About 2 weeks ago, Meta, the company that owns Facebook and Instagram, launched a new app called THREADS, and the internet basically had a field day.   According to Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, there were 10 million sign ups in 7 hours, and by day 5, there were 100 MILLION users on the app, which is basically unheard of for a new platform.   I do think a big reason for that is because: a) The sign up process was SEAMLESS. You basically just sign in via your Instagram account and it just takes care of the rest for you. Honestly, it blew my mind. It was the simplest sign up process I have ever experienced. b) They have done something that hasn't been done before, which is that they defaulted to automatically connecting you to your Instagram's followers and following. This is awesome because if you have an Instagram account, you don't have to start at ground zero.   But putting all this aside, I know you might have questions.   Questions like, "Is this going to be another Clubhouse, or Lemon8, where there is a lot of hype around it in the beginning, but it just doesn't gain the traction it needs in order to be a major player in the online space?"   Or maybe you've been asking yourself, "Do I really need another app to manage? Is this a great opportunity, or is it a distraction?"   "And if it IS an opportunity, how do I even use it? What do I post? And how much time do I really need to spend on it?"   That being said, I want to do my best and answer these questions for you. But a little disclaimer here–I am NOT an expert at Threads, nor do I claim to be. Threads is all the buzz lately! 100 million new users join in just the first week, which is crazy!   You have to ask yourself (because who really needs yet another social media platform):   Is it worth your time?  Is it just another time suck?  How can you leverage it for your business?    The jury is still out, but for now, I'd say give it a try and just have fun experimenting.    Will Threads replace Twitter?    Or will it go the way of Clubhouse? Remember during the pandemic lockdown, when Clubhouse was everyone's favorite shiny new toy? We were all isolated and stuck at home, so what else was there to do? But nowadays, is anyone even still using it? Not me.   I'm still experimenting and playing around with Threads to decide for myself how it might fit into an overall marketing strategy. What I've sensed so far is that it's not political or journalistic (like Twitter). It's actually more like the early days of Facebook when you'd post a random status.    Why Join Threads Now?   If you're thinking about joining the Threads app and want to grow a big following, it's best to jump on now before it gets overcrowded. So much happened with Twitter. It broke, or maybe they broke it. Then they broke it more, possibly trying to fix it. It's still broken and the vibes are off. Meta launched its new Threads app into the social hole abdicated by Twitter, and 30 million people said "ok" even though Meta is a demonstrably terrible brand that chooses profit over people over and over and over again. We'll probably check it out.  The ever increasing availability of digital surveillance tools is threatening privacy in France (the police want to turn on your phone's camera), Virginia (adults need to register with a government website to view porn), and Sacramento (the Sheriff illegally shares license plate data with police in states that have criminalized abortion).
