Country Music Hall of Famer Lacy J. Dalton  The Queen of Country Music LACY'S BIO Lacy J. Dalton (born Jill Lynne Byrem on October 13, 1946 in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania), is an American country singer and songwriter with a career that has spanned many decades and touched the hearts of millions of music fans. In March 2017 Lacy J Dalton was inducted into the North American Country Music Association International Hall of Fame, and in 2022 she was awarded a Lifetime Career Achievement Award from the Josie Music Awards, the largest independent music awards show in the country. She's one of the most instantly recognizable voices in music – the woman People Magazine called “Country's Bonnie Raitt.” From the first time Lacy J Dalton caught the public's ear, that soulful delivery, full of texture and grit, has been a mainstay of Country Music. When you sit to listen to a Lacy J Dalton album, you find yourself pulled in by the very power and heart of this vocalist, because she's not merely performing a ten-song set, she's bringing each and every tune to life. It's as if they were all written especially for her. Prior to recording with Harbor Records in 1978 as Jill Croston, she like many before her, held many jobs to survive and support her family. As a truck stop waitress and singer, she would wait tables and then take the stage to sing a few songs. In June 1979, Lacy J Dalton was signed by Columbia Records and quickly rose to national prominence with Crazy Blue Eyes, which she wrote with her longest friend, Mary McFadden, and which raced to #7 on the Billboard Country Charts.  Her hard work and dedication paid off in 1979 when she was awarded the Academy of Country Music's Top New Female Vocalist of the Year.   Lacy's success was powered not just by the artist's recordings, but by a stage show that truly electrified audiences. She quickly became one of the few women who could successfully open a show for the likes of Hank Williams, Jr., Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard or Charlie Daniels. Not only could she do it, but she left audiences across the country hollering for more. Her signature song 16th Avenue, became the Anthem for Nashville songwriters.  Her other hit records are legendary million-airplay cuts and include Crazy Blue Eyes, Takin' It Easy, Everybody Makes Mistakes, Hillbilly Girl with the Blues, Hard Times, and the worldwide hit Black Coffee. In addition to her Top New Female Vocalist award, she also brought home numerous Grammy nominations and 3 prestigious, back to back (1979, 1980, 1981) Bay Area Music Awards for Best Country-Folk Recordings. Lacy appeared on those shows with the likes of Neil Young, The Grateful Dead, Grace Slick and the Jefferson Airplane. Lacy's collaboration with Willie Nelson on his platinum Half Nelson CD was a high spot for her. Lacy is the only woman featured on that recording (which included singing legends Ray Charles, Neil Diamond, Merle Haggard, Julio Iglesias, George Jones, Leon Russell, Carlos Santana, Mel Tillis, Hank Williams Sr., and Neil Young), and was awarded a Platinum Record for it. She also received a Gold Record from Hank Williams Jr. in 1985 for her support performances throughout his Five-0 Tour, where she opened for him at a time when it was unusual for a woman to do so. Her career includes accomplishments in music, film and radio.  In music, they range from her instantly recognizable charted hit songs to her notable duets recorded with George Jones, Willie Nelson, Bobby Bare, Glen Campbell, Eddie Rabbit, David Allen Coe and many others. Her film debut was in the motion picture Take This Job And Shove It, and her acting has also included live stage and theater performances. Until recently, Lacy J Dalton also hosted a weekly radio show called Mustang Matters.  Podcasts of past shows are available to listeners on the internet at www.americamatters.us Following a successful career in country music, Lacy decided to draw on all her musical experiences including country, rock and folk, and cross over into the Americana genre.  This blend of musical styles allows her to express herself in a way that demonstrates all the facets of who she is as a singer/songwriter.  She became an independent artist and formed her own label called Song Dog Records.  Under this label, she has released three albums to date.  