up a guitar at the age of 15. Four years later, South of Lincoln started in 2006 as Max Holmquist’s solo project. Starting with a post-punk/emo sound in the vein as Dashboard Confessionals, etc. somewhere along the line his style shifted with his musical tastes. With the introduction of Alt/Folk from people like Damien Jurado, Neko Case, M. Ward, Andrew Bird, Rocky Votolato, etc., South of Lincoln made the shift towards Folksy storytelling.
