I'm back. Because silence isn't an option right now. In this episode, I share how graduate study / critical inquiry into leadership and social psychology is helping me make sense of an upside-down world. Groupthink, aka hive mind, isn't just a 'culty' thing. Conformity happens everywhere along the political spectrum. I speak to how unspoken "display rules" keep us from speaking up, then make the argument that Democratic leaders in Washington desperately need to ditch cultural etiquette in order to demand accountability. I also share J. W. Brehm's theory of reactance, which can help us to better understand friends and family members on the MAGA/MAHA right who continue to double down on misinformation. Bombarding them with actual facts will likely backfire, and I tell you why. Lastly, and most importantly, I talk about pluralistic ignorance - what it is & why understanding it is absolutely essential in the fight against fascism. Self-regulation works great for peace of mind, but it can operate like a sort of pathology when it keeps us from protecting one another and demanding justice.Referenced in this episode:The Social Animal, by Elliot AronsonInfluence: The Psychology of Persuasion by Robert CialdiniWhat is Group Think? Second of Matthew's two-part examination of why the hell questions of force, non-violent resistance with and without force, unarmed violence and property damage, and armed violence are so incredibly hard to talk about in a culture thick with spiritual and political bypassing. Are we capable of understanding the difference between morality and strategy? Part 1 focused on philosophy and psychology while today the focus will be on definitions and tactics. Together, both parts will push back on conspiracism about the identities, motives, and methods of antifascists. Both will present slices of the rich discourse on violence and non-violence from antifascist history, including clarifying definitions of key terms. Both will open a space to think carefully about what intensities of self and community defense are both useful and tolerable in the fight against fascism. Today we'll get into the very thick weeds of how the “strategic nonviolence” research of Gene Sharp, Erica Chenoweth and Maria Stephan is framed as empirical, but may be way more about idealizing Gandhi than about facts on the ground. The HBS hosts ask Devin Shaw whether and how to punch Nazis.[NOTE: This is a REPLAY episode, first aired on Jun2, 2023. The HBS hosts will be back with new episodes for Season 11 starting on September 13, 2024!]Since at least the 2016 election the word fascism has emerged from the historical archive to contemporary political debates. This question has primarily been one about the identity of fascism, what are its minimal characteristics? To what extent can the Trump administration be considered fascist, and so on? We discussed some of this last season with Alberto Toscano. As much as this question of definition is important, a no less important question is what to do in the face of fascism. How to respond. It is on this point that the opposition to fascism divides rather sharply between those who argue that fascism must be countered with the norms of civil society, debated, discussed and defeated in the marketplace of ideas and those who argue that the violence of fascism must be met with counter-violence.In this episode, we are joined by Devin Shaw, who teaches at Douglas College and is the author of Philosophy of Antifascism: Punching Nazis and Fighting White Supremacy. Richard Warman used to take neo-nazis he found online to the human rights commission. He used an obscure provision called Section 13, which was repealed in 2014. But it may be coming back. The long-awaited Online Harms Act includes a section allowing users to sue each other for hate speech online. Free speech advocates are worried, but some say it's time trolls start behaving. Who gets to decide what's hate speech? Is this the end of online hate or the start of something more sinister? To find out, Mattea Roach asked Emily Laidlaw, a Canada Research Chair in Cybersecurity Law and an Associate Professor at the University of Calgary, and Richard Moon, a law professor at the University of Windsor. Plausibly Live! - The Official Podcast of The Dave Bowman Show
I am often bemused by so many wannabe tough people proclaiming on social media that they are here to “punch Nazi's in the face!” More than once I have wondered if they would even recognize a actual Nazi if they were to see one in person? My own experience tells me that they would not, because in today's world, the attitude is that “Everyone I don't like is literally Hitler!“ That said, there was a day in 1936 when a group of men decided to… well.. punch Nazi's in the face. Their actions on this day in New York City, and the outcome of the subsequent trial, were so offensive to Adolf Hitler and his merry men, that it forced the German regime to change it's own laws. And for the first time in history, but certainly not the last, actual Nazi's were punched in their actual faces… --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/plausibly-live/message
Online sellers are smitten with Jack Smith, creating and potentially cashing in on everything from mugs to baby bibs inspired by the special counsel who indicted former President Trump. Smith's glaring face is front and center on plenty of products that have popped up since he was appointed in November to investigate Trump's handling of classified documents, as well as his actions in the wake of the 2020 election and surrounding the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot. Not only does Harrison Ford think it's cool to punch Nazis, he thinks Indiana Jones would push people out of the way to get the first punch. Walt Disney's Los Angeles home, where he created 'Cinderella' and 'Pinocchio,' is on the market as a $40,000-per-month rental. In this episode of Brews & BizDev, we do something a little different... Paul Greiner of Renoun Creative engages Jonathan Mahan, creator of the Courageous Conversations series, about the relative merits of verbally "punching Nazis" online.Yeah there's little to no "bizdev" to be found in this episode, nor is it an interview, so much as an alcohol-fueled debate about how to interact with hateful extremists. For the record, Jon's being fueled by Sam Adams '76, and Paul's enjoying a Powerful Pils by Community Beer Works.Enjoy, and let us know what YOU think! And of course, if you like our content, please subscribe and share! To find out more about Jon, check out Courageous Conversations or follow him on LinkedIn.You can also find Paul on LinkedIn, and learn more about Renoun Creative on our website.
