When Covid-19 first hit New York City, hospitals faced unprecedented patient surges. Queens, in particular, became an epicenter, overwhelming local facilities. Northwell Health's John D'Angelo, MD, then operations chief for the Covid Command Center, recognized the urgent need to distribute this burden more evenly across the system. His solution: load-balancing. In Part 2 of this three-part conversation, you'll hear how load balancing helped Northwell hospitals manage months-long surges and served as a model for other health systems. You'll also hear from Mangala Narasimhan, DO who, like Dr. D'Angelo, played a pivotal role in Northwell's response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Five years later, they sat down with Sandra Lindsay, RN, to reflect on this turbulant (and traumatic) time in our history.  Meet our guests John D'Angelo, MD, Executive Vice President and Market President, Northwell Health's Central Market Mangala Narasimhan, DO, Director, Critical Care Services, Northwell and medical director of the acute lung injury ECMO program This is Part 2 of their conversation. She shares how she grew through friendships and storytelling, driven by a desire to learn more, do more, and pursue a field where she could help others. Mushairat emphasizes the importance of discussing feelings, emotions, love, and relationships to support mental health, even when these topics are considered taboo. She highlights her experience speaking with women across all age groups, valuing the significance of hearing them discuss their health and bodies, and challenging long-standing cultural norms. Mushairat encourages women to use their voices to advocate for themselves and others, engage in meaningful issues, and promote change. Menopause and age raise our cardiovascular disease risk. Athletes and highly active people also tend to have a higher prevalence of coronary artery calcium and atherosclerotic plaque (though it tends to be the benign kind). But what does that all mean? How can we know what's really going on in those coronary arteries of ours? To find out, host Selene Yeager had a Cleerly-enabled coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA), which uses AI-enabled software to help characterize coronary plaque composition and cardiovascular disease risk. This week, she sat down with Anita Vadria, MS, PA-C, who is the Director of Medical Science Liaisons and Clinical Education at Cleerly to go over her results, talk about plaque and heart disease risk, and how technology is helping advance our understanding of our personal risk. A transcript is available onlineAmerica is obsessed with food. And it's killing us.It's estimated that half of all Americans will be obese within a decade. Overweight and obesity are directly tied to heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, joint disorders, erectile dysfunction, high blood pressure, stroke, and contribute to dementia and some cancers. On today's program we focus on how the object of our obsession could — just maybe — become the means to our better health. What does it mean to think of food as medicine? Our guests are Dr. Miles Hassell, board certified in internal medicine and in private practice at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland, Oregon. He established the Integrative Medicine Program at Providence Cancer Center and is Associate Medical Director/Professor at Pacific University School of Physician Assistant Studies. He uses evidence-based nutrition and exercise options in his medical practice and lectures widely to physician groups regarding the use of nutritional medicine. Ashley is the Founder of Working Mom Notes, a supportive platform for working mothers. She struggled to find resources as she returned to work after having her first baby. Her goal was to connect with a few working moms and share “notes” with one another on how to navigate life as a working mother. Ashley knows that being a mom is hard in and of itself. Add in the stresses of balancing a job and the combination can really take a toll. It's hard to find support and work through the challenges of being a working mom, whether it's a choice or a necessity. Ashley uses Instagram to shed light on the day-to-day struggles and triumphs of working mothers. She is known for providing real and raw moments to her audience. Her goal is to build confidence in working women and help them feel they have a network of others that can relate to their lifestyle. Also within this network, Ashley provides topics of discussion to help break stereotypes. Examples include discussing salary gaps, work travel, maternity leave rights, postpartum depression/anxiety, breastfeeding versus formula feeding, and how to set boundaries both professionally and personally. By broaching these topics, it allows women to see they are not alone and feel more confident in their thoughts and actions. Ashley has a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training and Biology. She worked in Manhattan for a physical therapy company as an Athletic Trainer performing sports medicine rehabilitation. She then went on to graduate school and received a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences and a Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies. Do you feel like the words “heavy metals” are getting a lot of buzz lately? It seems like it's hot topic that you read about on social media where everybody's like, “Maybe I do have mercury poisoning? Maybe I have lead poisoning?” My guest today is going to give you the lowdown on how heavy metals and other toxins affect gut health and what you can do about it. Today's guest, Dr. Sonza Curtis, ND, PA-C, IFMP, has a doctorate in Naturopathy for Healthcare Professionals and was certified through the Institute of Functional Medicine. She completed her undergraduate and master of Physician Assistant Studies at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. She has additional advanced training and specializes in Gut, Autoimmune, and Hormone health. Dr. Sonza has always been committed to helping people get better naturally and has many techniques built into her practice designed to help patients get back to health better than before they came through her doors. Her ability to listen carefully to her patients, along with the mix of western medicine and naturopathy, make her a top Functional Medicine doctor in the Atlanta metro area. Join us as we discuss everything surrounding heavy metals. Have you ever done heavy metal testing or tried a heavy metal detox? What worked or what did you learn? Tell me about it in the comments! In this episode: What are heavy metals specifically and how do they differ from minerals like zinc, sodium, or potassium What are the most common origins for heavy metal toxicity? Why heavy metal toxicity is higher in women during menopause Important things you should do before a heavy metal detox When to see a Functional Medicine Doctor Quotes “We're full of metals, even as we're talking in the EMFs and different things of that nature, if a person is very sensitive sometimes they can't even take that… The two negatives repel. Sometimes even the conductivity in electronics can cause patients issues that can trigger, even intensify their heavy metals.” [7:30] “If you're not pooping on a regular basis, guess what you're doing with that toxin? You're recirculating the toxins, and it's going to stay in there stronger. You have to make sure all the process of where you're detoxing is optimal before you start pushing things and trying to get it out.” [20:05] Links Connect with Dr. Sonza Curtis online Follow Dr. Sonza on Instagram | Facebook | LinkedIn Healthy Skin Show ep.147: Could Breast Implant Illness Be Your Rash Trigger? w/ Dr. Anthony Youn
