Book Vs. Movie: The Little MermaidThe Hans Christian Anderson Story Vs. the 1989 Disney ClassicThe Margos continue “Disney in December” with the all-time classic 1989 animated feature The Little Mermaid, which began as a fairy tale by Danish author Hans Christian Anderson in 1837. The film was responsible for bringing Disney studios back into animation leaders after decades of so-so films and losing top artists to rival companies. The original story is about a mermaid who lives in an underwater kingdom with her sisters, her father (a Mer-King), and her grandmother, who instructs her that when she is 15 years old, she can swim to the surface to see the world above. Her sisters (who are all older than her) can visit the land for only one day per year. The mermaid (who is never given a name) longs to visit more often and is obsessed with a statue of a human man on the ocean floor. When she finally rises, the Mermaid can see a man (a prince!) on shore, and she falls in love. As luck would have it, his ship wreaks, and she can save him from drowning. As she waits for him to wake up on the shore, a young woman from a nearby temple comes over. She is given credit for saving him, and the Little Mermaid becomes despondent. This is when we learn that mermaids can live up to 300 years undersea, and then they turn into sea foam--without a soul to go to heaven. The Little Mermaid visits a sea which tells her she will give her human legs if she trades with her beautiful voice. Mermaid makes this deal and goes to land. Unfortunately, her new legs feel like daggers as she walks, and the prince likes her well enough, but he loves the woman from the temple whom he thinks saved him from the shipwreck. The Little Mermaid is told by her sisters (who gave up their long hair to the sea witch to get the formula to bring her back underwater) if she visits the prince and his new bride on their honeymoon on a ship, she can stab him in the heart and she will become a mermaid again. Instead, she throws a knife into the water and becomes an “Air Fairy,” If she does good deeds for 300 years, she will go to heaven. The Disney version retells the tale with one of the best villains EVER--Ursula, voiced by the fabulous Pat Carroll and supposedly based partly on the late drag performer Divine. This mermaid is named Ariel, and Alan Menken's music and Howard Asman's lyrics are some of the most memorable in film history. (Try getting “Kiss the Girl” out of your head!) It made hundreds of millions at the box office, and little girls have been cosplaying Ariel for decades. She's not exactly a feminist icon--but the film is a delightful confection and the last of the handpainted Disney films. In this episode, we get into the history of the 1989 film and the children's fairy tale and discuss their differences. Then we choose which we each like better! This episode is sponsored by:Kensington Books and the Rebecca Zanetti novel You Can Hide. Set up against the backdrop of the Pacific Northwest, FBI agent Laurel Snow strives to navigate her complicated family life when her newly discovered sociopathic half-sister becomes the target of a dangerous killer. The Blacklist meets The Profiler meets Justified is how it is described as laurel believes her sister (Abigail) was behind the mysterious disappearance of their father. Abigail shows up to claim someone is out to kill her, and then dead bodies turn up in the icy Sauk River--her sister seems to be the only connection. This book has romance (in the form of Fish and Wildlife Captain Huck Rivers), action, family drama, suspense, and thrills. You can follow Rebecca Zanetti on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.In this ep the Margos discuss:Hans Christian Anderson's interesting lifeThe significant differences between the book and the movieDisney's post-Little Mermaid success and how it changed the perception of animationThe 1989 cast: Jodi Benson (Ariel,) Christopher Daniel Barnes (Prince Eric,) Pat Carroll (Ursula,) Kenneth Mars (King Triton,) Samuel E. Welcome back to The Procuretech Podcast!   We're continuing with our mini series where we ask influencers and industry experts for their thoughts and nuggets of advice on everything that's happening in the digital procurement world.   Content and Community for Procurement - Daniel Barnes from Gatekeeper Today we've got a returning guest who was on the first series of the podcast way back in 2020. He's a man who needs no introduction. But we're going to give him one anyway. It's procurement influencer Daniel Barnes, of World of Procurement and lately Gatekeeper.   A quick catch up on the last few years It was the very start of the COVID pandemic when we last spoke. So we kick off the podcast by asking Dan what he's been up to since then. A lot changed very quickly for Dan when the pandemic hit. He was working as a consultant in the defence space at the time, and COVID really impacted the pipeline of work in that space. From there, he pivoted to a FinTech firm where he worked for around 18 months. During that time he started looking into procurement tech and contract tech. In that role, he sourced and implemented a contract management product called Gatekeeper, then decided he wanted to join that company. Dan's got a legal background, including an undergraduate degree in commercial law. So the contract side of procurement comes naturally to him. He finds it fascinating, being able to hold his own against properly trained legal people like solicitors. He also felt like he could make a bigger impact at Gatekeeper - by showing off this kind of tech and educating people on the benefits of digital transformation. He's been in the role of Community Manager over at Gatekeeper since June. His job now involves shooting content on topics like contract and risk management, and also working with Gatekeeper to help better position the business. So that's lots of change in the last 6 months, let alone the last two years!   Dan's experience working in FinTech When he joined the FinTech, Dan was the very last person to join the team. Everyone else was more focused on the supplier management side of things They had a CLM but it was basically just a repository that allows you to store metadata, and it didn't really do anything else. It was really painful to work with. It was probably just an Excel worksheet by the CMS, and then a user interface was slapped on top of it. Going into a FinTech space in a scale up environment was terrifying. Everything happens so fast. Dan realised that with all the admin workload, there was barely any time to any work that adds value. And the work was boring, too. It was just the most mundane stuff - stuff that you could have a virtual assistant do for pennies, anywhere else in the world. He felt like a very well paid admin assistant a lot of the time. And that's bizarre, especially for a tech business.   Implementing Gatekeeper Thankfully, the company Dan was working for did get it. He managed to secure some investment to go out and find a solution that could change things. They looked at maybe 10 different suppliers, in CLM, and the wider procurement space. Then eventually chose gatekeeper as the best solution. It automated everything that might usually fall to a junior admin assistant – literally every single part of what that job spec would have looked like. Dan can remember the early days when he could spend all day working in an Excel spreadsheet. These days, Excel gives Dan anxiety. Spending all day in a spreadsheet isn't doing procurement. It's busy work. People might shut down at any mention of AI, but it really moves things along when it comes to processes and workflows. Whether it's extracting data, creating records or reaching out to people, it reduces the time spent on jobs that don't add value. This is what Dan finds so empowering about technology. There are also really exciting social and...