I met comedian Keith Lowell Jensen shortly after I moved to Sacramento in 2013. We first got to know each other when I interviewed him for the local newspaper, Sacramento News and Review, but soon became friends. Before the pandemic, we were getting wieners on a regular basis. (It technically started as hot dogs for lunch, but soon wieners became synonymous with hanging out) Of the many things we bonded over, a mutual love for ska was high on the list, especially when Keith learned I was writing a book about ska. He insisted that I include him in the book with a chapter called “My Friend Keith Likes Ska.” That didn’t happen, but here we are a few months before In Defense of Ska releases and “My Friend Keith Likes Ska” is now a reality—as a podcast episode. Keith always hires a clown for his birthday partiesIn this episode, Keith talks about local Sacramento band Filibuster (Who Keith attempted to manage for a minute), his love for Fishbone (He was at that crazy Warfield show at the beginning of Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone), and a slew of other topics. One highlight this week comes by way of co-host Adam Davis, who revealed that his childhood church had a “No Skaw dancing” policy at their dances. Scandalous! Check out Keith’s latest special Not For Rehire on Amazon Prime and leave a review. Also be sure to pick up his book Punching Nazis and Other Good Ideas. Keith also has a podcast. Make sure you listen to the episode when he brings on In Defense of Ska author Aaron Carnes. Follow Keith on Twitter. His next book, What I Was Arrested For will be available for pre-order soon. I received a lot of response regarding the blog I read regarding Social D lead singer Mike Ness punching a dissenting fan. Mostly, people condoning the behavior because "it's always OK to punch Nazis." It's a dangerous thing to demonize someone so harshly for disagreeing with you...as actual Nazis did.

Keith has his first alcoholic beverage in years, Ben tells drunk stories, and Jonathan becomes the second guest to admit to trying to steal a statue. This one goes off the rails and back again. Enjoy! And don't forget to find Keith's albums on Stand Up! Records (www.standuprecords.com) or pre-order Keith's first collection of essays, "Punching Nazis and Other Good Ideas" from Amazon. This week, I talk about deradicalization and how to effectively fight extremist groups such as Neo-Nazis, white supremacists and even the Church of Scientology (spoiler: it’s not by punching them). Robert Örell is the Executive Director of Exit at Fryshuset. He has many years of experience working with individuals leaving violent extremist millieus and criminal... Punching Nazis: right or wrong? The lads discuss.
This week the TOGA Boys are unearthing an old relic of the past - the very first time the Boys ever sat down to do a pod. It is terrible. From their dorm room in 2011, you get a chance encounter with the Boys in their halcyon college days when things were simpler and way dumber. And Matt was really quiet. Richie's there. Hey, maybe, uh, maybe don't listen to this episode as your first. Punching Nazis is good. The one about Crossfit is really popular. We'll do a normal episode next week. Other topics: Occupy Wall Street, inventing Vaporwave, we were intolerable back in the day
In the constant struggle between memes, the punching of Nazis barely scratches the surface of the conflict. (CW: Physical assault.)

On episode 46 of PRP, Greg and Grendel get super deep, talking about the future of the Democratic Party, punching nazis, Seattle mayors, cultural appropriation during Halloween, and so much more. Fun for the whole family!!
