Patreon Spirder-Dan is never one for the obvious pick, and this time he's gone for the 1972 comedy sci-fi cult-classic The Thing With Two Heads. Checkout some of Dan's fantastic content on https://www.spiderdanandthesecretbores.com. Directed by Lee Frost, the film was produced by American International Pictures, known for its exploitation films. The story follows a racist, dying doctor, played by Ray Milland, who transplants his head onto the body of a Black death row inmate, portrayed by former NFL star Rosey Grier. The premise combined elements of social commentary with campy horror, aiming to attract audiences with its bizarre and provocative concept. The film's low budget necessitated creative solutions for the special effects, particularly the depiction of the two-headed character, which was achieved using practical effects, makeup, and clever camera angles to create the illusion of a shared body. Filming took place primarily in Los Angeles, utilizing local locations and sound stages to manage costs effectively. The production schedule was tight, and the cast and crew had to work quickly to complete the project within budget constraints. Despite these challenges, the actors embraced the film's outrageous premise, with Milland and Grier delivering performances that balanced the film's campy tone with moments of genuine humor and tension. Oscar-winning special effects genius Tom Woodruff, Jr joins us and takes us on a whirlwind tour of his first steps into the wonderful world of monster movies via The Thing With Two Heads (1972) – a blaxploitation sci-fi adventure starring Ray Milland as a racist mad scientist hellbent on perfecting his head transplanting technique before he succumbs to a terminal illness, and Rosey Grier as the innocent death row inmate who unwittingly volunteers for his experiments. The result? About three reels of cars chases with Grier gamefully dirt biking with Milland's head sellotaped to his shoulder. The film itself might not be a masterpiece, but it has a surprising number of connections to Tom's career... and many of them involve gorilla suits! Follow Tom on Instagram! For a few blissful moments shortly after midnight on June 5, 1968, young campaign staffer Michael Zagaris believed Bobby Kennedy would become President. The Senator had just won the California primary, but moments after his victory speech at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, he was assassinated--as Zagaris and others looked on in horror. In Part 1 of our wide-ranging look at his legendary career, Zagaris recounts RFK’s shooting and the impact it had on his psyche and aspirations. Ultimately, advice from guitar god Eric Clapton--after the two had shared several bowls of hashish in a Sausalito hotel room--would compel Zagaris to become a photographer, one who would make a massive impact in the rock n’ roll and sports worlds. We learn about his Baptism By Vomit (courtesy of drunken Doors frontman Jim Morrison) and much, much more.

Chicago - A Hit By Varèse (1972) There was a time when Chicago was a VERY political (left-leaning) band. Endorsing "the revolution in all its forms". I remember being extremely excited with the sense of discovery collecting their discography. You would play a Chicago album, and you could be sure of two things: Hits that you've heard all your life on the AM radio, and talk of man's inhumanity to man, in vague but unmistakable terms. Chicago - Prologue, August 29, 1968 Chicago - Someday (August 29, 1968) I love Chicago like I love the memory of an old girlfriend during the good times. I saw them at Melody Fair in Buffalo, NY. I had strep throat from my first girlfriend. She said, "I have strep throat." I said, "I don't care! Kiss me!" I parlayed a neighbor's ticket booth gig into front row seats for my Fonzie, Rick Angle, and myself. And it was during their "comeback" tour. "Hard To Say I'm Sorry" was their hit. OUR song. Great show! Despite my pain. I could do a whole show about Chicago. I know much about this resilient band. Suffice it to say: Cocaine is a hell of a drug. Hank Ballard - How Ya Gonna Get Respect (When You Haven't Cut Your Process Yet) (1968) Co-written by James Brown. I'm reading his biography. This was the brief time when JB let himself have an afro instead of his rather specific coif. Liverpool Scene - The Day We Danced At The Dole (1969) The Liverpool Scene was a poetry band, formed around 1967. Their first record was produced by Liverpool DJ John Peel, who was then working on the pirate radio station Radio London. Despite his support, the album achieved little success, as did the other three.Public