Hosts Michael Snyder and Joseph Gushue kick off a two-part series on artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on intellectual property (IP) rights in an individual's persona. They delve into generative AI, explaining how it creates text, images, and voices that closely mimic human attributes, and discuss the right of publicity, a legal doctrine that protects an individual's likeness and voice from unauthorized commercial use. The hosts explore AI's portrayal of humans in pop culture, citing films like Terminator 2, S1m0ne, and Her to illustrate AI's potential to replicate human beings. These examples set the stage for a deeper understanding of the real-world implications of AI in the realm of IP. Michael and Joe explain how generative AI models, trained on vast amounts of data, produce human-like outputs, highlighting the complexities of AI in the context of IP rights. They discuss historical and contemporary cases, such as Bette Midler vs. Ford Motor Company, Tom Waits vs. Frito-Lay, and the recent controversy involving Scarlett Johansson and OpenAI, to underscore the significance of the right of publicity in the age of AI. The episode wraps up with reflections on the ongoing concerns with new technology and IP rights, noting these issues have recurred throughout history with each technological leap. This is Part One of a two-part series. Stay tuned for Part Two. In the year 2002, film director Viktor Taransky played by Al Pacino asks the question: "What if we replaced actors with artificial intelligence?" and he gets laughed off the metaphorical stage of hollywood; over 20 years later SAG-AFTRA and the WGA go head to head with AMPTP on the question: "What if we replaced actors with artificial intelligence?"

This week it gets lonely at night, as we live in a twilight world and there are no friends at dusk. We welcome Matt Pollock (Matty's Movie Burner) back to the program on the final Friday of the month to induct a new entry into the podcast canon: 2020's Tenet, written and directed by Christopher Nolan, and starring John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Kenneth Branagh, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Himesh Patel, Clémence Poésy, Michael Caine, Martin Donovan, Dimple Kapadia, and former NHL super-pest Sean Avery. One of the few major theatrical releases of the COVID era, it was only just re-released to theaters to capitalize on Oppenheimer's Oscar momentum. But it's a polarizing movie to be sure. While the three of us love it a great deal, it is not a popular sentiment. We do our best to analyze why people put this undeniable gorgeous and visually inventive movie in the crosshairs, and if a critical re-appraisal is due. Plus it's not all Tenet talk, as Matty and J Mo combines for Theatrical Field Reports on Late Night with the Devil, Snack Shack and Love Lies Bleeding. Be forewarned: this is our longest episode ever, and you may want to watch the film before listening along. Unfortunately, at the time of publication, Tenet is currently unavailable for streaming in Canada, though, you know, you could check it out of the library if you're keen. Other works referenced in this episode include Wonka, Paddington, Paddington 2, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, Licorice Pizza, Sex Drive, American Pie, Thirteen, Trainspotting, Kids, Heat, Superbad, Pineapple Express, The To-Do List, The Way Way Back, The Dark Knight, Early Edition, Prisoners, Dune: Part 1, S1m0ne, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning: Part 1, The Holdovers, The Iron Claw, Dune: Part 2, The Fabelmans, Dazed and Confused, California Split, A History of Violence, Gone Baby Gone, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, The Garbage Pail Kids Movie, Footloose, X-Men '97, Spider-Man: The Animated Series, Madame Web, Dune (1984), Arrival, Hot Rod, The Departed, The Invisible Man, In Bruges, Widows, Inception, 12 Monkeys, The Terminator, Looper, Dunkirk, Munich, Belfast, Love Actually..., A Haunting in Venice, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, Interstellar, Good Time, High Life, The Lost City of Z, The Boy and the Heron, the Twilight saga, May-December, Station Eleven, Weeds, Insomnia, The Art of Racing in the Rain, Malcolm X, The Dark Knight Rises, Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade, E.T., Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Jurassic Park, and Good Will Hunting among others. We'll be back next week to kick off April as we check back in with our old pal Tom Cruise and follow him over to Japan for 2003's The Last Samurai, a movie which is presently unavailable to stream in Canada but can be rented on Amazon and YouTube. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

