So much happened with Twitter. It broke, or maybe they broke it. Then they broke it more, possibly trying to fix it. It's still broken and the vibes are off. Meta launched its new Threads app into the social hole abdicated by Twitter, and 30 million people said "ok" even though Meta is a demonstrably terrible brand that chooses profit over people over and over and over again. We'll probably check it out.  The ever increasing availability of digital surveillance tools is threatening privacy in France (the police want to turn on your phone's camera), Virginia (adults need to register with a government website to view porn), and Sacramento (the Sheriff illegally shares license plate data with police in states that have criminalized abortion). Meanwhile in England, a newspaper was forced to publish a front-page apology for a sexist (but not racist!!!) article about Meghan Markle (it was racist).   Threads' privacy policy: https://help.instagram.com/515230437301944  French law: https://gazettengr.com/france-passes-bill-to-allow-police-remotely-activate-phone-camea-microphone-spy-on-people/  Sacramento Sheriff: https://news.yahoo.com/sacramento-sheriff-sharing-license-plate-133000119.html  Virginia is for lovers (not filthy perverts): https://www.wired.com/story/porn-age-checks-id-laws/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Boca do Rio was the second band to be awarded the annual Davis Independent Music Initiative (DIMI) grant, in 2021. The committee that awarded it included the 2020 winner, Davis musician Joel Daniel of the Hoots, reported the Sacramento News and Review in July 2021: "The grant is part of an annual effort to boost Davis's music scene by providing one local band with funding. Daniel's hope is that it offers musicians who might otherwise seek a career in Sacramento or the Bay Area the support they need to foster their talents closer to home." Applications for the 2022 grant are due by April 1. We wrap up this show playing a Led Zeppelin song as interpreted by the Alex Jenkins Trio. Here is an All About Jazz review of their newest album, Tri-Cycle, from 2021.

We will get to know her stories, and hear some of her great music from her album “The Well” like, “Chamomile and Cocaine” and “The Gospel of Good Intentions” on this episode of the dHarmic Evolution with Katie Knipp! More about Katie Knipp Listen and support Katie and her music. We listened to some of her tracks and she shared a lot of great stories, but there's definitely more to hear from her, so don't forget to check out all the links provided below! Quotes: 13:13 I always, always write the song first, to the point where I can perform it as a solo act. If those things can't happen, the song isn't ready. I'm not just all about the studio stuff. The saxophone and all the great musicians that I add to it are just icing on the cake, but I feel like it's so important to make sure that the song stands on its own. 17:56 I felt very depressed. I was like, pray, and the words just came. He said, in my mind, it just came to me. He said, “Do you see how much you love it now? Do you see that music is love? Just like my love for you is never-ending. You can trust that your music is love and is never-ending and will never leave you or go away.” 36:23 There have always been some stories, I've had some experiences that forced me into, “Why to write a song in the first place?” And I feel blessed by those experiences, even if they were hard at the time. 37:58 I think about that a lot of the time. Because, I'm like, “I don't care what you think. I'm old. I'm here. I'm doing this. If you don't like it, move aside, because these people do. It's totally fine.” 39:03 When you think about a voice, it's like a thumbprint. First of all, it's unique to everybody. If you don't like somebody's voice, that's perfectly fine. To me, it's like wine or food. You have a specific palate for what you like to hear from somebody's mouth. I completely get that I'm not for everybody. So that's a huge thing that transformed my “balls out”, way of going about singing. It's like, “Oh, I don't care anymore.” Timestamps:   00:20     Introducing Katie Knipp 03:12     What was Katie's defining moment when she finally found her voice and style. 05:57     Katie shares what came in first in terms of playing instruments. 08:50     Listen to “Chamomile and Cocaine” by Katie Knipp 12:34     Katie takes us into the studio to the experience of “Chamomile and Cocaine” 15:07     How long has Katie worked with the musicians in her band? 16:56     As a mother of two little ones and with her career choice, how is Katie working things out? 20:55     What are the writing habits and process's of Katie Knipp 23:43     Listen to “The Gospel of Good Intentions” by Katie Knipp 29:28     Is there a certain group of people that “The Gospel of Good Intentions” is intended for? 31:15     Katie takes us to her experience while recording the track “The Gospel of Good Intentions” 34:46     When did Katie come into total honesty with her music? 40:07     Katie shares funny and unusual experiences during a gig. 43:19     What is a chill time like for Katie outside of music? 45:54     How are Katie's boys experiencing music now. 47:32     Get to hear Katie's advice for young and upcoming musicians, artists, singer-songwriters. 