The first was Wild Horse Crossing in 1999, followed by the Last Wild Place Anthology which went #1 on the World Independent Chart, and a year later went #1 on the American Western Music Chart. Then Allison Eastwood, Clint Eastwood's daughter, used the hit song Slip Away from the Anthology CD on the sound track of her independent film, Don't Tell. In 2010 Lacy also released a tribute to Hank Williams Sr. entitled Here's To Hank. Today, Lacy continues to record new music and perform live shows whenever possible.  She tours mainly west of the Mississippi and loves small boutique venues and old theaters with great sound quality and warm, receptive audiences she can really connect with.  She recently recorded some electrifying new music for an EP that was released in January 2019.  When hearing the signature song Scarecrow, her good friend Reverend Barbara Ann Fletcher remarked “that song makes you a whole new you, and it makes me a whole new me.”  And that's exactly the response Lacy was hoping for. In addition to her musical career, Lacy has been involved in various service projects through several charitable organizations – namely, the Let ‘em Run Foundation, William James Associates Arts in Corrections, and Rotary International.  In 1999, Lacy co-founded the Let ‘em Run Foundation which received its 501(c)3 designation from the IRS in 2004.  The Let 'em Run Foundation is dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and re-homing America's wild horses and burros who have no voice.  Let ‘em Run's mission is to serve as an educational, fund-raising and public relations entity, through its own efforts and in assisting similar non-profit organizations, to promote the appropriate and compassionate management of the wild horse, estray horse, and mustang population of the U.S. and other species of endangered or mistreated animals.  From 2015 through November 2018, Lacy and her partner, Dale Poune, worked with the William James Arts in Corrections program at High Desert State Prison in Susanville, California.  Their work there has been focused on teaching basic song writing skills and techniques, music theory and guitar playing to level 4 inmates.  Through their classes, a select group of inmates got the opportunity to learn the basic principles of guitar playing and song writing which they then used to develop songs and lyrics, both individually and as a group.  The class culminated with the inmates recording those musical compositions and giving a live performance to an audience of prison and non-prison personnel.  In addition, several inmates were able to go on to teach basic guitar to other inmates in the classic “each one teach one” teaching tradition. Finally, Lacy is an honorary member of the Rotary Club of Reno, and a Paul Harris Fellow.  Lacy has written two songs for Rotary, which she then recorded on a CD to be used as a fundraising opportunity for the Reno club.  Lacy also performed at the Rotary International Convention in New Orleans in 2011, and has been a key note speaker and headline performer at several club meetings and district conferences.

If there's been one constant chronicled on this podcast, it's that no one knows the future of the music industry. Hell, no one even knows what the next few days are going to be like in the industry. Certainly my next guest, Seattle-based singer/songwriter Ian Jones, is doing all he can to crack the code. Ian is making his third appearance on this show, this time to discuss his latest single, I Can't Seem to Drink Her Off My Mind (https://open.spotify.com/album/3zkzAlf7arCVfra5MqU5h3?si=_-rhySY6ROm3fdLB9KeIsg). The song is a throwback to Merle Haggard, David Allen Coe, Buck Owens—a true drown-in-your-beer country tune that sounds like it was recorded in Bakersfield 50 or 60 years ago. Interesting, Ian is taking a kitchen-sink approach to marketing the song, as the album it will eventually be on is still being record. Not only that, he released a live version of the song before anyone's heard the studio version. Will it work? Who knows! And that's the point—there's no blueprint, so why the hell not? It's a fantastic, booze soaked lament that will keep your toes tapping and eyes watering. So sit back and listen in as Ian gives a frank assessment of the industry and how the song came together.