It's a big commitment, but after the first couple handful of movies, he is still enjoying it! Jay jumped into a slightly smaller commitment by watching Kevin Costner's 1990 epic drama Dances With Wolves. Tune in to find out what Jay's Sioux name is. Sci-Fi Saturdays The last couple weeks have given us two different movies you'll want to revisit on Sci-Fi Saturdays. S1m0ne has an interesting take on AI and how it could be used in Hollywood. But revisiting this 2002 movie in 2024 gives it a whole different meaning. Plus, Jay breaks down the final Star Trek: The Next Generation movie Star Trek: Nemesis. It may not have been the best Star Trek film, but there were some pretty fascinating performances in it. Make sure to play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. Plus, you can tune in to SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua break down each episode of the entire MCU. Enjoy Presidents! As long as there have been movies, we have needed to have someone portray the United States Commander in Chief. A lot of times these leaders weren't the ones we know from history. Instead, the actor or actress portraying them gets to come up with their own persona. So which ones stood out? What were some of our favorite fictional presidents that gave a good speech, or showed good leadership, or even kicked some butt and saved the day? Which of our fictional presidents would you like to be your leader? Which ones would you make sure not to vote for? First person that emails me with the subject line, “My fellow Americans” will get a special mention on the show. Let us know. Andrew joins Ben to discuss a word that is the sliver of overlap in the Venn diagram of the previous two episodes: animate and robot. Ben brings up a (very) minor controversy for Geoff Keighley's “The Game Awards” independent game nominees this year involving Mint Rocket's “Dave the Diver.” Andrew goes on an exotic adventure with a Pringles flavor all the way from Japan! After a very quick definition segment, Andrew shares a traumatic event from his youth involving an animatronic alien at Universal Studios, and then more 70s and 80s movies are discussed. Ben drops a quick Hall of Presidents conspiracy theory and some sad Chuck E. Cheese news before he talks about the interesting origin story of Scott Cawthorn's incredibly popular “Five Nights at Freddy's” franchise. Finally, they come up with an amazing new restaurant idea to close out the show. 00:00:21 - Vacuuming robot revolution crisis possibly averted, pictures with Santa, and work 00:03:35 - Fight Club villain discovery, mental health, and more happy controversial things 00:05:27 - “Dave the Diver” Independent GOTY nomination, and the inventor of the seed drill 00:08:34 - No GOTY love for “RoboCop: Rogue City,” and Ben is just a little disappointed 00:10:15 - How to classify games a independently developed, and a Double Fine edge case 00:12:10 - Andrew's sensory adventure… Addictive Garlic Butter flavored Japanese Pringles! 00:16:45 - The official verdict, the definition, Disney's contributions, Billy Bass, and clockwork 00:22:32 - Scary animatronics, the Neil Diamond antidote, and Andrew's E.T. ride trauma 00:27:00 - Eliot the insurance policy, Stranger Things, and extraterrestrials for the woke agenda 00:29:36 - Blue Thunder, the underrated acting prowess of Roy Scheider, and a JAFO hat 00:31:42 - Bruce the pneumatic shark, cool to creepy, and wanting to take Teddy Ruxpin apart 00:34:29 - At an appropriate distance, David S. In 2002, S1m0ne posed the question of what would happen if we were to replace actors with computers. What 20 years ago seemed like a fantasy in the realm of science fiction has increasingly begun to rear its head in our world, and we as a society are still grappling with the consequences and implications of our increasingly virtual reality. Computer-generated actors, models, influencers, and pop stars, we've got them all on this week's episode. Hosted by Liam, Abram, and Pam. It stars Al Pacino, Catherine Keener, Evan Rachel Wood, Rachel Roberts, Jay Mohr, and Winona Ryder. “Sci-fi meets Al Pacino? I’m in.” Inspired by Instagram, we watched S1M0NE, a movie from the early 2000s about the rise to fame of a CGI actress. In this episode of Viewing Party, we compare Childish Gambino to *NSYNC, spend too much time googling sexy shiny fabric, Katie considers becoming a Channing evangelist, and Wesleigh, much to her own chagrin, misidentifies a font (it’s Eurostile, not Bank Gothic!).
Two Al Pacino films that tell us about humanity. Scent of a Woman as a film that was definitely of the time. Taking a stop down for the question of “how did this get made?” A prep school student needing … Continue reading →

My guest for this month is Serenity Caldwell, and she’s joined me to discuss the film she chose for me, the 2002 American science-fiction romantic comedy film S1m0ne. You can follow the show on Twitter @cinemagadfly. Show notes: Andrew Niccol, who directed this film, is also married to its star, Rachel Roberts Al Pacino is an actor, perhaps you’ve heard of him Gattaca is also a film by Andrew Niccol Alphaville is the film we discussed on the previous episode of this podcast The dot-com era was a period where tech companies with no future got lots of money, completely unlike today Second Life is a virtual reality world that you can run around in One of the more notable things about Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace is its ridiculously long title The first Lord of the Rings film, The Fellowship of the Ring came out in 2001 3.5" hard drives are still used as internal storage in slow computers The Mac Pro and PowerMac G4 are both computers from Apple, they are both relatively recent 5.25" floppies on the other hand, haven’t been used regularly in a very, very long time Hackers is a phenomenal film about, well, hacking An SNL parody of this film would probably just be this film John Cassavetes was an actor and director, and a pioneer of American independent film Michelangelo Antonioni made quite a few masterpieces with a monochromatic color palette Notting Hill is a 1999 film starting Julia Roberts, written by the guy who wrote Four Weddings and a Funeral Roberto Rossellini was an Italian neorealist director The Auteur theory is a vision of cinema where the director is the sole voice of the film The Crow is seriously every goth kids dream The stars of The Force Awakens, including Daisy Ridley, are newly famous, and dealing with it in interesting ways People Magazine is a celebrity “news” periodical Rebecca Romijn is also in this film, in a tiny but fun role Jason Schwartzman is a national treasure, and can do no wrong We are in the 2016 presidential election cycle, and Donald Trump is a leading candidate. We’ve clearly gone crazy I am huge Catherine Keener fan, but man is she misused here This film stars a young Evan Rachel Wood, she’s great Winona Ryder is probably the best thing about this entire film Seriously, there are three versions of A Star is Born already, and a fourth is in the works 42nd Street is another film about the process of stardom The Tupac Shakur hologram at Coachella was so creepy Jean-Luc Godard directed Alphaville, among many others Niccol only wrote The Truman Show. It was directed by Peter Weir, who also made Picnic at Hanging Rock and Dead Poets Society, among others Niccol’s did direct In Time with Justin Timberlake, as well as The Host, and Good Kill, none of which I’ve heard of We should do an alternate episode where Siri is our main guest for this film Go check out The Incomparable, they have some seriously great podcasts Rent or buy the film from iTunes Rent or buy the film from Amazon