performances by the band included a (financially unsuccessful) 1969 tour when they opened for Led Zeppelin. The Liverpool Scene disbanded in April 1970. Liverpool Scene - The Raven (1969) Liverpool Scene - Love Is (1970) The Liverpool Scene - Tramcar To Frankenstein (1968) The Liverpool Scene - The Woo-Woo (1969) Catch My Soul - Original Cast Recording - Side 1 (1971) Goats and Monkeys/Wedding Chant/Ballad of Catch My Soul/Drunk/If Wives Do Fall/Cannikins Among the luminaries, Lance LeGault's trademark voice was at one point featured on self-guided tour cassettes at Elvis Presley's Graceland. PJ Proby had a hit with the Lennon-McCartney "donation" "That Means A Lot". Bob Tench sang with Jeff Beck, Humble Pie, and was a highly regarded session guitarist/singer. I picked up this album while I was vinyl-happy a month or so ago, and noticed that it hadn't been issued on CD. Quite obscure, and I think it deserves to be heard. As I said in the promo, Rosey Grier was, at one time, cast as Othello. And Jerry Lee Lewis was in the first cast as Iago. By all accounts, he was incredible. Can you imagine? Here is an article about Jerry Lee Lewis' time in the cast. David Gilmour - Cry From The Street (1978) Gilmour's pre-Pink Floyd band Bullitt reunited for this pre-Animals solo album. Bass player Rick Wills was in Foreigner later on. It's inoffensive but about as intense as oatmeal. Rick Wright - Holiday (1978) Rick Wright - Against The Odds (1978) Roger Waters and Ron Geesin - Give Birth To A Smile (1970) Featuring Pink Floyd (uncredited). Nick Mason - Wervin' (1981) Catch My Soul - Original Cast Recording - Side 2 (1971) Put Out The Light/You Told A Lie/Very Well-Go To/Willow/Seven Days And Nights/Why/Black On White/Death Chant Lou Christie - Guitars and Bongos (1966) Mae West - Criswell Predicts (1956) POACA will recall Mae West. The Wayward Bus - The Prophet (predictions by David Hoy) (1968) Wikipedia: In the early 1980s, the federal government had begun cracking down on outspoken tax protesters, whose numbers were then estimated by the Internal Revenue Service at 40,000 or more. In 1985 Tupper Saussy was found guilty of willfully failing to file a tax return for the year 1977, and sentenced to serve one year in Atlanta Federal Prison Camp. (Technically, he filed a Fifth Amendment return, a discredited tax dodge that was popular with tax protesters in the 1970s and early 1980s. He also issued something called PMOC, or "Public Money Office Certificates," and used them instead of money to pay for some services while living in Sewanee.) Saussy fled in 1987 rather than begin serving a sentence at the federal prison in Atlanta. Thus began a game of cat-and-mouse with U.S. marshals that only ended in November 1997 outside his home in Venice Beach, California. Saussy's appeal was denied by the Supreme Court. Saussy eventually served a 14-month sentence at Taft Correctional Institution in Taft, California. Saussy was given the job of chapel music director and piano instructor to prisoners. Saussy was released from prison on May 12, 1999 Otis Redding - Stay In School PSA (1967) Donny Most - Rock Is Dead (1976) Ross Bagdasarian - Come-On-A-My House (1966) The man behind The Chipmunks craze offers up a swinging version of his own composition. Nick Mason - Hot River (1981)

Gary and Frank welcome one of the finest actors we've ever had the pleasure to meet to Booth One! Francis Guinan has been with the Steppenwolf Theatre ensemble since 1979 and has appeared in a remarkable number of shows. Check out the list of past productions on his Steppenwolf bio. We have seen many of them and his work is simply not to be missed. Speaking of not to be missed...he is currently appearing in a world premiere of Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Bruce Norris's Downstate alongside a breathtaking ensemble cast. Beautifully staged by Tony award winner Pam MacKinnon, it is a co-production with the National Theatre of Great Britain and stars several actors from there, including the marvelous Cecilia Noble. The Steppenwolf ensemble members (Glenn David, K. Todd Freeman, Francis Guinan, and Tim Hopper) are all just astonishing. Our good friend, Laura Glenn is Downstate's fabulous stage manager. The production will travel to London in the spring of 2019. Here are a couple of Downstate production shots: Fran's first show with Steppenwolf was The Real Inspector Hound. Learn more about his illustrious career there in this article from 2009. One of our favorite recent performances was in The Rembrandt, working opposite his dear friend, the late John Mahoney. Of his relationship