We are all our parent's children, for better or for worse. We all must come to terms with this at some point. I never did until listening to Stephen Wilson Jr. Sometimes in topics this deep and difficult, having a wise guide will help you understand the relations of parent and child. Stephen Wilson Jr. is deceptively simple, but he can turn a phrase that can grasp your soul and squeeze; the tree never grows too far from the apple.       I grew up a poor child of a single mother. All I had was a radio and of course all the books the library would let me take. So the background of my youth was top 40 pop music. Then as I got older I wanted deeper, smarter music. So, punk? It was perfect for a 13 year old. But eventually my music tastes settled on Metal and Country, because they had so much power and truth...and beauty. I purposely seek out the most powerful and emotional metal I can. Hank Jr and David Allen Coe are my favorite country songwriters. I live my life seeking depth and purpose in music...then I was introduced to Stephen Wilson Jr. A man whose understanding of human relations is unmatched. It took me a full 24 hours to get through his discography because every song made me cry. It hit me harder than the hardest metal song. You can feel his sincerity in your bones, even with songs like CooCoo that sound like a simple hootenanny, when it is truly about death and the life that leads up to it.       Give this interview a listen, friends, and hear a man who won't start a fight, but will never back down. A man who will swear, then politely apologize afterwards. I never spoke much as a child either.

Defining a genre for the group War is a difficult process.  There are elements of Latin, R&B, funk, soul, and rock mixed in.  Some call it progressive soul.  War came from Long Beach, California in 1969, and began as a backing band for Deacon Jones.  The band was originally led by Eric Burden of the Animals and were known as Eric Burden and War for their first tow albums, then as War after Burden left the group.  Their seventh studio album, Why Can't We Be Friends? would continue a tradition of successful albums for the band, going to number 8 on the US charts, number 1 on the R&B sharts, and two singles would be nominated for the Grammy awards in 1976.War had a large number of musicians, and much of their personnel rotated in and out of the group.  For this album the group was Howard Scott on guitar, B.B. Dickerson on bass, Lonnie Jordan on organ, Papa Dee Allen on conga and bongos, Charles Miller on clarinet and sax, and Lee Oskar on harmonica.  All members are also listed on percussion and vocals.War was a band with a purpose.  The goal of the band from the beginning was to spread a message of brotherhood and harmony, and to speak out against racism, hunger, gangs, and crimes.Bruce brings us this funky fusion band for discussion.. Why Can't We Be Friends? The title track reached number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Each band member gets their own verse to sing.  The title is sung 44 times.  It was played in outer space during the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project.  Smash Mouth did a cover in 1998 as the second single from their debut album.  HeartbeatThis is a deeper cut with a lot of funk.  You could easily hear George Clinton and Parliament doing this piece.  The lyrics are about not worrying about things, but being in the present.  "Ain't no need a-worryin' about the future.  Ain't no need a-worryin'."Don't Let No One Get You DownLeading off the album, this song is a piece of encouragement, letting the listener know they will always be lifted up by the singer.  "Don't let no one get you down, cause if they do, if they do, I'll be around."Low RiderThe big hit off the album would become iconic over time.  The song is about a car and a culture in Southern California.  A low rider is a car modified with hydraulic lifts so the wheels can be lowered and make the car bounce.  The band maintains that the references are not to drug culture, although the song did make it into a couple of Cheech and Chong movies.. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main Theme to the motion picture "Jaws"This movie was keeping everyone out of the water in the summer of 1975.   STAFF PICKS:Welcome to My Nightmare by Alice CooperWayne starts off the staff picks with the title song from a concept album that chronicles a journey through the nightmares of a child named Steven.  Cooper would later perform this song on "The Muppet Show."  It peaked at number 45 on the Billboard Hot 100.Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me a Little While)  by The Doobie BrothersRob brings us a cover from Motown.  Holland-Dozier-Holland wrote this one, originally performed by Kim Weston in 1964.  While the original version peaked at number 50 on the Billboard Hot 100, the Doobie Brothers version was more successful, peaking at number 11.Sister Golden Hair by America Brian features a track that went to number 1 on the charts.  This is a relationship song according to Gerry Beckley, and it was made as a demo before America recorded their fourth album.  It didn't make the cut for that album, and so was included in their next album. Magic by PilotBruce's staff pick is the first hit single from short-lived Scottish pop rock band pilot.  The inspiration for this song is a sunrise on Blackford Hill in Edinburgh.  Lead singer David Paton also worked with the original lineup of The Alan Parson's Project, and worked with Kate Bush, Camel, and Rick Wakeman.  The band had a couple of other hits before splitting in 1977.   NOVELTY TRACK:You Never Even Called Me By My Name by David Allen CoeThe perfect country and western song was released in 1975, and reached number 8 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.