https://www.sonicstadium.org/2022/07/mecha-knuckles-sigma-and-other-idw-sonic-panel-reveals-from-sdcc-2022/ "It's still San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, and while the guy in the Sonic mascot suit couldn't make it to the IDW Sonic panel, our own Shigs could, and he brought back a few tidbits from upcoming issues and the series Q&A. Representing IDW were Daniel Barnes (writer), Adam Bryce Thomas (artist), Michael Cisneros (licensing), Gigi Dutreix (artist/writer), and David Mariotte (editor/writer). The crew thanked fans for helping them make it to the landmark Issue 50, and teased that the next several issues will deal with the fallout from the events of 50, starting with the cast escaping Eggman's city. Introducing the upcoming Scrapnik Island series, the panel offered concept art for the battered bots Mecha Knuckles and Sigma. The slightly diminutive Mecha Knuckles acts as “Guardian” of the island (like his fuzzy counterpart). He wields a mace, Adventure 1 and 2's shovel claw, and Knuckles' three-star hat from the anime OVA. Sigma was introduced as a green E-Series robot in the style of Gamma and his “brothers.” Worse for wear with an Eggbot arm and flat caster for his right foot, he still towers at his full height over both Sonic and Dr. Eggman. The panelists also gave a reminder that the Tails 30th Anniversary special is in the works, and includes some villains from Tails' classic game history (previously revealed to include Wendy Witchcart from Tails Sky Patrol). They showed off some of the previously shared cover art for this special, the upcoming 2022 annual, and issues 51 and 52: The Q&A focused on a handful of topics, and unsurprisingly, the series' original characters were on everyone's mind. Whisper will be returning in the next series arc, and they're continuing to discuss story plans for her and Tangle next year. Surge and Kit, the fakers we found in Imposter Syndrome and Issue 50, were originally planned for early in the series, but SEGA preferred not to introduce that many new characters that quickly, which ultimately gave Dr. Starline more time to develop as a character. Instead, the panel noted that the Metal Virus Arc gave them an opportunity to see exactly how far they could push the core Sonic cast emotionally, something that really endeared Cream with Barnes. For those curious about the effort needed to put together an IDW issues (and why we get more “we have notes” situations than other previous Sonic comics), the panel explained that all issues have to go through Sonic Team, meaning that they also have to be translated into Japanese as well. It's roughly a three month process for each issue. Prior to Q&A, Cisneros also noted that the direction of the comic is intended to be welcoming to new fans “at any time without 30 years of canon to go through.” Finally, outside of the panel, the Comic art team worked on putting together a sweet Sonic mural featuring members of the game and comic cast: While this panel didn't quite give us a vision of the comic's future after the big 50 milestone, it's exciting to see more ways for the games' extended cast to work back into stories in unique ways. The 2022 annual is expected to launch next month, with Scrapnik Island to follow in October." Christian and Sean are joined by Daniel Barnes (@Danny8bit) to talk about Ian Flyn's run on Archie's Sonic the Hedgehog comic (Issues #160-290). Managing contracts can be a massive time suck but also an often under-utilised way of mining for gold when it comes to discovering savings opportunities. In this podcast, I speak to Daniel Barnes of Ikaros Consultancy. Daniel is a law graduate and also recently launched his own podcast, World of Procurement. We talk about how the human touch, combined with automation of repetitive tasks, is the best solution when considering how to best manage your supplier contracts. Contract Management – Daniel Barnes from Ikaros Consultancy 2:42 Daniel explains how he landed into the contract management space in the procurement world. 6:30 How Daniel took his experience working on government defence contracts and was able to take these key learnings into the private sector and civilian industries. 7:38 Are there significant differences in approach when considering smaller businesses versus larger corporates? 9:45 How the technology and resources could be different depending on the size of the business and the amount of contracts processed in any given organisation. 11:28 I ask Daniel whether it's better to approach contract management by size of spend basis first and foremost, or by category. The answer he gave was not what I was expecting. 13:20 A funny story of the building with no windows which nonetheless had £100k of invoices for replacement of windows. 16:00 We talk technology, and the advantages and limitations of using tech to be able to make contract management easier. 20:52 Why a digital contract management solution will only work if your organisation is ready to embrace it and your existing systems and processes can support it. 22:40 How to build a business case for a contract management solution. Is it primarily cost avoidance? And if so, how to convince a CFO to part with their budget to implement a solution to successfully manage it? 25:52 Does operational and tactical procurement have a future? Daniel has some pretty strong views on how these roles will likely be eliminated over the coming years.