with John, he told us they had worked together s0 often and that their 30 years of shared history was "present in every glance." Fran said John was immensely generous on stage and off...Check out this Chicago Tonight interview with John and Fran talking about the last show they would do together. A shot with the the great Audrey Francis in You Got Older: Francis talks about the magic that only happens in a theater. How sometimes you can say a line to an audience of 300 or more people and then there is total silence. A collective holding of breath. And that feeling is not like anything else. He talks about the vibrance and truth of the Chicago style that goes back to the Compass Players. He thanks "the Godfather of Chicago Theatre, Sheldon Patinkin for teaching so many people in our community to "Always Say Yes." That it's not about you. It is all to the benefit of the story. Whatever your fellow actor throws out there, accept it and play that moment, even if it's very different from the night before. Kiss of Death: Carol Hall Carol Hall, a songwriter who wrote the music and lyrics for "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas", which was about a brothel called the Chicken Ranch (because customers often paid with chickens), died on October 11 at age 82. Here is an excerpt from her NYT obit:"Staying behind the scenes remained her preference. She wrote three songs for “Free to Be … You and Me,” the 1972 children’s album (and television special) conceived by Marlo Thomas. One was “It’s All Right to Cry,” performed by Rosey Grier, a former professional football player. She also wrote for Sesame Street and Barbra Streisand.

Joshua Neuman and Tunisha Singleton take the occasion to re-visit an ongoing conversation about the relationship of politics and pro sports, chronicling the often overlooked moments that the Los Angeles Rams have been on the right side of progress in America—from Kenny Washington, to Tank Younger, to Rosey Grier, to James Harris, to Michael Sam, just to name a few. This week we’re watching the uncomfortable 1972 film, The Thing with Two Heads, Heads? Steve Carlson joins Paul & Chris to review this film labeled incorrectly as comedy, scifi and horror. Spoiler alert: it should just be labeled bad. This film is produced by Samuel Z. Arkoff who Chris confuses with Dr. Zarkov from Flash Gordon. Steve shares that 7 time, Oscar winning make up artist, Rick Baker was the man in the 2-headed gorilla costume. Paul is reminded of Tropic Thunder when he hears the racist doctor in the film say, “you people.” They need a brain dead patient in the film. Too bad they couldn’t break the 4th wall and choose one of us audience members. Rosie Grier gets his own death march disco. One of the prisoners makes Chris think of his favorite Dolemite character, the creeper. We all agree the best line in the film, “Do you have two of anything else?” Paul, Chris and Steve recast the film for a remake. Will Smith & Mark Walberg, Chris Rock & Phil Robertson, Jamie Foxx & Jon Lovitz and a few others. Scroll down the Wikipedia page and learn The Arkoff formula for successful films. Rosey Grier, Michael Irvin, Warren Sapp, Jack Youngblood, Jennifer Allen and Willie McGinest... The game lost a legend on Monday after the passing of Pro Football Hall of Famer David "Deacon" Jones. This special edition of "The Rich Eisen Podcast" recounts the profound impact that Deacon had, both on and off the gridiron. The final surviving member of “The Fearsome Foursome,” Rosey Grier, joins Rich to remember his teammate and longtime friend. Joining Grier and Rich during the interview is fellow Hall of Famer Michael Irvin and class of 2013 inductee Warren Sapp, who share their memories of Deacon. Rich then dials up yet another Hall of Famer, as Jack Youngblood joins the podcast to discuss what it was like learning from “The Secretary of Defense” as a rookie with the Los Angeles Rams, and also shares some good stories from their days in Canton, Ohio, for Hall of Fame inductions. Jennifer Allen, the daughter of Hall of Fame coach George Allen and sister to Washington Redskins GM Bruce Allen, phones in to share her unique perspective on Deacon. Jones was an extremely close family friend of the Allens while Jennifer was growing up and remained such until his death Monday. And lastly, our own Willie McGinest stops by the studio to share what Deacon meant to him as an outside linebacker/defensive end who played in the league 30-plus years after Deacon did, and what it was like meeting and talking to him at various NFL events they would both be at together throughout the years.