#188 - Are You Ready For A Manager

You've spent time writing songs. You've gone into the studio to record some demos. Now it's time to get out there and pitch your artistry to the masses. But how do you go about doing it? Do you need a manager to help you thru the gauntlet known as the music industry? Is your career at a point where you would be ready for a manager? We talk with Chuck Thompson, who is a 40+ year veteran in the music industry, having worked in the Country music field as a manager for such acts as The Judds, Billy Dean, McBride, and The Ride, The Pirates of the Mississippi, Carl Perkins, Skip Ewing, Wynonna, Michell Wright, and others.  Chuck explains what you need to look for, and what management will expect in return. He discusses how management is a specific need at a specific time for a specific function. We also go into what the difference is between an artist manager and a business manager. We touch base on what does a prospective manager look for when signing a new act? Is it based on their social media, their touring, or their record sales if applicable? Chuck Thompson began his 40 plus years in the entertainment industry while attending Nashville's prestigious Belmont College. It was there that a posting for an internship in publicity caught his eye. That internship turned into his first job when he was hired during his final year of study at the college to drive the media campaigns for David Allen Coe, Frizzell & West, Ricky Skaggs, The Flying Burrito Brothers, and George Strait. He cut his artist management teeth with acts Baillie and the Boys and comedy duo Pinkard and Bowden at the firm. Transitioning to the management firm The Ken Stilts Company where he would rise to the position of Vice President, Thompson and his team guided the careers of The Judds, Billy Dean, McBride, and The Ride, The Pirates of the Mississippi, Carl Perkins, Skip Ewing, Wynonna, and others. He worked alongside company principles to build an integrated corporate sponsorship/artist booking agency to work within the corporate and country music communities. While serving as Vice President/Director Of Public Relations for Pro Tours, the company launched co-branded country music tours for corporate clients GMC Trucks, Liberty Optical, The Sara Lee Corporation, and Sun Country Wine Coolers. In 1995, Thompson accepted the position of Director, Media Relations & Artist Development with the newly reorganized RCA Label Group Nashville. Working with the established RCA roster and with the BNA staff to launch the careers of recently signed artists Kenny Chesney, Lonestar, and Mindy McCready, he also created the label's media and sales opportunities' extensive catalog of masters. While leading the label's NASCAR efforts, working with the Kranefuss-Haus Racing Team, he developed marketing events for RCA and BNA artists and the race team's co-sponsors Little Caesar's Pizza and Kmart at racing events around the country. In October of 1996, Chuck left the RCA Label Group to return to the ranks of artist management as a co-manager of Decca recording artist Danni Leigh, opening the Thompson Entertainment Group's offices under the banner “Where music still has A Heart and A Soul.” He explains that tagline by saying, “In a world of broadening entertainment options, music is the thread that runs through it all, impacting every part of our lives. The truth in a great song and the heart of a great singer drives my passion, and my goal has always been to develop long-term brand strategies for each of our artists. In these unusual times, artists need new and innovative thinking from their management to adapt to the world we currently live in.”   Corporate brands are also searching for innovative thinkers who understand a brand's needs and can create and execute unique, brand-driven partnerships. Harley Davidson, Coca-Cola, Panoptix, Conagra Foods, and others have turned to Chuck to help them develop and implement a brand strategy that will reach their customers through music-driven events.  