49:53     Listen to “Ride On” by James Kevin O'Connor Spotify Playlist:  Check out the Spotify playlist that features the dHarmic Evolution alumni artists. In this first episode, we’re taking a look at The Future of News in California, and how the pandemic has added more stress to local newspapers, which are already in a downward spiral. If they keep cutting back, or close for good, how will we Californians get our news? We’re talking about that with: * Colleen McCain Nelson, the brand new editor in chief of the Sacramento Bee, and regional editor of the McClatchy company’s four other newspapers in California * Jeff VonKaenel (pictured top right), owner of the News & Review, which has published free weekly community newspapers in Sacramento and Chico for over 40 years. PODCAST PLAY BY PLAY * 0 to 8 minutes - Why we're doing this new "This Changes Everything" podcast, and intro to the Bee's new editor Colleen Nelson * 9:38 min - How can someone who never lived in California be the right pick as top editor for five California newspapers? * 12:55 - Nelson's answer to the people who say, "I don't subscribe to the Bee because there's nothing to read in it anymore." * 15:25 - The controversy around "clickbaiting," and how to balance publishing stories that people find interesting to read and publish stories that they should be reading * 20:12 - Should newspapers focus on certain topics because they've got the staffing (i.e., political reporters in Sacramento) or the reader interest (i.e., restaurants), and less on other topics that don't have that support? * 23:15 - How the Bee newspapers are covering equity and diversity now * 28:35 - How the new Community Advisory Boards will work * 32:20 - Why do hedge funds and billionaires like Jeff Bezos want to buy newspapers, and what does that mean for the future of news? * 37:30 - What keeps Nelson motivated to keep working in an industry that everyone says is near death ----- * 43:30 min - Intro to Jeff VonKaenel * 44:50 min - He describes the day when he knew the coronavirus would make him layoff 40-plus staffers and stop publishing the papers * 47:20 min - What goes into the $45,000-per-week cost for publishing newspapers that don't charge for subscriptions * 50 min - Is the financial model of being supported by advertising totally dead? * 53 min - If free community newspapers stop printing, where will people get their local news? And do people know -- and care -- about this crisis? * 56:40 min - VonKaenel talks about the Independent Journalism Fund he started * 57:55 min - Google and Facebook are setting up multimillion-dollar funds to rescue local journalism -- even though they're seen as the reasons why local newspapers are dying. Will VonKaenel take their money? * 1 hr, 55 sec - What he has in mind for a new business plan to save local media * 1 hr, 7:40 min - What Californians can do to ensure local journalism stays alive and thrives NOTABLE LINKS * McClatchy Company, owners of the Sacramento Bee, Fresno Bee, Modesto Bee, Merced Sun-Star and The Tribune in San Luis Obispo - www.mcclatchy.com/ * News and Review, which publishes in Chico, Sacramento and Reno - www.newsreview.com * Nieman Journalism Lab, a great website to read (for free)about what the future of journalism could look like - www.niemanlab.org * The title of the book that Vanessa couldn't remember when talking to VonKaenel about the connection between newspapers and democracy is "Ghosting the News" by Margaret Sullivan - https://globalreports.columbia.edu/books/ghosting-the-news/ Photo credit: Terry Hagz, Sacramento News & Review

I met comedian Keith Lowell Jensen shortly after I moved to Sacramento in 2013. We first got to know each other when I interviewed him for the local newspaper, Sacramento News and Review, but soon became friends. Before the pandemic, we were getting wieners on a regular basis. (It technically started as hot dogs for lunch, but soon wieners became synonymous with hanging out) Of the many things we bonded over, a mutual love for ska was high on the list, especially when Keith learned I was writing a book about ska. He insisted that I include him in the book with a chapter called “My Friend Keith Likes Ska.” That didn’t happen, but here we are a few months before In Defense of Ska releases and “My Friend Keith Likes Ska” is now a reality—as a podcast episode. Keith always hires a clown for his birthday partiesIn this episode, Keith talks about local Sacramento band Filibuster (Who Keith attempted to manage for a minute), his love for Fishbone (He was at that crazy Warfield show at the beginning of Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone), and a slew of other topics. One highlight this week comes by way of co-host Adam Davis, who revealed that his childhood church had a “No Skaw dancing” policy at their dances. Scandalous! Check out Keith’s latest special Not For Rehire on Amazon Prime and leave a review. Also be sure to pick up his book Punching Nazis and Other Good Ideas. Keith also has a podcast. Make sure you listen to the episode when he brings on In Defense of Ska author Aaron Carnes. Follow Keith on Twitter. His next book, What I Was Arrested For will be available for pre-order soon. Dave thinks it’s time for the City to rethink the City ordinance, to scrap it, and focus on housing and services. Supporters of the camping law want to move past this fight and focus on housing too. But that housing is not coming anytime soon . And the question remains, where can the homeless go tonight.