This week the TOGA Boys are talking about the great American pastime: punching Nazis in their stupid faces. Punches are thrown, bands are called out, and there's a terrible cohost for about 5 minutes. To lighten the more somber tone, there are also cooking tips. Other topics: Go punch a Nazi today Special thanks to Kim Kelly for her twitter list which inspired this episode - https://twitter.com/GrimKim/status/897920531521056769 Please consider donating to food banks of cities affected by this year's hurricane season: http://www.houstonfoodbank.org/ https://foundationhalo.org/cause/barbuda-relief-effort/
Who thought we'd have a Nazi problem in 2017? Richard Warman did. Years before the current "Should I punch a Nazi" debate took off, he was taking neo-Nazis to court. As a human rights lawyer, Richard Warman went on mission to take down neo-Nazis using our legal system. He filed more complaints for online hate speech than any other Canadian -- and was hugely successful. But in the process, he got on the bad side of a lot of the media. The Right unites to fight to protect a statue of Robert E. Lee that he wouldn't have wanted. Antifascists use violence to resist those promoting violence. Sure punching Nazis seems like fun, it is not very creative. Absurdism and satire may be a better approach. Robert E. Lee on Civil War monuments. Trump and the White-Nationalist code. Sean Patrick Nielsen (WVTF/Radio IQ). David Duke, Ronald Reagan. Blood and soil. No Nazis. False equivalency. We are Alt-Right. Justice delivered. Unite us. They hate dishonest people. I hit them. Jews will not replace us. HATE. Hatred and violence has America. Killing Jews. Donald Trump is evil. Condemn Obama. Anarchists. Honest media. Antifa. Punching Nazis = fun not creative. Thanks to WTVF/Radio IQ, PBS Newshour, MSNBC, Brennan Gilmore (filmed car attack).
We discuss our favorite game to punch Nazis in, who would win in a fight between Indiana Jones and BJ from Castle Wolfenstein, and finish with a round-up of the latest GPUs.

Ohhhhhh Helllllo, and welcome to Episode 22 of Nobody Cares Go Harder! Matthew was a bit late posting this (we recorded it last Thursday so blame him), but that by no way means you shouldn't listen in as the boys discuss Duncan's new digs in Chicago and how life on the road is treating him, our thoughts on privilage, punching Nazis in the face, and basically just being a good god damn person. This was our first video/phone podcast since Duncan is out in the world living his dream so please disregard some of the bandwidth issues if you hear his voice stutter a bit. AND have no fear because we will be fixing that problem one way or another because we dont care and go harder. So listen in and enjoy the first episode of Nobody Cares Go Harder with Duncan on the road and Matthew in the new (not original) Mile High Studio. We appreciate all of your support and lending us your ears and minds for a few as we all continue to not care and go harder. #NOBODYCARESGOHARDER
"Turn the other cheek" has been used to perpetuate oppression for years, but when we look at what Jesus was trying to do, we find a radically empowering statement.
#93: Charlottesville and Punching Nazis CN: Violence, Foul Language, and Anger This episode is dedicated to those who oppose White Supremecy, Nazis, and Racism. The show opens as the duo talk about the most recent terrorist attack in VA, where a White Supremacist ran into a crowd of counter protesters. They will talk about their feelings, outrage, anger, and look at a few articles that they feel will help those who care to join in the resistance of White Supremacy. They also examine how the President responded and they pick apart the audio from the three press conferences Trump has given. EDIT NOTE: WE did not get to the next portion due to our episode length. Check the following out on our next show Episode 94: Amazon Welfare and Thermodynamics by clicking here: Later they try to calm down talking about how Amazon is getting corporate welfare and tax breaks. The show will end on their science segment talking about an article that discusses whether the 2nd law of thermodynamics holds the key to the origins of life. Captain America punched a lot of Nazis - does that mean we should too? We are pretty pro Nazi punching, but we want to explore the questions around it. On this episode, Paul and Matthew explore the ethical issues involve

Police spotted the Nazis in their rented U-Haul at the edge of the city around 11 am— two hours before anyone expected them to arrive. Fifteen members of the S.S. Action Group out of Westland—sitting three in the front and 12 in the back, riot shields and jackboots bouncing over every pothole. It was March 20, 1982, and a crowd of 2,000 anti-Nazi demonstrators were about to show the world what Ann Arbor thought of their Aryan visitors. Music by Diego and the Dissidents. Recently the internet exploded in debate over a video in which neo-Nazi Richard Spencer was punched while giving an interview. Even the New York Times published an article that asked whether this is something that should be morally permissible. I have come out against violence over words of any non-imminently threatening kind, and my guest Eli Bosnick has come out strong the other way. Since Eli is an awesome guy willing to discuss disagreements and try to find the truth, he's here to have a bit of a debate with me on what the correct course of action is re: Nazi punching.