In 2016, the Navigator Records imprint was added to the TEG umbrella. The latest evolution in the company's growth allowed Thompson to utilize the many modern technologies and creative outlets now available to create a higher profile for the Thompson Entertainment Group family of artists. In the fall of 2018, Navigator Records released new studio recordings from Canadian Country Music Hall Of Fame artist Michelle Wright, her first new music since the 2013 release of Strong. Other Navigator releases have included Wright's recording of the Christmas classic “Silver Bells,” released to coincide with A Wright Christmas: 2019 tour across the Alberta and Ontario provinces of Canada. 2020 into 2021 has also given rise to a new breed of creators. Navigator Records has provided major label services and distribution to those independent artists and labels who want to maintain their creative vision without sacrificing ownership or control while assisting established and developing artists eager to build and sustain meaningful careers. www.thompsonentertainmentgroup.com www.navigatorrecords.com The Business Side of Music ™ Lotta Dogs Productions LLC   Co-Produced and Hosted (by the guy who has a face for podcasting):  Bob Bender Co-Producer, Creator, and Technical Advisor (the man behind the curtain):  Tom Sabella Director of Video and Continuity (the brains of the entire operation): Deborah Halle Audio/Video Editor Mark Sabella Midnight Express Studio  Olian, NY Marketing and Social Media: Kaitlin Fritts Executive Assistant to Bob and Tom (the one who keeps us on track and our schedules straight) Tammy Kowalski All Around Problem Solver: Connie Ribas Recorded at: The Bunker in Franklin, TN (except during the Covid 19 pandemic, then it's pretty much done VIA Skype or over the phone, with the exception for those fearless enough to come to Bob Bender's living room… and there are a few). It’s time for some Thanksgiving mishaps. Caddy and Donna celebrate the day by reflecting on a few historical uh-ohs that have occurred over the years. Just for the record: It’s important to remove the bags and packaging from turkeys before cooking.  Speaking of burnt birds, the next segment moves to cover Justin Bieber. Donna is a fan but worries about whether or not people take the artist seriously.  Bars, vacations and quesadillas during a pandemic. Cadillac Jack is familiar with all of them. At the same time he also values the ability to use the pandemic as an excuse for what he doesn’t want to do. Don’t want to see someone? Pandemic. Family wants to come over? Pandemic. Holiday decorations need to go up? Pandemic. The flag is useful and the flag is versatile.  Caddy takes a quick break in the run of show to apologize. He’s got to get something (else) off his chest.  Zoom holiday office parties. Does anything get any worse? Caddy doesn’t even understand why they exist at all. (He’ll also be using another COVID excuse.) Donna has mixed feelings but for more understandable reasons.  Donna and Cadillac Jack met at work, which is important to remember for the next segment. They cover why their first debut as an official couple got a little out of control. Let’s just say the event facility ran out of glassware within a half hour. And the facility had to shut down for a few months. Actually, it never opened back up. Anyways… Then at a David Allen Coe concert an on air personality was rendered incapacitated in front of the women’s bathroom. The company was not invited back.  Then at a party in front of Papacito’s in Atlanta, an on air personality forgot to wear certain bits of clothing. Some assistant producers had to go around with an umbrella to jump in front of all photographers. The company, and certain personalities, were not invited back.  Then at a holiday party hosted by Norm at the Ritz-Carlton, Caddy got his first taste of “richy salespeople,” who had camped out for the whole week. They were invited back. For a couple years, at least. But the gospel group that had split the ballroom with the company dropped out pretty early.  The show finishes up by covering one woman who lost it when she finds out her husband will be working from home for 7 more months. Others have suggested that the work-from-home movement has disrupted marital affairs. Some suggest rolling their husband up in a carpet and dropping them in a lake. Donna and Caddy evaluate the whole thing and prescribe their own suggestions. Step one: tear out the thermostat.  Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go pick [My Second Act]’s socks off the floor.