-- Recorded February 12, 2017 at the CLARA auditorium in Midtown Sacramento This may not be considered as "serious" a topic for discussion as policy and politics, but relationships are truly serious matters of the heart. Most of us want that special someone, sometimes for a night or for a lifetime. And California has had a big impact on how dating and relationships are done around the globe -- websites and apps that started here include Match.com, Tinder, Grindr, Snapchat and Down (formerly Bang With Friends). And don't forget "Netflix and Chill." Listen to this post-Sunday brunch discussion about dating, love, sex and relationships -- and how California's culture, technology and higher-ed research are changing how we experience them. Whether you're single, married, committed or "it's complicated," you'll learn something interesting about why the heart wants what it wants. PANELISTS * Jenn Brian, CEO of The Dating Queen, which does date planning, coaching and matchmaking * Adam Busch, founder of DateNight XO, a weekly email that provides ideas for date nights * Joey Garcia, relationships columnist for Sacramento News & Review * Patrick Harbison, owner of Patrick Harbison Public Relations * Leigh Smith, graduate researcher in the Attraction and Relationships Laboratory at UC Davis * Jordan Venema, contributing writer for Sacramento magazine -- he wrote the "Dating Game" feature in this month's issue

Chanowk Yisrael, Founder of The Yisrael Family Urban Farm, is an urban farmer, community activist and husband. Born and raised in Sacramento, he traveled across the country for 10 years on the dime of corporate America before deciding to trade in his frequent flyer miles for seeds and soil. Chanowk terms what he does as “social entrepreneurship,” a lifestyle that sustains his family and aids his neighborhood in South Oak Park (a food dessert according to the USDA). Chanowk’s story has been featured in several publications including The Sacramento Bee, Sacramento Press, Edible Sacramento and Sacramento News and Review. Chanowk’s parents are both cancer survivors and doctors often informed him that many of these diseases are hereditary, but he believes that it is eating habits that are hereditary. These events prompted Chanowk to break the cycle of poor eating habits that typically plague the Black community and transition himself and his family to a plant based diet. It is here that The Yisrael Family Urban Farm was born. The Yisrael Family Urban Farm is transforming the hood for good using urban agriculture as a tool to engage, employ and empower communities. This is done through primarily through agriculture education, cooking classes, and youth mentorship. Deirdre is the Queen of Sacramento News with an impressive 20 year run as the morning anchor and particular feature reporter focusing on all things health. I met her many years ago, and have been on the morning news many times to promote books and events with her. Deirdre’s business is to create fabulously produced shows that tell a big story in quick three minutes, five minutes, or even 15 second sound bites. So, I wanted her to change gears with me, sit down, unwind and get talking about her fantastic journey that landed her in Sacramento and what’s kept her here ever since. When you hear Deirdre’s story, it will call to mind “Luck is where preparation meets opportunity.” She is a real go-getter and a very inspirational force of nature. The theme of the show? We couldn’t decide. I think we are both super-fast-moving types and hit many tangents and insights so you’ll have to listen and reflect and pick up on the themes that resonate with you. In a nutshell, we talk about modern media and how it’s changed with the influence of mobile technology and social media, the impact it has had on our careers and how we divulge information differently now. We also discuss how she continually finds herself in new and exciting opportunities by making sure to take advantage of propositions when they knock at her door. Sitting back, wishing and hoping for the good life isn’t what got Dierdre where she is. It’s been all about enthusiasm and pushing forward at any given turn. Her career-transforming role as the Special Olympics correspondent for dozens of Hearst-owned TV stations across America, and the fact that she has been to ten different Olympics over her life is just one example of the chances she honored for herself that took her life in an upward swing. We also talk about identifying which of Gretchen Rubin’s Four Tendencies ( https://quiz.gretchenrubin.com ) you are and accepting that in your career choice and daily routine. You can absolutely work with tendencies and weaknesses that are unique to your character to create a stronger you. Of course, we also talk about her new podcast called Dying to Ask ( https://www.kcra.com/article/podcast-are-you-missing-the-point-of-the-keto-diet/25217323 ). I dig this wild, fast-moving interview with Sacramento KCRA 3 News Queen @deirdreFitzpatrick1. She indeed asked some great questions, and we covered a lot of new ground relating to Speedgolf, the ketogenic diet, and cultivating a pure motivation for peak performance. Deirdre manages to do the early morning news, train for great endurance feats, and be a super mom to two kids, and we talk about how she manages to keep up with it all. We go off on a tangent regarding parenting idealisms and strategies, and what it means to be a modern-day parent. Did she get into a peak performance lifestyle through being born with a truly gritty and resilient nature, or did she develop these attributes through hard work and habit?