Tommy has been a Nashville ‘A' list studio musician for many years.  During his stint in Nashville, he has played on an estimated 7-10,000 recording sessions.  Tommy has played on sessions for Taylor Swift, Alan Jackson, Craig Campbell, Kip Moore, Reba McEntire, David Allen Coe, Waylon Jennings, Lo Cash Cowboys, Tamia, Candi Staton, Big and Rich, John Anderson, George Jones, Jessica Simpson, and countless others.  He has played on number 1 songs including “I Drive Your Truck” (ACM and CMA song of the year), “Girl I Just Got Started Loving You' (most played song of the year), ‘Lost In This Moment' (Big and Rich's only #1 hit), and many, many others. Tommy has played at the White House, on Good Morning America,  the Today Show, the View, The Ellen Show, Oprah, Regis and Kelly, the Tonight Show, the David Letterman show, and has also has a screen credited appearance in the movie Muscle Shoals. As Nashville based songwriters, Tommy and Lorrie got not 1, but 2 cuts on Reba McEntire's double platinum selling album ‘Duets'.  They included a song with Reba and Faith Hill called ‘Sleeping with a Telephone' and another with Reba and Carole King called ‘Everyday People', which was also performed live at the Kennedy center with Reba and Carole in front of the President and the entire nation via NBC.  (As far as they know, they are the only outside writers to ever get a Carole King cut that she didn't write). Lost Hollow has appeared on the Bob Harris ‘Under the Apple Tree' sessions and toured England, Wales, and Ireland on many trips to the UK as well as appearing on the BBC via many different radio shows. Surviving the Music Industry

Mac McAnally is a singer-songwriter, session musician, and record producer that spans a career of over six decades. His career includes chart-topping singles as an artist from an impressive catalog. Including his most recent release Once and A Lifetime. He's had songs recorded by Kenny Chesney, Alabama, Sawyer Brown, David Allen Coe, Steve Wariner, Shenandoah, and more. Session credits that include Roy Orbison, Thelma Houston, Hank Williams Jr., Jerry Reed, Toby Keith, and Keith Whitley are worth mentioning. Then also a long time member of Jimmy Buffett and The Coral Reefers. You might think with a career like Mac's he would be someone that walks with confidence in any situation. But self admits he's still as shy as he was at his first bar gig where chicken wire protected the band and chain saws used as applause. We highlight some pretty big moments in Mac's vast career, but reflection and wisdom should be some pretty key takeaways. One might even be surprised by the pearls and surprises in conversation that can be used in everyday life. A great reflection of a songwriter that isn't afraid to face his fears.  American Songwriter Podcast Network

The beautiful has been lost in our culture. Beauty has been reduced to lustful images and true beauty has been neglected and attacked. If we want to correct the course for our culture, we must restore standards of beauty and find new ways to create and distribute true art. -Edmund Burke"Beauty in distress is much the most affecting beauty." Beauty and truth go hand in hand, and the attack on both is not accidental. That is why those who put forward truth and offer beauty are denigrated. But, we must support those speaking truth and offering real beauty. Places where we can reclaim beauty where it has been stolen from us: Art- The quality of art as dramatically deteriorated. I believe there is a chance for this to be revamped by truly skilled people as long as we are able to refine our taste and patronize true art. Music- The deterioration of music's quality is similarly real. There has always been folk music, and I enjoy music that is simple and not Mozart by any means. That said, I don't put David Allen Coe on the same pedestal, but recognize the difference. Rhetoric- In reading a book on great American speeches, the ability of our leading minds to communicate their thoughts in soaring ways has greatly diminished. Architecture - Functional architecture is reflective of a culture that has traded truth and beauty for only economic interests. It is a culture that prefers useful and expedient to good and true. Several accounts I've recently begun following are great at helping preserve art, architecture, style, and beauty of the past. I've truly enjoyed these accounts and and others like them, and recommend you check these out. Enjoy solving today's problems with the wisdom of the past? Isolation causes people to do funny things. Sometimes brilliant, sometimes mad, often both. We're both under the recommended self-quarantine and as we're waiting for this pandemic to hopefully quickly subside. We started thinking about albums that were made while in confinement. Many came to mind quickly. The Rolling Stones recorded Exile on Main Street while holed in France avoiding tax penalties. Of course, that is less like quarantine and more like a weekend at Caligula's. Bon Iver's post-break-up self induced retreat in a hunting cabin turned into For Emma, Forever Ago. Songs of Pain by Daniel Johnston was recorded in his parents basement as his bipolar swings made social engagements tremendously difficult. The majority of Cat Power's Moon Pix was written during a terrifying hallucinatory nightmare while left alone in a farmhouse in the middle of nowhere. And of course, David Allen Coe, Charles Manson, that psycho guy from Burzum, and countless hip hop artists made records while incarcerated. That's when we remembered Camper Van Beethoven's Tusk. As we recalled, the band got snowed in at a cabin somewhere in the depths of the California mountains in the late 80s. To stave off boredom, the band did a track by track remake of the Fleetwood Mac maligned bizarro AOR classic, Tusk. CVB got through most of the tracks before the thaw, stashed the tapes, and went about their merry way. Many years later, about to embark on a reunion tour, the band found the tapes, cleaned them up, added and rerecorded bits, and released the record. We both love Camper Van Beethoven and Tusk, so we decided it would be a good exercise in exploring what happens to bands when cabin fever sets in. So, today, break into your emergency vodka, settle into your confinement, and check your supply of toilet paper as we cover the bizarre tale of Camper Van Beethoven's Tusk.Highway Hi-Fi is a proud member of the Pantheon Music Podcast Network - Home of the Finest Music Podcasts

Many came to mind quickly. The Rolling Stones recorded Exile on Main Street while holed in France avoiding tax penalties. Of course, that is less like quarantine and more like a weekend at Caligula’s. Bon Iver’s post-break-up self induced retreat in a hunting cabin turned into For Emma, Forever Ago. Songs of Pain by Daniel Johnston was recorded in his parents basement as his bipolar swings made social engagements tremendously difficult. The majority of Cat Power’s Moon Pix was written during a terrifying hallucinatory nightmare while left alone in a farmhouse in the middle of nowhere. And of course, David Allen Coe, Charles Manson, that psycho guy from Burzum, and countless hip hop artists made records while incarcerated.  That's when we remembered Camper Van Beethoven’s Tusk. So, today, break into your emergency vodka, settle into your confinement, and check your supply of toilet paper as we cover the bizarre tale of Camper Van Beethoven’s Tusk. Andrew Johnson was born on December 29, 1808 in Raleigh, NC. He was poor, uneducated, and indentured to a tailor who he ran away from when he was 15 years old. He was a southern Democrat who was loyal to the Union, a contrast to President Abraham Lincoln. Forty-two days after his inauguration, “Andy” Johnson became the 17th POTUS when President Lincoln was assassinated. Andrew Johnson was the 1st president to be impeached, and the last president to own slaves. But was he really an inspiration to country singer David Allen Coe?! Listen in as we celebrate the 211th birthday of Andrew Johnson!

If the name Whey Jennings sounds familiar, it should. Whey is the grandson of Waylon Jennings. He stopped into Radio Memphis in The Morning with Ric Chetter to talk about an appearance in Memphis. But they also talked about songwriting, touring, influences and his famous grandfather. Currently, Whey is on the road with former members of David Allen Coe's band now known as Cold Moses. Before you think of Whey as nothing more than a country artist, you would be mistaken. Although they do play country, they also play some of Waylon Jennings music as well as blues and rock & roll. Let’s start with a name-drop: over the past 20 years, Michael Dean Damron has played and toured with some of the greatest American songwriters in history: Alejandro Escovedo, Lucero, Rocky Votolato, Chad Price, Mike Watt, Eddie Spaghetti, Reverend Horton Heat, Drive by Truckers, David Allen Coe, Jerry Joseph, Slim Cessna's Auto Club, Neko Case... Damron is tired, hopeful, and excited to play for new folks in a different part of the world. Oh, and he HATES to fly. Just another fear to overcome. On his upcoming tour of Belgium and Netherlands, Damron will be backed by the best there is, bassist Allen Hunter of Eels fame and guitarist/producer Dan Eccles of Richmond Fontaine and Fernando. A subtly powerful trio to make you shout, cry, and remember what it means to be alive.

THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST - The Premier Red Dirt, Texas Country and Independent Music Podcast

In this episode of the podcast I visit with Nebraska's own Shawn Cole.  Shawn has made his living as a touring musician for over the past 10 years primarily as a one-man-band who not only plays guitar and harmonica while singing, but also plays a kick and snare drum with his feet.  He's shared the stage with country music icons like Willie Nelson, Johnny Paycheck and David Allen Coe.  His harmonica work has been featured on many other artist's projects including those of the band Bright Eyes whose records have sold in the hundreds of thousands of copies.  Shawn performs upwards of 200 shows per year as well as managing and operating his own entertainment booking agency.  More information on this hard-working musician by going to www.shawncole.net   www.thetroubadourpodcast.com www.facebook.com/thetroubadourpodcast www.instagram.com/thetroubadourpodcast/ twitter: @thetroubadourP1

Seth and Rob start the show by hinting at exciting podcast developments which they discuss in more depth during the post-interview portion of the episode. The duo sat down with with founding member and frontman of Leftover Salmon Vince Herman in honor of the much anticipated Leftover Salmon’s acoustic fall tour and their chat provides the bulk of this episode. The cozy confines of the Hunt House in Marietta, Georgia provide an ideal setting as Herman talks about how his eclectic musical taste grew out of his teenage experiences at the weeks-long multiple genre annual musician-interactive-heavy Augusta Heritage Festival in Elkins, West Virginia. Herman ultimately moved from a chilly West Virginia attic to the acoustic music promised land of Colorado and he came across a notice for a Left-Hand String Band show literally upon arrival. Left-Hand String Band and Herman’s eventual own band Salmon Heads would eventually give birth to Leftover Salmon. Vince talks about mandolin-toting football moves with David Grisman, the mythology of Peter Rowan, how having Jeff Sipe and Billy Payne in tow impacted LoS, how Waylon Jennings always hated country music and he even tells a harrowing David Allen Coe story. We learn how Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and David Bromberg were the main inspirations for the initial Leftover Salmon ethos, and how they, with John Bell recorded (in one take) a song Bromberg had taught Vince. We learn about the similarities between founding member Mark Vann and the banjo player who replaced him Andy Thorn and what LoS did the time Neil Young wandered onto their stage. A discussion about the tour with his son Silas which brought him to Hunt House ensues and we find out that this “Herman Original” was initially pretty much compelled by friends to pursue music, and how Georgia music-lovers had been impressed by him. Herman also discusses how Ralph Roddenbery specifically, and the Metro Atlanta music scene in general provided many highlights of his tour with his son. This podcast also once again offers the genesis of yet another eventual JamCruise activity, “Chemical Experiments with Mr. Wizard,” and Herman gives some hints toward the true significance of Mayor McCheese. Then a discussion about parallel universes serves as an ideal prelude to an, at times heavy discussion about Col. Bruce Hampton and his final performance. wTnS is Produced by Rob Turner and Engineered by Josh Thane of Wonder Dog Sounds Studio. Jesse is no stranger to the Honky Tonks that's where he cut his teeth on pure Country Music. He was weaned on Jennings, Haggard, Cash, and Jones He has always walked on the Outlaw side of Music. Jesse grew up a coal miner's son in Logan Co. WVa.working the mines with his dad at an early age. It was this hard working, rough shed man of a few words that used music as his refuge. Jesse started writing around the age of 15 his song writing has always been a raw reflection of his life. The songs are the anthem of the working man the story telling puts you there in the moment. Listening to formative outlaws and idols Jesse developed his own mantra on music. Many describe Jesse as The Last Real Outlaw straddling the line between Waylon Jennings and David Allen Coe with some Johnny Cash all rolled into one package. With years of musical experience under his belt to back it up. Jesse has had the chance to open up shows with some of the biggest names in the music business today and the past Marty Stewart, Sammy Kershaw, Jerry Lee Lewis, and many more. Jesse has done shows with Ken Melons, Stella Parton (Dolly's Sister), Jimmy Fortune (The Statler Brothers) Waylon's Band the Waymore Blues, The Late Del Reeves and many more. With songs like “Outlaw On The Run” and “Poor man Blues” he brings the calm to the storm of life as he opens up his lyrical delivery a window to a torn and tatted soul .
